A study highlighting the impact of digitalisation and emerging opportunities in the Malaysian workforce will serve as a “map of the future”, says Minister Steven Sim.

The Human Resources said that the study, launched by Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp), was the first-of-its-kind and would benefit various stakeholders, including employers and students.

00:00Technology can replace jobs, but it can also create new jobs and new opportunities, which
00:10is why for us in Kusuma, it is very important to have a map of the future, because we don't
00:16want to make guesswork.
00:18We don't want to guess.
00:19We don't want to have what I call a politician's conjecture of what is going to happen next.
00:25I don't want to be shooting in the dark.
00:27This is the first of its kind study in Malaysia.
00:31It not only helped each sector to plan ahead, allow workers in current roles, which will
00:37be impacted within the next few years, to be alerted and therefore take action today
00:42to pivot perhaps to different roles.
00:44Students can also anticipate what the job market will be like when they graduate tomorrow
00:50and prepare themselves accordingly today.
00:53And equally, if not more important, a mapping of the future of jobs like this will give
00:58government and policy makers the visibility of things to come, so that we can craft better
01:04strategies to deal with the future.
01:06We have completed 10 sectors.
01:09The Talent Corp team has committed to the next phase of the study, 12 more sectors within
01:13– they said 12 months, but the Minister said 6 months.
01:18And this report, this data, this information will be a living, breathing document.
01:24Because perhaps by the end of this year or by the first quarter of next year, with new
01:28emergence of new development in technologies, some of this may not be very useful anymore.
01:33So it will be a living document, updated constantly on the MyMaheo platform.
01:49The three main trends, as we already know, are AI, digitalization, and green economy.
01:56We want to see how, in detail, empirically, in terms of research, how these trends will
02:04affect the job market in Malaysia.
02:08In fact, in the past 6 months, we have selected 10 main sectors in the Malaysian economy.
02:15We will give the list of those sectors.
02:17Why are these 10 sectors selected?
02:19Because all these 10 sectors represent more or less 60% of Malaysia's GDP, or KDNK,
02:27which is approximately RM933 billion a year.
02:31And they account for more or less 31% of skilled labor and semi-skilled labor, which is more
02:38or less 3.5 million workers.
02:41So these are the key 10 sectors in our economy.
