00:00In Venezuela, citizens go to the polls on the first national public consultation of
00:142025, a democratic process that threatens communal power.
00:22In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the imposition of tariffs after describing
00:27President Trump's decision as a betrayal.
00:34And in Palestine, the Israeli army killed at least 25 Palestinians during operations
00:38against the West Bank in the last 13 days.
00:47Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrero from the Telesur headquarters
00:50in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:52Now we will begin with the news, stay with us.
01:07In Venezuela, the first national public consultation of 2025 is underway.
01:12Venezuelans go to the polls to choose the project that their communities need.
01:17The Minister of Communes, Ángel Prado, informed that there are more than 36,000 projects nominated
01:23for this Sunday voting, where more than 5,000 will be elected.
01:27The remaining projects will also have the opportunity to be developed.
01:31Also, the proposals were discussed by the communities themselves in open assemblies.
01:38More than 1,100 parishes in the Bolivarian nation go to the 5,245 electoral centers to
01:49cast their votes on this community's driving initiative.
01:59And as we are saying this Sunday, Venezuelans vote in the first national public consultation
02:03of 2025 to choose the projects to be financed through the state's public budget, effectively
02:10going more voice to the people's power.
02:13Our correspondent Melen De Los Santos with more on this.
02:16Hello, Melen, how are you?
02:18Can you give us the remarks at this hour?
02:21Hello, Ana, how are you?
02:26It's great to talk to you.
02:27And we are here in Caracas, as you were just saying, actually in the Ana Karina Rote commune
02:33in the San Juan parish here in southwestern Caracas.
02:38Here is where we are.
02:39And what you are seeing right behind me, that is not just a lot of citizens coming to vote
02:45and participate in this public consultation.
02:49This is actually the government in exercise today.
02:53These people coming here to choose on these projects are a form of the government.
02:57That is what we were just talking about with the neighbors here at this parish, also with
03:02the leaders of this commune, the spokespersons, you know that the commune have different spokespersons
03:08related to each topic.
03:10And what they were telling us, what they were transmitting is this idea that the mandate
03:18to really, for the people to take charge of this government, to exercise their mandate
03:24to decide on what they need for their territories is happening today, has been happening in
03:31the past consultations.
03:32And this one that is the first one this year, and that is the third one so far since last
03:37year has had a great turnout.
03:40We were just talking also, you could see behind me, there's a long line waiting, people that
03:45keep on coming.
03:47Let's recall that it's 4.30 p.m. in Caracas at this moment.
03:51We've been here since 8 a.m. touring different neighborhoods.
03:56And every time we arrive at one of these communes or communal circuits, it's the same
04:01image.
04:02We have at least one block of people waiting to exercise their vote.
04:07The people keep on coming, the lines keep on forming, even there are people that are
04:11going back to their homes to come back later because the centers are already full.
04:17And that is a really good sign that the people really understand that this is a moment of
04:22participation, and this is a moment for them to decide on their territories.
04:28And it's a good sign.
04:29That's what the leaders of these communes, the members of the communes were saying.
04:34It's a good sign that they are trusting this process of change.
04:39Thank you very much, Valen, for your remarks and information.
04:43Hope to have you in our next news brief.
04:48And now we'll continue, because also in this context, Telesur tour communes and communal
04:55circuits throughout Venezuela to evaluate how the national public consultations have
05:00impacted the organizations of neighborhoods of the territory.
05:05Let's see.
05:08In Quebrada de Cuba, located within the Valles del Duy region in the Miranda state of Venezuela,
05:14is the Ñaplacida rural commune, described by its inhabitants as the spearhead of popular
05:20organization in the region, as its residents have been working for years on collective
05:25solutions to improve the community's daily life.
05:29Like this, they arrived to the first public consultation of 2025 with the enthusiasm to
05:35continue promoting their strategic projects.
05:40We arrive here, as with all our previous consultations, with a lot of optimism, of hope, and above
05:46all, with a lot of determination to win in order to satisfy specific needs.
