00:342025.
00:35And the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East reported Wednesday
00:43that the repeated Israeli incursions in northern West Bank have caused the displacement of
00:48at least 2,000 families in Yenin.
00:55Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:00We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:16In the United States, a 17-year-old man killed himself after fatally wounding a female student
01:23in a shooting at a Nashville school on Wednesday.
01:26The shooting took place at Nashville's Antioch High School, where two other students were
01:32reportedly injured and are being treated in a city hospital.
01:36Authorities said that the situation is under control and have warrantied there are no further
01:41threats that put students or citizens at risk.
01:44Meanwhile, the White House expressed its condolences to the victims' families and informed that
01:50President Donald Trump was closely following the whole incident.
01:54The school, with about 2,000 students, is about 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville.
02:00The cause of the shooting is still under investigation.
02:07The President of the United States, Donald Trump, approved on Tuesday the investment
02:11of at least $500 billion for a project in artificial intelligence called Stargate.
02:17So far, it is the most expensive project in the history of humanity.
02:22Stargate is a project that consists of the creation of a mega artificial intelligence
02:27computer which will have thousands of data centers stored globally.
02:32The project, which aims to position the United States as a world leader in artificial intelligence,
02:37will be built in the state of Texas and will be led by companies such as Microsoft, NVIDIA
02:42and OpenAI.
02:44In this sense, the US President assured that this investment will generate close to 100,000
02:49jobs and will have, according to Trump, economic benefits for humanity.
03:15in the United States and very quickly, moving very rapidly, creating over 100,000 American
03:23jobs almost immediately.
03:25This monumental undertaking is a resounding declaration of confidence in America's potential
03:31under a new president.
03:34Let me be—a new president.
03:36I didn't say it.
03:37They did.
03:38A new president.
03:53In the United States, two new wildfires are reported in the state of California as strong
03:58winds elevate critical conditions across the southern region.
04:02A blaze erupted in Los Angeles County's Catech area on Wednesday, affecting over 5,000 acres
04:09and forcing evacuations.
04:11Another fire broke out near Rancho Bernardo in San Diego County, growing to at least seven
04:16acres and leaving at least one person injured.
04:19According to the National Weather Service, red flag warnings were in effect until Thursday
04:24for parts of Los Angeles, Ventura and San Diego counties because of low humidity and
04:29unexpected uptick in Santa Ana winds.
04:33In this context, it is worth highlighting that firefighters increased containment of
04:38the Palisades and Eaton fires that killed at least 28 people and destroyed more than
04:4315,000 structures.
04:49However, an unprecedented snowstorm has been reported in the southern part of the United
04:54States with the Lake Charles National Weather Service in the state of Louisiana warning
04:59about the first snowfalls.
05:01According to specialists, these weather events are the result of global warming and will
05:06be happening more frequently.
05:11Meanwhile in Sarajevo, a layer of smog covered the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina for
05:18the second day in a row during the winter months.
05:21This is the time of the year when cities are polluted the most since the countries of that
05:25region render heating with coal and wood.
05:29In this sense, experts warned of the numerous health risks of this situation as the air
05:34quality index in the territory is very unhealthy and ranks Sarajevo as the second most polluted
05:39city in the world.
05:44According to estimates by international organizations, the World Bank and the European Environment
05:49Agency, between 3,000 and 5,000 inhabitants of Bosnia-Herzegovina die every year from
05:55diseases caused by polluted air.
05:57In other words, every five or six deaths here are caused by polluted air.
06:02In Sarajevo, one in 12 deaths is caused by lung cancer.
06:09It's very hard to breathe and to live in Sarajevo during these smog episodes, so we take every
06:14opportunity to go to the mountains.
06:19As I'm retired, I can afford to go to the mountains almost every day.
06:25Especially at weekends, we walk in the mountains to avoid the pollution.
06:33And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
06:37Telesur English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:41We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:55Welcome back to From the South.
07:13The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, led the military march together with high
07:17command at the opening of the first popular military and police exercise named Bolivarian
07:22Shield 2025.
07:24The Venezuelan president informed that this Wednesday the Integral Defense Board became
07:28active in all the states, municipalities, parishes and communes of the country.
07:33The head of state declared that Venezuela has had ample success in combating and defeating
07:38criminal groups, besides offering other nations the experience that the national security
07:43entities acquired during their operations.
07:46In this sense, Maduro announced that the drills would be carried out through Wednesday and
07:52Thursday on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the 2015 Bolivarian Shield exercises.
08:01We are activating at this hour the national integral defense bodies in this command post
08:09in this hill of Caracas of Fort Tiuna, the ODI, which are the bodies for the integral
08:19defense of all the states, the organs of integral defense, the ODI, which we activated in January,
08:33the state ODIs, the municipal ODI, the parochial ODI, and through the development of the exercise
08:41we must reach the communal ODI, the territory.
08:48It is the most complete exercise from the point of view of its planning and it must
08:52be the most complete and perfect exercise from the point of view of the defense of the territory.
09:02I say and I repeat, if you want peace, get ready to defend it.
09:08Also in this context, the Venezuelan president ratified that former Colombian President Alvaro
09:14Aníbal Duque are public enemies of the National Armed Forces and of the people of Venezuela.
09:23Venezuela has had ample success in combating, defeating and dismembering at the root
09:31the criminal groups that generate violence as a priority.
09:38Today we can say that, with some exceptions in some places,
09:44these groups have been totally defeated and crushed.
09:48If any country wants the experience of Venezuela, I extend my hand.
