00:00If someone had asked me to bet on this a couple of weeks ago, I would have just lost a bet.
00:04If you had told me that we would get to the crossover on the day that Jonathan Kaminga
00:08was returning to action and his name wouldn't even come up, I'd have bet a lot of money
00:12that that wasn't about to happen.
00:14We've been talking all about this for weeks, and here we are.
00:19Not a peep.
00:20Nobody wants to say anything about it?
00:23What's to say?
00:24We've already said everything, and Steve Curry yesterday talked about how he's going to be
00:28eased in.
00:29We talked to Steve about that very thing, and so, I don't know, it feels like everything
00:33about Jonathan Kaminga has been said.
00:36What else can we say other than everything we've said?
00:40We hope it works.
00:41I think it will work.
00:43I think he's going to come in and be good, and then eventually, if he's great, well,
00:47they can go deep.
00:48So, yeah, we can speculate further, but tonight's going to be really exciting, and the first
00:54time when you see him pull off the sweats and he goes down to the scorer's table and
00:59he checks in and the crowd's going to give him a nice welcome back ovation, and then
01:02we're all going to see.
01:04How you doing, J.K.?
01:05Okay.
01:06How you feeling?
01:07I got something to at least ask about it, and 888-957-9570 is the number.
01:12What a perfect day to do it.
01:13So, Jonathan Kaminga's going to turn to action tonight, and Mac Jones is on the 49ers.
01:17Mac Jones has a contract with the 49ers, but Brock Purdy does not.
01:22Before you call and text, I know that Brock Purdy has a contract.
01:26I get it, but you all understand what I'm talking about.
01:28Brock's not going to show up right now with the current state of affairs that's on a piece
01:32of paper.
01:33Mac Jones will.
01:34Football is funny, isn't it?
01:35I mean, it almost feels like someone's playing with us.
01:38Mac Jones is finally a 49er.
01:40All right, so let's talk about it, because there are two young names in Bay Area sports
01:47right now that sometime between now and fall need contract extensions.
01:53One of them is named Brock Purdy.
01:55One of them is named Jonathan Kaminga.
01:57Who are you more comfortable paying big money to to make a part of your future, Brock Purdy
02:03or Jonathan Kaminga?
02:05Let's go.
02:06888-957-9570.
02:07Fire away.
02:08Yeah.
02:09What do you say?
02:10It's Brock Purdy, and to me, it's not even that much of a difficult thing, because he
02:14is the quarterback, and you need to have a quarterback more than you need to have a number
02:20two or number three option.
02:21Now, can J.K. eventually be your number one?
02:24Sure, it's possible, but he won't be next year, and he won't be the year after.
02:28You've got Steph and Jimmy and Draymond for two more years, so the J.K. extension would
02:34be nice.
02:35It'd be great to have him around, but if it's going to be $35 million a year and you can't
02:39afford it, well, you're going to have to let J.K. go.
02:42If another team offers him big money and you can't afford it, he's not your one, and he
02:47won't be your one until 2028.
02:52Even then, if Steph decides he wants to retire at that point...
02:55And Ramona said yesterday there will be a market for Jonathan Kamingo.
02:58Right.
02:59There will be a market.
03:00Of course there'll be a market.
03:01A market.
03:02Like, what's the market?
03:03If a team offers him four years and $44 million, well, yeah, you're going to match that.
03:10There's going to be a market.
03:11I wonder what the market is and how high that market is.
03:15What if they offer him four years and $160 million?
03:17Well, then it's, thank you, Jonathan.
03:19Good job.
03:20Is it?
03:21They're not paying him $40 million a year.
03:22I don't believe that they will pay him $40 million a year.
03:25I don't think anyone will.
03:26They could have done that last summer.
03:27I don't think anyone will.
03:28But this may surprise some people.
03:32I totally disagree with you.
03:34It's shocking, actually, because you've been the Brock guy and I've been the J.K. guy.
03:38I'm not not a Brock guy.
03:40And I'm not not a J.K. guy.
