Thanks to MSI for sponsoring this video! Check out their MPG 272URX QD-OLED monitor at https://msi.gm/SC1EDD22

The RTX 5090 is a beast but it's incredibly expensive. Meanwhile, video games are releasing in poorly optimized states, making it harder to run at higher resolutions with higher settings. Is a better experience worth two THOUSAND dollars?

20:16 ARE WE BUYING IT?/Outro
Transcripción
00:00I love gaming in my theater room, but despite all the marketing from Sony, Xbox, AMD, NVIDIA,
00:06when it comes to high refresh rate and reasonable settings, 4K is still tough to run.
00:13Part of my problem is that I skipped NVIDIA's 40 series, so in the lead up to the 5090 launch,
00:18I said, both Ploof and I went on the record, if all the rumors are true, we are buying
00:23one.
00:24As someone with a monitor, I wanted even more performance than I'm getting from my 4090.
00:28On the subject of monitors, MSI sponsored this video with their new MPG272URX, a 27
00:34inch 4K 240Hz gaming display, and the premise is simple, we're gonna build a top of the
00:39line gaming PC, do a little ad hoc testing with the RTX 5090, and when we're done, each
00:45of us has to cancel our pre-order or pull the trigger on a 2900 Canadian dollar gaming
00:52doohickey.
00:53Plus tax.
00:55But here's the thing, why is this decision so complicated?
00:58I mean, whether you think the price is justified or not, the 5090 is clearly at the top of
01:03the charts.
01:04But the issue is that I don't play any of those games that we tested, do you?
01:09Not really.
01:10We choose our benchmarks to paint a well-rounded picture of performance, not to try to cover
01:14every popular game.
01:16Well, today we changed that.
01:18Not only did the lab get us benchmark numbers for all of the games in our suite, including
01:22many you didn't see in the review, but we're gonna throw in random titles that I want to
01:26play, that he wants to play, and that you want to see us play, all at 4K.
01:41Big moment, plugging it in.
01:42Considering this graphics card costs $2,000, setting it to anything other than high or
01:48very high just feels bad, man.
01:50But, counterpoint, considering that this GPU costs $2,000, getting low frame rates
01:57feels pretty bad, man.
01:59And so does lowering the resolution.
02:01DLSS might have come a long way, and Reflex 2 might fix some of our latency issues with
02:06frame gen, but Reflex 2 ain't out yet, is it?
02:09Sure isn't.
02:10And it won't do anything about the artifacting and general weirdness that we did still find
02:15noticeable in our 8K gaming video.
02:17That's especially true in the monitor you happen to own.
02:19I also own a monitor.
02:21Is like 115 inches.
02:23So, the way that I see it, DLSS is on the menu, but if I'm spending this much on a GPU,
02:30I don't want to generate frames, I want to render frames.
02:34As for an FPS target, okay, my theater display is 120 hertz.
02:39Is that too much to ask?
02:40Not for $2,000, especially when most modern mid-tier or high-tier TVs start at 120 hertz
02:46refresh rate.
02:47And some monitors can do more.
02:50Both our monitor and our GPU today support DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20.
02:55It runs at up to 80 gigabit per second, meaning 4K, 240 hertz can be done now with no display
03:02stream compression.
03:03I have not actually experienced this yet, so I can't wait.
03:07That's a pretty monitor.
03:10Whoa, she's sharp, dude.
03:14Let's start with a game that really benefits from a high-resolution display and that really
03:18punishes your system at higher detail levels and higher view distances.
03:23Wow, that is smooth.
03:26I have never seen this game look this smooth.
03:30Really?
03:31Oh, dude.
03:32Yeah, your 1% lows, they go as low as like 50, oh, 40, but depending on what you're looking
03:38at, it's pretty reasonable.
03:40Oh, 100%.
03:41Look, it's a really well-optimized game, like you can run it on Intel-integrated graphics.
03:46That was one of their targets when they developed it, but that would be at low.
03:52And once you start pushing it up to higher details and higher resolutions, it is an extremely
03:56punishing game because there is so much detail.
