00:00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:00:25here on the CLNS Media Network presented by all of our wonderful friends over at PrizePicks
00:00:31Game Time and Factor Meals. It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth to break down
00:00:38the football game that occurred Thursday night between the Patriots and the Jets.
00:00:43There was a knockout punch by New York 24-3 in MetLife down there again Thursday night in prime
00:00:52time. Kind of the first game of the year that the Patriots just didn't show up and it was a short
00:00:58week. I know they were banged up, but kind of a disappointing performance just off the top there
00:01:04for a game that I think we both thought were winnable and that they might be able to keep
00:01:07close. It just wasn't good enough offensively. Aaron Rodgers had his way defensively.
00:01:11Surprise, surprise. We're going to talk a lot about quarterbacks and offensive line, but
00:01:16big picture, like where do you think like the energy seemed low? It just wasn't a good showing
00:01:23all throughout the roster. Yeah, that was that was an ugly, ugly game. And I guess my
00:01:29well, my big takeaway was about the line. But like if I had to give a big picture summary of that game.
00:01:34After two encouraging weeks in the first two weeks were encouraging.
00:01:39Every single concern, fear, doubt that we had about this Patriots team coming into the season,
00:01:49like going back to the start of camp, all the things we talked about at the start of camp,
00:01:54the offensive line, the coaching being new, the defense lacking playmakers.
00:02:01Like all of this came back up and was shoved right in your face for 60 minutes of football
00:02:0840 of which the Jets possess the football over 40 of which the Jets possess the football,
00:02:12which is insane. It was the second most law in terms of yardage.
00:02:17It was the second most lopsided Patriots game since 1986. The only other one was in the Cam
00:02:22Newton year. We're going to talk about Cam Newton a few times on the show. That's how rough this
00:02:26game was not in the sense, bringing them back, but using that year as a frame of reference.
00:02:31Every single concern people had with this team, all the reasons big and little pointed to big
00:02:38and reason that people pointed all the reasons big and little that people pointed to as to why
00:02:45this team would come up short and potentially be in the running for a top five pick out of that.
00:02:51We played all the hits last night. They were all on display last night. Did we really miss anything?
00:02:56Even the special teams had its issues last night, except Bryce Beringer, but nobody doubted Bryce.
00:03:02Nobody was saying, yeah, Bryce Beringer is going to prevent the Patriots. We left the summer also
00:03:06saying like he was one of their best players on the practice field. So they played the hits. They
00:03:11played the four and 13 could be another top three pick. Tell me more about Will Campbell and Kelvin
00:03:18Banks hits. That's what that game was last night. That doesn't mean that's what every game is going
00:03:24to be for the rest of the season. That doesn't mean there's not going to be another game like
00:03:28that this season. I think there will be more games like that. I don't think it will be every game,
00:03:32but I think there will be more, but that that's what that was. That game was all your worst fears,
00:03:39doubts, and concerns about this team shoved in your face. Yeah. I mean, there are tons of crazy
00:03:45stats now. And you mentioned like the time of possession I was Drake may play 31% of the snaps
00:03:51and he played one drive that just like the offense was just horrible. And that encapsulates
00:03:57encapsulates a lot. So we'll talk about the offensive line. We'll get into Drake,
00:04:02how this affects Drake in Jacoby. But one more thing, like big picture game wise,
00:04:07did you like their offensive game plan? Because they talked all week about, you know, short week,
00:04:13but they talked a lot about pushing the ball downfield, getting these receivers involved.
00:04:16And it seems like they almost tried to do that a little bit too much. They ran the ball twice
00:04:20on their first two possessions. They tried to really set up, uh, they just,
00:04:24they didn't really try to set up the play action. They were just going off the play action.
00:04:28And then I think we're Mondra only finished with like six carries van Pelt said this morning,
00:04:32in hindsight, he would have rather started with the run to help set up the pass. So how'd you
00:04:38kind of feel about their game plan going into that? Did you think they tried to overcorrect
00:04:43maybe too much to try and get these pass catchers involved and not lead on the run game,
00:04:47which has been kind of their big success here for the first two weeks of the season.
00:04:52So I, I, I like the theory behind it. I'm not going to lie about that. I like the theory behind
00:04:57it in the sense that it van Pelt said this morning, we've run the ball. Well, the last
00:05:00two weeks we wanted to create play action off it. We knew we needed more explosive plays.
00:05:04That's what we were going to do. It, that whole line of thinking makes sense to me.
00:05:10What kills me is all right. So, and he, he kind of talked about this morning. He said,
00:05:17we came right out with play action because we ran the ball. Well, the last few weeks,
00:05:21the jets weren't on the field the last few weeks where you're running the ball.
00:05:25And especially this team that you can beat up with the run, you got to lure them in first.
00:05:30And I get, they didn't run a lot of offensive plays. That's not an excuse. It's part of the
00:05:33problem. They didn't have a ton of time to set things up, but maybe if they had dedicated,
00:05:38put more focus into setting things up, they would have had more time and gotten the payoff
00:05:42on the back end. So the like umbrella approach, the idea behind what they did, what they did
00:05:49makes sense to me. And I like it. And I, I think that I wouldn't lose track of that.
