00:00When NVIDIA's CEO told the world that the RTX 5070 would deliver RTX 4090 performance for almost 1 third of the price,
00:10I said,
00:11How much do you want to see it?
00:12But, now that it's here, it's clear that I was wrong.
00:17I'm seeing it, and yet, I don't believe it.
00:21This is Cyberpunk running at 4K on our 5070,
00:25and it is getting more FPS than the RTX 4090 that is right beside it.
00:31But how many blades is that fan supposed to have?
00:35And does my car have extra bumpers?
00:38Impossible without artificial intelligence.
00:40Obviously, the RTX 5070 was never going to match the 4090's capabilities without a little bit of, uh,
00:47AI doping.
00:49But come on, I was at least hoping that it would beat the RTX 4070 Super in raw power.
00:55And yet, in Alan Wake at 1080p, these two cards are dead tied,
01:00and at 1440p, it wins by a mere 1 FPS.
01:04Is there anything to be excited about?
01:07Well, yes. In spite of his advancing age, LeBron is actually dunking better than ever.
01:11No, I mean about the RTX 5070.
01:15Sorry, despite Nvidia's advancing profits, dunking on them is better than ever.
01:19All right, then. Let's get to it.
01:22After this layup, to our sponsor, ThreatLocker.
01:25I went to their Zero Trust World event last month where they had some awesome activities
01:29and even unveiled a few new advanced features like web control and patch management.
01:34Click our link in the description or keep watching to the end of the video to learn more.
01:46Since this is currently Nvidia's entry card for the 50 series,
01:51why don't we start with our entry resolution?
01:541080p with all real frames, no DLSS upscaling, and no ray tracing.
01:58And you know what?
02:00While we actually did get identical performance to last year's 4070 Super in Alan Wake 2,
02:06we did find improvements in some other titles.
02:09Black Myth Wukong sees a 5% increase,
02:12and we even got a sizable 8% improvement in average FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 and in Returnal.
02:19Unfortunately, that's where our good times stop rolling.
02:24Because in Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part I, and F1 2024,
02:29the 5070 actually loses to the 4070 Super?
02:36I need a moment to process this.
02:38Okay, I'm good.
02:40And now it's time to add insult to injury because not only does it lose to its last-gen counterpart,
02:46but in F1, it also loses to AMD's RX 7800 XT,
02:52a GPU that launched a year and a half ago for 500 US dollars.
02:57But, all right, Linus, maybe the move to GDDR7, though,
03:02is gonna help it pull away from the crowd when we kick our resolution into mid-gear.
03:08Mid-gear is 1440p.
03:09Oh, boy, you guys better be ready for this,
03:12because instead of tying in Alan Wake 2 this time,
03:15the 5070 wins by one frame per second.
03:19But instead of losing to Red Dead Redemption 2, it ties this time.
03:24As for the rest, it looks like overall at 1440p,
03:27the 5070 manages about a 4% improvement over the 4070 Super,
03:33though this card was never meant to compete in traditional raster.
03:37Let's talk more about ray tracing results.
03:40Let's do, because it turns out when NVIDIA uses AMD's Kryptonite and starts tracing rays,
03:45the 5070 pulls away from Team Red pretty handily,
03:49beating even the mighty 7900 XTX on average across our 1080p test suite.
03:54However, it is worth noting that if we remove Black Myth Wukong,
03:58which was a bit of an outlier,
04:00it falls back to bouncing in between the 4070 Super and 4070 Ti.
04:05Wait, try to read positively.
04:07Okay.
04:08The good news is that at 1440p,
04:11who am I kidding?
04:13It's literally the 4070 Super again,
04:15with only Returnal standing out as a clear win with a 6.5% uplift.
04:22As for 4K, guys, we didn't even bother testing that
04:25due to the 5070's anemic 12 gigabytes of VRAM.
04:29What is the deal with this card then?
04:32The 5070 Ti might not be available at its MSRP,
04:35which totally blows,
04:37but at least that card performs in theory.
04:40It's like 30% better than this thing.
04:43That is not a Ti, non-Ti difference.
04:47So why does the 5070 feel like a whole lower class of card
04:52rather than a proper 70?
04:54Well, because it pretty much is.
04:57We won't dive too deep into NVIDIA's new Blackwell architecture
05:00since we've done it a few times already,
05:02but we do need to talk about which Blackwell dies
05:05goes into which cards.
05:07Because it turns out that the 5070 Ti is using the GB203 die,
05:12and while the 5070 is using the GB205.
05:16And unfortunately, in this case,
05:18a higher number does not mean that it's better.
05:21It has significantly fewer RT cores,
05:23fewer Tensor cores, fewer shading units,
05:25fewer TMUs, and fewer ROPs,
05:28and I think you get the point by now.