04:01There's a ton going on.
04:03We're one game in and I'm already like, you're making a much bigger upgrade than I am because
04:09I could probably run Anno at home, 4K, maybe not quite those settings and still get pretty
04:14good FPS.
04:15That's true.
04:164090's strong.
04:17It's a great card.
04:19Yeah, 3080 is also strong.
04:22But old.
04:23A little dated.
04:24What's next?
04:25Halo.
04:26This is running amazingly.
04:27It really is.
04:28I have it absolutely cranked.
04:30Yep.
04:314K, ultra everything, ray tracing on.
04:34For a competitive shooter, it's a great looking game in any configuration.
04:40Maxed out, it's gorgeous.
04:42But how many of the games that you play are this demanding?
04:45Well, okay, I gotta be honest with you.
04:47Probably 90% of my gaming time right now is in an indie hockey rogue-lite called Tape
04:52to Tape.
04:53Yeah, it's great.
04:54But it isn't demanding.
04:55It's really not.
04:56But I do need to see how it runs.
04:57How many FPS we got in here?
04:59472 FPS, let's go.
05:01You think you can win with 400 FPS?
05:03I think I could win with 400 FPS, yeah.
05:05I think you need 1,000.
05:06Bah!
05:07No!
05:08That's way too far.
05:09Oh, I got it.
05:10Nice.
05:11Dang it!
05:12Enough of my games, though.
05:13Wanna take the driver's seat?
05:14Sure.
05:15I've got four games, three of which were actually mentioned by our community as well.
05:18FF7 Rebirth, Stalker 2, and Path of Exile 2.
05:22I'm actively playing all three of those.
05:24And then a fourth one came out today.
05:26Today?
05:27Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
05:28Wait, that's the one where the recommended system requirements for 4K30 is a 4080.
05:34That's right.
05:35Let's start with Final Fantasy.
05:38At home, I'm typically getting, in Gungaga Village or other towns, about the 120 cap,
05:44and then it goes down to 1% of like 50, 60.
05:49You know?
05:50This doesn't look that different.
05:51It doesn't look that different.
05:52This actually looks about the same as what I'm getting on my 4090.
05:57So I don't know if it's just bottlenecked by the FPS cap, or what.
06:02But I gotta say, this is actually another point in my 4090's favor, because this is
06:11what I'm playing right now, and this is about the same.
06:15I was really hoping for those 1% lows to be a bit more stable.
06:19Yeah.
06:20That's one out of four, and I've gotta say, I don't have any reason right now to upgrade.
06:25Go ahead and start your next game.
06:27Alright, next up, Stalker 2, Heart of Chernobyl.
06:29This game came out a little later last year, and it is hard to run.
06:35I get close to like 60 or 80 averages, and my 1%s are bad though.
06:42Whereas...
06:43Right.
06:44So right now you're using DLSS to get it to run at all, which I know you don't like to
06:47do.
06:48Yeah.
06:49I prefer turning it off.
06:50And I'm getting numbers better than I normally get with DLSS on.
06:56Not much, but we're getting like 90, 85 average.
07:01With...
07:02Looks very playable.
07:03This is very playable.
07:041%s are like...
07:05They do go down to 50 or so, but they're usually around 60.
07:08I do wonder though, how much of that is the 9800X3D we have in here, and how much of it's
07:14the GPU.
07:15Yeah, because a whole platform upgrade would be cheaper than upgrading your GPU.
07:20We were talking off camera about how he just convinced one of his friends to upgrade their
07:23monitor rather than buy a 5090, because there's other things you can do to make your games
07:29run better, other than just buying a new GPU.
07:31Yeah, or at least look prettier.
07:32It's just that he already has like sick everything else, so...
07:38I was really hoping for it to work a little worse than this.
07:43You're like the one guy I can think of who looks at the new product he's planning to
07:47buy and is like, oh, I really hope it sucks.
07:50Yeah, it's expensive.
07:51Okay, let's see how much DLSS helps.
07:55Triple digits with 1%s just hit triple digit.
07:59Oh, they're usually like 80, 90.
08:01Okay.
