00:00Morning. Hello, Brett.
00:02Morning, Greg. Morning, crew. How are you?
00:04What's going on?
00:06Hey, so I saw my buddy Jason Aldean
00:08is coming to Fenway Park
00:10this summer.
00:12Do you think he's trolling
00:14Tom Warner with the name of his
00:16concert, the
00:18tour? I don't know the
00:20name of the Jason Aldean tour.
00:22Oh, it is full
00:24throttle.
00:26Really? Maybe Bregman can
00:28open for him.
00:30Well, I'm just thinking Tom Warner on stage
00:32with Aldean at Fenway.
00:34I think the reception of that
00:36shall be awesome.
00:38When he doesn't sign Bregman and the team gets
00:40off to a terrible start.
00:42We were talking about Bregman
00:44earlier.
00:46I heard, yeah. I'm a little behind.
00:48Seems like
00:50that train has left the station
00:52for the Red Sox.
00:54Yeah, they're just not going to extend themselves.
00:56They're going to go high AAV
00:58with a shorter term.
01:00He wants long term
01:02and long AAV.
01:04His agent is Boris and the Red
01:06Sox aren't going to extend themselves.
01:08It's frustrating.
01:12It makes you think that they believe
01:14in the younger
01:16players, but there's
01:18so much risk in those younger
01:20players. They're just going to get, the perception
01:22Greg, is they're just going
01:24to get crushed by the fans
01:26and deservably so for not spending
01:28any money. You know what I mean? So the younger players
01:30can be good and they can be winners and they can
01:32be
01:34good players and help you win, but
01:36the ownership not spending,
01:38the ownership is getting outspent
01:40right now by the Oakland Athletics.
01:46I mean, the
01:48Oakland Athletics are outspending
01:50the Boston Red Sox in the offseason.
01:52How many times can you say that?
01:54I have a question. You know, we both follow
01:56this, but you're a diehard team head.
01:58How do they spin this?
02:00Like, how do you go
02:02say we're legitimately
02:04offering $700 million
02:06to Soto
02:08and then sit out the rest of free agency
02:10outside of Walker Bueller?
02:12Yeah, it'll come in a form
02:14of extension for Garrett Crochet.
02:16That's step one. So when
02:18Garrett Crochet gets his extension,
02:20that'll be, well, we had to
02:22extend ourselves with prospects, which we
02:24had to get uncomfortable, and now
02:26we're going to pay the pitcher.
02:28But I've continued to tell
02:30you guys that's kind of the
02:32strike zone for the Red Sox with these young
02:34guys, is you're going to try to extend them and spend
02:36that way. But there is no
02:38Curtis, they've signed two contracts
02:40since 2000, 2020
02:42that have been longer than two years.
02:44Dude.
02:46They just
02:48don't spend. And when I say that
02:50to Sam Kennedy, he looks at me like I told
02:52him he was three foot six. Like, he
02:54acts like I'm insane when I
02:56say they have had a massive shift in how
02:58they build the roster.
03:00Right. You know,
03:02I feel
03:04bad for Sam because Sam is having
03:06to champion John Henry's
03:08ideals, right?
03:10He's having to
03:12be the mouthpiece for the ownership.
03:14But you also see over
03:16the last week or so, you've
03:18also seen two huge franchises
03:20in Major League Baseball come out about
03:22the economics
03:24of baseball. That's the Chicago
03:26Cubs owner, and that was
03:28the New York Yankees. They've
03:30both recently just said, well, we
03:32can't play in that same sandbox
03:34as the Los Angeles Dodgers in
03:36terms of economic spending.
03:38It's
03:40BS. Sorry, I interrupted you.
03:42You're going to say it's BS.
03:44Yeah, it is.
03:46So the Dodgers are on an island
03:48and you're
03:50telling me that the New York Yankees are
03:52complaining about economic hardship
03:54and the Chicago Cubs.
03:56And I spoke to
03:58Greg about this. The Chicago Cubs
04:00ownership is very similar to
04:02John Henry in terms of they've
04:04bought up all of the real estate around
04:06their ballpark. They've done a good job fixing up
04:08Wrigley. Red Sox have done a good job fixing
04:10up Fenway, but they've purchased the
04:12real estate all around
04:14the ballpark. So when you're talking
04:16about getting back to even
04:18in terms of
04:20economics on the field
04:22from your baseball team,
04:24it sounds hollow
04:26to me because of all the money that you make
04:28in marketing and in
04:30real estate around your ballpark.
04:32So it's like we know
04:34that that's not true. And Sam, Curtis,
04:36did Sam tell you that too?
04:38They were breakeven.
04:40He said when we were at spring training
04:42last year, they were trying to
04:44get to breakeven.
04:46That's exactly what the Chicago Cubs
04:48said.
04:50And the
04:52fans just don't want to hear it. Fans
04:54don't want to hear that. And when you've
04:56missed out, Courtney hit it earlier.
04:58Courtney said it perfectly.
05:00You talk yourself into this player
05:02they don't get, and then you talk yourself into the next player
05:04to get that guy.