03:41I'm also not not a J.K. guy, despite what many of you think.
03:45I'm also not not not a Brock guy.
03:48I don't even know.
03:49No, I'm confused.
03:50I'm confused.
03:51But I just think quarterback is like it's different.
03:55Like exactly my point, though.
03:57But you like your quarterback.
03:58You've got to keep him.
03:59Yeah.
04:00That's not that.
04:01Like, first of all, my answer would be I like them both.
04:05But the question is, who are you more comfortable paying?
04:10Who are you more comfortable signing to an extension to be a big part of your future?
04:16My answer is absolutely Jonathan Kaminga, because so many fewer things could go wrong.
04:22So many fewer things could go wrong.
04:24Think of all the things that I could say about a Kaminga extension that I can't say about
04:28a Purdy extension.
04:29A Kaminga extension is not even going to cost you 40 a year.
04:33Kaminga is not going to be asked to be the most important player on your team.
04:37Kaminga is not playing in a hard cop league where if he decides to take X, it's going
04:46to mess with everything else that you might be able to do on your team because Kaminga
04:51plays for an ownership group that has shown in the past, well, we'll absolutely we'll
04:57go over the tacks and over the threshold and over the all the different nicknames we've
05:01got for all of these things, the aprons and all of these things that are you can find
05:05in a house or on an NBA salary cap.
05:08All of them.
05:09None of those things are true in football.
05:12So in other words, I can sign Jonathan Kaminga to an extension.
05:17And if it doesn't go great, my team doesn't fall apart.
05:22If the 49ers are wrong, and if I'm wrong, and if you're wrong, you know, I'm a huge
05:28Brock Purdy fan, but we're not batting a thousand because we're human beings.
05:33And if we're wrong, then the next era of 49er football is going to suck out loud.
05:40It's that important.
05:41It depends on how, what the extension is.
05:44And that's why I do think that they're going to do a shorter term and like not quite the
05:49Daniel Jones, like the Giants gave Daniel Jones four years and 160 and it was 40 years
05:55average annual, but it was front loaded.
05:57So that after two years, if Daniel Jones wasn't it and spoiler alert, he wasn't, they were
06:03able to get out of it and, you know, pivot to not much better, but at least they were
06:07able to get out of that deal.
06:08And I do think the Niners will look at the Brock Purdy extension similarly and make it
06:13so that it's front loaded.
06:15And if you get into a year or two years of Brock Purdy and you know, this year looks
06:20like it's not a rebuild, but it's definitely a reload and a refresh of the roster.
06:26So if they come out and they have another kind of blah year, then, okay, Brock, you
06:31got one more year to, to show us that you really can carry a team.
06:35If not at that point, you can pivot.
06:37How so?
06:39If you structure the contract the way that I do believe.
06:41A year from now you should be able to pivot?
06:44Two years, Mark, much like they did, the Giants did with Daniel Jones.
06:48It was two years.
06:49Yeah, I don't think Brock signs that.
06:50I don't think Brock signs that.
06:51Well, he's going to sign a four year deal, I think.
06:53And so after two years, and if most of the guaranteed money is paid upfront, then you
06:59absolutely can pivot.
07:00But a four year extension would then also, you're talking about a four year extension
07:04or a four year deal?
07:05Probably a four year deal.
07:07So a three year extension.
07:08A three year extension on this year?
07:10Right.
07:11Yeah.
07:12Like, look, I don't know how y'all think about 49er football.
07:15Did over the last week, did this like take the wind out of your sails to such a degree
07:21that you've decided that there's no way that this year can be a good year?
07:25I'm not there.
07:26So if you tell me that you signed a Brock Purdy extension and you're wrong, and 49er
07:32football is like third place, even for the next two seasons, I'm devastated.
07:37That's terrible.
07:39This is like, absolutely terrible.
07:42Because now we're having conversations about a regime change.
07:45And oh, good God, no, no, no, no, no, no, we don't want that.
07:53Every single one of you out there, well, they need to fire Shanahan, dude, take a lap.
