00:00Nightly greetings one and all, Sharms Isfina here, homegrown and happy to bring you PTV
00:06news now.
00:07Now, tops on our news stories tonight.
00:09Even before the trifecta of Nica, Ofel and Pepito crossed over and laid waste to huge
00:14areas of the Luzon mainland, the president had assured the disaster-stricken provinces
00:19of Bicol and Batangas in the fallout from killer storm Christine of no let up in the
00:24flow of family food packs and relief items, especially to those still holed up in evacuation
00:29sites.
00:30And with clear blue skies and the sun smiling since the start of the workweek, the government
00:35is in the thick of relief and rehab efforts in the areas hit hard by Typhoon Pepito over
00:40the weekend.
00:41So says Office of the Civil Defense Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Lepoposano earlier today,
00:46who also reassured there would be no shortage of food and relief items, along with light
00:51building materials for distribution to the affected local government units.
00:56He also cited the early recovery measures afoot in Catanduanes thanks to the DSWD dispatching
01:01food relief items, roofing sheets and building materials, and tools for repair and rehab
01:07of damaged houses and shelters.
01:10The logistical success of getting these much-needed supplies to the island province is a result
01:14of strategic pre-positioning of such items and the deployment of manpower, consisting
01:20mostly of uniformed personnel and transportation assets to the affected communities.
01:27And in news overseas, there may be only two months left in President Joe Biden's term,
01:32but relations between Manila and Washington will endure even in a Trump 2.0 presidency.
01:38The assurance outgoing Defense Secretary and Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin III conveyed to
01:43the President and DND Secretary Gilberto Quedoro in his last visit to the Philippines.
01:48VOA Pentagon correspondent Carla Babb has more.
01:53U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin breaking ground in the Philippines for a military coordination
01:58center for the two allies.
02:00Austin said America's commitment to the Philippines is ironclad, and the alliance will transcend
02:06changes in U.S. presidential administrations.
02:09This is an important country, not only to me, but to people in both parties back in
02:14the United States.
02:15Austin and his Philippine counterpart signed a new military agreement that allows both
02:20countries to share classified military information securely.
02:26The two countries remain committed to a mutual defense treaty signed in the 1950s, in which
02:31both agree to a joint response should either be attacked.
02:36The mutual defense treaty applies to armed attacks on either of our armed forces, aircraft
02:41or public vessels, including our Coast Guards, anywhere in the South China Sea.
02:50A clear message to China, whose Coast Guard has used water cannon against Philippine ships
02:58and collided with a Philippine Coast Guard ship with American journalists on board.
03:04China disputed the latter accusation, blaming the Philippine ship for the collision.
03:09China is a real and serious threat to the Philippines, and the Philippines understands
03:14that the United States is its true economic and security partner of choice.
03:19Some view the intensified U.S.-Philippines cooperation as a direct countermove to Chinese
03:24maritime maneuvers that deny Philippine boats access to the Philippines' exclusive economic
03:30zones.
03:31Pseudo-military vessels disguised as Coast Guard vessels and maritime militia vessels
03:39in the areas in the West Philippine Sea, they have been very aggressive in their information
03:45operations against the Philippines.
03:49China responded to the increased U.S.-Philippines cooperation by saying no military agreement
03:53should target any third party or exacerbate regional tensions.
03:58Carla Babb, VOA News, the Pentagon.
04:02And at this moment, let's shift focus to PTV's Pine City Studios and my colleague Audrey Villana
04:10for what's hot and happening in the Cordilleras.
04:12Audrey?
04:13In the face of the Philippines, the Department of Information and Communications Technology
04:20is working to digitize the Cordillera region through a free public Internet access program.
04:27According to the agency, 1,200 free Wi-Fi access points have been digitized in the Cordillera
04:35region.
04:36In 2023, the region will have 1.1 million users.
04:41457 access points are in Benguet, 308 in Fugao, 196 in Abra, 191 in Calinga, 99 in Apayao,
04:51and 26 in Mountain Province.
04:54250 additional sites will be available in 2025.
04:58The program will include zero-cost Internet access in public places.
05:04The entire region will have convergence points in government offices, schools, hospitals,
05:12and plazas.
05:15According to the agency, there is a need for digitalization in the region due to the lack
05:22of infrastructure for access to the Internet.
05:27We prioritized the GITA sites because they need more connectivity.
05:33Considering the terrain and the signal, we can see that some of our students have climbed
05:42a tree to get a signal.
05:47It is reported that the GITA Home Development Mutual Fund has received incentives from fund
05:54coordinators, employer representatives, and a multi-purpose loan raffle promo.
06:02It is reported that members of Pag-ibig are registered and active.
06:06Ten Pag-ibig MPL applications have been submitted.
06:10Five of them have been approved for Pag-ibig Multi-Purpose Borrowers.
06:15Fund coordinators and employer representatives will be able to choose Pag-ibig Multi-Purpose
06:24Borrowers for P20,000.
06:27One way of giving incentive to them is the MPL raffle promo for FC and employer representatives.
06:36They just need to be registered as fund coordinators or employer representatives.
06:45We will continue to serve PTV Cordillera and Audrey Villena in the future.
06:52Many thanks Audrey, and that's all she wrote for tonight.
