00:00Jared Goff with us here on 97.1 The Ticket. Obviously big news today
00:03unfortunately with the Jamison Williams suspension and Jared let's just start
00:08there. You're a veteran, you're a leader, young guys look up to you. I know all the
00:12guys are pros in that locker room but have you had a chance to talk to Jamo or
00:16anybody about this? No I haven't really and and to be honest you guys know I
00:23can't talk about it so yeah well it is what it is we'll see what happens. Do you
00:28step up to reassure the offense and everybody hey we still have a job to do
00:32and guys go down during the season we still got to get this done. I mean yeah
00:39there's injuries every week I don't think you know the guy goes out guy
00:43misses a game it doesn't change our goals or our expectations. We've seen
00:48Tim Patrick emerge a little bit quite a bit actually and now maybe Allen
00:52Robinson might get the bump up what have you seen from him in practice? Yeah
00:58Allen's been just such a professional I've been so impressed by him to be
01:01honest and you know he's been around the league for a long time you know maybe a
01:05year or two longer than I've been around but we've kind of crossed paths here and
01:08there playing against each other and he's always been productive always been
01:11a good player and but I'd never had the chance to play with him and obviously
01:14now I do and just seeing him in practice every day it really is impressive. The
01:19way he approaches every single day and and even more so as a veteran guy who
01:23hasn't gotten the touches and hasn't gotten the looks on game day obviously
01:27but he shows up to practice every day he always does the right thing he's
01:30always where he needs to be and if he gets an opportunity as we go along this
01:34game it'll be different. Can you talk about what it's like to be on a heater
01:38like this? I mean you played it beyond elite a level for the last several weeks
01:44here with this team and you know as a player in the league it's got to be
01:48pretty satisfying to see that happen but can you explain it all to us what it
01:52feels like when you're in the game situation and everything's just clicking
01:56for you? Yeah you know I don't feel like I am or our offense is doing
02:01anything extraordinary or special we're just kind of doing our jobs to be honest
02:05I know it's so cliche but it really is the truth and I feel like I'm playing
02:08extremely disciplined right now I think that's that's the crux of it I don't
02:12think there's been you know certain things that you know are super managed
02:17by me or anyone else we're just staying within ourselves doing our job attacking
02:21the defense applying pressure to them and we have a ton of good players you
02:25know we do we've got a good coaching coaching staff Ben puts a good scheme
02:28together for us and we've done a good job these past few weeks but this is
02:32where it gets hard now teams get some film on us and it's hard to keep it
02:34going and we're ready for the challenge. Do you find that's the key? Dan Campbell
02:39had mentioned that this morning with the guys in the morning show that that he
02:42thinks that you know initially maybe you were just trying to do too much but now
02:46you're kind of staying within yourself and you're seeing the results do you
02:48think that's pretty accurate? You're saying for me personally? Yeah. Yeah I
02:54mean yeah it's I don't know I mean it's it's been a good few weeks and I'm
02:59finding open guys they're getting open I'm hitting them we're protecting well
03:02and I'm just kind of doing what we should do. So Viking game it's such a
03:07huge win on so many levels for the division the conference it's it's just a
03:14big win but let's start with the atmosphere what was it like in Minnesota?