08:02All right.
08:03Well, it's markedly improved.
08:05Next up is Path of Exile 2.
08:07While we wait for that, it's a good time to tell you about our new Sport Button-Up Shirt
08:11from lttstore.com.
08:12It's stretchy, lightweight, and remarkably comfortable.
08:18I normally get like 90 to 150 FPS average.
08:22I mean, that's a huge range.
08:24It's a huge range, I know.
08:26I've actually been trying their new controller support.
08:28It's actually pretty good.
08:29It's frustrating to me because it runs well, except when it doesn't.
08:33And sometimes I see major dips below triple digits in maps, so it does get even worse
08:37than that.
08:38Okay.
08:39It's all over the place, just like it normally is, but I'm seeing instead of 90 to 150, we're
08:45seeing like 212 down to like 175, and it's doing exactly what I wanted.
08:52No, my triple digits.
08:54I'm still staying.
08:55Okay.
08:56We're still getting stutters every now and then, but that's kind of just the game.
09:00Does it feel different?
09:02It doesn't feel that much different, but it's hard for me seeing those numbers.
09:06Like I'm seeing 1% of like 112.
09:08Don't look at the numbers.
09:09Don't look at the numbers.
09:10How does it feel?
09:11It feels good, but it felt good before.
09:14Do I want it to feel good-er?
09:15Do I want to pay that much money to make it feel good-er?
09:18Oh, man.
09:21I'm going to put this one as another win for the 50-90.
09:24Okay.
09:25All right, then.
09:28Last but not least, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.
09:31Sorry, I keep leaning into the frame because I'm like-
09:34I know.
09:35I know.
09:36Five-layer Tandem OLED panel, boys.
09:39Sure looks pretty.
09:40It really does.
09:41In any game.
09:43And MSI has asked us to point out that you can make your whole desk look pretty too with
09:47Windows Dynamic Lighting Certification that syncs lighting effects across multiple devices.
09:52I know this is the start of the game, and it might get a little harder to run later
09:55once we're in a forest, but 140 average and like 130, 1% lows, 120.
10:02I don't know how badly it's going to make my 40-90 cry, but I do know that if I go home
10:08now and I boot this up and I'm getting-
10:12Less than 100 in your 1% lows.
10:14Less than 100 in my 1% lows or even in averages, I'm going to be real upset now that I've seen
10:20this.
10:21You are such a diva.
10:22I'm going to be real upset.
10:23You know that, right?
10:24I know, but I just want it to look good.
10:26We're seeing the odd dip.
10:28I can deal with that.
10:30It's almost impossible to fully fix random hitching, especially in new games.
10:36But I mean, look, I'm fighting people and I'm getting like 120, 130 FPS.
10:41I, man, okay.
10:44Now it's time for us to look at some community picks.
10:47First up, Indiana Jones.
10:49At 8K, this ran surprisingly well.
10:53Oh man, 140, 150, 130 FPS average.
10:58Man, this is such a good looking game.
11:00Yeah, it really is.
11:02Those 1%s are rock solid above 60.
11:05They're like 80 to 110.
11:06I would turn it up.
11:07Yeah, let's do it.
11:09I don't need 120 FPS in a more cinematic exploratory game like this.
11:16Go up one notch because path tracing is demanding.
11:18Ooh, turn on indirect illumination though.
11:20Sure.
11:21Oh, that's full RT.
11:22I don't think she's going to do this.
11:24You've got like a solid 60, 70 FPS average.
11:27I wouldn't play it like this.
11:28No?
11:29No.
11:30I mean, move the mouse.
11:31Yeah, that feels bad.
11:33Yeah, I wouldn't play it like this.
11:35Okay, fair enough.
11:36What if the DLSS was turned on?
11:37We can try it.
11:38120, 115 FPS average.
11:401%s are like 70, 85.
11:43We're only on, we're on quality too.
11:45So overall, usually when you have it set to quality, it looks pretty darn good.
11:49It really does.
11:50Just buy a 5090.
11:51You know?
11:52You can't tell people that.
11:53Just buy it.
11:54It's easy.
