00:00You don't mind if my movie slip into something a little bit more comfortable
00:03do you? Here's a look at some custom VHS inspired slip cases from the Horror Fiend.
00:13And the box just arrived. I've already to be fair opened up the box and kind of
00:18looked at the contents inside but we're gonna I'm gonna show you guys some
00:21custom VHS inspired slip cases that you can use for your blu-rays and your 4k's.
00:25The Horror Fiend you can actually follow them over on Instagram and they have a
00:29whole selection of custom VHS slipcovers. What do I mean by slipcovers?
00:35Well the movies for example I just happen to have one of them right here
00:38because I already know the slipcovers I'm getting here. This is the original
00:41well this is the original Shining presented in 4k and blu-ray. One thing
00:45unfortunately though is missing with my release of Shining because I ordered it
00:48over on Amazon. Amazon's really bad by the way can I just say for not always
00:52having slip cases arrive with their movies. Sure enough though I don't have a
00:55slip case for this but the Horror Fiend does. So instead of getting a slip case
00:59that would have all the details on the back what they've done meticulously
01:02carefully recreated from scratch they've recreated the VHS covers and they've
01:08made them into slipcovers and you'll see what I mean as we actually go inside the
01:12care the box. Now everything is carefully packed as you can probably see for
01:16yourself all the slip cases that I have ordered here and they actually have
01:19pre-orders for these so if again if you want to reach out to Horror Fiend they
01:23have a long list of slipcovers that they have available but just though the pull
01:26out the Shining I want to show you guys what this looks like. So instead of
01:31actually just simply translating over the original VHS cover using the same
01:35font and everything else very meticulously though and CouchArt does
01:39all the design work for these. They go in and they find a matching font and they
01:43actually do these layer and layer and they go in and recreate the covers so
01:47these aren't just initial scans of the VHS of copies of VHS boxes and they just
01:52recreate in the covers that way. They actually have gone in there and
01:55recreated of course the cover they recreate the font and everything else
01:57and so to the point of we're looking at this this is an artist's work this isn't
02:02just again a reproduction. Now they've actually done a couple of several
02:05versions of the Shining the one that kind of caught my fancy the most was
02:08this yellow cover. The thing I also want to really bring to your attention to if
02:12you are if you have ever delved into the idea of buying custom slipcovers from
02:16even like Etsy stores the problem with them sometimes is that when you do have
02:20them arrive they feel like they're very thin like photo paper. These aren't photo
02:24paper at all I can assure you these have been come from a printing press and you
02:29can see though like the card of these is just as I mean if to look at this I
02:32would imagine that this would have come from a factory. So this is actually gonna
02:36be for the Shining. I'm just gonna slide this over top of the case like this. I
02:39want to make sure of course I don't fray the plastic you know I'm able to do it
02:42from the top here slide it in place and now I've got myself the Shining. Not
02:47again like the way it's supposed to look from a 4k so it's not gonna have any of
02:50the details on the back but what it does have though is again all the readup that
02:52you would find on a VHS tape. Pretty pretty cool. They also have done ones in
02:58different sizes too so they've accommodated sizes for like the Aero
03:01videos like where the videos are the larger cases for example. They do
03:05obviously the standard size blu-ray cases and the 4k cases which are
03:09generally like this size but again like that looks really cool. This was the way
03:13again my favorite but they had like three or four different versions of the
03:16Shining. This one the one that's the one that caught my attention the most. Let's
03:19see what else we have also in here as well. Let's pull out the next one so
03:24we've got Leatherface the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Now again I want to show you
03:28guys the quality of this. It's not super glossy it's got like a semi-gloss finish
03:32to it. You know again like sometimes when again you buy these things from the Etsy
03:35stores they're they're too shiny at times. I know I've picked up a couple of
03:39them in the past but like we've got Leatherface the Texas Chainsaw Massacre
03:423. Let's just grab though the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I've already got like
03:45the stack of movies here for all the ones I've ordered. So here's the
03:49Leatherface that I've already gotten. Again unfortunately when I ordered this
03:52it didn't have the slip at all for it but while it will have still all the
03:56features on the back of it this one does recreate the original back covering for
04:00the VHS cover. Again they found the fonts they went in there and in some of the
04:04cases like I was reading up on this for the Halloween 4 and Halloween 5 they
04:08actually found it and used about five different reference points so they could
04:12get the exact same art that they wanted to use. So they used like a different
