00:00You maniacs! You knew it! You knew it would be out again!
00:04Here's a look at the brand new NECA Toys Planet of the Apes Guerrilla Soldier Ultimate Action Figure!
00:31More brutish by nature and heavily armed,
00:36the soldiers of the guerrilla army strictly enforce law and order in ape society
00:40and guard against threats from the forbidden zone.
00:42Punishment comes swiftly for lawbreakers as well as for any wild humans caught stealing ape crops.
00:47Figure comes included with machine guns, clubs, snare stick, interchangeable heads,
00:51removable backpack and bandolier.
00:53It's a madhouse! A madhouse, I tell ya!
00:56But maybe though British pop singer songwriter Seal was right when he said,
00:59we're never gonna survive unless we get a little bit crazy.
01:02I bet you we're gonna get really crazy when we get down to the details on the Planet of the Apes Guerrilla Action Figure
01:06from the courtesy of folks over at NECA Toys.
01:08I can't believe though I've referenced not only the 60s Planet of the Apes,
01:11but also a line from one of Seal's songs.
01:14That's what we do here on this channel.
01:16Let's though take the tape measure and see how crazy though things get.
01:19Now this is actually gonna be using the same body as the original Guerrilla Action Figure
01:23that we've gotten from Planet of the Apes.
01:24I'll show you guys though that in a second.
01:26He's gonna still stand the same at 7 inches in height or about 18 centimeters tall.
01:30Speaking of NECA, by the way, I'd like to thank the folks over there
01:33that did provide the sample we could have a look at.
01:35As mentioned already though, this is using, yes, the same guerrilla body and the head for that matter
01:39as the original guerrilla that we've gotten from Planet of the Apes.
01:42Although this one here has slightly looser ankles.
01:44I haven't had these guys out on display for a long time.
01:46Other figures we can also bring in as well.
01:48Here's Dr. Zaius.
01:49Now we're actually already gonna be getting a Dr. Zaius
01:52as part of this new release of Ultimate Action Figures.
01:54And while I don't have those, Zero is gonna be part of that wave.
01:57I do certainly have Cornelius.
01:59I was kind of looking online too in the prices of what these things are going for now.
02:02I think Cornelius on his own, if you can get him sealed, is going for like $150.
02:06Talk about crazy!
02:08Promise, by the way, this is the last time I'm gonna say crazy.
02:10Look at the crazy amount of accessories that come included with the Guerrilla Soldier.
02:13The figure though does come included with some things that already were packed with the first release guerrilla.
02:18Like, for example, the figure does come included with a rifle.
02:20I wanted to bring off the rifle here.
02:22I think I have most of the accessories from the original Guerrilla.
02:25And you can see though that the rifle seems to be exactly the same.
02:28At least casting wise, it's exactly the same.
02:30If I just get the blasted strap out of the way.
02:32Yeah, the molding seems to be the same.
02:34Although the original one, the one on the top here that I'm waving around frantically, frantically,
02:38that was all cast here in black plastic.
02:40Maybe the new one that we're getting here is also cast in black plastic,
02:44but they've painted very nicely in chestnut brown.
02:46It does have, of course, a shoulder strap.
02:48So you can strap this around the shoulder of the Guerrilla Soldier if you certainly would wish.
02:52You can also crisscross applesauce and also just match it with the bandolier angle as well.
02:56Maybe I'll just do that as well.
02:58You know what, let's fix the matter here.
03:00I just basically bring this around his head.
03:02The plastic, at least for the strap, is soft enough that you should be able to stretch it.
03:06The figure also does come included with a baton.
03:09Now, the first one that we did get here, I want to make sure I've got them.
03:13Is this the right one?
03:14I don't think it really matters.
03:16They seem to be, again, exactly the same.
03:18You actually get two versions, two different batons here.
03:20The clubs themselves do have a little ringlet here down below.
03:24The original one also had this as well.
03:26The top one is the original one.