05:30And if we actually go back in time
05:32and compare this to the 3070 family,
05:34both of those use the same GA104 chip,
05:38with the only changes being a 4% bump in CUDA cores,
05:41a 2% bump in clock speeds,
05:43and an upgrade from GDDR6 to GDDR6X memory.
05:48Oh, sorry, Linus.
05:50That's why they perform similarly,
05:52but one being a bit more Ti than the other.
05:56This time around, the 5070 Ti is more like a cut down 5080,
06:01and the 5070 is more like a roided out 5060,
06:05which would be fine if they were priced accordingly.
06:09Okay, but surely there's gotta be somewhere
06:11that this card stands out.
06:13Oh, and there is,
06:15but I don't know if you're gonna like it.
06:18To NVIDIA's credit,
06:19their AI improvements in their Blackwell architecture
06:22do really shine through in, well, our AI tests,
06:26where not only does it beat the 4070 Super,
06:29but it seems to perform more like a 4070 Ti Super.
06:34Of course, with that said,
06:35AI workloads really benefit from lots of VRAM,
06:39and the 12 gigs on this card
06:41definitely ends up preventing it
06:43from being legitimately useful with larger models.
06:46The updated media engine is another bright spot, though.
06:49The 5070 pulls ahead of the 4070 Ti Super in DaVinci Resolve
06:53and even gets within striking distance
06:55of the 5070 Ti in Premiere Pro.
06:59But with that said,
07:00if you were thinking, oh, sick,
07:02well, the 5070 is a productivity wunderkind then,
07:05don't get ahead of yourself,
07:07because in our Blender Barbershop test,
07:09we are right back to 4070 Super performance.
07:12Maybe it runs super cool and efficient, though?
07:15About that,
07:16while the 5070 looks like
07:18its bigger Founders Edition brothers,
07:20there's one key area here
07:22where it loses the genetic lottery.
07:25Only one of those two fans
07:27in its blow-through design
07:29actually blows through the fins
07:32and out the other side.
07:33This resulted in us seeing a 73 degree average in F1
07:37and a 77 degree average in combustor.
07:41Yikes.
07:42It's not thermal throttling or anything,
07:44but this puppy is getting as hot as the 5090 was,
07:48which is a little surprising,
07:50given it's using less than half of the power of the 5090.
07:54It is a much smaller card,
07:56making it easier to fit in a small form factor build or something,
07:59but just make sure you've got plenty of ventilation
08:02so it can stay cool.
08:03As cool as you'll look in our new Framework hoodie
08:06with the all-over embroidery.
08:08It's expensive, but it looks cool.
08:10LTTStore.com
08:12It definitely is cool, isn't it?
08:14Oh, you're back.
08:16All right.
08:17Dunking aside,
08:18the question is,
08:19is this new card for anyone?
08:21And believe it or not,
08:22the answer is yes,
08:24but it probably isn't you.
08:26See, the target market for the RTX 5070
08:29is not your PC gaming enthusiasts
08:32or your PC building enthusiasts.
08:34It's gamers,
08:36which sound like the same thing,
08:38but hear me out.
08:39See, enthusiasts are gonna peep at pixels.
08:42They're gonna obsess over the little details,
08:44whereas gamers,
08:46well, they just demand more pixels and higher FPS.
08:49And whether you personally like AI upscaling
08:52or NVIDIA's frame generation technology,
08:55which interpolates extra frames from fewer real ones,
08:59there's no doubt that NVIDIA has delivered on
09:02lots of pixels at high frame rates.
09:04And if you enable those features,
09:06the 5070 really does match
09:08or even beat the raw numbers
09:10of last generation's flagship.
09:12And most gamers,
09:14unless their base frame rate is so low
09:16that they notice the sluggish input latency,
09:19probably won't care.
09:22And I guess that's fine.
09:24The problem though,
09:26is that not every game supports
09:27these magical more FPS buttons.
09:30And in unsupported titles,
09:32this card is a steaming pile.
09:34And the only silver lining
09:36is that I guess by sucking so hard,
09:39it probably won't get scalped much.
09:41Oh wait, no,
09:42there is one other silver lining.
09:44If you can wait about 24 hours,
09:46AMD is launching a price competitor to this thing
09:49that has 33% more VRAM
09:51and on paper,
09:52much better performance.
09:54Of course,
09:55it's AMD we're talking about here.
09:56So,
09:57I'll believe when I see it.
09:58Just like I'll believe this segue to our sponsor.
10:02ThreatLocker,
10:03their Zero Trust World cybersecurity event
10:05happened last month.
10:06And I attended to check out
10:07some of the super cool sessions and workshops,
10:10along with some hands-on demonstrations,
10:12like where we used a Hack5 rubber ducky
10:14to mess around with some laptops.
10:16And there was also guest speakers like Reggie Fils-Aimé.
10:19They also announced a few new features.
10:22Insights collects data