04:14image of Michael Myers from one box art for example and they use the different
04:18fonts. It's just layering and layering until they perfect the process and
04:21certainly they they have. So of course we got Leatherface there he puts the teeth
04:25in tear. Again a nice thick cardstock. Really nice job. Very invisible seam
04:31lines either too like I'm looking at this clearly there's the seam line right
04:34there but the adhesive that they're using is very strong like I've had a
04:37couple in the past where the the actual spine starts to fray away from itself
04:42but the quality on these is amazing. So again I'm just gonna put this over
04:46Leatherface. Now I have some of these slipcovers where I've already got the
04:51movie with the slipcover but I haven't really been honestly happy with the ones
04:55I already had so I wanted to kind of get the upgrades. A really nice retro arc
04:59upgrade slipcase for this. So there's a Leatherface right there. They also do as
05:04well paper inserts too so not only are they doing the outer slipcovers but if
05:08you like a VHS inspired and you'll kind of really see how retro some of these go
05:12if you like the retro inserts they also can provide those as well. So there's
05:16Leatherface. You can reach out also to them in Instagram so of course I'll
05:21provide all the necessary details down below in the video description. You can
05:25let them know. Again they have a very long list of movies that they've already
05:28done and they certainly are open to projects as well. We've got also Halloween
05:325. Now again like they would have gone and they would have matched the font they
05:36would have all typed this from scratch. None of this is a reproduction in the
05:39sense that they've scanned the original VHS case and just repurposed it for the
05:44slipcover. This is all done meticulously by hand. I actually even remember the VHS
05:50cover because I had the original like Halloween 5 well all the movies on VHS.
05:53So again like you can see the clarity of the print looks really good. Of course
05:58there's the there's Donald Shanks, Michael Myers there on the top, Loomis
06:01hanging over. All right really really nice really nice. So the reason why I
06:05actually wanted to get this one is that I picked up the Scream Factory Halloween
06:095 The Revenge of Michael Myers. I don't personally first of all like the
06:13artwork that they've used. They're also using a harder case there too. I don't
06:17really like that like the artwork that they use for a lot of these 4k releases
06:20so I'm just gonna pull that out. So here's the original source material. You
06:24can see again like they would have just remade all of this. So even like the
06:27look of Michael Myers it's not the exact same image and we'll just slide that
06:32over top. This one is definitely one that's gonna look a lot nicer on my
06:35shelf and you can see see how it says Halloween 5. Really nice really nice job
06:39on these. They also do as well box sets. Now they don't I think from what I know
06:44they haven't done all the box sets. They've got one I think for Robocop.
06:47They've got one for American Werewolf in London. Again again I would certainly
06:51recommend reaching out to them if you guys are interested. What I did want to
06:54show you guys though I'm just gonna move everything out of the way here was the
06:57one for Pet Sematary and you could probably even see where's the Pet
07:00Cemetery. Ah this one right here. I want to show you the Pet Cemetery one because
07:05first of all I already had the original VHS tape of this when I was growing up.
07:07This is what I had right now for Pet Cemetery. I mean I don't really love the
07:12cover at all. I think it's a little uninteresting to be to be perfectly
07:14honest with you but again like this has the original for the most part the
07:18original artwork as the inspirational cues for this. Of course got Stephen
07:22King's Pet Cemetery along the top there as well. A very familiar looking spine. I
07:26had all of this when I was growing up so like probably in like high school or so
07:30when I was when I was collecting VHS tapes the first time around. And again
07:36you can see there's like there's the read up down below as well. For somebody
07:41that just loves retro looks for somebody that first of all likes to recreate
07:44video stores in their basements and want to have everything kind of look the way
07:47that they looked when back in the day these VHS tapes first existed. What
07:51they're doing there over with the Horror Fiend is really fantastic work. Again you
07:55got some nice thick card for these. Nothing feels flimsy. It feels like
07:58getting this from a direct factory that made the movies themselves. We'll go
08:03ahead and just slide that over Pet Cemetery. Like I said they're not buying
08:08at all cheap scans. They're full recreation slipcovers. Everything is
08:11fully rebuilt from the ground up. Even the fonts that they're retyping to match
08:15the originals that they used on the VHS. So everything is done by hand. Another
08:20one I did also want to bring out to you guys here is Poltergeist. Now Poltergeist
08:24here one of the things I always I remembered the most from the Poltergeist
08:27VHS was the banner down below here. Of course you got Steven Spielberg
08:31production. The two-tone effect there of the blue and the yellow there as well.