00:05:54If I'm them, the actual execution of taking that philosophy and implementing it in the game
00:06:01is where they came up short. Yep. Especially against the jets defense that was just getting
00:06:06gashed on the ground, right? Like maybe, you know, I, I didn't love it there looking at it,
00:06:11but all right, let's talk about the offensive line. Cause that was of course the big point
00:06:17Jacoby Bursette was just under fire all game and credit to him for getting up still after some of
00:06:23those hits, but he was under pressure. What did it end at 56 and a half percent of his drop anywhere
00:06:30from, I seen anywhere from four, the three numbers I've seen between PFF next gen. And
00:06:36I forget where the third one was from, but I've seen 48, 52 and 56. I've been using next-gen
00:06:42next-gen had them at 56, which is the highest pressure rate for a Patriots quarterback in a
00:06:49game since cam Newton in week 14 of the 2020 season. They also lost that one 24 to three
00:06:55that was against the ramps, but yeah, that was, if it looked as bad as anything you, you remember
00:07:01in, in recent history, cause it was, yeah, yeah, it was like right from the jump to honestly,
00:07:07I thought it was going to be higher. There was one point in that game where not Bursette's
00:07:13pressure rate. Cause they're calculated differently. Bursette's pressure rate is how
00:07:17many times he's pressured the offensive line pressure rate is how many pressures they allow
00:07:23per, you know, snap per drop back. There was one point in that game where they're the
00:07:29offensive line's pressure rate was over a hundred percent because they were allowing multiple
00:07:35pressure. And I mean, I think it was like five plays in, it wasn't, but they were allowing
00:07:39multiple pressures per snap on the first few snaps. Yeah. I mean, there were, and I know
00:07:46the jets pass rush is talented and they've been dealing with, but it's still like picking up
00:07:52stunts. They couldn't pick up a stunt all night. The third, the first third down in the game,
00:07:56you have Michael Nguyen who should be like one of your best linemen. And we can talk about if
00:08:00he's playing out of position maybe, but like a free rusher right up the middle comes, comes right
00:08:05at him and Jacoby Bursette has to bail like instantly. So they're free rushers the, the
00:08:11picking up line games, like Gerard Mayo said, it's not about just doing it. It's about knowing
00:08:15what to do as well. And you're not seeing these guys knowing what to do all the times. And that
00:08:20extends, I know they had two rookies in there, but that's extending to like, again, Mike and
00:08:24window who's making plays like that. So I mean, David Andrews said like the pressure rates just
00:08:29aren't sustainable. They're like, that is an absurd amount of pressure. And I know the first
00:08:35two weeks, I think Jacoby was like at 43, 44%, which was way too high already. And then to be
00:08:41anywhere about around 50% in one game is absurd. And I mean, that's what happens. Like he's going
00:08:48to finish with 98 yards of passing. They're not going to be able to get the offense moving as
00:08:51well. There was the one play, like he showed a hit on the crosser to Austin Hooper off play action,
00:08:58but it's tough to put any of this blame on Jacoby right now. And I know that again,
00:09:03there's one or two of those plays that you like him to hit, but like he's under fire.
00:09:07It seems like every time he drops back and it's impossible to get this offense moving
00:09:11right now with that type of pressure. Well, so this, this goes back. I just
00:09:14want to really quick backtrack to something you just said about, you know, the jets front is good.
00:09:19And I don't think every game will be this. I, they're still allowing over 40% pressure rate.
00:09:26I think they've allowed over 40% pressure rate in all three games. The general consensus is anything
00:09:31over 30. Isn't great. When you get over 35, you're really in danger territory. So the fact
00:09:37they're still over 40, that game was extreme. And honestly kind of reminds me of the Eagles
00:09:43joint practice. Remember how lopsided that was? And we kind of came away saying
00:09:48the alarming part. Isn't that this is just what it's going to be. It's that,
00:09:54that, that, that a defense can do that to them and that the floor is that low.
00:10:00And this was that coming back. What was your other point there?
00:10:04Just like, it's tough to put a lot of the blame on Jacoby. Oh yeah. Yeah. So I mean,
00:10:11was he great last night? No, he wasn't. He didn't really have much of a chance.
00:10:16He did miss that one throw. I just, Jacoby reset being good or not kind of isn't the point here
00:10:23because Jacoby reset. And I, I say this like, I don't mean to dump on Jacoby reset. I'm not
00:10:28trying to do that, but Jacoby reset is not part of what this team is building.
00:10:32And I, beyond being a mentor for Drake may, and the season's all about seeing what you're
00:10:38building moving forward. So Jacoby reset wasn't great. Jacoby reset was kind of who I know.
00:10:43Jacoby reset is that I'm not going to react to that. It's more put Drake may back there.
00:10:51How much changes? And we'll talk about Drake may put dream Drake may back there beyond a 56%
00:10:57pressure rate. How much can he really change as a rookie from what happened last night?
00:11:04Not much. And I know people will say, well, he drove the ball down the field at the end of the
00:11:08game and he accounted for like 40 something percent of the yards. The jets had their backups
00:11:13in, they were playing off. That was not an engaged defense at that point. So it's not me even saying
00:11:24Drake may is bad. It's just, and we can kind of, I don't know if there's more you want to get to on
00:11:30the offensive line, Brian, but I just think this is naturally where this conversation goes.