08:01Regime changes suck.
08:02It means you're starting everything over and you really don't know what's coming around
08:07the bend.
08:08So be frustrated with Shanahan all you want.
08:11The Niners do not need a regime change, for crying out loud.
08:16Guy's been here for seven years or whatever it is, they've been dancing in the NFC title
08:20game every other year while he's been here.
08:24You do not want a regime change.
08:28And if this contract and what they're trying to do right now with, as you call it, a reboot
08:33or refresh, if it doesn't go well, we're staring down the barrel of a really bad stretch of
08:4049er football.
08:41I have no idea how that would go.
08:43I don't worry about that with the Golden State Warriors right now.
08:47Certainly not right now.
08:48Two and a half years from now, we can have a brand new conversation.
08:52I don't know if any Hall of Fame level players are going to be on the team two and a half
08:57years from now.
08:59But to me, the Jonathan Kaminga extension, I'm way more comfortable with that because
09:04quite frankly, there's way less at stake.
09:08It depends on what you pay him.
09:09And you know, if you're talking about four years and 160 million, 40 million per, even
09:15if you can afford that under the cap, which you can't, and you'd be up in the second apron,
09:19that's fine.
09:20You're allowed to do that.
09:21But even if you did that and you're going to pay him 40 million a year and that's going
09:25to hamstring your ability to do anything else.
09:28So Kavanaugh be gone, GP two's gone and you're probably not going to, that's a number that
09:33you threw out.
09:34I thought, no, I was talking about, I was throwing out a hypothetical of what another
09:38team could offer that would make the Warriors blink.
09:40I don't think he's getting that.
09:42I think that even like four and 120 would make them blink.
09:45What if it's 30?
09:4630 million a year, they would have to take a hard look at it.
09:49And I don't know if they would blink.
09:50It depends on how they feel about Jonathan.
09:52But for me, 30 million is more than I'd want to pay, even though I like the player and
09:57I do think he's got a lot of upside.
09:59But if you're looking at a championship window and maximizing Steph Curry and you've got
10:0530 million to play with, if you do, I don't know if you want to spend all that 30 on Jonathan
10:10Kaminga.
10:11At this point, I don't think that in the next year or two, he's going to be as good as he
10:16eventually will be.
10:17So for me, the extension that I would give would be to Brock Purdy because I know what
10:21he is.
10:22Brock Purdy is very close to his ceiling.
10:25I don't know how much better he can get than not this past year, but the year before that,
10:30if that's as good as he can be, that's good enough.
10:33And I believe that he can be that player.
10:36And so, you know, I don't know if he can be much better than that.
10:39That was one of the greatest seasons as a quarterback we've ever seen in the NFL by
10:43the numbers.
10:44Two seasons ago.
10:45Of course.
10:46Two years ago.
10:47So I don't know if we've seen Kaminga's ceiling and you can look at the five games before
10:51he got hurt and that's like, wow, if that's, you know, kind of showing you what his ceiling
10:55would be, then yeah, that's worth 40 million a year.
10:58But I don't think this team is going to be willing to pay that.
11:00Brock Purdy just turned 25.
11:02Jonathan's still 22.
11:05I'd be pretty surprised if we've seen either of their ceilings.
11:09And I get where you're coming from.
11:11You're spotlighting one season.
11:13I'm more talking about just in general, the player.
11:16The player.
11:17Like, you believe that you've seen the best of Brock, like you don't think he can get
11:22any better than what we've seen him do.
11:24I don't know how much better anybody could be than what he did two years ago.
11:28Yeah, but that's a year.
11:29I'm talking about just the player.
11:31The player.
11:32The whole bag.
11:34You don't think he's still an ascending player?
11:36I think that he is probably as good as he's going to be.
11:39I don't think that he gets any faster.
11:42He doesn't get any taller.
11:43His hands don't get bigger.
11:45He doesn't get probably much more arm strength.
11:48No, but he gets more experience.
11:49I mean, that's what does it for a player.
11:51He's already gotten a ton of experience.
