00:00Pope Francis authorizes to canonize Venezuelan physician Jorge Gregorio Hernández.
00:20In Peru, prosecutors summon President Dina Boluarte for corruption and cover up the Cali,
00:26Burma and presidential treasury cases.
00:32And the fact that Syrian President Abu Mohammed al-Julani, renamed Ahmed al-Sach al-Shara,
00:38opened a national dialogue conference in Damascus.
00:46Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:51We begin with the news, stay with us.
00:56The Vatican issued the first update on Pope Francis' health on Tuesday, reporting that
01:12he had a good night's rest.
01:14The Supreme Pontiff has been in hospital in Rome for almost two weeks.
01:19In the last two days, although his condition is complex, he has shown a slight improvement.
01:24The doctors and the Holy See press office say that he is not out of danger.
01:29The Catholic faithful of the world, coordinated by the Churches of Spontaneously or Espontaneously,
01:35have united in prayers and petitions for the health of Pope Francis.
01:40On the last day, the presidents of Cuba, the United States and Venezuela once again wished
01:45him a speedy recovery.
01:53Pope Francis authorised the canonised Venezuelan José Gregorio Hernández.
01:57On a communiqué, the Supreme Pontiff approved the favourable votes of the Ordinary Session
02:02of the Cardinal, Fathers and Bishops, members of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
02:09By this official announcement, the Holy See formally stated that the popularly known as
02:14Doctor of the Poor will be declared a saint, which date hasn't been set yet.
02:19This is the first time the Catholic Church proclaims a Venezuelan faithful saint.
02:24The decision was grounded on the vast legacy of Gregorio Hernández, who has been devoted
02:29by not only Venezuelans, but also Latin Americans and Caribbean.
02:37With great joy, I can announce that today, our beloved Pope Francis approved the positive
02:42opinion of the Cardinals and Bishops of the Dicastery for the Causes of Beatification
02:48and Canonisation.
02:50He has approved the virtues of our dear, blessed José Gregorio, who will soon be a saint.
02:55Pope Francis will convene a Cardinal Session where the date of canonisation will be announced.
03:02May God give much health and life to our dear Pope Francis.
03:07And may we soon celebrate the canonisation here in Rome, and in Caracas a solemn Mass
03:12to give thanks to God for this great gift.
03:16In this regard, the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro expressed the gratitude of the nation
03:21for the canonisation through his social network Telegram, the head of the state said.
03:27Venezuela thanks Pope Francis for his historic gesture of canonising the Doctor of the Poor,
03:32our saint, Doctor José Gregorio Hernández.
03:35It is a great step and gift he has made to our homeland, an act of justice to a man whose
03:42faith in life was the protector of the most humble, and who has always worked the miracle
03:47of health and life for those who have needed it the most.
03:51I thank the Pope for this gesture with Venezuela, especially at this time when we all pray for
03:56his health, well-being and recovery.
04:00Love is repaid with love.
04:02Pope Francis, thank you forever.
04:04And in other information, in the north of the Venezuelan capital, the coffee harvest
04:15season is coming to an end.
04:16Our colleague Shah Daffo went to meet small farmers who carried out their first production
04:22after two years of work with ecological techniques.
04:26El Parque Nacional Guaraíra Repano, situado en la cordillera de Guaraíra Repano or Ávila
04:31National Park, located in the coastal mountain range, is a green land bordering the city
04:35of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.
04:37There, two years ago, the farmers of the Laderas estate began to plant coffee, finding in the
04:43height of the mountains and in the shade of the forest the ideal conditions for the production
04:48of the plant.
04:49However, it was a bigger challenge than it seemed, given that part of the land had been
04:52deforested by previous owners.
04:56The forest is better because of the humidity and shade.
04:59We are recovering trees, planting them all over to get good shade.
05:03You know that the best coffee, supposedly, is in the shade.
05:08The soil, impoverished by decades of chemical use, also had to be recovered with organic
05:12fertilizers and environmentally friendly techniques.
05:19We are trying to create a new topsoil with chicken manure, horse manure, all totally
05:24organic, from here, from the area.
05:27It is all handcrafted, organic and handmade.
05:33According to agroforestry principles, the sustainable balance lies in crop diversity,
05:38which also brings advantages for the producer.
05:44Integrating the coffee element into an ecosystem without breaking the ecosystem.
05:49Shade production, a productive shade.
05:52That the producer can benefit from the shade, in addition to the benefit for the coffee,
05:56the shade could have some added value, like planting avocado and soursop trees.