00:11:34What needs to happen where you can go to Drake may and not be hanging them out to dry. I get
00:11:40the offensive lines never going to be great this year. It might not even be good. This is still
00:11:44something they're going to need to build over the next couple of seasons. And by the way,
00:11:47I just put up a column on this on 98, five, the sports of.com. There needs to be a baseline.
00:11:54There simply needs to be a baseline that is better than last night. And I think they can get there.
00:12:01That's the thing with last night to me is not necessarily reflective of
00:12:08last night to me is more about what happened in the off season.
00:12:12Like they're this depleted week three with some guys they were counting on who are already
00:12:17probably backups. And you had both tackles playing out of position. You had one starting guard as a
00:12:23rookie who has been up and down. You had another starting guard who had began the year on the
00:12:29practice squad and all five projected starters were hurt coming into the game. All five were on
00:12:34the injury report. They, they ended the game with two waiver claims on their left side. That was
00:12:38their ending on pencil. Like let's, let's say Darian Lowe's out misses another week and Kane
00:12:45Wallace has to miss a week. You're starting left tackles probably to Monterey Jacobs who made his
00:12:51NFL debut last night. He's played 14 snaps. They were all last night. I can't do my rant about him
00:12:57not being primarily left tackle because all 14 of those snaps came and left tackle last night.
00:13:02You're putting that potentially opposite Bosa in nine days in San Francisco.
00:13:10You can't subject Drake made it at his first career start, maybe a little down the road.
00:13:15Once he's a veteran and he's seen some things, then you ask him to, to carry more of the weight
00:13:19on his shoulders. Not right now. That's just asking for trouble. So to me, last night was
00:13:24more about just the, the, the way they fail to address the offensive line in the, in this off
00:13:31season, in previous off seasons. And this is what it's going to look like when you don't invest in
00:13:37important positions. Yeah. So I guess the question now is like, where do they go? Because no one is
00:13:43coming. It is up to them. If you want to, you know, flashback to last year very quickly and
00:13:48get those hoodies out of the locker room. But this is kind of the personnel they have.
00:13:53And we've talked a lot, like there's, there's not just a left tackle out there that you can go
00:13:58and grab. Although maybe at this point they, they might just have to go grab a Donovan Smith
00:14:02out of like pure necessity. If some of these injuries that piled up are like serious, like
00:14:07that's not a great solution, but that might just be what they have to do. So where do you think this
00:14:13offensive line kind of goes? Because, you know, Caden Wallace got hurt last night. Michael Jordan
00:14:18got hurt last night. I know they have some extra time here. You hope maybe city. So can get back
00:14:23in the lineup. But, uh, we've talked is Mike and when he was still best out at tackle, like I think
00:14:29you would like to move him the guard, but then you even have another right tackle you can put out
00:14:33there. So like, what is your path here? And injuries will help. Like if you can get the
00:14:39Darien low and you can get city so bad, but what do you think the path is here to try and get that,
00:14:44just that offensive line back up to like basically a playable rate here early on in the season.
00:14:50So this is where I think people are going to get annoyed.
00:14:54One, you don't play Drake. You don't play him right now. I get it. It's the NFL guys get hit.
00:15:00He's going to have to take hits and he is, and there's inherent risks that's going to come with
00:15:03him playing. You can mitigate that risk. You're, you're not putting him back there right now.
00:15:08You're not simply subjecting him to the usual bumps and bruises that come with playing quarterback.
00:15:15He is going to be under fire at a rate higher than any of his peers,
00:15:20rookie or otherwise, as he's managing his first NFL starter starts the spot they're in right now.
00:15:28They kind of just have to ride this out for the next week or two.
00:15:32Well, guys get healthy. I don't think they have another option. You're going to,
00:15:37you might have to put to Montre Jacobs out there. You might have to put Zach Thomas out there.
00:15:41Guys are going to be playing out of position and you just got to kind of grit your teeth and get
00:15:45through it. What the, so that's the shortest term plan. What the short term plan should be.
00:15:50And by short term, I mean over the next month, get healthy. And I've said this,
00:16:00when is it time to start Drake may when you know who your best five are and you have them on the
00:16:05field? I think we know the Patriots best five at this point, even though this, I don't think
00:16:11this unit of five has played together, at least not in this alignment. It's just the best five.
00:16:16I think it might, it's kind of just by default, but tell me if you disagree, Brian, their best
00:16:20five should be the Darien low left tackle left guard. You can still have a competition city.
00:16:26So Leighton Robinson, Michael Jordan, I think those are all, you can continue having those
00:16:31guys battle it out. We'll still, you'd meet the threshold for me for best five, but one of those
00:16:36guys that left tackle. So if Darien low, we'll call, I think city sells the best options. We'll
00:16:41call it city. So David Andrews, Michael, and when it went guard, right guard, and then Kane Wallace
00:16:48at right tackle, they've just got to somehow get to that. If you can get that on the field
00:16:54and see what that group of five looks like, I think they might be representative or they're
00:16:59going to be the best chance the Patriots have of being representative. And then you go from there
00:17:05and you hope you just build some chemistry and, and at the very least you get some consistency
00:17:09and you can kind of game plan and scheme around what you're working with. But I think that has
00:17:14to be the goal right now is getting, setting up a situation where you have those five guys in those
00:17:20spots. And the problem is it's not as simple as plugging and playing guys as they come back from
00:17:25getting hurt because you maybe can't move Kane Wallace to right tackle. If a Darien low still
00:17:32out because they don't have another left tackle on the roster, unless they're suddenly more
00:17:37comfortable with DeMontre Jacobs, you can't. So now you can't kick Mike on when you back inside
00:17:43because you don't have your right tackle. So there's all these moving parts to it,
00:17:48but I think that needs to be the goals to get back to that five.
