Lions QB Jared Goff joins Karsch and Anderson to discuss a wild come-from-behind victory over the Texans, his turnovers, and more.
Transcript
00:00Jared, thanks for being with us as always. We appreciate it. Congratulations on that win. That was something.
00:06Sure was, man. Yeah, it was quite the roller coaster of a game, but our defense kept us in it.
00:13Our special teams as well, and we were able to finish it off there with those kicks.
00:17Have you ever been a part of a game like that where so much seemed to go wrong and you just stayed within striking distance and came through in the end?
00:26Yeah, I have. I've had games in the past where you're just kind of on the wrong end of some things.
00:32That's the way it works, man. It's the football gods. Things kind of go your way, and sometimes they don't.
00:37I've experienced both, certainly, in my time in the NFL. You play long enough, you will.
00:43I'm proud of our resiliency, man. We are a tough group, and it's hard to keep us down for long. I thought we hung in there.
00:51Not trying to be funny about this, but watching the game at home and watching you in the first half in particular,
00:57it seemed like things were just off, whether it was the offensive line not giving you enough time,
01:03or every throw, it seemed, was in the ground, was throwing it away, or unfortunately was intercepted.
01:11What were we seeing, I guess, as fans? What was it like for you going through it?
01:17Was it just you throwing the ball away, or was there an issue going on?
01:22Every play is different. It wasn't our best first half, but it wasn't like there were bad plays on every snap.
01:32I think the interception, the first one was a tip ball, the second one was really a fumble that went forward,
01:39and the third one was a Hail Mary. It's crappy, but you deal with it.
01:44I thought our guys hung in there, man. At the end, we really settled in the second half and started to make some things happen.
01:51The first half, we'll get cleaned up and move on. Ultimately, you're going to have games like that throughout the year
01:58where things don't go your way, but when you're a team that can find a way to win in games like that,
02:03when you're kind of off and things aren't going your way on the road against another good team,
02:07that's when you know you've got something brewing that's special.
02:10Did you have somebody come up to you during a game from the defensive side and say,
02:13Hey man, we still believe in you. We know we've got this.
02:15Obviously, you're a confident player. I heard you talk after the game.
02:18I thought that you were making the right throws and the right decisions, just things weren't going your way.
02:22Was there somebody on the opposite side that came over to you and said, Hey, we've got this?
02:26No, not really. Those guys knew. I told them, Hey guys, I feel good.
02:31Some things are kind of going against us right now. The ball is bouncing the wrong way.
02:37To be honest, I felt good and felt like I was seeing everything just how I wanted to.
02:43I was throwing it great in some unfortunate situations.
02:47I'd be honest with you guys if I felt like I wasn't seeing things great, but I did and it sucks.
02:54I wish I had a better answer, but I'm glad we were able to pull out the win regardless.
02:59I appreciate those guys so much for sticking behind me.
03:03They don't know what's going on out there. They think the ball keeps ending up in the defensive hands,
03:07but they stood behind me and we were able to make it happen.
03:10Jared, we're going to have to reconnect with you. We've got a bad cell.
03:14If you don't mind, we're going to hang up and then try and have you call back if you don't mind.
03:19There's a lot more to get to here with Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
03:23Obviously, a bit of a cell issue there, so we'll have him come through.
03:28I'm really interested in the last three drives. The last three drives, must-have-it drives,
03:34which have got to be the most satisfying things as a player on the field when it's do-or-die time to come through.
03:42Those are the times that you really get a sense for how good you are, how tough you are,
03:49how prepared for the moment you are, and they were.
03:54They were. That was one of the biggest parts in that.
03:57It was obviously a big part of the game. It was the end of the game.
04:00They had to have it and they got it.
04:02It's the team attitude that they got this.
04:05They weren't going to get frazzled by it, that this is something they've been through
04:09and this is what adversity looks like.
04:11I believe we have reconnected now with Jared Goff, Lions quarterback.
04:15Jared, are you there?
04:20Jared, do we got you?
04:22Hello.
04:25We were just talking about all that stuff happens and yet your last three drives are must-have-it drives
04:31and you guys come through.
04:32How satisfying is it? Touchdown drive, field goal drive, field goal drive?
04:37We started to get our feet underneath us there in the second half.
04:42I thought the way that we called it in the second half was awesome.
04:45Getting the ball into Gibbs' hand, letting him move.
04:48We had some good screens dialed up.
04:50We got a little confidence back.
04:52I think once we got that touchdown, cut it to six points, I believe.
04:56Right then and there, we knew this is a whole new ballgame.
04:59We can go win this thing.
05:00I think it gave our defense a little bit more juice.
05:02They kept playing their tails off.
05:04I think their performance in the second half can't be overstated how great they played.
05:08It's funny because Lions fans and everybody watching, you guys have a critical third and sixth.
05:13You're on the edge of field goal range.
05:15There's a minute 40 to go in the game.
05:17Everybody is thinking Amin Rah, St. Brown.
05:19I'm sure the Texans know it as well.
05:21I feel like you guys have this safety deposit box of plays for Amin Rah that nobody can cover
05:26that you break out at just the right time.
05:28Take us into that play.
05:30What made that play work and why he's your go-to guy in those situations?
05:36Everyone knows how great he is as a player.
05:41They played zone coverage on that play.
05:43We had a play up that works for either man or zone.
05:47He's got a few options of where he can go on that route.
05:51He just found a space and put it on him.
05:53When you've got a guy like him who can play that way and is smart and you can give him a route
05:58that has three different ways he can go, it makes my job a lot easier.