03:28I want to make sure I'm keeping track of everything.
03:30And the bottom one, do I have the right ones?
03:32Yeah, the bottom one here is the newer baton.
03:34There is a couple of variations, though, to it.
03:37So you can see, if you look at just the ones that are coming included with the Ultimate Release,
03:40there's a little more of a narrower baton or club.
03:43And then there's a wider one as well.
03:45Depending on which one, I guess the guerrilla soldier would like to use to start clubbing the wild humans.
03:50And let me tell you, there's plenty of wild humans around.
03:53The thing that's neat about this, though, is like with the original one,
03:55if you just kind of move the arm out of the way,
03:57there's a hook right here on the end of the bandolier.
03:59The original one had this as well.
04:01So you basically just take yourself that little ringlet and you fit it.
04:05Oh, you need good eyes for this.
04:07Luckily, I'm eating still a lot of carrots, so I think my eyes are still pretty good.
04:11Plus, I also like to think, too, Canadian reviewers, I think we have better eyes.
04:15Ooh, I shouldn't be saying that.
04:17If I can get that now on here.
04:19There we go. All right.
04:20So you put the little baton there on the side.
04:22Let me just scratch the record of what I said earlier about good eyes on Canadian reviewers.
04:27Anyways, though, you can see, you can take the baton.
04:29You can also do that with both clubs, by the way.
04:31It's just really hard, though.
04:32I mean, like, look at the size of that hook.
04:34Look at what little we have to work with when it comes to the size of that ringlet.
04:37Let's get that off, though, at least right now.
04:41Just drop the other baton.
04:44I keep calling these batons.
04:45They're technically called clubs.
04:47I think baton sounds a little bit more polished to myself.
04:50But, yeah, you get two of these.
04:52And one of them, at least, probably this one, is the like-to-like, club-to-club.
04:57These are the closest ones in comparison.
04:59And, again, you just get two variations of those.
05:02The thing that's really neat about this is not that he necessarily comes with a swappable hand.
05:06I mean, I guess that is neat.
05:07One thing, though, is that I wish that he actually had two of these.
05:10He has these wide-gripped hands, I think, for holding the understock of the gun, which is fine and good.
05:16But I think, though, like, if he has two gripping hands, that would be perfect for having him holding two different accessories.
05:21With the way that the hands are sort of designed now, you have one wider hand, which, again, like, is no fault at all.
05:27I mean, it's certainly suitable best for, like, holding, like, the rifles and stuff because they have a wider handle.
05:32But then he's also got pretty much that same idea on the other side as well.
05:35I think, really, it could have benefited this figure from having, like, a pair of these.
05:39So then you can have him holding, like, for example, the snare with both hands.
05:43Did you just say snare? I did say snare.
05:45One of the things that are new, though, with the Ultimate Release Guerrilla Soldier is the fact the figure does have a snare.
05:50It starts, though, at the bottom when you get it outside of the packaging like this.
05:53But you can actually just bring this up.
05:55If you had yourself a tailor, what's the likelihood we're ever going to be getting some of these humans?
05:59If you had a tailor, for example, that could just, like, hook around Taylor's neck.
06:04He doesn't really like that all that well.
06:06But I like the idea that this does actually move back and forth.
06:09This is using, though, a real cording.
06:11So you don't have to worry, like, it's plastic, for example.
06:13Plastic probably would snap.
06:15A real cord certainly has a lot more give.
06:17I love the idea that this can swivel back and forth.
06:20This probably will end up being the thing I'm going to display the figure with.
06:23Now, I already talked about the fact the figure does have a rifle.
06:26He does technically also come included with another machine gun.
06:29This was, I don't think, packaged with the original one.
06:32Or if it was, I probably may have already lost it.
06:35But it's cast basically in the same, that chestnut brown.
06:38Really looks good.
06:40Again, you've got yourself a little clip that's not removable or anything like that.
06:43And more likely than not, this is the reasoning why the hands are as wide as they are.