00:17:51Yeah, I agree. I think that would be their best five. That's five guys at their natural position
00:17:56too, which would be nice. And then you'd assume kicking on window back inside. And if you have
00:18:01city there, your interior, which we talked a lot about in the summer, like your interior will be
00:18:06solid. And that will be at least a step forward if you have those three. And then you hope Caden
00:18:11Wallace can maybe settle in at his natural position. And then we've seen with Darien low,
00:18:15like there's still some times where he'll just lose right away. And you're like, damn,
00:18:19like the losses are bad, but he is a little bit better than last year. He's probably your best
00:18:24option at left tackle. So you hope you can get that five out. And then you can start
00:18:30talking about maybe Drake may, because I'm with you. Like Drake may, if you play football,
00:18:36you're going to get hit and you can't baby him. Right. He's got to play at some point this year,
00:18:40but just being behind like a historically bad offensive line. I think someone had it since like
00:18:472000, Chad graph might've posted it this morning on Twitter since like 2006, the pressure rate
00:18:53through three games is like the 15th worst of all time. So it is like historically bad up there.
00:18:59That's what you don't want. Drake may behind it. You hope they can find the five here and kind of
00:19:04settle it down. And then maybe if you're looking at that 30 to 35%, that's when you say, okay,
00:19:09Drake, you can get in there. Now you're not taking an absolute beating 50% of your dropback. So it's
00:19:15settled down a little bit, but you just have to find a way to get to that five and then hope that
00:19:19the results show with that unit out there. Finally. So I can tell you the number I had
00:19:25going back to 2018. It's the second, if they were to continue this rate for a full season,
00:19:33right? Which right now they're at 44.8 for the season, 44.8% pressure rate. If that were to
00:19:40play out for the course of the season, it would be the second worst pressure rate in the NFL
00:19:45since 2018. The only one that's worse is last year's last year's bears who are 44 nines.
00:19:51You're talking about a 10th of a percent. So you're basically talking about the worst
00:19:55pass blocking offensive line in the NFL in the last five years is what they're on pace to be.
00:19:59Now. I don't think there'll be that. Cause again, Kane Wallace shouldn't stay at left tackle.
00:20:05I you're good. Michael and when, who should be moved back inside to right guard. Like you're,
00:20:10there are areas where you can improve this on the margins. The big improvement isn't coming.
00:20:15The big improvements are playing Louisiana Monroe. And I think like Mississippi state
00:20:20this weekend. Um, I think, Oh, uh, UCLA, no UCLA are playing Louisiana Monroe and UCLA.
00:20:27And I'll even throw you a bone, Brian, uh, your boy, Irises playing Iowa.
00:20:31So we can start throwing. I've had a number of people tell me I should include him in there.
00:20:34And what the hell that's where the big improvements are. Those guys aren't coming,
00:20:37right? Nobody's coming. It's up to us. There are minor improvements you can make. You just got
00:20:41to get healthy so you can get there and then get that rate down. Like, I don't remember if it was
00:20:45you, I was texting last night or somebody is like, all right, so then when do you play Drake
00:20:49because just saying the offensive line is better, doesn't mean anything they could allow, right?
00:20:55So, so they allowed, what was it last night? Like 13 pressures on 26 dropbacks or something,
00:21:00something like that. They could allow 12 on 26 next week and Oh, it's better.
00:21:05Can you sustain a pressure rate under 40%? And that's not a big ask in the last five years,
00:21:10there were 17 teams that finished the season with a total pressure rate under 40%. Um,
00:21:17even the last few years, I think in 2021 and 2022, if I remember correctly, in neither of
00:21:22those years, the Patriots had a game where the quarterback was pressured over 40% of the time.
00:21:26So qualifying quarterbacks, I think Mack Jones technically was in the three pass game,
00:21:31but we're not counting that. Can you like get to there? And it's not a big ask,
00:21:35but can you get to there? And then we can have the conversation. I do think they can get there.
00:21:40I do think they can get to the point where they go from, I looked it up last night. Like if they
00:21:45get under 40%, they would be the, they rank 25th in the NFL. So can they be a top 25 unit
00:21:55is kind of my point. I think they can get there. Okay. Um, a little more offensive line and Drake
00:22:02may talk, but very quickly before we do that, price picks is America's number one daily fantasy

00:23:16price picks run your game. Okay. Um, on Drake may just his debut. I know Gerard male after the game
00:23:26kind of was noncommittal about a starter this morning. He said, you know, Jacoby's our guy. So,
00:23:31um, as you would expect, right with this offensive line play, it's still going to be
00:23:36Jacoby, but just Drake may first thoughts, live action again, it's late in the game,
00:23:42but just, did you have any thoughts on, on how we look kind of in his, his first NFL action there?
