00:00All right, so here we are, standing on top of the Big East, we're on top.
00:12It's our destiny.
00:13If we want to win the Big East, if we want to continue, it's there for you to take it.
00:19You're good enough to do it, and you have to understand, it's going to be a fight.
00:23If you make a mistake in this game, it's over.
00:27With only a month left in conference schedule, Rick Pitino is coaching St. John's to a history-making
00:33season.
00:34But to remain one of the most talked-about teams in college basketball, the Red Storm
00:37must beat two nationally ranked teams, beginning with number 11 Marquette.
00:43In the corner, Larry, another for Cal John's.
00:49Four and a half to go, it's high game, first place on the line in the Big East.
01:11Rick Pitino, his biggest win without a question of a doubt, the king of college basketball.
01:25There's a lot of questions for St. John's, who is now 11-3 on the season, 2-1 in the
01:30Big East.
01:31They are just one of seven teams in the country who is top 40 in offense and top 10 in defense.
01:40But there is growing frustration that is mounting on the offensive side of the ball.
01:45You're sitting there and scratching your head that a team that has so many dynamic athletes
01:50is finding such a hard time scoring the ball.
01:54It seems to be stagnating on the offensive end, and it starts with what we all knew was
01:58going to be the problem, and that's the three-point shooting.
02:00Keep moving!
02:01Come back!
02:02Stop!
02:03There should have been somebody on the other side turning out this way.
02:06Wake the f*** up!
02:08If you want to build a program that wins in college basketball, the people that play for
02:14you, to train at you, strength coaches, assistant coaches, everybody needs to be doing it the
02:19right way.
02:20Come on guys, we've got to get this.
02:21You're not preparing to win.
02:23You're preparing to lose with the way you're guarding their plays.
02:26You can get to where you want to go if you're willing to sacrifice and work hard.
02:32Run again!
02:33Every pick and roll looks bad.
02:35Everyone looked bad.
02:36You have to have that type of trust in the people that you work with.
02:40The only way to play that, Reuben, is for you to stop it.
02:43Because if they don't have the work ethic, and you've got to stop looking, you've got
02:47to go!
02:48You're looking!
02:49Or the passion for the game, run it again, and are doing the wrong things, run it again,
02:56they just are not going to get it done.
02:59Run it again.
03:01You're going in the arc on this, looking for it, and then getting out.
03:06Alright, fist is the ghost.
03:07Alright?
03:08Alright, the back, the five step out, set the back screen for the two, then the five
03:11lifts, then we've got zoom action on either side if we can't get it inside.
03:16Along with the players, the coaching staff also hears it from Patino when he believes
03:21they're not living up to the same exacting standard of excellence he applies to himself.
03:28I was Rick Patino's graduate assistant coach in the 1986-87 Providence Friars season.
03:35It was a work environment.
03:36This was not like some family affair where we were eating pasta at the Patino's house.
03:42There are some people you work with, some people you work for.
03:44You work for Coach Patino.
03:47You know, he was up your ass every minute of every day.
03:50If you ever escaped the wrath for 24 hours, you breathed a sigh of relief.
03:56Believe me.
03:57If this is it, if he's all set in the three point line, if they come together, we can
04:00blow that up.
04:02Team coaches at St. John's help communicate the game plan before tip-off, including breaking
04:06down the defensive strategy against their opponent.
04:09They shoot the basketball, 42% from three, right?
04:14Great catch and shoot guy.
04:15Be there on his catch.
04:16But knowing what they'll do and stopping it is where games are won and lost.
04:26Once catch and shoot opportunities, right?
04:28Locate him early, take away the attempt, and then play off the bounce.
04:32Brooks gets a pick.
04:33That's a deep jab.
04:34And he hit it.
04:35Oh my goodness.
04:37He's looking for opportunities early and often.
04:39They need him to go.
04:40Be between him and the basket, chest him up.
04:42Take away.
04:43Don't let him get to the paint.
04:46He works his way in deep.
04:47Good looking shot.
04:49Elford leads.
04:50Throw it up off the glass and it goes.
04:53Wow.
04:57Be between him and the basket.
04:58Chest him up.
04:59Chest him up.
05:00Chest him up.
05:01Get Richmond off of him.
05:04Nice soft shot.