06:47Because if you look at the hands and then you look at the handles,
06:50I mean, he clearly needs to have wide hands to accommodate holding the rifle or machine gun in his hand.
06:55Just like that.
06:57Lastly, I shouldn't say lastly because he also has a couple of swappable heads.
07:00Lastly, I guess, second lastly, let's get first of all the rifle and move it off to the side.
07:06He does also come included with a backpack.
07:08Again, first time I think we've gotten this accessory with these figures.
07:12Unfortunately, disappointing though that the front of this does not open up.
07:15Had this been something that could have opened up like what we got with the Dungeons and Dragons backpack,
07:19where you could actually have stored some of all of those accessories sprinkled over there,
07:23that would have been perfect that this could have been a storage space to hold all of those.
07:27But what you do get though is a decent looking backpack, got straps on the side,
07:31and then you got this strap in the middle here that's supposed to go around his waist.
07:35There's a hole right here and then there's a peg right there.
07:39And if you meet them right in the middle, connect the two together, you can strap that around his waist.
07:45I'll show you guys all that near the end of this review.
07:48Lastly, though, the figure does come included.
07:50This is the part that's lastly.
07:51Lastly, he does come included with three interchangeable head sculpts.
07:54Wait, you're only seeing two.
07:56Well, he technically has one already on the end of his neck.
07:59The thing that's weird about it though is that the head sculpts aren't that much different from one another.
08:04If you look at basically the one he comes out of the packaging with, he has generally more coarser fur.
08:09So that's right away one indicator that you can see there's a difference between the two.
08:13The thing that's also the most obvious is that if you're looking at them as well, yeah, it's mostly just the fur.
08:18The thing that's maybe less obvious, I should say, is look at the mouth.
08:23The mouth is sort of the thing that tells you that there's a little bit of difference between them.
08:26This has a little bit more of an open mouth, just a little bit though.
08:30Keep in mind that these were all masks, by the way.
08:32We didn't have CG back then.
08:34So when they were talking, you barely, barely could see their mouths moving.
08:38So there's a little bit of a mouth that's open here.
08:41And then you got a little wider of a mouth that's open here as well.
08:44It's just a matter of which one you would like to display the figure with.
08:47Now, I actually do like the coarser looking fur on the stock head sculpt.
08:51But I do like, though, the open mouth on maybe like this one here.
08:55One good thing about this, though, is that because it is using the exact same figure as the original one,
09:01it's using also the exact same ball joints, too.
09:03Now, to be fair, though, I had a hard time getting a head sculpt off.
09:07I did pop it off, but unfortunately what popped off as well was the other end of the ball joint.
09:11Ah!
09:14Realistically, though, this ball joint should have still stayed in the neck.
09:18And then the top of the ball joint would have been the part that I would have wanted to show you.
09:22But, though, I mean, once you heat this up, though, it does look like they are using the exact same heads.
09:27So you could really, I mean, if you have already the original figure,
09:30change it out, though, to one of the newer head sculpts.
09:32So there is then a little bit difference between the figures, the original one, and the newer Ultimate release.
09:37By the way, though, I mean, just stock out of the way they are out of the packaging,
09:41there is some notable differences between them.
09:43One of the biggest and more obvious ones is the fact that the bandolier is a different color.
09:47The new Ultimate has a more lighter tan color bandolier,
09:50whereas the original one kind of had a little bit more of a darker brown.
09:53They seem to be using the same sculpts, not only for the bandoliers,
09:57there is what it looks like on the back as well, and they both still, by the way, have hooks.
10:00The new bandolier, though, would have had only the hook down below here painted in a lighter silver.
10:05The other one, if I move this out of the way, the original one would have actually colored this darker at the top here,
10:10where this attaches to the rest of the strap.
10:12So there is a little bit of differences there, too.
10:14Now, two, being that these are also looser pieces, you don't have to commit to the idea.