06:02He got himself open and put it on him.
06:04Do you wait for him to cut before you make that throw?
06:06Are you reading the same thing he is and saying,
06:09I know what he's going to do based upon what we're trained to do,
06:13and I'm throwing it to that spot and he's going to be there?
06:16That's correct, yes. That's what we're doing.
06:19Jamison Williams comes out of that game, and I've got to believe he's bruised and battered.
06:24I don't know if he needed to win anybody over, but my god, the respect you guys have to have for him
06:30going through what he did in that game.
06:32It was like a car accident every time.
06:35Yeah, he's a tough kid, man, and he's a fun guy to play with.
06:39I think that catch he had on that little curl route was indicative of that.
06:43It was a huge play for us.
06:45We were still trying to get our feet underneath us at that point.
06:47For him to hold onto that thing in traffic, that was one of the better catches I've been around.
06:53He just keeps on coming along, and I think getting him back into the fold with us this week is huge.
06:59Are you guys starting to get some Roll Tide chants going in the locker room
07:02because you got some major contributions from the guys from Alabama?
07:06Oh, yeah. Brad loves those Alabama guys. You know that.
07:10Those guys have been great for us, and obviously, yeah, it's been fun.
07:15All right, so take us to the end of the game.
07:17You guys get into field goal range.
07:20Jake Bates and the field goal unit sent on to the game.
07:23Do you have a routine to watch a field goal like this?
07:25Do you go to one end or the other? Do you not watch?
07:27What do you do in those situations?
07:31I don't have any weird superstition about it.
07:33I watch, and hopefully he makes it, and the game's over.
07:36If not, we go to overtime, and sure enough, he made it.
07:39Had a lot of confidence in him, though.
07:41He just made the one previously from further out than that.
07:44Makes a ton of them in practice all the time from way further out than that,
07:47which is hard to believe, but he does.
07:50We're inside. We're only 52 yards.
07:52Had pretty good confidence in him to make that.
07:54When he made it, you immediately hugged Coach Campbell, and you guys said something to each other.
07:58Can you share that, or is that private?
08:00Yeah, I just expressed to him that's why our team is different,
08:05because we can handle stuff like that, and he agreed.
08:09At the end of the first half, it almost seemed like we're going to take a chance
08:14and kick a 65-yard field goal if that was going to be possible.
08:17Was that something that was on the table if you guys got anywhere in the 60-something range?
08:25For sure, we would kick it from at least 65.
08:29We were on the minus 45, so we'd have to get another 10 yards or so,
08:34maybe a little over 7 yards or so.
08:36If we would have done that, we would have for sure kicked it.
08:38All right, Z'Darrius Smith, he got interviewed.
08:41We saw him during the game. He got interviewed after the game.
08:43He seemed so fired up to be here.
08:45What do you see in your new teammate?
08:48Yeah, a ton of energy. It's a lot of fun.
08:50I've only played against him for years now,
08:52and to be in the same locker room with him, you get why guys love him,
08:55and guys love playing with him.
08:56A ton of energy, fun to be around, smart player, good leader, you can already tell.
09:01He's going to bring some young guys along with him
09:03and obviously hopefully contribute on Sundays.
09:06Can you describe what it's like after a game like this and you're flying back?
09:09You're on the plane. You're there with all your teammates.
09:11You got a chance to kind of relax and maybe regale in it, too.
09:14What's that flight like?
09:16Yeah, it's fun. Those road wins are always fun.
09:20Sometimes you're kind of talking with guys about how the game went,
09:25where you could have done better and whatnot,
09:27but when it's overshadowed by a W, you kind of always end the conversation with a laugh
09:32because it's like, all right, we could have done that better, but so be it.
09:36We got the W, and we'll clean that stuff up this week and move on and be better.
09:40But yeah, there's certainly a lot of things that we can be better at.
09:43We need to be if we want to keep going on the right track.
09:46Final thing from me along those lines about being on the road.
09:49I just can't get over the fans.
09:51I mean, they are taking stadiums over, and we ask you about it every week,
09:55but they might have actually caused a false start in somebody else's building.
09:58This is incredible.
10:00Yeah, they did. They did cause that false start. It was impressive.
10:03It really is. It's hard to believe and wrap your head around,
10:07but our fans are the best in the world, and I'm so lucky to play here in front of them.
10:10The sport they show me and the sport they show us is second to none,
10:14and getting them on the road like that, it's really, truly unbelievable.
10:17We get one in front of them this week, which feels like forever.
10:21So it'll be fun this weekend to be in Fort Field.
10:23Got a little bit of an off-the-wall question for our last one of the day.
10:27Dozens of monkeys escaped a research facility in South Carolina over the weekend.
10:32They've recovered most of them, but not all of them.
10:35What's the craziest animal encounter you've ever experienced?
10:39Oh, gosh. That's a tough question.
10:43Animal encounter? Like in the wild?
10:45Just in real life, yeah.
10:47I can't believe there's a peacock walking across here. I didn't expect to see that.
10:51That's a good question.
10:53Maybe like a mountain lion, I guess.
10:55In Northern California, there's some mountain lions.
10:57I don't know if I've been close enough to be in trouble by one, but I've seen them.
11:01Wow. I think if you can see them, that sounds to me like close enough to be in trouble.
11:06Yeah, you know. It's all right, though.
11:10Hey, Jared, stay away from the mountain lions.
11:12We appreciate your good work, and we'll talk again next week.
11:15All right, guys. Thank you.
11:17There he is, Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who joins us every Tuesday here on 97.1 The Ticket.