11:55It's so cheap.
11:56It's so...
11:57You want your games to run good, don't you?
11:58Just spend $2,000 US dollars on a graphics card.
12:02That's more than what most people spend on their computers.
12:04When you're on your deathbed, do you want to look back and think of how many FPS you
12:08could have had if you had just...
12:10That was so cringy.
12:11It's a reference.
12:14This monitor may only be VESA TrueBlack 400 certified, but it can also reach up to a thousand
12:19nits.
12:20And it can do that without issue because MSI's got their OLEDCare 2.0 to help reduce the
12:24risk of image retention.
12:26And if it does happen, they've got a three-year warranty that covers that specifically.
12:30Time for Flight Sim 2024.
12:3237 FPS average, 30 1% lows.
12:35Yeah, okay.
12:39It's hitching every now and then, which kind of sucks.
12:40Like I'm seeing 1%s of literally four, like single digit 1%s, but you know, the rest of
12:46it's pretty okay.
12:47Should we turn on DLSS?
12:48You know, we're not getting that much more frames per second though with DLSS on.
12:52No.
12:53It went up to a solid 45 instead of 33 or so.
12:56It's got 40 FPS, 1%s are like 30 plus.
13:00The hitching is bad though.
13:01It really kind of is.
13:02We have to turn this down.
13:03Yeah.
13:04Okay.
13:05Let's do that.
13:06Let's turn it from ultra to one set under.
13:08So we're getting closer to 60 averages, 1%s of like 45.
13:12This feels a lot better already though.
13:13This is incredible.
13:15The density is so high.
13:17You don't need Flight Sim to run at 200 frames a second.
13:23No.
13:24It's a slow and steady game.
13:25The stutters, they do happen sometimes worse than others, especially here with all these
13:30like cityscape.
13:31It heard you talking about it.
13:32It did.
13:33But you know, they go away and then it's like, it's smooth sailing again.
13:37Flying.
13:38Well, it's flying is just sailing in the sky.
13:41Time for a very demanding game.
13:43Star Citizen.
13:44DLSS.
13:45Well, it's just off.
13:46So whatever.
13:47HDR.
13:48Sure.
13:49It's enabled.
13:50Blah, blah, blah.
13:51Very high.
13:52High.
13:53Sure.
13:54Let's just let it be cranked.
13:55All right.
13:56It's barely doing 60 average.
13:57The extra cents are like a solid 10 sometimes.
14:00I'm going to take a look at a few more of these.
14:01You want to come back for crisis?
14:03Sure.
14:04Let's try Elden Ring.
14:05It's capped at 60 FPS, but you know, hopefully those 1% low stutters are gone.
14:09All of our settings are maxed out at 4K ray tracing cranked.
14:13We've hit our cap and we're still stuttering every now and then.
14:17Next game.
14:18For GTA Online, looks like we're using about five gigs of video memory set to 4K, 240 Hertz.
14:25Everything is basically cranked.
14:27That's not bad.
14:28You know, 155, 160 FPS average, 1% lows, 140, 150.
14:35I think that if you're playing GTA 5 or online with a 5090, I don't think you have anything
14:41to worry about when it comes to performance at 4K.
14:44Baldur's Gate 3.
14:46Everything cranked.
14:47We're getting 210 frames a second.
14:49Our 1% lows are sitting 150 to 200 FPS.
14:55Let's check out Minecraft next.
14:57It's got everything set to, you know, max render distance, max simulation distance.
15:02Everything else is turned on or set to max.
15:06So you might get some initial hitching, but now we're seeing 230 FPS average.
15:111%s are around 200 as well.
15:14Minecraft is running pretty well, but you know what?
15:16We can make it look a little prettier than this.
15:18Now we've got Minecraft with BSL shaders and it looks incredible.
15:23I'm still getting like 165 FPS average, 150, 180.
15:281% lows goes deep down as like 36.
15:32I think that if you want to play maxed out Minecraft at 4K with a 5090, this is a very
15:39comfortable gaming experience.
15:42Next game.
15:43Okay, 4K, HDR, PQ10, share, reflex, on with boost.
