00:15As the force was founded by the Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel, the officers got their nickname
00:21as Bobbies or Peelers at the time, which is still used today. Peel organised the police
00:27force along civilian rather than military lines to try and reassure the public that
00:32he wasn't introducing an armed dictatorship. The officers therefore had blue uniforms rather
00:39than wearing the same colour as the army who wore red during those days. Met Police officers
00:45were armed only with truncheons and rattles, they wore top hats and with the exception
