00:00The BJP-led government in India has decided to commemorate the emergency anniversary every
00:09year on the 25th of June.
00:12This is by commemorating what they are calling Samvedan Hathya Diwas or Murder of the Constitution
00:17Day.
00:18They've also announced a campaign to make people more aware about the Indian Constitution
00:23culminating in the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's inception in January next year.
00:29Now why is it suddenly that there is so much political focus on the Indian Constitution?
00:35That has to do with the fact that in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, one of the
00:39key reasons being seen for the BJP's below par performance was the fact that the opposition
00:44was able to successfully convince people that a brute majority for the BJP would lead to
00:49changes in the constitution, specifically the end of reservations for backward castes.
00:55And this is a message that seems to have travelled far and wide right down to the grassroots
00:59and may partly explain why the BJP didn't do so well.
01:04And now with crucial state elections coming up in October, including in Maharashtra, Jharkhand
01:08and Haryana, the BJP is desperately keen to recover lost ground.
01:13The fact that they've also done very poorly in recently held assembly by-elections in
01:18which they just won two out of 13 seats and the opposition won 10 is another warning sign
01:23for the BJP.
01:25And now they seek to turn the tables and remind the country that it was Indira Gandhi as Prime
01:29Minister who formally imposed an emergency back in 1975 on the 25th of June.
01:36Of course, it is the 21st century and you would think that issues that concern people
01:40today like jobs, exam paper leaks, these would be front and centre.
01:44But the BJP wants to reclaim the narrative on this important issue.
01:50Let's see how it goes.