10:18If you like, say, the original one, and you have the original one,
10:21easily you could just move this one over, or because, again, they're not that much different from one another,
10:25just change the head that you want to then use, and maybe even add the new head sculpt to the original figure.
10:30Vests seem to be the same.
10:32The coloring of the purple isn't that much different,
10:34although the new one, obviously, there's a little less sheen.
10:38The original one, the purple was certainly there,
10:40but it does look like there's a little more of a shinier paint finish to it.
10:43They went with more of a matte finish.
10:45In fact, actually, kind of, if you look at the purple,
10:47it looks almost to be like a little more of a metallic finish,
10:49like a little shinier silver that they've added to it.
10:52I do think, though, the newer one has it more...
10:54I think it has a better-looking paint job, honestly.
10:57Going with more of the approach of matte purple, I think, works a little bit better for the figures.
11:00Boots look very much similar to one another.
11:02There's a little more brown, I would say, to the original release,
11:05and a little less brown, and a little more of like a darker...
11:08I would almost even say like a blackish, maybe silver.
11:11The soles are exactly the same.
11:13They both have peggles on the bottoms of their feet as well.
11:16This one, by the way, though, even...
11:18You can also tell, too, that they are using the same mold
11:20as it's printed on the bottom of the foot as 2014.
11:23So we're looking at a figure that's, what, 11 years old?
11:2611 years old, but it still retains...
11:28I mean, it goes to show, like, just because the figures are that old,
11:31mold-wise, at least, if they were just as good before
11:34and they had still the same amount of articulation,
11:36where, like, the original figures, maybe, like,
11:38we're talking way long a time ago,
11:40would have only maybe had just a single hinge
11:42in the shoulder area here and nothing in the elbow,
11:45then I could certainly understand why they would need
11:47to upgrade the figure to give some new articulation points,
11:50being that the original figure already had elbow hinges,
11:53shoulder hinges, and all the things that we get now
11:55with new Ultimate figures.
11:57Can't see, again, why they would have felt the need
11:59to change anything to the original gorilla
12:01when the original gorilla was perfectly fine.
12:03For the figure's articulation, though,
12:05starting again with his head sculpt,
12:07it does rotate back and forth.
12:09It does go up and certainly goes down, back and forth as well.
12:11Whether you want to use, though, this head sculpt
12:13or, you know what, let's just change out the look
12:16of this for right now.
12:18And also, too, while I'm removing the head,
12:20you can see there's a bulge at the base of the neck.
12:22So, like, there's decent stuff going on here,
12:24although the neck is a little tighter here.
12:26We're going to go ahead and just attach the new head in place.
12:28Now, again, this would be a time,
12:30if you wanted to remove the bandolier, do it now.
12:32Do it now before you start adding new heads.
12:34Sort of just hold on to it, at least for right now.
12:36And if you may need, you may need
12:38to heat this up a little bit with hot water.
12:40I'm not doing that right now.
12:42I may do that maybe when you get to the final looks of the figure.
12:44But basically, that's the new head sculpt,
12:46or at least one of them, at least.
12:48See, there's just a little space right there.
12:50So the gorilla must be talking.
12:52Anyways, though, the arms do rotate all the way around.
12:54Same with the original.
12:56You also get a full T-pose with both the arms.
12:58The figure does also have only, just again,
13:00a single hinge in the elbow,
13:02but it allows the arm to rotate all the way around.
13:04He does have a swivel here in the hand.
13:06It rotates back and forth.
13:08The upper torso, while this still being contained
13:10in a softer plastic,
13:12has still retained a full ball joint.
13:14So you can rotate that all the way around.
13:16The original figure had that as well.
13:18Legs split out.
13:20This one leg is a little tighter on mine,
13:22but you can still get a full split.
13:24Oh! Wait, that's more like a wolf than less a gorilla.
13:26The legs go forward, the legs go back.
13:28A little bit of a swivel there at the top of the thigh
13:30goes a long way.
13:32There is certainly a bend down below in the knee.