00:23:48Yeah. I mean, I think it's what you expect for what the setting was came in late
00:23:51against a good defense, made a couple of plays, uh, the fourth and 10th throw I thought was,
00:23:56you know, that's a plus throw had, I know he scrambled twice. One of them,
00:24:00I think it was like an eight yard game stood out to me is more than just essentially taking what
00:24:05the defense gave him. And I think he created some yards himself. There did almost get picked on his
00:24:09first throw. Um, maybe could have done a better job protecting themselves with some ups and some
00:24:13downs. I, I I'm not ready to proclaim his whole career off of that one drive, but, um, he didn't
00:24:22look at a place. He didn't look at a place. I think that's the biggest thing you, you look at
00:24:27there. It's like, all right. Yeah. He's, he's not totally panicking. He looks comfortable.
00:24:33There's still, you know, technical things they need to work on and it's just tough to come in
00:24:36in that spot, but you hope he's not coming in every game for the final drive down 24 to three.
00:24:42And that we get to a point where he's actually like starting some of these games and able to get
00:24:45in a rhythm. Yeah. Uh, then Pelt said like, you know, his footwork, he was asked specifically
00:24:50about his footwork. And he said that was kind of up and down the one plate, the, the throw to pop
00:24:55was awesome, but like, you could kind of see maybe he like, he drifts off the center line,
00:25:00like to his right and kind of almost invites the pressure, but then like he makes a great play to
00:25:04escape back and then makes a great throw. So like, you just kind of live with the result, but
00:25:08that's probably some of the stuff they might, uh, try to clean up there. But, uh, did you wish they
00:25:14called time out there at the end and let them try to throw a touchdown? I do. And I don't,
00:25:18I mean, yeah, it would have been nice to be like Drake Mays leading all rookie quarterbacks and
00:25:22touchdown passes. Um, but it's, it's, it's late in the game. The game's like, it's,
00:25:29it would just look kind of, kind of bad. And yeah, again, it's like, right. And you know,
00:25:35yeah, he get hurt on that play or something. I wish, I wish they would have run. Hurry up is
00:25:41what I wish they would have done is already got sack, get back to the line. Like, let's get one
00:25:45more playoff. I wish she would have seen that urgency. Timeout just feels like,
00:25:50yeah, that's just such a, I don't want to say a loser move. Cause it's not, but it's like,
00:25:56it's not the preseason and to be treating that game like a preseason game to that extent.
00:26:03I just, it, it, it, it feels pretty, it would feel pretty amateur.
00:26:07Yep. Yeah. It would have been cool. Like I'm bummed they didn't, but I also
00:26:12totally understand why they didn't and I'm okay with it.
00:26:16Yep. If he threw a touchdown there, that would have just been awesome to have that stat that
00:26:21he leads all rookie quarterbacks with, with one passing touchdown compared to all the other guys.
00:26:25But yeah, you understand their thought process not to kind of go with that there. So some good,
00:26:31some bad, you know, just again, I think it was like 14 plays or something right around that
00:26:36number. So don't want to make any big, you know, reveals with Drake mayor or anything, 16 plays,
00:26:42but yeah, it was good that he got some, what is crazy. He got 31% of the snaps. So when somebody
00:26:48looks back on that in five years and tries to remember what happened to me, he played that
00:26:51much of the game. Wow. And it's, he played one drive. They just couldn't sustain anything the
00:26:56rest of the night. Yep. Oh man. So anything else on the quarterbacks or the offensive line? I mean,
00:27:05I know we all want to know when Drake's going to play, but it's so hard to just pinpoint a week
00:27:09now, right? Cause you want the offensive line to get to a baseline again, but
00:27:15well, I guess we got to wait and hear what the deal is with Wallace, but low,
00:27:19they kind of made it sound like, was it major at least when that happens.
00:27:23So now he gets extra rest. So, right. I still don't think San Francisco,
00:27:27I think there's a chance he plays in San Francisco. I think there's a chance his
00:27:30practice reps increased this week, but I, Miami is still in play for me. If low and, uh, sorry,
00:27:40if, if, if low and Wallace are healthy for week five, even if city, so it's not back and it's,
00:27:45it's Leighton Robinson or it's Michael Jordan. If your two tackles are healthy week five,
00:27:50I think you consider it. If those two guys are healthy, I think you have that conversation.
00:27:56Yeah. Mike back inside. We can also, you know, get the, get the Reese tweet in 10 minutes that
00:28:04Kane Wallace is going to miss a month and a half. And now I don't know where you go from there.
00:28:08Yeah. That, then you're in trouble. Then you probably have to keep what you literally just
00:28:13have to keep Michael winning about right tackle. Cause you don't have another tackle, uh, to play
00:28:18with there. Then Leighton Robinson and city. So are your guards, hopefully if, if city's healthy.
00:28:22So, uh, we'll see with him, we'll, we'll see what Drake, but yeah, that was my other thing.
00:28:27I was going to ask you just on him. I know Gerard Mayo said status quo in terms of practice reps,
00:28:33which was Drake taking that 30%. I think we talked about like before the season started,
00:28:39cause we were all looking at week five. And I think we said, like, maybe this long,
00:28:43you know, Mayo called it a bonus Monday. This could be a time to get some extra
00:28:48Drake may reps in there. Do you think that this could be a time here to kind of amp up his,
00:28:53his participation, even if it's temporary, even if they in the building say he's not starting until
00:28:59I don't know, I'll tell him I had week 10, right. I would still look at this and say,
00:29:03we have a mini bi-week. There's going to be more snaps available. We have extra practices.