05:05Butler goes into the half with the momentum up forward.
05:08St. John's got a lot to talk about.
05:10You're making yourselves look bad because you can't guard a team because you're not
05:13listening to how we were going to defend them.
05:16You have no leadership on this team, just so you understand.
05:18Now make up your f***ing minds what you want to do.
05:24Oh, nice block.
05:26Blocked by Aaron Scott.
05:27Scott the other way.
05:28Scott to edge and floor.
05:30Hey now.
05:33Full court pressure here by the vegetable.
05:35Oh, he dribbles right into the double team.
05:37It's Lewis.
05:38Overtime.
05:40Two dunks right there coming off their defense and this young man right here, Talik Brown,
05:43a big part of the St. John's coaching staff.
05:48I'm an assistant coach.
05:49I basically do a little bit of everything.
05:52Working with Coach Patino, it's hard.
05:55You know, you got to really be locked in.
05:57You got to be detailed.
05:58You got to love the game.
06:00You just got to try to match his energy and it's hard to match his energy at that age.
06:07Finally, executing on their defensive plan, St. John's overcomes the deficit and pulls away.
06:13Stolen by Richmond.
06:15Richmond to the glass.
06:16Put it up, Benny.
06:19However, the gritty comeback is marred.
06:21At the end of the game, the sophomore guard, Simeon Wilcher, attempts a showboating dunk,
06:26a move considered by Coach Patino to be disrespectful of your opponent at the end of the game.
06:32That's humiliating and embarrassing.
06:34I don't understand it.
06:36If he would have made it and went in, he would have been nationally ridiculed.
06:40So many things are bothering me right now that I just, I gave up drinking for New Year's,
06:46but I think I'm going to have the shortest resolution in the history of mankind.
06:50We know we've been good, bro.
06:51They suck.
06:52We just said that.
06:53Nobody said anything.
06:54We played well.
06:56Simeon's showboating dunk attempt, on top of the team's up-and-down performance,
07:01leads to bickering in the locker room.
07:03Finally, assistant coach Talik Brown has heard enough.
07:07Shut the f*** up, man.
07:09Shut the f*** up.
07:11What the f*** is wrong with y'all, man?
07:15All y'all motherf***ers.
07:16I'm tired of all y'all motherf***ers.
07:18Shut the f*** up.
07:20What the f*** is wrong with y'all?
07:23We here for one f***ing goal, that's the win.
07:25We all here for one another.
07:27We don't got time for that bulls***.
07:42Let me have the red team right here.
07:44Corner three, come up right below the foul line for the backdoor cut,
07:48then go to the end of the other line.
07:50Ready? Go.
07:52Despite the come-from-behind victory over Butler,
07:54the grandstanding dunk attempt by Simeon Wiltshire,
07:57who was called Sim for short,
07:59the bickering in the locker room,
08:01and the stern reprimand by assistant coach Talik Brown
08:04make a lasting impression on the team.
08:07It was not just about Sim. It was just about everybody.
08:10I don't think everybody's together.
08:12I don't think everybody got one goal.
08:14It was long overdue, and they had to hear it from me.
08:17We have great assistant coaches on our staff.
08:20I always called them future head coaches,
08:23and Talik was saying all the right things.
08:26I don't know what was going through my head.
08:29It really was not a good look, to be honest.
08:34When it gets super loud and the fans are into it,
08:37it's like an extra adrenaline rush.
08:40That was very, very dumb, and embarrassing not only for myself,
08:43but for my team and my coaches.
08:46We had to just win the game and show class for our opponents.
08:50We had a meeting, and...
08:53it was just like...
08:56you trip it.
08:59Got my locker cleaned out.
09:01Just trying to think about the future
09:03and make some steps towards the right direction now.
09:06It was somebody who wasn't following orders.
09:09And when you don't follow orders,
09:11bad things can happen to a basketball team.
09:15Stop, stop.
09:17It's really imperative that you yell pop so he squares up.
09:21Because he's going to take the line.
09:23Once you hear pop, you've got to square up, the down's over.
09:26Here we go.
09:28It's very easy in a coach's world to let something go, and he doesn't.
09:32He is obsessive about the details,
09:35because he knows that 6 inches that you're off
09:38is going to be the difference, in his opinion,
09:40and probably accurately, between a win and a loss.
