What do Londoners think of the Met.
Transcript
00:00Sir Sadiq Khan's policing deputy faced questions on Wednesday over the continually low levels
00:08of trust and confidence Londoners have in the Metropolitan Police. The criticism comes
00:14two years after Baroness Casey concluded in a scathing review that the Met was institutionally
00:21racist, sexist and homophobic. But according to public attitude surveys conducted by the
00:28Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime, trust and confidence in the Met remained far lower
00:33when Sadiq Khan took office as Mayor in 2016. Confidence in particular is at an all-time
00:39low with only 46% of Londoners believing the police are doing a good job in their local
00:45area. This compares with an all-time high of 69% in 2016. At a meeting of the London
00:54Assembly's Police and Crime Committee, the committee's Tory Chair, Susan Hoare, said
00:59of Londoners' confidence in the Met Police that she thinks we can all agree it needs
01:04to be better than it is now. But what do Londoners actually think of the Met Police and do we
01:11see enough of them on our streets?
01:13Well, I think seeing them around is not the same as whether they're effective or not.
01:18And I think I feel okay about them. I don't feel any worse about them. I think there are
01:23weaknesses, but I don't think there are any. It's got no worse to me.
01:26I've got to say, I was part of the system, if you like, for over 30 years. I used to
01:32be in the Britain service. So, you know, I think people have. I don't trust them as much
01:39as I once did, but fundamentally, I'm supportive of them.
01:43Well, of course, there used to be policemen walking around. But I don't think that necessarily
01:50is good policing. You know, it's much more complicated than seeing policemen standing
01:55about or walking about. It really is.
01:57I mean, when we were young, buggers were walking up and down, walking up and down the street,
02:02you know.
02:03They knew your name.
02:04Knew your name. Not now. All you see is them flashing by in cars, and that's it.
02:09Is that something that you'd like to see again? Like, go back to that time? Would that make
02:12you...
02:13Oh, flipping hell, yeah. It's only a bit old-fashioned, going back to the time. But in some ways,
02:17in some aspects, it was better and that were better.
02:20Yeah, I think it's quite a difficult question because I think it's very hard to determine
02:25what's done. It's usually done on a case-by-case basis. And I think everybody would just hope
02:30that their case is, you know, handled with care and that's what the police aim to do.
02:35So I think it's just very hard to pinpoint what's been done unless you look at the full
02:40details of the case and then just hope and trust that everybody can do the best thing
02:44they can to reach a solution to said problem.
02:48If Bobbies knew your name and they knew where you lived, you don't do anything wrong because
02:52they'd be roamed at your house.