00:29:07Let's let's gear the kid up. Even if we gear him back down next week, let's gear him up
00:29:12for this week and see what that looks like. So one way or the other, I think he should be getting
00:29:17more time. The other thing too, that is a factor. And to this person's point here,
00:29:24every time Jacoby Brissett gets hit, he gets up a little bit slower.
00:29:28And for all, we're talking about this timeline for Drake may I'm I'm like 50,
00:29:3550 that it's even going to matter. And I know there's any play. It feels right.
00:29:40And I know there's some people, I think Andrew Callahan wrote about this today that say they
00:29:45need to get a veteran quarterback in and are kind of going back to that. But we called the,
00:29:49the, uh, the buffer quarterback, remember that from the summer and going back to the
00:29:53buffer quarterback idea. I know some people are going back to that, uh, which I'm not entirely
00:29:58opposed to, but that's a separate discussion. The point being like, you've also got to be looking,
00:30:03looking at this and saying, Jacoby's taking it on the chin and there's a real chance.
00:30:10This kid's going to need to play before we want him to play. Let's make sure we're not
00:30:13throwing him to the wolves in that regard. So I would absolutely ramp him up this week,
00:30:17one way or the other, but yeah, that that's the other thing for it. We just spent what?
00:30:2120 minutes on, on the drink may timeline. It could happen. It might end up not mattering.
00:30:27It, I mean, beyond the extent that I don't think he's starting in San Francisco, I would hope
00:30:33it's not going to happen in practice. Like the guys wearing a red shirt, the offensive line
00:30:37should be able to handle that. Whoever's out there, but beyond that, it may be all for not.
00:30:44If you have Bosa aligned up across from DeMontre Jacobs in nine days here,
00:30:49it could happen pretty quickly. It would take may take you over. You could also have that.
00:30:53I mean, Miami's front. Yeah. And then we saw Houston after that, what they just did to Caleb
00:30:59Williams. So yeah, that's true. Um, it's not getting much easier. Uh, you could sign Bailey
00:31:03Zappy back off the chiefs practice squad if you need your buffer quarterback there. Um, but yeah,
00:31:10who knows? It could really happen at any point here with how Jacobi has been taking it on the
00:31:14chin and credit to him for keep getting up and playing. But, um, yeah, by the way,
00:31:19sneaky, one of the toughest dudes in the NFL, like, can, can we put him in and Brian,
00:31:25I'll ask you this, cause this is more your subject and I don't want to overstep for you.
00:31:29Where's Jacoby reset on like the hockey player scale.
00:31:34He's up there. He, there have been multiple times the last two weeks where I did not think he was
00:31:40going to get back up and he's gotten back up. I know hockey players like to look down on the
00:31:44athletes from every other sport for not playing through injuries. And to an extent I get it like,
00:31:48you know, Patrice Spurs run playing through the punctured lung is the one that always gets
00:31:51highlighted. But I feel like it's gotta be at the point where, where, where if you're a hockey guy,
00:31:57you're at least looking at that and being like, all right. Impressive. Yeah. Tip your cap. He
00:32:02hasn't even been on the injury report yet. Has he? So no. And he's got that cut on his hand too.
00:32:07Yeah. That was a pretty nasty. It looked like some turf turf burn there. So that was pretty
00:32:11gnarly, but, um, all right. Quarterbacks offensive line. That's the big thing. Um,
00:32:16elsewhere on the offense, they got pop Douglas involved, seven catches 69 yards. I think it
00:32:22ended as, and he had a run, uh, for nine yards. They made it a point to get him the ball, right?
00:32:28He added a couple of screens. He added that, that reverse on a run, which was a nice kind of design
00:32:33play. Um, and they finally hit an explosive play action that was to pop it as well. So that was a
00:32:38priority to get him involved. Uh, and you see kind of the difference he does make again, even though
00:32:43they often scored three points, you can see the difference pop Douglas can kind of bring this
00:32:47passing attack when he does get the ball in his hands. Yeah. I, I will say though, a lot of that
00:32:52came in the second half. Um, I have it here. Hang on, uh, 36 yards, uh, 46 yards total in the second
00:33:02half, 20 of those yards on the drive with Drake Mase when the defense had let up a little bit,
00:33:07it's good. They're getting more involved. I think some of that production was kind of empty.
00:33:10It is good. They're getting more involved, but I talked about this when we previewed the game,
00:33:15like there's a fine line between making a point of getting your good players involved
00:33:20and forcing the ball to players. Cause when you force the ball to players, you handcuff yourself.