09:43You're holding the ball like this, looking at one side.
09:46Elbows out, pivoting, looking at both sides.
09:49When he was at Louisville, first practice I ever sat with him,
09:51he had a microphone on,
09:53and it was like listening to the voice of God.
09:57But back in 2001,
09:59when Patino takes over the basketball program at Louisville,
10:02the only voice many top recruits hear
10:05is the one telling them to play one year and go pro.
10:09Jamal Mashburn, handful of players notwithstanding,
10:11really has never been the way Rick operates.
10:14When I took the Louisville job, we did it our way,
10:17because that's what I knew.
10:19Young players are too much into instant gratification.
10:23Their patience level's not there.
10:25Their learning curve is not there.
10:27I think the more older players you have,
10:29the better chance you have of winning.
10:31It's tough at first. It's really hard for freshmen.
10:34You've got a coach on you, then you might not be playing,
10:37and those recruits were guys who were hungry.
10:40They wanted to work hard, and they wanted to grind.
10:43We recruited good players
10:45that believed in doing things the right way.
10:48It became about finding guys who understood,
10:51I'm all yours, mold me.
10:53They want to be with Rick Patino,
10:55and they're willing to give him his all.
10:57So yeah, he's building a team with players
10:59that nobody ever heard of.
11:01Wayne Blackshear,
11:03Luke Hancock,
11:05Shane Bahannon,
11:07Terrell, Gorky Zhang at center.
11:10Because he's accurately arrogant enough to know
11:12he's going to make you better if you listen to him and develop.
11:16Russ Smith, he was a kid, no one recruited him.
11:20A lot of times he would say stuff,
11:22and it kind of kept pushing me,
11:24and it kept taking me further.
11:26Without him coaching, I don't know where I'd be in my career,
11:29so I owe a lot to him.
11:31Peyton Steven and players are freshmen.
11:33They became All-Americans because of patience.
11:38But very little patience in players today.
11:43Stop, stop. You've got to understand.
11:46The pick and roll, you're going to get help.
11:48The reject, you're going to get no help.
11:51Perhaps no player on St. John's
11:53has had his patience tested more this season
11:55than R.J. Lewis.
11:59The high-scoring wing was hindered last season
12:02by reoccurring shin splints that required off-season surgery.
12:05The shin splints, I had a stress reaction,
12:07so basically the bone was about to break.
12:09I had a little crack in it.
12:11That's the hardest thing, being hurt.
12:13And then you start from zero,
12:15and you've got to build your way back up.
12:17There's some days your body's going to be tired.
12:19You're not going to feel like doing it,
12:21but those are the days that you really find out
12:23what you've really got inside of you.
12:26I'm still getting back.
12:28Those muscles are still recuperating, but I'm a worker.
12:32I, myself, you know, was never, like,
12:34highly recruited coming out of high school.
12:36You know, I've earned everything that's been given to me.
12:39I'm just happy to be on the court.
12:41But R.J.'s return to the court has highs and lows.
12:45He lets his frustration get the best of him
12:48when he fouls out in his first game back.
12:50He'll foul out here.
12:52Oh, careful.
12:54Drop-kicking the ball into the upper deck.
12:57He's frustrated. Yeah.
12:59And in the Creighton game...
13:0112 seconds for the Red Storm!
13:03...he draws the frustration of his coaches
13:05when he ignores Coach Patino's drawn-up play
13:07for the final possession by failing to pass the ball
13:11and miss the game-winning shot.
13:13Lewis all the way!
13:16It wasn't the play I wanted to run.
13:18We could have won the game if we would have ran the play
13:21that I wanted.
13:23It's just unsustainable.
13:25Like, we're not going to be able to continue to win
13:27if everybody is not on the same path
13:29and just got one identity, one goal, one voice,
13:32and we're not listening to what we're supposed to do.
13:34Like, I'm just trying to do my job,
13:36hold everybody accountable,
13:38and continue to help see these guys grow.
13:40You have to come together
13:42because they kill people with this slip here.
13:44The coaching staff's efforts to get the team working together
13:47will soon face a real test against Xavier.
13:50Xavier, they're really talented.