03:18It was really amazing it really was it was it was fun those that's always a fun
03:22place to play because those fans bring it and obviously with them being a great
03:26team this year they bring it even more and we're a great team and so we knew it
03:29was gonna be a fun loud environment and it lived up to the billing and it was a
03:33fun time. How unique or do you guys talk at all about that Skoll chant before the
03:37game where they're clapping above their heads and chanting Skoll? Do we do we
03:43talk about it? Not really I mean we know it's coming and you know it's it's cool
03:47it is cool to see and it is fun. With all that said the sense of satisfaction
03:52I know you've moved on you guys are on to the next game but can you take us
03:55back to inside that locker room the sense of satisfaction to get that W. Yeah
04:01it's big it really is and I think you know if you get three of these road
04:05division games a year and of course you want to win them all but when you can
04:09win the early ones and you can win the ones against you know a team that's
04:11undefeated like that they're big they really are and we'll get them at home
04:16later in the year and but yeah those road ones are tough and we've you know
04:20we've got you know we get two more of those at some point this year and
04:23they're always hard. I think we've asked you in the past about have you been are you a
04:27superstitious guy I think you said no but are you at least conscious of your
04:32routines over the last few weeks and making sure that you repeat the
04:36routines that you have going on? You know I've had a similar routine now for about
04:42six years so I'm probably doing the same stuff I've always been doing it's
04:46not like I'm doing something different. I feel like I'm in a good place playing
04:50confident our offense is playing confident but there's no there's no
04:53secret sauce you're just doing your job. There was a play in the game against the
04:58Vikings where Grenard the defense fan kind of reached out and grabbed your
05:03shoulder you you stepped up in the pocket and delivered a strike down the
05:08field for another first down. I mean it's plays like that it did I think
05:12Lions fans collectively just say that that's awesome but for for you how long
05:19did it take you to get accustomed and just as a quarterback not even just in
05:22National Football League but maybe earlier on that knowing that you're
05:25gonna get hit you're gonna take your hits but you have to trust the process
05:28you got to trust in your lineman to to keep that pocket going so you can step
05:32up. Yeah you know it's it's hard I think when you're younger you get hit early on
05:37in your career and you're trying to figure out you know okay how long do I
05:41have to hang on the ball in the pocket and as you go on in your career you get
05:45more comfortable that time and you become subconscious and then I think
05:48you know when you play you behind really good old Lions you get really comfortable
05:51and you get really you know having a good idea of how long you have and with
05:55our group up front the group I've had in front of me for a few years now it is a
05:59little bit different than the rest of the league where I do have that
06:02confidence in them and comfortability to sit in there and to know where my spot
06:06is in the pocket and for us to be on the same page. The touchdown pass to
06:10Amin Ra you guys they crowd the line of scrimmage Greg Olson on the broadcast
06:15gonna be interesting to see who they bring here there's seven guys up front
06:18you've got five blockers you've got David in the backfield Tim Patrick comes
06:23in motion was that was that part of the play design or was that an option you
06:28said we better get him in here and you called him in? No that was part of the
06:32play design. Okay gotcha and so the throw and the catch gets all the
06:39attention the protection when they rush seven was what made that play possible?
06:44Yeah no doubt I think you know we we knew that they're a zero blitz team
06:48they like to send all those guys and and bring them and when you do that you're
06:51vulnerable on the back end and if we're able to pick it up like we were there
06:55you know there's there's holes to be had and that's the coin they're good they're
06:58willing to flip and take those chances and it worked for them in the past and
07:01sometimes it doesn't we were able to take advantage of them on that one. It's
07:04it's funny because when they crowded the line and I saw them bring everybody I
07:08immediately thought this could be a touchdown because you knew that they
07:13were vulnerable in the back were you thinking the same thing this is gonna be
07:16a big play? Oh yeah oh yeah yeah you're ready for those cover zero looks and as
07:23soon as you know it and you know they're bringing them it's it's game on and
07:27you're ready to throw a touchdown. You present yourself on the field as
07:30completely confident and calm going into the game-winning drive. Now is that
07:34an accurate description about how you feel on the inside as well and and how
07:39were you able to calm the nerves and really kind of rise up to the occasion