00:33:24And it's about getting pop Douglas involved in the context of the entire offense, not just making him
00:33:30the offense. And I felt like they leaned a little more towards making him the offense last night,
00:33:34rather than building him into everything they planned on doing. Yep. And if you want to talk
00:33:40about like the empty production, wasn't like, wasn't it like 12 yards on like that slant before
00:33:46the, uh, before the Hail Mary throw or like the defense. So yeah. So yeah, maybe, maybe some empty,
00:33:52empty production there, but good to see him more involved, but yeah, maybe do it a little more
00:33:57naturally moving forward. Although like you'd expect him maybe like one or two scheme touches
00:34:01a game just cause he's electric. Well, so I would say the most encouraging thing to me,
00:34:06I loved that player. They motioned him into the backfield and essentially a pistol and, and
00:34:10everybody has a handoff or a pitch or whatever, like to him. Yeah. Like that kind of thing,
00:34:15or the screens like, all right, do that. Don't just force throw them slants, but some of the
00:34:21creative play design is, is more what stood out to me. Yeah. And that was a nice play by
00:34:26Caden walls too. He kind of got out and led the way there, but yeah, more of those. And then like,
00:34:31you'd expect him to be one of those guys, like running the crossers on the, on, on the play
00:34:35action. That's a good spot for him. So more of that for pop. Um, any other offensive players?
00:34:43I mean, it wasn't much to stand out, but any, anything kind of catch your eye or like
00:34:48remanded Stevenson again, just six carries for 23 yards, but he fumbled for the third straight week.
00:34:53Yeah. So we lost one, not great there. Ball security wise,
00:34:57remanders got to work on the ball security. If there is a silver lining for last night, for me,
00:35:01six touches for remandering Stevenson, they kind of, and some of that was cause he hurt his hand,
00:35:06but he got a night. He'll get a chance to be arrested going to that San Francisco game,
00:35:11but the ball security is an issue. He can't be putting the ball on the ground. They don't have
00:35:15that margin for error, especially with the guy that is going to be a very involved part of their
00:35:19offense. Like if you start having to limit him because he can't hold onto the football,
00:35:24you lose a very important playmaker. One other observation, just, um, Jalen Polk
00:35:30continues to look like a good, solid, tough receiver made a couple of catches last night.
00:35:35Nothing that's going to, you know, mind-blowingly change the offense,
00:35:38but I just am still encouraged by what I'm seeing from him.
00:35:42Yep. Uh, who do you think Drodd Mayo said pregame Kendrick Bourne is kind of close.
00:35:50How do you think this receiver room could look when Bourne comes back? Because I know like
00:35:56Taekwon, he drew the DPI, but it just hasn't been much from him. Osborne didn't have a catch
00:36:01last night and didn't look great in the run game. He got pushed around once or twice as well.
00:36:05How do you think this room kind of evolves when Kendrick Bourne comes back into the equation?
00:36:11I think he probably steps in mostly for Osborne. He should step in for,
00:36:14for Taekwon. I just don't think that's going to happen. You're probably looking at K Sean booty
00:36:18getting cut, maybe going back to the prac squad unless there's an injury or something, but
00:36:23they need them. They need them because they just need another explosive player.
00:36:26We'll see what he looks like coming off that knee injury, but
00:36:29they could use them. They could really use them right now.
00:36:32Definitely. All right. So that's the, uh, offensive breakdown again, just three points,
00:36:37a lackluster performance as the pressure kind of takes center stage. Uh, again,
00:36:43we saw Drake Mays debut, but we'll see when we see him next. Cause Jacoby sounds
00:36:48like he'll still be the starting quarterback. So, uh, over to the defense, but very quickly,
00:36:53before we do that, I want to tell you guys about our friends over at factor meals and football

00:37:59all right, to the defense, they missed John Bentley very badly. They could not tackle, uh,
00:38:06Rayquan McMillan and Jelani Tavai were kind of those next two guys up for Juwan Bentley.
00:38:11And they both struggled in the run game to get off blocks. Uh, Aaron Rogers had no issues who
00:38:17Aaron Rogers looked great by the way, as well. Uh, even, you know, on the runs escaping the
00:38:22pocket, which they let them out of the pocket too many times. Some of that was to buy as well.
00:38:25And, and Rogers had no issue, uh, attacking those guys in the past game as well, when they were
00:38:31mismatched against backs or tight end. So, um, wasn't a great first game there without Juwan
00:38:37Bentley, who looks like he's out a while, whether it's season ending or he comes back for the
00:38:42regular, like the last few weeks, we don't know yet, but it's, they got work to do without him
00:38:47there in the middle of the defense. Yeah. I mean, I knew he was going to be a big loss. It was a
00:38:51bigger loss than I thought the tackling, uh, guys just looked at a place at times that the play
00:38:57recognition wasn't there. It's going to take a lot to replace them a lot. And even still,
00:39:03they might not get all the way there. Um, they missed them on a number of different
00:39:06fronts last night. The biggest thing was the missed tackles though. Like you said
00:39:09at late in the game, I don't, I think the jets had one more drive after this. The game was
00:39:13obviously out of hand at that point, but late in the game, they showed a stat on the broadcast,
00:39:1713 missed tackles for 100 yards. You can't give away a hundred yards. You're just not going to
00:39:23win a game, giving away a hundred yards. So yeah, that now suddenly, I think two guys that
00:39:32come to the forefront that we haven't talked a lot about, obviously Rayquan McMillan is still
00:39:36going to play some, they moved Jelani to buy to more of an off the ball, middle linebacker role.
00:39:40And obviously the jets went right at him. Uh, that was, you go back to when Jelani to buy,
00:39:45got first, got here. And we all wondered about what exactly is the plan. He wasn't playing well,
00:39:51they moved him to the edge and that's where he's been a solid player for them.