13:52One through five, so we got to get back,
13:54match up in transition, stop the three,
13:56and just make their life difficult.
13:58Throughout the season, there's going to be a lot of ups and downs,
14:01and to be great,
14:03we're going to all need each other at the end of the day.
14:06So the question is,
14:08with only three days before their next game as Xavier,
14:11can this team come back together?
14:23All right, guys, a couple of things we're going to talk about.
14:26If you're going to be extraordinary, step up and be extraordinary.
14:29Stop being ordinary.
14:31It's all within reach for all of us,
14:33provided we have the humbleness to be patient and put in the work.
14:37And what I mean by that,
14:39I talked to Qaddari about changing his shot,
14:42but it's far different than when I talked to Donovan Mitchell.
14:46See, Donovan Mitchell really had a line drive shot.
14:49He knew that he's been shooting the ball wrong for 15 years,
14:53and unless he changes this thing, he's not going to become a pro.
14:58He knew it was not going to be that 40 minutes of player development.
15:02It was not going to be practice.
15:05Every single night that I went to the office,
15:07all he's doing is working on arc.
15:10Well, today, he has great arc on his jump shot.
15:13He's one of the league's best basketball players.
15:15The difference is he understood work.
15:19You guys don't get work.
15:23It's all of you.
15:24Ego stops the work ethic.
15:27It makes you think you've arrived.
15:29You haven't.
15:30You're just scratching your potential.
15:32And that's why I don't know if any of you guys will ever play professional basketball.
15:39If you're going to change something,
15:41you've got to put the time into it.
15:43Anything else is fool's gold.
15:46So, Qadari's jump shot, it's moving slow.
15:51But he's a very talented basketball player.
15:54He's one of the best point guards in the nation, and he's a great kid.
16:00But Qadari doesn't understand how difficult it is to make the NBA.
16:07Hopefully, he'll develop that work ethic that's second to none.
16:11Coach Pacino knows firsthand how dedicating yourself to a goal can change your life.
16:17I don't think it's any different than a lot of people that grew up in Cambria Heights, Queens.
16:22If I didn't get a scholarship, we couldn't afford to go to college.
16:26And I wanted to be a collegiate basketball player.
16:29So, you put in the time and effort.
16:31You put in the time and effort.
16:33You put in the time and effort.
16:35And I wanted to be a collegiate basketball player.
16:38So, you put in the time and effort to make sure of that.
16:42I was driven to get that scholarship.
16:45You have to have that type of tenacity it takes to get where you want to go.
16:49Good job today.
16:50Thanks. Excellent.
16:51Okay, we're going into a blizzard tomorrow.
16:53Okay, like eight to ten inches of snow.
16:56So, dress warm.
16:57Good job today, guys.
17:00Family on three.
17:01One, two, three.
17:02Family.
17:05Family.
17:11Don't you guys have any better to do than stand out in the cold to take film of us?
17:17St. John's going on the road to Cincinnati to play Xavier.
17:21It's a quick turnaround from the 70-62 win on Saturday.
17:26Xavier's a tough game.
17:27I don't have any doubt.
17:28They're really good at home.
17:29They can shoot the three better there.
17:31You know what the opportunity is in front of you guys now.
17:34This team's eight and one at home.
17:37We get them here.
17:38We've got two road victories.
17:39You've got to play all 40 minutes.
17:41You're capable of doing it.
17:42It's your opportunity.
17:43So, hit it hard.
17:44Get in the 22 on the score.
17:46Play with great confidence, but you have to play 40 minutes to win on the road.
17:49Let's get going.
17:54Going on the road against Xavier is the first opportunity for Simeon Wiltshire
17:58to redeem himself after his showboating dunk attempt at the end of the Butler game.
18:03Received a lot of backlash from it.
18:06Not really something that I want to fall myself in anymore.
18:11Let's do it, man.
18:12Win on three.
18:13One, two, three.
18:14Win.
18:15Trying to figure out how to navigate this whole thing with the way the energy was
18:21from everybody towards me because of the situation.
18:23But, I talked to God about it just to relieve myself from the thoughts that's going on in my head.
18:39Got stolen away by Richmond.
18:41Got stolen away by Richmond.
18:51On the back of the edge of four.
18:54Nice move inside on Simeon Wiltshire.