07:42in a in a situation like that? Yeah I do I do feel calm I feel like we had it you
07:49know we had the ball I think on like the 30-yard line three drives in a row one
07:52of them we had the unfortunate fumble they take it back next one I believe we
07:55went three and out or had four or five plays and punted it and our defense got
07:59I thought we got our third chance on the 30-yard line so it was like we kind
08:01of were like all right guys like now it's time to go and you know we got
08:05those few big couple big runs early as they would check it down to Gibbs for a
08:09big game and then hit St. Brown it was again it was standard operating
08:12procedure there wasn't anything abnormal we were doing there was no secret or
08:17there's no special thing that we did on that drive it was it was executing our
08:21plays like we know how to and for me personally I try to remain that steady
08:24guy that these guys can look to and yeah I just feel good I feel confident I
08:29felt calm and certainly when you have a kicker like Bates you know you don't
08:32have to get very far down there and we were able to make it happen. Have you
08:35always been that way or was there a moment in your in your career whether
08:39it be Little League football or high school football where or even college
08:43where you just you know what I'm confident my abilities I got this and
08:46I'll exude this calmness and the team's gonna reflect that. Yeah it's always just
08:53kind of been part of my demeanor part of who I am but I do think it's important
08:57for the quarterback to display that and you know for me it comes pretty
09:01organically so I don't have to force it but yeah I do think those guys can feel
09:06it at times when when I am calm like that. One thing about Bates, Dan Campbell
09:10told us a story today that Dave Phipp the special teams coordinator brought up
09:14that the team had a foaling tournament and Bates made it to the finals with can
09:20you can you take us in that like did Bates really show out that day and
09:25suddenly show he can handle pressure? Yeah you know it's a good story and yeah
09:30I think so I think you know regardless of what it is it was you know that we
09:34did this tournament and so there I don't know how many teams there were probably
09:3632 teams and it's a whole bracket situation so it gets all the way down to
09:40the finals and there's two teams left and he was on one of the final teams so
09:43the whole team's watching and you know he's not kicking he's throwing it but
09:47he's he's still there's there's there's high-pressure situations and he was
09:51executing and so yeah you can look to look to that as as part of just who he
09:55is he doesn't see these moments as too big and is under control and has such a
10:01great demeanor to him for a young guy starting out in the league he's got such
10:05a great future. Did his team win the tournament? I think so yeah I think so I
10:10think they did win he was making some I think I think he may have made the
10:13winning throw I mean don't quote me on that but yeah. Who's got the best arm on
10:18the team that's a non quarterback? Oh man that's a great question oh you know
10:27I'm gonna offend some people if I say the wrong thing I would say you know on
10:34you know Kirby actually can throw it pretty far like accuracy none of these
10:39guys have accuracy. Sam Brown I'll say him he can't throw it that far though
10:43like Kirby can like chuck it. Jack Fox? Yeah he throws it okay I mean far though like
10:52Panay can throw it pretty far. Of course he can. What can't Panay do but yeah he can throw it pretty far.
11:00Final thing from me other side of the ball but what can you say about Brian Branch?
11:04Yeah he's been he's been incredible he really has and I'd be lying if I said I
11:09was surprised like he's been doing this in practice to me and to our offense for
11:13for two years now and then through training camp you saw the the move to
11:17safety for him and how good that's been for him. He's an instinctive player he
11:20really is I mean both those guys back there him and Kirby are both just so
11:23instinctive such ball hawks but yeah Brian's been a guy who's around the ball
11:27he's got a nose for it and it tends to make those plays and I'm happy he's on our side.
11:31Have you ever had run-ins with with fans that are fantasy football owners and
11:36complained to you about hey man how come you're not getting the ball to so-and-so
11:40and if you had how do you deal with that and what can you relay one of those
11:43funny encounters? You know yeah quite a bit actually I mean it's more so like in
11:49the offseason like hey make sure you throw it to this guy I'll file that I'll
11:54file that away for week seven when we're playing the Titans to make sure I get it
11:58to that guy for you but no it's it's it's always it's always fun to you know
12:03hear that but it's never ever ever a considered thought and I wish everyone
12:07the best with their fantasy teams but I'm not concerned. Jarrett thanks for
12:11your time as always we'll talk again next week good luck against Tennessee
12:15this weekend. All right guys thank you. Jarrett Goff, Lions quarterback
12:20joining us here on 97-1 the ticket.
