00:00Looking at Joe Gomez specifically, we've looked at a few Liverpool players across our talks with the likes of Darwin Nunes, Diogo Jota as well.
00:12These sort of players who have had good spells and really captured the liking of the fans at times, but you just feel like maybe they could have gone on to more and maybe they could have achieved a little bit more in their time.
00:25Joe Gomez specifically, let's just start with looking at his future at the club. Obviously, he's been marred by a lot of injuries in his time. What do you make of his time at the club?
00:37Well, he's currently Liverpool's longest-serving first-team member, which is an absolute credit to him. He arrived from Charlton Athletic. Maybe Liverpool didn't think he would have the career that he has had because sometimes it's a gamble when you go and sign these sorts of players.
00:54Fair play to Gomez. He's come and established himself as a regular member of the squad. He was Pedro van Dijk's regular parter in that Premier League title-winning season. Obviously, he had the serious injury after that and since then it's been difficult for him in terms of minutes.
01:14He's always been a highly valued asset at the club. There's always been interest, but Liverpool have battered that away because they know that he's a very capable centre-half and he can cover all four positions across the back line.
01:31Last season, it was somewhat of a renaissance for him because he didn't play a lot in his favourous position centrally, but he played a lot at right-back and then he had to cover at left-back when Andy Robertson cost a similar cast for out-injuries and ended up winning himself a spot in the England squad for the Euros.
01:49Looking at this season and thinking, right, can he kick on again? But he had to wait for his opportunity to come back from the Euros and then Canarty thrust himself in with van Dijk. When Canarty was injured, Gomez was doing really well and he picked up the hamstring injury. He recovers recurrently and he might need surgery now and it looks like he's out for a prolonged period.
02:14If he comes back in the summer, where does he rank in Liverpool's pecking order? Because Gerard Kwanzaa is only going to get better. He was excellent when he came off the bench against Wolves at half-time. He looks like he's got over his early season issues. He became a Canarty, he's still only 25. Granted, he has a year left on his deal, but hopefully that will come to a conclusion.
02:37Does Joe Gomez realistically want to be fourth-choice centre-back? He's, what, now 27-ish, 28? There were talks about him maybe going to Newcastle last summer. I dare say there will be a lot of suitors if he's available on the market.
02:58Liverpool might look at him and think, can we get someone in for a similar price who's younger, who we can develop? We see it as a really pivotal path for our squad going forward. Did he shake Joe Gomez's hand and say, look, you're a fantastic servant, go and play regular football elsewhere and we hope it goes well for you?
03:19It might be a decision for Arnold Slot to make in the summer, but as things stand, he's under contract and Liverpool won't be selling him cheap, if they want to sell him at all, because he's a capable player and can cover a lot of positions.