08:34Stereo and of course you got MGM UA at the top there. A very classic looking VHS
08:40spine to it as well. Now here's the one I got from the 4k Poltergeist. I don't
08:47first of all like it. I don't really I've never really liked shiny covers like
08:50this and I don't think it it doesn't give me anything at all to the movie. I
08:53mean other than just Greg T Nielsen. I don't even think that's actually the
08:56character at all. I think they just used an actor. Maybe it's a
08:59different actor but I don't like this at all. I'm just not a fan of the
09:03shinier and again like while it doesn't have the features on the back it
09:05certainly does have though the read-ups that would have been on the original VHS
09:09covers. So again we're just gonna now replace this and I'm gonna replace a
09:14couple of these. What I've already obviously gonna be showing
09:18guys in this video I've already got plans to reach out to them again and
09:21ask them for a couple more as well. I mean that looks that looks fantastic.
09:24There's Poltergeist. Just classic nostalgia in hand here. Another one I did
09:31also want to show you guys as well is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Scream
09:34Factory went through a phase where they were I don't know in my personal
09:37opinion they were really releasing a lot of ugly art. I think the initial slip
09:41cover though for Texas Chainsaw Massacre the next generation which is a personal
09:44favorite of mine had Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger and they just sort
09:47of omitted this left behind just drag leather face. I mean it's an okay slip
09:51cover. I don't love it though. I certainly don't love it. What I do love
09:55though is just to pull out the one that we've got inside here. Yeah we got the
09:59Texas Chainsaw Massacre the next generation. So it's actually got a
10:03double flip to cover. It's got of course the lipstick there on the front and of
10:07course you got the spine on the side and then on the back or I guess that could
10:11technically be as well the front. We've got Texas Chainsaw Massacre the next
10:13generation. A giddy mix of gruesome horror and campy horror. Renee Zellweger
10:19and Matthew McConaughey on top. If looks could kill he wouldn't need a chainsaw.
10:24So let's go ahead and do away with this ugly cover. I'm not necessarily gonna be
10:28throwing these away but I'm probably gonna be storing these away for the much
10:31more superior looking retro covers. Yeah that's gonna look and actually just to
10:36show you guys what so this would have been probably would have taken the
10:39initial art and then recreated everything by hand with the font
10:43matching everything to the original VHS cover. So again we'll slide that over top.
10:48That's gonna go perfectly. Where's the Leatherface I had already looked at?
10:52Leatherface is right over here. I should have kind of grouped them together. Just
10:55imagine like how much nicer that looks on the shelf than that some of the
10:58uglier Scream Factory releases we've gotten. Another one that I also grabbed
11:02as well was Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2. Now again like it's sort of again
11:08during that phase during that period of time where we've got the Scream Factory
11:11releases the Silent Night Deadly Night Part 1 also had Billy Chapman here in the
11:15front of Silent Night Deadly Night 2. Ricky Caldwell featured on the front. I
11:19just I don't think it's it's an uninspiring cover. I don't think there's
11:24anything creative really about the way they've done the art. I always really
11:27thought the original poster art for Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 was a
11:30lot better. We of course got the the Christmas ball hanging down. I always
11:35think it was really interesting though too that he's pointing the
11:38gun and you think that that's the person that's breaking into the house when then
11:41you realize though Santa's waiting in the ways in the background there of the
11:44window. So again like there's the front there's the back. Nice again thick card
11:50stock for all of these. Let's slide this out. If you guys are also interested and

12:01because they always are dropping pre-orders. You can reach out to them in
12:05advance as well and I think they do like printing every like once or twice a
12:09month or so. So you can always really reach out to them ask them again. I think
12:14they take the pre-orders once a month because of course takes a
12:17little bit of time for them to take it from the printing press. So there's the
12:20Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2. A superior cover if you ask me versus the original one.