19:01It's tapped away.
19:06Wiltshire's three off the heat.
19:11Wiltshire on the other end.
19:13Dunk and a bounce.
19:16Gray kicks out.
19:17Wiltshire this time.
19:19Slice cold.
19:21Simeon Wiltshire, he was basically talking to himself when he was out there.
19:25And all he was thinking of was his performance.
19:29It's kind of in my head a lot.
19:31I just wanted to have some type of impact to the game.
19:35But, that's not really the way to go about things.
19:38You know, sometimes he's just mentally in his head where he's just got to stay focused.
19:42He's taking his own self out of the game.
19:49And, I just patted him on the head and said, let's go man.
19:51Get it together.
19:53Four point deficit.
19:57Wiltshire behind the back.
19:58Lays it up and in.
20:01Swain running into three.
20:03Red Storm now.
20:04St. John's the other way.
20:07Long to Scott.
20:10He's got so much talent.
20:11Like, Scott's the limit for that kid.
20:14In the cans.
20:15Johnny's going the other way.
20:16Kick up the hand to Wiltshire.
20:19You got a lot of veteran guys who knows what it's like to be in those situations where
20:22it backs up against the wall.
20:24Either you're going to curl up or you're going to fight your way out of it.
20:27Wiltshire launches for three and buries it.
20:30I think it says a lot about Sime.
20:32His character.
20:33His commitment to growing.
20:35His self awareness.
20:36But his also trust for Coach Tino to develop him and get him to where he wants to go.
20:40Xavier's going to let this one wind down for St. John's.
20:45It was awfully impressive tonight, Parker.
20:47After an impressive win, the Johnnies are now four and one in the Big East.
20:52But their schedule only gets tougher from here with some nationally ranked teams looming.
21:03Who's playing with us today?
21:06Your sister.
21:08The life of an assistant coach during the season doesn't allow for a lot of downtime.
21:12So Coach Steve Macielo takes a spare moment off to spend time with his wife.
21:17There's no really day off.
21:19You know, it's not like you can just shut off for the day.
21:22You're still worried about what we got to do better.
21:26It's challenging.
21:28But we both make a lot of sacrifices.
21:31And we make it work.
21:32He loves us.
21:36Come on.
21:47Come on, Macielo.
21:49Guys, I need a 30 second.
21:50I need 30 seconds.
21:51A quick conference call.
21:54Go ahead.
21:56Hello?
21:58I'm good. Go ahead.
22:01Yes, stuff went out to the guys.
22:03The edit went out as well.
22:04And the stuff is in their lockers.
22:05So we did all that this morning.
22:06So they all got that.
22:08Once a walk-on player at Kentucky for Coach Patino,
22:11Macielo knows better than most that working for him means always being on call
22:16and always being prepared, even during your time off.
22:21Coach has an unbelievable ability to create an environment
22:25that is always challenging from an accountability standpoint
22:30with all his players and especially with coaches.
22:33He's always taught his players and everyone that's close to him
22:38to hold themselves accountable for their actions.
22:41Brady, you should have covered that.
22:43They messed it up.
22:45You should have covered their asses.
22:47I've made plenty of mistakes working for him.
22:50That environment can be overwhelming,
22:52especially when you're first time going through it.
22:55Fortunately, I've been through it a lot.
22:59Four, three, four, two.
23:00They lost the ball.
23:02But it's part of building a winner.
23:05And he lives that every day.
23:07You see him, go pop.
23:09Now you lost vision of him.
23:11Now you swear.
23:13We have really built St. John's with good people.
23:16They want to do the right things.
23:25Buenas.
23:27Hola, hola.
23:28Hola.
23:30¿Cómo estamos?
23:32¿Qué tal todo?
23:34With St. John's playing next at home against Villanova,
23:36RJ Lewis gets to enjoy the benefits of playing for a school
23:39in a city with a thriving Dominican community.
23:42I try to eat here like twice a week.
23:45You know about this?
23:47It's one of those, if you know, you know.
23:52The key thing to a Dominican dish,
23:55rice and beans,
23:56fried plantains,
23:58salad,
24:00stewed oxtail.
24:02I like avocado.
24:04It's a great fruit.
24:06It's not a vegetable.
24:08It's like a home-cooked meal.
