00:00After the Bonifacio Day, and based on these events,
00:04we still feel the importance of history.
00:07If that's the case, as a little glimpse of the past,
00:10let's watch the unveiling of the newly recovered documents
00:14that serve as a witness of our history.
00:17Let's watch this.
00:20The history of the Philippines in a colorful and meaningful story of difference,
00:25unity, and the dreams of every Filipino.
00:31There are many documents that serve as witnesses of our experiences and successes,
00:37from the ancient writings to the agreements of our freedom and independence.
00:43Moreover, recently, a historic program was held at the National Library of the Philippines,
00:51where the two very important documents added to their collection were found.
00:59The Recovered Philippine Insurgent Records and the Map of the Philippines
01:03attached to the 1898 Treaty of Paris.
01:06The Philippine Insurgent Records contain many documents from the National Library.
01:12Sometime in 1993, there was a pilgrimage,
01:16many documents were lost, and some were recovered.
01:22The historian, Ian Alfonso, also shared here
01:25the important details about the Recovered Philippine Insurgent Records.
01:30These are documents that contain the institutional memory of our first Republic,
01:37the time of Aguinaldo and the time of Bonifacio.
01:41This is important because at least we can go back to the story
01:46of how our first Republic functioned.
01:49From 1898 to 1899, we fought against the Spaniards and the Americans.
01:54One of the people who witnessed this was Honorable Lisa Nakpil,
01:58Commissioner of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines,
02:02who took immediate action to stop the sale of these documents online
02:08and return them to the National Library of the Philippines.
02:12First, the consign asked,
02:16what is the proof that it was really stolen,
02:21that it was really owned by the Philippine government?
02:25Fortunately, it was really stamped.
02:27The American government made a microfilm
02:30and turned it over along with the original documents.
02:33Each document has a number, so it's easy for them to find.
02:38What they saw was that this is our copy,
02:42the original is on the line,
02:44so it's proof that it came from the Philippine government.
02:49A part of the program is the unveiling of the Map of the Philippines
02:52attached to the 1898 Treaty of Paris,
02:55which was donated by the former Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice,
02:59Honorable Antonio Carpio,
03:01and by his wife, Honorable Ruth Carpio,
03:04to the National Library of the Philippines.
03:08Here, the historian, Professor Shao Chua,
03:11gave an insightful presentation
03:13about the importance of the Map of the Philippines.
03:17This map is incomplete,
03:19so eventually, there will be a second treaty,
03:21the Treaty of Washington.
03:23And that is the map,
03:26a symbol of the beginning of the American conquest of us,
03:30which lasted for almost half a century.
03:33When they saw that map,
03:35and they learned what the story of that map is,
03:37they became aware,
03:39and they resolved
03:41that we should preserve our freedom,
03:44and we are the ones who make the decisions,
03:46and what is ours is ours.
03:48In the coming years,
03:50these documents will continue to be a guide
03:53for the new generation
03:55that will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices and successes of our country.