06:03In other words, to integrate a whole positive project around regenerative agriculture.
06:10This February, the first coffee beans were harvested from the farm, but there are still
06:13some steps to be taken before they reach the consumer.
06:16The artisanal process requires care and a lot of patience.
06:22It is quite a long process, harvesting it, fermenting it, drying it in the sun, it takes
06:29a long time.
06:30Then we take it to roast it, so that it reaches the public, the cup.
06:37The expectations are good because, in spite of some points that were missed, I believe
06:41that the coffee was harvested at its optimum moment.
06:46We did a process to improve, to modulate the flavors, in terms of fermentation.
06:54We already have a small batch that was threshed a few hours ago.
07:00The first visual of the coffee is spectacular, so I think it promises to be pretty good.
07:09In the past, Venezuela was one of the world's main producers and exporters of coffee, but
07:14Production dropped during the second half of the 20th century due to the predominance
07:18of oil.
07:19Today, the new expansion of coffee in the country, in the framework of economic diversification,
07:24is an opportunity to rethink the means of production, as was done in the Laderas.
07:28In this sense, Venezuelan coffee, on top of meeting internal demand, has a great potential
07:33to compete in the world market, as a growing demand requires constant upgrade in production
07:38quality.
07:40And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember, you can join us on TikTok
07:46at Telesudio English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and more.
07:51We'll be right back, stay with us!
08:09And the scandal over the Libra cryptocurrency scam continues in Argentina, despite attempts
08:16by President Javier Millet to dismiss the allegations against him.
08:19The Argentine head of state headed a cabinet meeting in which he discussed a probable appointment
08:25by decree of judges Ariel Lijo and Manuel Garcia to the Supreme Court of Justice, as
08:30well as the consequences of the so-called CryptoGate scandal against his government.
08:36On the other hand, Argentine opposition deputies requested a special session to promote a parliamentary
08:41investigation of the cryptocurrency scam.
08:44The scandal not only affects the image of Millet's government, but also calls into
08:49question transparency and ethics to the public administration.
08:58Peruvian prosecutors sue President Dina Boluarte for corruption and cover-up in the Cali-Guarma
09:04and presidential treasury cases.
09:06The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, will testify for the second day in a row on Tuesday,
09:11after being questioned about the alleged use of presidential car for the escape of the
09:16leader of Peru Libre political party, Vladimir Cerrón.
09:20In the previous session, President Boluarte also answered nearly 50 questions in an interrogation
09:26that lasted more than five hours.
09:28The public prosecutor's office expects the president to attend again, although it has
09:33not yet been confirmed whether she will testify while the public prosecutor's office evaluates
09:38the evidence and the development of the case.
09:45More than half of Ecuador's workers are in the informal sector, the National Institute
09:50of Statistics and Censuses announced on Monday.
09:53A survey for January 2025 shows that the figure has increased by 1.4% compared to last January
10:02and is the highest recorded in the country since 2007.
10:06According to the data, only 34% of the country's workforce is formally employed.
10:12This huge increase, which puts informal employment at 56%, means that these workers lack work
10:19warranties, security, holidays and social security, among other important conquests of
10:26the workers' struggle.
10:32In Bolivia, the government started up a steel plant that will produce 200,000 tons of iron-derived
10:39construction materials per year and require an investment of over $500 million.
10:45Our correspondent Fredy Morales gives us details.
10:51The plant is located in Puerto Suarez, near the Brazilian border, and will use iron from
10:56El Cerro Mutin, one of the world's iron reserves.
11:00The truth is that it is a great satisfaction for me, today as municipal mayor of Puerto
11:08Suarez, to witness and represent those generations that have fought tirelessly for more than
11:1580 years to see this dream come true.
11:24The steel complex will produce 200,000 tons of steel per year in a first phase, which
11:30means half of these materials that the country has been importing until now.
11:39Now that we are going to put this complex into operation and we are going to start producing
11:43steel, we will generate more than 700 direct jobs and more than 2,000 indirect jobs.
11:51This is what the steel complex represents in social terms.
11:59President Luis Arce recalled that the financing of the complex used state resources and a
12:04loan from the government of China.
12:11This is an investment of $546 million where there are three actors involved to finance.
12:17First, the financing of the Chinese government, whom we thank infinitely, as well as the brother
12:21ambassador of that country, through him.
12:32A big hug to Brother Xi Jinping, second the resources of the Central Bank with a credit,
12:37and finally, to complete all this, the General Treasury of the nation that is being invested,
12:42along with resources that are here to invest and fulfill the dream of so many Bolivians.