24:17The largest Dominican community as immigrants is here in New York.
24:23I felt more welcome.
24:26I love it.
24:28I never thought I was going to be playing for Coach P.
24:33Never thought I was going to be playing in the Garden.
24:37Like a dream come true.
24:43My dad played 18 years professional.
24:47He played all over the world.
24:49I remember going to Spain.
24:51I think I was in Brazil.
24:53I mean, that's my guy.
24:54You know, that's the,
24:56that's the blueprint.
24:58What I've learned from him is he's just a hard worker, you know.
25:02Nothing is given. Everything is earned.
25:07Move, RJ. Move, RJ. Don't stand. Move.
25:12This is my second year with Coach Pitino.
25:15And you know, I feel like I learned a lot about myself.
25:19RJ can put the ball in the hole,
25:21but I expect more from him.
25:25If I wanted to chase my dreams of playing at the next level,
25:28I need to grow as a player,
25:30create for others,
25:32and really just do anything I can to help my team win.
25:34Here we go.
25:38RJ got to continue to listen to his coach.
25:41He got the potential that he has to discover how good he can be.
25:49Good.
25:51Here we go.
25:53Run it again.
25:55The next opportunity for RJ and St. John's to prove themselves
25:59will take place under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden
26:02against an opponent that has won five Big East Championships
26:06and two national titles in the last decade.
26:09Villanova.
26:11Let us pray.
26:13God wants us to remember three words.
26:15Remember, celebrate, and believe.
26:17Remember who we are, St. John's.
26:18Let's get it. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go.
26:22One could make the case that St. John's is the least appreciated team in college basketball.
26:2713-3 entering tonight's game with this team shooting just 30% from three.
26:33If the Red Storm makes shots, the ceiling is high.
26:42The three-time Osleth is snapped.
26:44Smith connects and a foul.
26:49The Richmond Springfield to Etchaford.
26:59Davon Smith remains on the ground in some pain.
27:03He's been the best player on the floor for the Red Storm tonight with 12 points.
27:09And he's really starting to find his way.
27:11We are monitoring it closely.
27:17Davon Smith remains on the ground in some pain.
27:26He's been the best player on the floor for the Red Storm tonight with 12 points.
27:32And he's really starting to find his way.
27:34He hit me all it is to shoot.
27:38With this other one down.
27:41Let's go. Let's go. Let's go.
27:44Coach Pitino is no stranger to seeing a player taken down by injury.
27:48It's happened most famously in 2013 when Louisville was playing Duke with the trip to the Final Four on the line.
27:55I was sitting, my press row seat happened to be directly across from the bench.
27:59And the injury happened directly in front of me.
28:05What happened with Kevin Ware, it was so horrific, it was such a gruesome injury.
28:10And it was adversity on a lot of levels. I mean, you're losing a good player.
28:14He's your brother. Something really awful happened to him.
28:18I mean, they were literally crying on the bench.
28:21I will never forget that day.
28:23I will never forget that day.
28:25I mean, they were literally crying on the bench.
28:28I will never forget seeing Peyton Siva was crumbled on the ground, like, in tears.
28:33Like, it was catastrophic.
28:35Rick was as devastated for Kevin Ware as anybody was.
28:38Like, legitimately, genuinely devastated.
28:41And you're just thinking, like, what is going to happen with this team?
28:44I don't know that in basketball I've ever seen one like that.
28:51Kevin Ware was encouraging his teammates to finish the mission.
29:00Don't worry about me, I'm worried about you. So how about you go win the damn thing?
29:04Even though he was a seventh or sixth man, Kevin was being a leader.
29:10And when tragedy hits, every individual just needs to step up.
29:15And it was a rallying point for our basketball team.
29:20This is Rick at his best, right?
29:23Like, taking that moment and finding a way to bond a team that was pretty tight to begin with.
29:31Everybody has to care about each other in that moment.
29:34If you just wanted to do it for yourself, probably not going to be enough.
29:38He played all the right notes.
29:40I remember after they won that game saying, they're going to win the national title, you know that, right?
30:02They played hard and together and you take that energy and that effort and you give it to a person.
30:08Who can X and O better than maybe anybody in the game. Why wouldn't that work?
30:14Kevin Ware became a household name. He had calls from President Obama to Hollywood stars.