15:50Okay, now we're looking at Cyberpunk.
15:53No ray tracing, no DLSS.
15:56It looks great.
15:57It runs great.
15:59Next game.
16:00As for ARK Survival Ascended, this one's very unoptimized.
16:03We're at 4K, render scale set to 100%, even though DLSS is set to off, just in case graphics
16:09is all pretty maxed out here.
16:11I'm getting like 100 FPS average, 1%s dipping into 50s, but they're, you know, they're usually
16:18around 65, 70.
16:20This is very playable.
16:22Now let's play another game you guys requested that wasn't great at launch, but has, you
16:26know, become pretty good over the years, Fallout 76.
16:29I've got everything maxed out, 4K, and I'm getting 240, 260 frames a second, rock solid
16:37performance.
16:38You know, your 1% lows are going to dip, but it's not anything that you're going to feel
16:41terrible about.
16:42I don't experience any hitching right now.
16:44Now time for BeamNG.
16:46We've got it set to 4K, ultra preset.
16:50I haven't touched any of these.
16:51It can be turned up a little more, but I think ultra preset is more than fair.
16:55All right, we're getting the odd hitch.
16:58Just chilling on the beach here, but otherwise I'm seeing, you know, 300 FPS.
17:03It's actually a pretty rock solid 1% lows, as low as 175, going up into 200, 240.
17:09I know this isn't the most scenic environment, otherwise, you know, it's pretty solid.
17:15Let's check out Black Ops 6, 4K, native resolution, extreme graphics preset.
17:21Yeah, we've played almost a full match and I'm still getting like 160 average frames
17:25a second with lows of like 144, 150.
17:29It's a small map and it's not Warzone.
17:31I don't know if Warzone handles a lot worse than this, but this seems more than playable.
17:36Another one you guys requested is Destiny 2.
17:39We're in 4K, everything is cranked.
17:42I'm sure our 1% lows aren't that awful.
17:44Like I'm not feeling any hitching.
17:46Game is just working.
17:48Feels great.
17:49Steven, if you're watching this, 4K, Destiny 2, 50, 90, 250, 300 frames a second, you know
17:57you want it.
17:58Of course, of course they want Crysis remastered.
18:02Yeah, there were a few nerds.
18:04There were a lot of people asking for the original Crysis.
18:08Everything is set to can it run Crysis.
18:10HDR on, it does have it.
18:11Very good.
18:12113 FPS though, average 1% is dip pretty heavily down to like 30, but now that it's kind of
18:18settled down, it's, you know, around a hundred, 110.
18:22Dude, the shadows on the gun.
18:26They look really good.
18:28That water.
18:29Look at the beach.
18:30Oh man.
18:31Look at these shadows.
18:32Look at these shadows, bud.
18:36Look at the lighting inside here.
18:38You get that hard lighting coming in from the sun.
18:41Oh man, this is just, this makes me want the new card.
18:43Before we're allowed to make a final decision, we have to look at the labs results.
18:47These reveal a key thing that our ad hoc testing cannot.
18:51Look at how poorly the RTX 3090 has aged.
18:55When the 40 series came out a couple of years ago, it was a hundred dollars more for double
18:59or darn near double the performance.
19:02Well, that made the price feel somewhat justified given that it was a decidedly next gen card.
19:08But the 5090 is another $400 or about a 25% increase in price for about what, 20 to 30%
19:15performance bump on average.
19:17Is it a bad upgrade?
19:18I mean, not if you have the money to throw at it, but you're not getting nearly the same
19:21feel good moment that upgraders got last time when they plugged in their new card that I
19:25got fired up their favorite game and then saw a night and day performance improvement.
19:30Atomic Heart sees a jump into triple digits, but then a decent uplift with the 5090.
19:36The Skylines 2 goes from cinematic to playable to slightly more playable.
19:41The other CS2 sees decent gains from generation to generation as does Shadow of the Tomb Raider
19:46and to a similar extent, Tiny Teenage Wonderlands.
19:49But when we include the rest of today's list and games we tested for the review, most of
19:53the charts look like this.