13:34Nothing, though, in the boots.
13:36The boot is just a continued sculpt from the rest of the calf.
13:38The ankle moves up and down, rocks back and forth.
13:40No toe articulation,
13:42but the figure's never had toe articulation in the first place.
13:44Being that now we have
13:46three alternate head sculpts,
13:48even though, again, to be fair,
13:50the head sculpts are so close with one another.
13:52Even just to look at the original one, the defaulted one,
13:54and then to look at this one,
13:56probably the most obvious thing that you would notice right away
13:58is that the first seems a little bit smoother.
14:00So maybe he's more of a palace guard,
14:02maybe he's in the wild and starts to snare and capture
14:04all those escaped humans.
14:06But, again, I do like the idea that they gave us different head sculpts.
14:08I mean, the fur being the one big thing
14:10that makes these unique to one another.
14:12So it does mean, it does mean
14:14that if you happen to have the original gorilla soldier,
14:16you can change around the head sculpts.
14:18I mean, look at what I've just done right now.
14:20You can also even remove the bandolier
14:22to make them even different from one another.
14:24And, of course, let's bring in the other figures.
14:26Now we are getting already a new Dr. Zeus,
14:28which I would imagine is probably just going to be the same Dr. Zeus
14:30as we've gotten before.
14:32The one that kind of has me the most interested,
14:34we actually have two ones that I don't have in my collection right now.
14:36A General Ursus, which we will be getting as well,
14:38and a Zira.
14:40Looking forward to getting a Zira because I already had a Cornelius.
14:42And if you're going to have a Cornelius,
14:44you need to get a Zira with that as well.
14:46I did promise, though, I was going to show you guys
14:48how to install the backpack onto the body of the gorilla soldier.
14:50So let's go ahead and do that right now
14:52before we jump to the rotisserie.
14:54The thing that's very crucial, though,
14:56is when you add the backpack, though,
14:58on the back of the box of the gorilla soldier,
15:00show really when he has the backpack on,
15:02the bandolier isn't on there.
15:04So again, because this is a separate piece,
15:06you easily can just remove it.
15:08So let's go ahead and first just detach the head that we were currently using.
15:10I'm sure with this head, too,
15:12being that we started the review with the defaulted head,
15:14I'm going to probably end up using this one
15:16when we jump over to the turntable.
15:18So let's go ahead right now.
15:20We'll just remove the head from the gorilla soldier.
15:22A little harder, of course, to do.
15:24And we'll also go ahead and take off the bandolier
15:26You could try your best to really put the pack on there
15:28and then put the strap around,
15:30but with the bandolier really in the way,
15:32especially this pocket right here,
15:34this is really always going to be the thing
15:36that's going to end up popping off the strap.
15:38So you could either choose to put the backpack on now
15:40without the head sculpt,
15:42but it doesn't really change much matter anyway.
15:44So let's just pop the head back in place.
15:46I want to make sure, of course,
15:48we get it all the way on there.
15:50I probably could have easily heated this up a little bit with hot water,
15:52but unfortunately I didn't.
15:54It's like dressing a small toddler.
15:56We're going to bring, of course,
15:58the arm straps on there as well.
16:00We're just going to do our best
16:02to shimmy them up the arms like this
16:04and just bring the elbow in just a little bit.
16:06Just a little bit.
16:08The plastic, at least for the straps, is soft enough.
16:10Once you really get it over one arm,
16:12it's so much easier to get it around the other.
16:14Then attach it on the back of his body like that.
16:16Now again, if you had the bandolier still on there
16:18and you wanted to try to fight to get the strap on there,
16:20you're going to have a hard time
16:22getting this part right here attached.
16:24There's just too much extra bulk.
16:26Again, one thing that's neat about it too
16:28is being that the bandolier is a separate piece.
16:30You can have your guerrilla soldiers
16:32looking very different from one another.
16:34Let's just bring this around.
16:36With so much more now slack available here,
16:38it's a lot easier to plug it in place.