05:06How far
05:08down the list do we have to go for fans
05:10to get excited? And at some point, it's just
05:12it's not worth it. So you're going to
05:14invest all your money in the young guys and just pray
05:16that they're good. Brett, don't you think that they'll
05:18shove down our throats is that
05:20if they don't get breakeven, they'll
05:22shove down our throats, that their rotation,
05:24pitching staff is the
05:26deepest that it's been, and that's been their biggest
05:28issue. And the hitting they've been
05:30in, and I've always said this, they've been top
05:32in most major categories, so
05:34hitting's not the biggest issue that they have.
05:36Don't you think that's the approach that they're going to
05:38shove down our throat, is how they have completely
05:40changed the pitching staff?
05:42Yeah, I think you're
05:44right. I think you're right, Wiggy.
05:46They're going to have to, right? They're going to have
05:48to pivot somehow. But if you
05:50go back and if you play the Sam Kennedy
05:52audio, where he's
05:54talking about, doesn't matter about
05:56going over the CBT, we
05:58want to be, we don't want to win a wild card,
06:00we want to win the division.
06:02How do you sell your fans on that
06:04when you haven't made the
06:06improvements to be
06:08in that spot?
06:10Right? So you can say, yeah, sure, you
06:12made that trade, you signed Walker Bueller,
06:14you haven't addressed your bullpen,
06:16so as of right now, you
06:18haven't addressed your bullpen, and you
06:20haven't gotten the right-handed balance in your
06:22lineup. So the fans are smart.
06:24You haven't spent
06:26any money, and Sam literally
06:28said they want to win 95 games and win
06:30the division. But
06:32it's another offseason
06:34of them saying things that
06:36just aren't adding up.
06:38You know what I mean? So is there a divide between
06:40Greslow and Sam Kennedy and Al
06:42Tor? I don't know. But why would Sam
06:44why would Sam at the beginning of the offseason
06:46say that if
06:48you're just not going to do it?
06:50Now you're going to have to go out and do
06:52you're going to have to go out as of right now
06:54if you're going to spend money.
06:56You can. I don't think you're going to.
06:58But now you're going to have to make a trade.
07:00So now you're going to have to give up more assets
07:02to give up a trade to get that
07:04right-handed bat, and you can sign a back-end
07:06bullpen, I guess, if you want. But those
07:08guys, there's been a run on those guys
07:10for the last week. All the bullpen
07:12arms are starting to sign.
07:14Full throttle. We're going full throttle
07:162026.
07:18The only full throttle is going to be
07:20Jason Aldean at Fenway Park
07:22coming in May.
07:24Thank you, Brett. Thank you. I don't know.
07:26Maybe they got something up their
07:28sleeve. Right before
07:30spring training begins.
07:32Maybe. February 14th.
07:34When did Blake Snell
07:36sign? Wasn't it like late into
07:38spring training? So maybe that's something
07:40like you said, they pull a rabbit out the hat
07:42with Bregman.
07:44Not going to happen. Who the hell knows?
07:46Quiggy, you are
07:48you're always loyal.
07:50That's what they're going to sell to us
07:52They better give you a golf
07:54cart this year.
07:56It's not about what they're going to
07:58sell us, it's about what we buy.
08:00And if you're still buying what they're selling, you're a moron.
08:02No, it's Brett said, alright,
08:04the bullpen are going to sell us
08:06Liam Hendricks coming back.
08:08Who's buying that? They're going to sell us
08:10our oldest chapman. Right, but who's buying that?
08:12I don't know. They'll be Red Sox
08:14fans. I guarantee you they'll be Red Sox
08:16fans that buy it.
08:18What percentage of the Red Sox fan base do you think?
08:20I'd probably say maybe like
08:2238%.
08:24We'll buy that.
08:26Because if you look at their
08:28statistically where they finished last year
08:30in hitting, they were top 10.
08:32So they'll sell
08:34our biggest issue last year
08:36was our pitching and we addressed those issues.
08:38If their hitting wasn't an issue,
08:40why were they willing to invest $700 million
08:42on a hitter? Because they said
08:44that he was the Ted Williams
08:46of his era. Right, but it's just
08:48Well, it's Ted Williams. That's a pretty big
08:50bonus offer. No, no. It's like when it's the Tom
08:52Brady, the Michael Jordan. No Brady talk.
08:54When it's that guy you invest
08:56or you make a hard push for that guy.
08:58But whether you're the Red Sox or the
09:00Yankees or
09:02the White Sox,
09:04to whine
09:06about what the Dodgers are doing
09:08does you no good.
09:10You're still going to have to keep competing
09:12with them. You would think. But he is on
09:14John Henry Heads and Economic Reform
09:16Major League Baseball on behalf of the Commissioner
09:18to get spending down. Well, the
09:20Dodgers didn't get the memo. Right.
09:22So if you believe
09:24that the Red Sox actually invested
09:26$700 million potentially in
09:28Soto, then I don't know what to tell you.
09:30I just, I hope
09:32you don't lose a tooth. But they do
09:34Brett is right where they do own
09:36these franchises
09:38own all the ventures
09:40around the ballpark. So
09:42they have the opportunity to make money.
09:44Food and Bev
09:46and probably
09:48not in dry January.