09:54For the fight against these violence-generating groups that have sustained from Colombia,
10:03drug trafficking, the number one public enemy of Venezuela,
10:09Mr. Uribe and Mr. Duque, legally declared by the National Assembly
10:14as public number one enemies of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces,
10:18of the people of Venezuela and of the popular military-police fusion.
10:26Venezuelan Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Josel Cabello,
10:30confirmed on Wednesday that the criminal Wiléxis Acevedo, accused of various crimes
10:34such as murder, robbery and extortion, was killed during a security operation.
10:43Today, in an operation at 7.30 in the morning,
10:46in an operative on the Petare-Santa Lucia highway, Fila de Marech,
10:51La Lagunita Sector, Filas de Sauce highway,
10:55during an armed confrontation,
10:59has fallen the criminal Wiléxis Alexander Acevedo,
11:09one of the people who has done the most damage to the community of Petare.
11:13There are countless murders,
11:18extortions, that this individual executed with terror
11:22against the inhabitants of the municipality of Sucre in Caracas.
11:28Likewise, Cabello assured that the criminal was linked to extreme right-wing politicians
11:32recalling the Guarembas of 2017.
11:38It is important to remember the links of this person with the extreme right.
11:42Let's remember Venezuela where the Guarembas began
11:46in 2017.
11:52Let's remember they triggered acts of violence in Petare, shootings,
11:56persecutions, wounded, that was the order for the groups behind the violence.
12:04After these Venezuelan security operations, let's see now some aspects
12:08of the profile of one of the most wanted criminals in the country, Wiléxis Acevedo.
12:13For years, Wiléxis Alexander Acevedo Monasterios,
12:17also known as Wiléxis, controlled the community of Petare
12:21through organized crime, violence and death threats.
12:25According to reports, Wiléxis was supported by the Venezuelan far-right
12:29and Colombian drug dealers in a plan to undermine the stability and security
12:33of the country. Wiléxis also sent death threats against President Nicolas Maduro
12:37and Venezuelan government authorities while intimidating
12:42the residents of Caracas with extortion and assassination threats, among other crimes.
12:52In Ecuador, amidst the violence crisis faced by the country,
12:56the general elections keep moving forward and at least 13 million citizens
13:00have already been called to take part in the decisive event to be held
13:04on February 9th. For the elections, a total of 16 presidential
13:09candidates were formally registered before the National Electoral Council,
13:13who aspire to become the next president of the country for the 2025-2029 term.
13:17However, a few days before the campaign's closure
13:21and in the midst of protests driven by the increase
13:25of insecurity and the economic crisis, the candidates intensified
13:29their electoral propaganda with caravans and visitors to neighborhoods
13:33to attract more votes. Nevertheless, in spite of the protests,
13:37the electoral race is moving forward and the elections are expected to take place
13:41without any mischief.
15:07Welcome back to From the South.
15:11The United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East
15:15reported Wednesday that the repeated Israeli incursions
15:19in the northern West Bank have caused the displacement
15:23of at least 2,000 families in Guinea.
15:27The United Nations body reported that since January 1st,
15:31more than 1,000 families have been displaced.
15:35The body reported that since mid-December, large-scale Israeli raids
15:39against the refugee camp in Guinea have left the camp in ruins
15:43and almost uninhabitable. The international agency also informed
15:47it is facing difficulties in providing essential services to the camp
15:51as the magnitude of the devastation exceeds its capabilities.
15:55It also informed that the recent attack on the camp threatens to undermine
15:59the ceasefire reached just a few days ago in Gaza.
16:05The Israeli occupation forces have continued their siege
16:09on the Palestinians in the West Bank, increasing their presence on the roads
16:13in addition to blocking the entrance to several localities.
16:17The Tel Aviv regime closed roads and blocked access to several villages in Hebron
16:21on Wednesday, preventing the free movement of Palestinian citizens.
16:25The Zionist forces also installed an iron gate at the entrance
16:29of the village of Deir Amar, west of Ramallah, in addition to the
16:3318 iron gates and more than 898 checkpoints
16:37set up by the colonial army as part of its policy of collective punishment
16:41that hinders the daily life of the Palestinian population.
16:49Meanwhile, local authorities reported the illegal detention by Israeli
16:53forces of around 30 Palestinian construction workers in the area
16:57of Kitbet at Deir, southwest of Bethlehem. They also
17:01detailed that the detainees were
17:05subjected to harsh interrogations on the spot as part of
17:09the Israeli occupation's ongoing aggression against civilians and their property
17:13in several areas of the West Bank.
17:19Displaced Gazan citizens are returning home after over
17:2315 months of aggressions, encountering an apocalyptic and devastating
17:27landscape in the coastal enclave. Many Gazan families are coming back
17:31to their homeland, in which 92% of all houses have been severely
17:35damaged by the constant Israeli incursions. Palestinian residents
17:39are now worried about the fact that they cannot recover what they lost.
17:43Some international organizations ensure that Israel has embarked
17:47on a scorched earth campaign, with the objective of
17:51wiping out the possibility of life in the Gaza Strip.
17:58The European Union admitted that sanctions against Russia
18:02impact energy prices across the region. The President of the European
18:06Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, acknowledged that energy prices
18:10across the European Union skyrocketed due to the interruption of
18:14ship supplies from Russia. Furthermore, the leader noted that the loss
18:18of Russian supplies made worse the European Union energy crisis.
18:22The authority granted that households and businesses are suffering
18:26power outages, however, built and not going down. Von der Leyen
18:30said that before 2022, the European Union received
18:3445% of the gas and 50% of the coal from Russia,
18:38and Moscow was one of the largest suppliers of oil to the European Union.
