00:00The Philippines hopes to see accelerated progress in ASEAN's management of climate

00:13change efforts due to rising vulnerabilities to natural disasters in the region, according

00:18to Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo.

00:23We would certainly be very open to discussing initiatives such as that.

00:28In all countries, large or small, we are affected by climate change, which is really, now it's

00:38a reality and no longer something in the distant future.

00:41So yes, I think it would be also important for ASEAN to focus on this issue as a group.

00:50In an exclusive interview with FMT on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Minister's

00:55retreat, he pointed out that the Philippines has taken some initiatives to handle natural

00:59disasters and disaster risk reduction.

01:04In fact, now, for example, the Philippines will be the headquarters of the board of the

01:11Loss and Damage Fund.

01:14And that will have a very important role to play in acquiring finance to help countries

01:22undertake climate action activities, especially in terms of mitigation and adaptation.

01:30The Philippines signed the host country agreement for the board of the Fund for Responding to

01:34Loss and Damage at the 29th Conference of the Parties in Baku, Azerbaijan, last year,

01:40and will begin overseeing fund disbursement this year.

01:45Southeast Asia is among the most disaster-prone areas globally, experiencing over 150 natural

01:52disasters annually, including floods, storms and earthquakes.

01:58The Philippines ranks highest worldwide, with 87% of its population affected by disasters

02:04in the past five years.