12:26The last couple of ones we're also going to look at here as well. I didn't want to
12:30get one that was a little bit more current so I've got myself the Ghost
12:34Busters Frozen Empire and actually this is a good example too. The Frozen Empire
12:38from Ghostbusters the second follow-up sequel 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray never got
12:44the slipcover for this. Of course you got your both movies inside Blu-ray and 4k
12:48but what it was really unfortunately sorely lacking was a really superior
12:51looking slipcover. Now if you have collected the original beta now this was
12:55my first time being introduced the Ghostbusters was beta time but if you
12:59also had collected the VHS cover. One thing to note though about the VHS
13:04cover of the Ghostbusters was it was known for having this outlined red
13:08border. Now you can see that they've recreated that as well for the
13:11Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. You've got now the panel lining the border outline
13:15here of red as well as Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. They've done Ghostbusters
13:19they've done Ghostbusters 2 and I think they have as well they've done
13:21Ghostbusters Afterlife. So if you'd like to have them seamless and all on the
13:25shelf looking the same again you may want to reach out to them over on
13:28Instagram. So again like a very similar looking I mean again they've recreated a
13:33lot of this. This is again just a full straight scan to scan scan to production
13:37they have gone and meticulously gone in there and recreated the font and
13:41everything else for these. So let's go ahead and slide that over Ghostbusters
13:44Frozen Empire. Oh that's looking nice and see how good that actually looks in hand
13:51because of course when you see images online you really always kind of want to
13:55see in hand what these things look like or even reviews like this can also help
13:57as well. Yeah I think I could see myself getting the other Ghostbusters
14:02slipcases so that again they all look the same. Even though again like the
14:05poster is current the look and feel to this just definitely screams retro to me.
14:11So there's the font down below there as well like down to the fact that they
14:14have RCA Columbia Pictures home video approximately 120 minutes just really
14:21nice really really nice. The last one that will also have a look at here as
14:24well is my Christmas Evil. Now Christmas Evil I will say right away love the
14:29movie I hate really what's what vinegar syndrome did actually to Christmas Evil
14:33for I mean that looks nothing at all like Harry. He looks more like the Grinch
14:37dressed up as Santa. There's the front there's the back I never got a slipcase
14:41to this but they do actually have a reproduction of the one from the VHS
14:45release so of course you got Santa there featured on the front. This Christmas
14:49you better believe in Santa or he'll slay you the night he dropped in
14:52Christmas Evil. There's what it looks like on the side spine same colors
14:57matching to the original VHS box of this as well and that's what it looks like on
15:00also on the back. So let's go ahead and slide this over top and again like I can
15:06only hope the videos like this do true justice for how good these things
15:10actually look in hand. If you guys again are interested in pricing to know how
15:14much these things are there again they do them for different sizes too. I'm only
15:18really for this video showing guys what they look like with standard blu-rays
15:21and standard 4ks but they also do ones for the arrow videos because of course
15:25those are gonna be a little bit wider. They have done a couple of
15:28box sets like RoboCop and American Werewolf in London which I think I
15:31actually would like to get the American Werewolf in London but yeah there's
15:34Christmas Evil looking just as good as it does from the original VHS cover. Now
15:38I wish I still had the original VHS of Christmas Evil because I can then put
15:42them side to side and see again to show you guys how good
15:46these look side to side. In the end though I'm really happy that I first of
15:50all got a hold of Horror Fiend and the fact that I was able to order some of
15:54these slipcovers. They're definitely gonna be looking a lot nicer on the
15:57shelf and especially like some of the instances like the Poltergeist. I just
16:01thought was an ugly version of Poltergeist for the slipcover. This looks
16:04considerably better, considerably better and for me that was one that I mean for
16:09my first introduction to horror was collecting like VHS tapes. This brings me
16:13back to a day that things were so much simpler. You could go to strip plaza video
16:16stores and rent your movies. I mean this is kind of just bringing me back to my I
16:19don't say my childhood but certainly bring me back to when I was first
16:23introduced to horror. If again you guys are interested and would like to reach