30:22He was very much a part of that championship.
30:25With Davon ruled out of the game, it is time for the team to rally and fill the void left by their fallen point guard.
30:32Now we have a tough break with Davon. Can't make us lose. We got enough talent to make up for it.
30:39You can't rest. Nobody rests. Come on, we can win this game.
30:44Every single person must step up and play.
30:46Richmond locates Lewis down low. Lewis off glass for two.
30:50Six to shoot. Lewis from the free throw line knocks it down.
30:54Lewis wants to push. Lewis bounces to Scott for the finish.
30:59St. John's back up by one.
31:02Well, Nova's going to have to put up a show.
31:04Six minutes to go. Lewis for three. It's gone.
31:08R.J. to the rescue in the second half.
31:12And it's in.
31:14It's in.
31:16It's in.
31:18It's in.
31:20It's in.
31:22It's in.
31:24It's in.
31:26It's in.
31:28It's in.
31:30It's in.
31:31It's in.
31:33It's in.
31:35It's in.
31:37It's in.
31:39It's in.
31:41It's in.
31:43It's in.
31:45It's in.
31:47It's in.
31:49It's in.
31:51It's in.
31:53It's in.
31:55It's in.
31:57It's in.
31:59It's in.
32:01It's in.
32:03Adjai, your hustle was amazing.
32:11Really proud of this. It was a great win for us.
32:14It was a grind-out, tough win.
32:17With a bad situation, but not dislocated, which is a good thing.
32:20It's going to be soft for a couple of days.
32:23For St. John's next game against the Hoyas of Georgetown,
32:26Simeon Wiltshire will need to step up, playing point for the injured Smith.
32:31Black, St. John's in the home white. Richmond attacks. Richmond
32:37got it. There's a vibe in this building of New York City
32:41starting to bind in the Patino era here at St. John's. RJ
32:45Lawrence hits his time and that'll say goodnight to the
32:49Hoyas. St. John's is 6-1 in the Big East for the first time
32:54since 99. You fought hard and you didn't have it tonight but
32:59your fortitude won the game. When you don't play well and
33:03you win like that, that tells you what you're all about and
33:06you're all about winning and I'm really proud of that.
33:13Richmond with a jump stop and a deuce. They're trying to back
33:17it in but Richmond says no problem. Lewis. Little slam
33:24time, hammer time jam. Oh, this is gonna bring Rick's team to
33:2816-3, 7-1 in the Big East and the Red Storm moves forward.
33:35Well, you got all kinds of excitement here at Madison
33:39Square Garden in New York City. Tied at 65, a Big East battle.
33:43But Kedari Richmond and St. John's on the attack first.
33:47Richmond could be the best player on the floor every
33:49single possession.
33:52That'll do it right there. What a win for St. John's. The Red
33:58Storm wins its sixth consecutive game.
34:08Good pass fade by Richmond. That's a well turned exit. Fist
34:13pump from Rick Pitino. Richmond for three. It's good. And the
34:19loose ball scooped up by the Friars. Richmond rips it away
34:22and scores with the foul.
34:26Richmond. Another three. With eight seconds left. Now he's
34:32gonna go. Richmond fighting through Pierre. Richmond from
34:35the free throw line. Good, good. St. John's wins its eighth in
34:41a row. On the first day of February, a March field.
34:56Let's run it. Let's go. Stop. Deku. Deku. Why is he going by
35:04you? He didn't do anything. He didn't make a move. He didn't
35:08shake you down. He just dribbled the ball. Get your
35:12head on the ball. That's not the way you're supposed to
35:14play it. Here we go. A huge one for St. John's coming up.
35:21Marquette on Tuesday. This eight and oh stretch, this
35:24eight-game winning streak has been great. But you haven't
35:27played Marquette yet. Run it again. There's no rest for Rick's
35:31team. Every game is a step closer to a championship. And
35:35every game matters more than the last. And this game against
35:38Marquette will be the toughest test yet.