19:55Rocket League, Total War, Warhammer 3, Returnal, F1 24, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption
20:04Dota 2 is a weird outlier, but we're pretty sure it's just CPU bottlenecked, giving me
20:08another excuse to not upgrade to a 5090.
20:11Guess what game out of this whole list I've got the most hours in?
20:13Dota 2.
20:14That's right.
20:15By a wide margin.
20:16I'm getting deja vu.
20:17This feels a lot like going from the 2080 Ti to the 3090.
20:21Back then people paid an extra $500 MSRP for about a 20 something percent performance uplift.
20:27Although they did get a whack of extra VRAM, the performance was meh.
20:32And it was the RAM capacity that was more desired.
20:36Miners cared while Ethereum was still a thing, the productivity benchmarks looked great,
20:40and gamers were starting to care about getting more VRAM for higher resolution gaming.
20:45And we're seeing kind of the same thing play out now, except this time it's the AI crowd
20:49instead of the crypto miners that are enjoying the 32 gigs of VRAM on this thing.
20:54As for the productivity guys, well, hey, more faster means more money so they can recoup
20:58their investment.
20:59But do you need 32 gigs of VRAM for gaming?
21:04Even at 4K?
21:06Not now and probably not ever if I'm being honest.
21:09Ever's a big word, but like, you know, not ever right now.
21:13So then after all this, the 8K gaming, the labs testing, the 4K gaming today, are you
21:20going for it?
21:21But don't answer that yet because I wrote an email to myself with what I'm going to
21:25say to Ploof.
21:26I wrote this on January 30th.
21:29Okay.
21:30If I could sell my 4090 right now and go and buy a 5090 tomorrow, I'd do it.
21:38But I don't want to sell my 4090 right now and then wait three months maybe for a replacement
21:44card.
21:45I'm going to sit on my pre-order and I'm not going to cancel it.
21:48No, you have to make a decision.
21:49You've got to tell the people.
21:50I'm canceling it then.
21:51I'm canceling it.
21:52You're canceling it.
21:53No way.
21:54I got it wrong.
21:55I got it wrong.
21:57You got it wrong?
21:58You guessed that I would?
21:59I'm calling it.
22:00You're buying it.
22:01I got it wrong.
22:02Wow.
22:03Wow.
22:04There were a few big things.
22:05The Dota 2 performance.
22:06Not that I need more than 400 frames a second in Dota 2, but like, that's the main game
22:09I play.
22:10The Final Fantasy thing was huge.
22:12That was a big deal.
22:13I was really hoping that it would really fix those 1% lows.
22:16Stalker 2 was, that one was tough.
22:19That was actually really hard for me seeing it crack 100 plus FPS.
22:24I can't wait for his I caved tweet.
22:27I deleted Twitter.
22:28Because I'm calling it.
22:29I'm calling it.
22:30I'm still calling it.
22:31I'm not uncalling it.
22:34That's how this is going to be.
22:35I will email Memory Express today.
22:37Well, tell you what.
22:39I'll take it because I'm going for it.
22:41All right.
22:42I've got a 3080 in my gaming system.
22:44Huge upgrade.
22:45Huge.
22:46It's an enormous upgrade for me.
22:47But what I'm not going to do is buy more than one of them for my multiple gaming PCs.
22:52So I'm going to have to finally figure out a smooth way of sharing it between here and
22:56the theater room.
22:57Maybe you can give me a hand with that.
22:59I'll do it if you give me this monitor.
23:01Come on.
23:02You know, it's only $10.99.
23:03MSI won't mind.
23:04I want the 98 watts power delivery and the DP 2.18.
23:09Okay.
23:10I think it's pretty well established.
23:11You already have a monitor.
23:15Thanks again, MSI.
23:16We'll have everything we used today linked in the description below if you want to check
23:18it out.
23:19And thank you for watching this video.
23:21Take a look at the other one we did where we gained an 8K on the 5090.
23:25If you are one of the dozen or so people that has a monitor and has an 8K display.
23:31There are dozens of you.
23:32Dozens of you.
