Where will Rafael Devers play to start the season? 3B? DH? Is he open to the idea of DH? What's the plan? #MLB
Transcript
00:00To grace us with his presence
00:03You he was participant in the FIM game yesterday shine
00:08And looks like he will be in the lineup. Yeah, finally this weekend. So we know there's a plan so
00:15I don't know if is this gonna be a thing?
00:18I'll see if they are they gonna have to placate the guy all season long when it comes to this Curtis
00:23I think so. This is an ugly spot
00:27I think you know the biggest key obviously and this goes without saying is winning early if the team gets off to a hot start
00:32He'll look really silly if he's bitching about it. I
00:36Just I I don't really know what his out is. He's got a guaranteed deal worth 350 million plus dollars
00:44He's gonna be asked just to hit the fan base supports the decision
00:47Do you think fans are gonna get behind Devers in this fight against Cora? No, I don't it doesn't sound like he's going quietly though
00:54He's continuing, you know, I appreciate the fact that he said I'll do whatever the Red Sox want me to do
01:00But he wants to make it clear
01:02that he is
01:04Continuing to fight for that job. So I and I don't know if that's a pride thing and he
01:12Just I mean does he not look and see
01:16What you get from Alex Bregman like everybody else does the only issue
01:20I think it comes out is like there's only two ways if they
01:25Decide to select let's say they say all right Devers. We're gonna put here
01:29We're gonna placate Devers and we're gonna make him feel good
01:32We're gonna start you a third base and then if things go wrong, we're gonna move into Bregman
01:36But that's you don't really want to do that because that becomes an issue
01:39The only other the other issue I see moving forward is if Devers says, all right
01:43I'll go to DH reluctantly and then and then he's bitching about and then he's but he's bitching about it
01:49And then after the season he goes, all right, I want to trade. Okay. Well, I mean, I don't care about the end of the season
01:54I I think that Devers is going to be in a losing battle. The fan base is wildly supportive of Cora
02:00They're overwhelmingly appreciative of the Bregman acquisition and they know that their best team is Bregman at third
02:07so whatever Devers says will come across as really
02:11sour grapes
02:12so I don't I don't worry about it being an issue in terms of the clubhouse either because
02:17Bregman has been so good at deflecting, you know, he's like Devers is a great player. I'm happy to be here
02:22I think that there really isn't much there's no leverage. The only leverage Devers has is to not show up
02:29What she'll he'll show up, but you don't see this, but isn't that what he's been doing? I
02:34Mean, he's physically there, but he hasn't played yet. And the leverage is is that he could say listen, I want to be traded
02:41Right, so
02:43This could be an issue down the road because remember Bregman's only on a three-year deal
02:48So there's a chance that whether it's at the end of this year or next year if he's being paid
02:5430 million dollars, right? I get it. I get it do what they want you to do. It's not that difficult, right?
03:02But you're right. They're not asking him to do two things. They're to have to do half his job, right?
03:08it's
03:11For the first time in a long time I have a legitimate chance
03:16especially when when it comes to the Yankees and injuries a
03:21legitimate chance to win the division right and
03:25the this guy if he's gonna be
03:30Whining all season is is gonna derail that well
03:33I don't think he derails that because I think that excuse me. I think that he'll go up really really
03:40Ironman today Wiggs persevere
03:44He'll go while everybody else is mailing days in left and right I'm being accused of being a soft manager
03:50Trying to do my part as people you got everybody riled up every everybody's jumping on board with you this morning on the text line
03:58I just call like I see it right saying I don't run a tight ship over here. Yeah, I mean, I don't
04:04Just call like I see it, you know, I mean which we're obviously what we're trying our best to
04:09To create a great show here and be number one and it's about having everybody here and and not taking days off
04:15But you know what? We're not like Belichick the no days off. We go with the other model take days off
04:20Yeah, so he's nine days off. So right so the way I would look at it like this
04:24The I don't think Devers allows it to bother him when he's at the plate
04:28And I don't think it becomes an issue in the in the clubhouse. I think it becomes an issue
04:33Down the road whether it's next offseason where he might say I want a tree, okay
04:39But nobody is going to trade for him to play third base
04:44Like some teams would play. No, no, they would not he'd say hey we could
04:48He's led the league in errors the last
04:51Three four years like I in the entire league, right?
04:55But I bet there are teams that could say not only are we getting a guy that might have some errors at third base
05:00But we're getting an unbelievable back at 30 million a year. Why wouldn't we trade for this guy?
05:05Who's only gonna be what 28 years old? I?
05:09Highly doubt that Devers this offseason if he doesn't have a great year and he's still bitching has much value to other teams with that
05:16Contract. Yeah, but what if he has a great year at the plate?
05:18We all believe that everybody wins then the silver socks are probably in the playoffs and everybody's happy
05:23But what if he still wants to play third base?
05:26Then you're in a better position then you could deal him if you wanted to that's my point
05:29My point that's a good. That's a great problem to have but my point is is that you're gonna you could potentially lose a
05:37You know, obviously a great bat that you're gonna have to you know, you'll get some assets for it
05:41Yeah, no, but that's great
05:43That means that the Devers and Brinkman had a great year and then they're gonna have good problems to solve in the offseason. I
05:51Just I mean he was bitching last year because he wanted them to add players, right
05:58They add players just on a third base
06:02Complaining but Greg this is why Cora was so dead set on Bregman in the first place
06:07This clubhouse needed people that were focused on winning not their own personal needs
06:13That's why Bregman was so important for Cora this offseason
06:17it's why he didn't go out of his way to warn Devers about it because the desired result of Bregman's arrival is being seen in the
06:23Poutiness of Tristan Cassis and Raphael Devers unless Devers after this season from DH and goes, you know
06:30What is bad as I thought it is?
06:33That it's not gonna be a big deal. But if he still wants to play third base
06:37What and Curtis probably is right that it'll be a good problem to have but you're probably even got you know
06:44You're gonna have to move on from Devers or you're gonna have to say
06:47All right
06:47How long is Bregman gonna be around if it's only a three-year deal?
06:51Do we have a prospect that we have in the pipeline or if we do trade Devers? We're able to get another prospect. Yeah
06:59And I would also say there's never been a DH alone in Boston
07:02That's ever had a lot of notoriety or landed in the Hall of Fame. So it's a position that's really hard to succeed at
07:07Oh wait, oh wait a minute. I think there's somebody here that has a bridge named after him
07:11Right, you can make a pretty good living you would think that would be the case
07:14But for clearly for whatever funky reason Devers in his mind does feels like if you put me to DH
07:21I
07:22I'm I'm not as part of the team as I'd like to be I want to be a third baseman
07:27For I would think that it's like dude less work
07:30Just to hit the ball. You don't have to worry about fielding. Yeah, I would think most guys would be on board. All right
