00:00I'm Professor Madya Dr. Hafizan Azman from the School of Computer Science, Dallas University, Selangor, Malaysia.
00:12TalkBeam is one of our projects that we created from the beginning after an incident
00:21where we had a meeting with the people in charge.
00:25We had an issue to understand the sign language because not everyone can understand and do sign language.
00:32So when the project came, we identified a problem to understand the sign language that they do
00:38because I myself did not learn sign language.
00:41Luckily, Dr. Melati, one of the members of our team, learned about sign language.
00:47So she had to be an interpreter in the meeting.
00:50But the environment when we had this meeting was strange.
00:56It was not like a normal meeting because we had to use an interpreter.
01:02So after that, we and the team identified several speakers from Dallas University
01:09and also speakers from Multimedia University to jointly come up with an application that we named TalkBeam.
01:15Through the digital technology application that we developed,
01:18we can include people who lack skills in the activities that we do every day.
01:23To develop a mobile application for TalkBeam,
01:28the first step is to understand TalkBeam itself, the sign language of Malaysia.
01:34Luckily, in Malaysia, under the cooperation of the Malaysians and MyBeam,
01:38and Dr. Anthony himself has given us help to use books that contain all sign language in the language of Malaysia.
01:48So overall, it's actually from a video processing from sign language people to our backend engine
01:56and from the backend engine, text will be translated.
02:00So video to text.
02:01The hope for this second Innovaton is of course to help our community.
02:09We are all busy talking about UNSDG, talking about inclusivity, talking about One Malaysia.
02:15But when we face a situation like the one I mentioned earlier,
02:21or even in class, when teaching, when there are people who lack skills,
02:26they can't be together in discussions, that's one thing that we all need to think about.
02:33So my hope from Innovaton is that if TalkBeam succeeds,
02:39we will be able to help people in Malaysia, the community in Malaysia,
02:43to help people who lack skills together.
02:47We know they also need to live, we also need to live.
02:51Why not we live together as One Malaysia?
02:54God willing.