05:51One of the main issues faced in the area was the water supply.
05:55The implementation of the project resulted from the first public consultation of 2024
06:00has not only provided an efficient solution to this problem, but has also strengthened
06:05the unity of the community's neighbors.
06:09The self-management and self-government methods are so important to improve the quality of
06:13life of our inhabitants.
06:15The Ñaplacida commune had already been without potable water supply through pipes for many
06:20years, and we even managed to make three extra houses to benefit from this project.
06:29The elderly, children, women, men, all participated.
06:33What impacted me as coordinator the most, as well as my fellow community members, was
06:38the union, because this had not been achieved in any of the 30 communities of Cabrada de
06:43Cua that an entire community went out to execute a project.
06:47Ñaplacida, when a conflict is approached creatively, it can even become a benefit for
06:54the community.
06:55This is the idea behind another of the emblematic projects of this commune, which has found
07:00in recycling not only a way to eliminate garbage dumps, but also an engine for change in the
07:06future.
07:10We must make people see, from the youngest to the oldest, that garbage is not a problem,
07:16garbage is a means of production.
07:18Nowadays we are much more prepared in terms of waste sorting, which is the most important
07:23thing in recycling, and the benefits that each recycled product brings.
07:30Emily and I are the ones who drive the garbage trucks on the pickup route every day.
07:35It's not an easy feat, but it has been achieved here.
07:41From the provision of basic services to the promotion of culture as a means of transformation.
07:46Through collective action, the commune members of Cabrada de Cua have found a way to build
07:51effective responses on a daily basis, convinced that they are on the right path.
07:59Everything we propose here in the commune is being achieved, and it will go on like
08:03that, because we will not stop pursuing that goal.
08:07And this is the way, hand in hand with the people's power.
08:20In Brazil, Hugo Mota was elected president of the House of Representatives, while David
08:25Alcolumbre was elected president of the Senate.
08:29David Hugo Mota, supported by Workers' Party, the Liberal Party and 16 other parties, was
08:34elected president of the Chamber of Deputies with a vote of 444 parliamentarians, the second
08:40highest vote in history.
08:42Similarly, David Alcolumbre will assume the Senate for the second time, obtaining 73 of
08:49the 81 votes, also backed by an ARC of balances, ranging from the Workers' Party to the Liberal Party.
08:58The main guidelines of the political left in Congress include regulating social networks,
09:04reaching tariffs and reducing working days.
09:12Young people from all over Brazil gathered and received this week for the biannual Congress
09:18of the National Students' Union.
09:20Our correspondent Brian Mears has the details.
09:22Thousands of students traveled in bus convoys from across Brazil to Recife this week for
09:32the biannual Congress of the National University Students' Union, or UNI.
09:38After a series of debates on the political conjecture and cultural exchange activities,
09:43they held an assembly where they voted on their priorities for the next two years.
09:48In addition to school reforms, they agreed to fight for a tax on large fortunes and an
09:53end to the six-day work week.
10:00This year is important for social mobilization.
10:03The social movements have a task to do and the National Students' Union is rising to
10:08the challenge, which is to block the right-wing extremist agenda that punishes the working
10:13class and the Brazilian people.
10:18Founded in 1937, the UNI is one of Brazil's largest and oldest social movements.
10:25Historically connected to the Communist Party, it was a key player in the fight against Brazil's
10:29military dictatorship.
10:31During the Bolsonaro administration, UNI mobilized over a million people to the streets on two
10:36occasions, triggering the resignation of four education ministers and blocking the government
10:42from charging tuition in public universities.
10:45Students from across Brazil came here and spent five days discussing the future of our
10:51nation.
10:53We spoke about ideas for new public policies, including how to reform our universities so
10:58we could decide what steps we need to take to create a country that is better and fairer.
11:03The story of the National Students' Union is intertwined with the story of Brazil.
