00:00I'm Mohd Farid bin Mohd Said,
00:06I'm a lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering,
00:09University of Technology, Malaysia, Johor Bahru.
00:11In 2015, we had an expedition to the South Pole,
00:15to Antarctica, to see what we call underwater monitoring or inspection.
00:21But the temperature was very cold, 0.5 Celsius, 1 Celsius cold.
00:25So that was the beginning of us wanting to buy an underwater vehicle.
00:29But the price was very expensive.
00:30The price we got was around 300,000 ringgit for one UROV.
00:35So that was the start of our innovation on this underwater monitoring device.
00:40Okay, if you look at this, it's the same as what we see on our display,
00:44on this computer.
00:46Now it's 0.3 meters, close to zero, which means it's close to the surface of the water.
00:50Okay, let's move forward.
00:52Forward.
00:53So now it's minus 0.2, zero, which means it's really above.
00:58And if you look at this, it's a compass.
01:00Because when we're underwater, we're blind. We don't know the direction.
01:03This is its direction.
01:05So we're going to dive to see where the wall is.
01:08So you can see that the wall is 0.8, 0.9 meters, 1 meter.
01:13Usually, in an inspection tank, we'll do it like this,
01:15to see how many steps it has.
01:18Whether it's dirty or not.
01:19So we can move inside and see how it is.
01:23Basically, there's a camera in there, with lighting and everything,
01:27so you can record the real-time situation underwater.
01:33The purpose is to do what we call underwater monitoring or underwater inspection.
01:39For example, bridge inspection, to check if there's a crack or not.
01:43Sometimes, the diver will come down.
01:45But because of safety issues, it's a long story.
01:48So we put down the bridge, we avoid the roadway.
01:51There are a lot of challenges.
01:53But one of the biggest ones we face is,
01:56firstly, when we do it in a factory, it looks beautiful.
02:01Everything runs smoothly.
02:04But in a real application, for example, you go to the lake.
02:07Sometimes, there's an effect in terms of water, sea, salt, etc.
02:11Sometimes, it leaks.
02:13We call it an electronic casing, it leaks.
02:16So once it leaks, your sensors are all wet.
02:19So that's the first thing.
02:20The main component is not available in Malaysia.
02:23Meaning, it's not locally made.
02:25It's not made in Malaysia.
02:27So we have to buy it from the US, and recently from China.
02:30So the cost is high.
02:32And when we look at it from the outside,
02:34when we maintain it, that's the problem.
02:36Our hope, when we participate in the second season,
02:40is more to see our innovation being raised,
02:45and we hope that the judges and the audience
02:47can understand what we're doing,
02:50and we can gain awareness about technology,
02:53which we call local production.
02:56With our expertise, the judges and the audience
02:58can choose our innovation here at ETM.