16:40Again, you've got your hole.
16:42You've got the peg on the other side.
16:44If I can get my blasted finger out of the way.
16:46We'll just attach the strap like this.
16:48Now, it's not to necessarily ensure
16:50that this is still going to stay in place.
16:52Every once in a while though,
16:54as you are rotating the figure around
16:56or even just touching the side,
16:58sometimes it ends up just popping this off in the process.
17:00You're probably going to have a lot easier of a time
17:02if you choose to leave the bandolier off.
17:04Which again, is one of the cool things
17:06that I like about the guerrilla soldiers
17:08is the fact that there's so much mix and match compatibility with it.
17:10Being that you already have,
17:12if you already have, for example,
17:14the original Planet of the Apes guerrilla soldier,
17:16you could keep the bandolier on the one
17:18and take it off on the other one here
17:20and then have this one with a backpack instead.
17:22Despite dusting off, when you think about it,
17:24an 11-year-old mold,
17:26I think the guerrilla soldier here from Planet of the Apes
17:28is just as good as some of the Ultimate figures
17:30that we're getting in the market now.
17:32It goes to show that if it wasn't really broken in the first place,
17:34why feel the need to fix it?
17:36I mean, it had still all the same levels of articulation
17:38that come with Ultimate figures now
17:40and the sculpt was still just as good back then.
17:42If anything, NECA's only beefed up the box
17:44with extra accessories.
17:46You had a single head before,
17:48and then a club, and then, of course, the rifle.
17:50Now they give you all those same accessories again
17:52with two additional brand-new head sculpts
17:54and a whole slew of new accessories.
17:56It means, though, that if you were lucky enough
17:58to get your hands on the original guerrilla soldier,
18:00you can easily then use the parts
18:02that come included with this figure
18:04because there's no real way at all
18:06that this guerrilla soldier is going to be able to hold
18:08all the accessories that he has anyways.
18:10The snare, for example, is one I'm going to display,
18:12I think, with the bandolier version of the guerrilla soldier
18:14with the bandolier on this guy
18:16to have the pack on the back of his body.
18:18This is going to be more like a grunt
18:20or a lesser-ranked guerrilla soldier
18:22I'm going to put on the shelf along with him.
18:24Even though I kind of made the mistake
18:26at the beginning of this review
18:28of trying to put the pack on the back of his body
18:30with the bandolier on the front,
18:32it really, though, benefits this figure
18:34to have the bandolier off altogether
18:36because then you're not going to have any issues
18:38at all with the waist strap attaching properly
18:40to the side of the pack's strap.
18:42I mean, with not having the bandolier,
18:44there's no real place to have the club,
18:46but technically he does also have another hand
18:48so he could always really hold the club
18:50in his other hand.
18:52The one only other thing I would have liked
18:54to see this figure get released with,
18:56speaking of hands, is another gripping hand.
18:58He has wide-gripped hands when you get him out of the box,
19:00he only has really one smaller-gripped hand
19:02for holding the baton and the snare.
19:04Had he only just come with one being a mere flip of that
19:06so he could have actually had gripping hands
19:08on both the sides of the figure's body.
19:10Still, though, I'd like to thank the folks over at NECA
19:12that provided the sample of the brand new
19:14Planet of the Apes Gorilla Soldier
19:16that we had the chance to have a look at in this review.
19:18Being a big fan of Planet of the Apes,
19:20especially the OGs, the classic ones,
19:22where everybody was still wearing a mask,
19:24you could barely hear what they were saying,
19:26I am super thrilled the fact that we're going back
19:28to the franchise again.
19:30Not only are we getting here the ultimate gorilla soldier,
19:32but they have also already announced
19:34that we're going to be getting a Dr. Zeus,
19:36a Zira, and a General Ursus,
19:38What do you guys think of this figure?
19:40Let me know down below in the comments section.
19:42Did you guys already have the chance to pick up the first wave