11:07Our struggle continues to defeat the far right and move forward so the people can have the
11:12dignity of the quality education needed to defend Brazil.
11:17The size and success of the event shows that 88 years after its founding, Latin America's
11:23largest student movement remains an influential force in Brazilian politics.

16:13Israeli occupation forces bombed numerous buildings at the Iranian refugee camp in the
16:18occupied West Bank in the latest hour.
16:21Palestinian authorities announced that the Israeli army simultaneously blew up some 20
16:26buildings in the eastern side of the camp after placing explosives in them.
16:31For the morning, they briefed that more than 25 Palestinians have been hit to death in
16:37these attacks in addition to the countless injuries and arrests.
16:41Concurrently, Tel Aviv regime troops shot down a young Palestinian in another refugee
16:47camp of Hebron.
16:49All these aggressions are being mounted despite a ceasefire agreement reached with the Hamas
16:54Palestinian Resistance Movement.
17:02The Israeli army killed in 13 days at least 25 Palestinians during operations against
17:08the West Bank.
17:09Health authorities reported that the military shot at a 73-year-old Palestinian in Yenin
17:15whose body was taken to hospital by Red Crescent ambulances.
17:19They also report occupation forces continue to reform control of the region by sending
17:24soldiers on armored vehicles.
17:26At the same time, Israeli forces scale the demolition of structures in several areas
17:33of the refugee camp.
17:34Likewise, the Israeli defense in Gaza warned of humanitarian crisis that thousands of Palestinians
17:45are living in the Gaza Strip as a consequence of the Israeli aggressions.
17:49The NDD ensured that freezing temperatures in winter pose a danger to citizens who are
17:55also facing a crisis of food, medical assistance, and basic services.
18:00Meanwhile, the United Nations' Mine Action Services learned that hundreds of Palestinians
18:06are at risk due to the number of unexplored explosive-borne under-buildings and rubble.
18:19Russia denounces as a war crime the attack perpetrated Saturday by the Ukrainian forces
18:25against a borderline school in the Russian city of Sushet.
18:30According to the Russian investigative committee, the legal order was given by the Ukrainian
18:34colonel Rostislav Karpush, commander of the 19th Missile Brigade.
18:39The investigation showed the colonel ordered to shield the civilian building with missiles.
18:45The committee launched a criminal legal process to find the officer and all others involved
18:51in the attack, which left several dead and wounded.
18:55The Defense Ministry assured that these aggressions once again exposed the terrorist and inhuman
19:01nature of the Ukrainian leadership.
19:08In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, hospitals in Goma are struggling to cope following fears
19:14of fighting with M23 rebels, which has seen hundreds of people killed.
19:18At Keshichero Hospital, beds are full of patients with traumatic injuries.
19:24Though the M23 consolidated their control of Goma over the last week, the rebels continue
19:30advancing into neighboring South Kivu province and Werda, approaching its capital, Bukavuco.
19:37Goma has long served as a hub for humanitarian aid in this troubled region, and millions
19:44are at risk with humanitarian operations being brought to a standstill due to the fighting.
19:50M23 is also supporting more than 100 armed groups vying for control in Congo's mineral-rich
19:58east, and are currently supported by around 44,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda.
20:15And now, changing topics, Kenyan musician Makinle Mutsembe has been playing his trumpet
20:22for 24 hours straight at the Geoku Cafe in Nairobi, in an attempt to set a Guinness World
20:29Record for the longest continued trumpet perform.
20:31Let's see.
20:34Yes, he'll do it.
20:35You know, we have a good pedigree.
20:38We are marathon runners, so this is the first time we are seeing a musician
20:43try to achieve the same thing our marathon runners achieve all over the world.
20:49It's beautiful.
20:50But he just clocked 21 hours, so it's exciting to see if he's going to beat the remainder
20:54three hours.
20:55I feel like if he beats it, that's going to be amazing.
20:58That's amazing.
20:59Blowing a trumpet for 24 hours straight is amazing, if you ask me.