12:54The complex will produce rebar and wire rod in its first phase.
13:02This is a clear demonstration that the Bolivian state has to be and is the fundamental actor
13:06to advance towards the industrialization of our country.
13:11Industrialization is not just a story.
13:12It is a reality.
13:19We are showing the whole country that it is possible to industrialize the country, that
13:23this depends on the political decision of a government determined to build a solid and
13:28diversified economy in our country.
13:37The mutant iron ore deposit is one of the largest reserves of this mineral, with 40,000
13:42million tons.
13:43Its production of 200,000 tons per year means that the state will save some 250 million
13:48dollars in foreign currency that it used to spend on this import.
13:56Survivors of internal armed conflict march in Guatemala's capital.
14:01Carrying photos of the murdered and disappeared, dozens of people walk through the historic
14:05center of Guatemala City to commemorate the National Day for the Dignity of the Victims
14:10of the Armed Conflict.
14:12The demonstrators want to honor the memory of the more than 200,000 victims and disappeared
14:17left behind by the military dictatorship.
14:20The march, which began at 10 a.m., also denounced the failure of the current government to fulfill
14:26its promise of dignity for the survivors.
14:42Authorities in Havana, Cuba, informed Tuesday that search and rescue units found the lifeless
14:47body of the boy who had been missing during the floods that affected the Cuban capital
14:52on Monday.
14:53The victim was identified as 13-year-old Jonathan Oliva, who was sucked in by a street drainage
15:00system as he was crossing a flooded street in his neighborhood.
15:04The floods were the result of torrential rains that preceded the arrival of a cold front
15:09that hit the western part of Cuba.
15:18At least nine people have been killed in Botswana after flooding caused by widespread
15:23rains.
15:24Authorities reported that more than 5,000 people were affected by the weather phenomenon.
15:29They also detailed that the rains caused a local dam to overflow, causing cars to be
15:33swept away and infrastructure to be partially submerged in water.

16:16Welcome back to From the South.
16:35The Israeli occupation continues its aggression on the city of Jenin and its refugee camp
16:40for the 36th consecutive day.
16:42To date, the Zionist operation in Jenin has left 27 Palestinians dead, dozens of injuries
16:48and detentions amidst widespread destruction of property and infrastructure.
16:54The number of displaced people from the camp has reached 20,000 and about 430 homes have
17:00been completely or partially destroyed.
17:022,000 students have been deprived of attending their schools and about 178 people from the
17:09city and the camp have been detained since the beginning of the aggression.
17:18More than 160 doctors and medical personnel from Gaza are currently being held in Israeli
17:24prisons, undergoing severe mistreatment and torture.
17:28Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights Israel
17:33have denounced the arbitrary arrest and inhumane treatment of the detainees.
17:38One of the prisoners is the director of the Kamath Adwen Hospital, Hossam Abu Safia, who
17:43was arrested during a military operation in December.
17:46The detentions of these professionals have significantly weakened the health system in
17:51Gaza, which was already under enormous pressure due to the recent conflicts.
17:56These actions have been described as violations of international humanitarian law, which protects
18:01health workers in armed conflict.
18:09The FACTO Syrian President Abu Mohammed al-Dulani, renamed Ahmed al-Shara, opened the National
18:15Dialogue Conference in Damascus.
18:18The initiative, aimed at outlining a political future for the country after the overthrow
18:23of President Bashar al-Assad, did not start off on the right foot.
18:27The Kurdish party denounced that, like other groups, they have been marginalized.
18:32The main session, intended to discuss the structure of a new constitution and the creation
18:37of new institutions, among other issues, is being seriously questioned.
18:41In the south, protests broke out against the submission of the de facto government to Sionist
18:47plans.
18:48In Rome, the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, COP16, will resume from February 25th through
19:0027th at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO,
19:07Previously, in November, COP16 participants sealed a deal which made companies share profits
19:14with the owners of those lands they take natural resources from, namely from the indigenous
19:19communities.
19:20Notwithstanding, COP16 didn't make a quorum to negotiate needy environmental agreements
19:26back then.
19:27Therefore, the event's organizers decided to hold resumed sessions for COP16 to address
19:33agenda items left unresolved.
19:36One of the main concerning issues to be tackled is to hammer out a financing plan to reach
19:41200 billion dollars a year for nature by 2030, including 30 billion dollars a year from wealthier
19:49countries to poorest ones.
19:55And with this information we have come to the end of this news brief, but remember you