35:45After missing five games, Davon Smith returns for St. John's
35:50biggest game of the season against nationally ranked
35:53Marquette in a battle to hold on to first place in the Big
35:56East. Alright, so here we are standing on top of the Big
36:02East. We're on top. If we wanna win the Big East, if we wanna
36:09continue into the top ten, it's there for you to take it. And
36:14you have to understand, it's gonna be a fight. But you know
36:18that. Hit people, get on the floor for loose balls. You must
36:23play every second of this 40 minutes. You're up six in the
36:26game, it's meaningless. The next four minutes, you win that.
36:31That's what teams that wanna win a championship are all
36:33about. It's not about you. It's about the team. The tougher
36:38team defensively is gonna win this game tonight. Okay? Let's
36:41get it. Come on.
36:45St. John's hasn't won a Big East regular season title in
36:49more than 30 years, but this could be the team. Marquette
36:53chasing them in the conference. I definitely thought the season
36:58was over. I thought I was out. To feel like you have to start
37:01right back over. Definitely challenging, but this journey
37:07we're on is special and I definitely wanna be a part of
37:10it.
37:20I still hear Lewis wisely.
37:24Take it away by everybody.
37:46We'll zone again.
37:55This is as prototypical of a Big East game in this arena as
38:02you're gonna get. It is a fistfight. It is.
38:12He nearly walked. He'll drive and score.
38:19Cam Jones of events with three fouls. Chase Ross gives it up.
38:28We've got nothing decided so far. Fight. It is a fistfight.
38:35It is. I'm trying to give you the answers to the exam and you
38:40think I'm blaming you for something. Now, start taking
38:44corrections the right way. It's not criticism. It's strategy.
38:48You guys have never been coached before. Stop being
38:53little children. You gotta get in gear and play. You're a good
38:55team. We can beat them if you're the better defensive team.
39:06The victory is one of the greats.
39:11Monitoring something I do.
39:14By Lewis.
39:19Lost down the line.
39:24Next time, edge of four, two, and a foul.
39:31Richmond is two, just pulling in the lead. Jones goes left hand.
39:38One of the great class users.
39:43The largest lead in the game. Seven right now for St. John's.
39:49Parham in the corner and out of reach.
39:53And they can elevate it to a half one.
39:57You've gotta make some good play-by-plays. You can't be a watcher. You've gotta be an active guy.
40:03Be a better defensive team. Don't fall asleep. You've gotta be alert now.
40:10Let's go, Johnny! Let's go, Johnny!
40:18He turned on him and...
40:22Get in the way! Get in the way!
40:26In the corner.
40:30And a no.
40:34For the tie. It's good.
40:39Tie game. First place on the line at the Big East.
40:47Scott has four fouls. Gotta watch out. Jones the miss. Rebound Richmond.
40:53Smith streaking down the line.
40:59Steps inside. They want the three. Ross can't find it.
41:03Look at the rotation and the effort. This is utterly incredible.
41:08Scott's defense by the first place team of the Big East, St. John's.
41:13And that is not that possession.
41:34The longest win streak since the Final Four team 40 years ago.
41:53You're defying all logic, statistically.
41:57You shoot 34% in the first half, I think you were 2 for 9 from 3, and you're down 1.
42:02Because you have tremendous heart and you make big time plays.
42:07You're coming back from missing 9 days. You're a great player.
42:12You'll get it all back. Qadari, you're going like this.
42:17You are like a stock that's going through the roof. You deserve a lot of credit.
42:22You are a buy stock, 100%.
42:27We're proud of you. It was a great win. We're still in first place. Nobody's knocking us out.
42:32It's all about this inside your chest. You have it. You've got it all.
42:37Everybody up. Here we go.
42:42Family on three. One, two, three. Family.
42:47As a coach, you always learn something new every day.
42:52He told me his favorite quote, nothing changes, nothing changes.
42:57I feel like that helped me. I just began working harder.
43:02This is a big test, but they keep getting better. Qadari's getting better.
43:08He plays now full court hard the entire night.
43:16I'm so proud of this damn team. How hard they play.
43:20They deserve all the credit in the world.
43:23It's exciting to see my team win in an old-fashioned way, which is good old hard work.
43:30Coming up next time.
43:32You guys have a chance to make history. This place is rough.
43:35Stewart for three now.
43:37Head hit. Get out.
43:40Ball, quick release. Got it.
43:42Guys, come on. I don't mind losing a game, but with this type of heart?
43:48You're on national TV, and you look like you're little children out there.