00:39:54Like he has been, he's been a solid player for them for the last few years on the edge. Now
00:39:59he's back in the middle. It doesn't look as good. So to get back to my point, the two guys that
00:40:03suddenly come to the forefront are Sione talkie talkie and yeah, we're going to do Marta Mopo
00:40:08again. And can they play like they need speed at linebacker? He is a linebacker. I know they think
00:40:16he's a safety, but he can play linebacker. He's played it in reality. It's probably mostly
00:40:21Sione talkie talkie. That's the guy you're talking about stepping in. And I think he's
00:40:25going to play significant role when he comes back. But a guy like Mop who giving them 10 to 15 snaps
00:40:32a game on, on passing downs would be big right now. And will they actually put him in that spot?
00:40:37We'll have to see, but we are, I think we are going to do that thing again.
00:40:41Well, they might be forced to do it, right? Because they have
00:40:44Roger and peppers. Obviously you're going to play a lot. Jalen Hawkins has been kind of that third
00:40:49rotational safety. So there's not really a room in the safety room for Mop who, and if they're
00:40:53looking at it without Bentley, maybe they'll say, okay, we kind of, if we want to get him
00:40:57on the field defensively, it has to be right at that second level. So maybe that could be
00:41:03again, I don't want to say blessing in disguise because you'd rather just have
00:41:05John Bentley out there and have him healthy, but maybe that does kind of force their hand
00:41:09to get Mop who a little bit involved on that second level when he does come back.
00:41:13And then yeah, talkie talkie should have a big role there as well. They're both eligible to
00:41:17start practicing after the San Francisco game. So we should see we'll get our first glimpse to
00:41:23see if they come back, but that that'll help. And yeah, the, the missed tackles was just
00:41:28horrible. You mentioned it was a hundred, a hundred total yards loss on the 13th tackles.
00:41:34Next gen had it. Yeah. 13, they missed 11 total in the first two weeks and they gave up an extra
00:41:4034 yards in the first two weeks combined. And then they went 13 for a hundred last night.
00:41:46So the tackling was not up to par with the usual Patriots defense. I don't know
00:41:50some of that maybe it was Thursday night, but it just wasn't good enough and that's got to get
00:41:56corrected. And that starts at the top there with Mayo and DeMarcus Covington. So that that's got
00:42:00to improve to begin with. But Rogers also kind of picked apart their past defense, which second
00:42:08straight week, a quarterback has kind of had his way with the past defense. I know like the stats
00:42:14look good for Christian Gonzalez, one-on-one against Garrett Wilson, even though he did
00:42:18give up a touchdown, which was a great pass for Rogers. But are you concerned with just the level
00:42:25of play in the past defense right now? Cause they're still letting random tight ends drop
00:42:2990 yards on them, Tyler Conklin. And it's just, it was just too easy for Rogers last night over
00:42:34the middle of the field and just picking match-ups all over the place. So to me,
00:42:38what really killed them last night, you just said it match-ups. Like I actually thought
00:42:41Christian Gonzalez was fine on Garrett Wilson. It definitely wasn't his best game, but it not
00:42:46nothing that set off alarm bells where the jets really killed them was six foot five Al Lazard,
00:42:53six foot four Mike Williams working against Jonathan and Marcus Jones in picking those
00:42:58match-ups and Alex Austin's active. And you think, all right, that's a bigger corner.
00:43:02He should give them some help. He gets bullied on an early touchdown. And
00:43:07the issue to me was struggling with bigger receivers, which has been a problem for this
00:43:10team in the past. And if you look at their schedule coming up, they've got Houston.
00:43:15They've got some size, um, in the wide receiver room. Uh, Jacksonville's got some bigger wide
00:43:20receivers. They're going to have the jets again in about a month. The Rams, if their receivers
00:43:25are healthy are on the bigger side, obviously they have to play, but it's a possibility.
00:43:30So that's a game where like, I'd hope you'd get a little more from Alex Austin
00:43:34to help kind of negate the, the, the physical mismatch that you were dealing with. But
00:43:42I think they're going to have trouble with these teams with bigger receivers. Cause that's what
00:43:45Rogers was doing. He was just looking at where Marcus Jones, Jonathan Jones was
00:43:49and throwing that guy, the football. Um, and that's obviously not something you can
00:43:53scheme around six, five, six, five, five, eight, five, eight. Can't coach it. And
00:43:58credit to those guys. They were competitive at times despite that mismatch, but they're,
00:44:02I mean, that one play to Mike Williams where Rogers throws it outside his frame and they're
00:44:07Jonathan Jones is right on him. It doesn't matter because Williams can reach so far outside the
00:44:11frame to get the football. So yeah, that that's the bigger concern for me, like the tight ends
00:44:16gashing them. That's going to happen. Honestly, that's part of the whole, like beating cover
00:44:22two thing. And I am, I, I, we can do the cover two thing if you want at the end of the show, but
00:44:28we don't need to do the cover too. Well, Mel Kiper's a freaking idiot. And if he wants deep
00:44:33passes, go to Canada, go to like the Canadian football league. They throw 6% more of the time
00:44:38than they do here. And they're averaging two more yard. They average two more yards per attempt this
00:44:42season than the NFL does the Canadian league, the UFL, the indoor football league and division one
00:44:47college football are all averaging more passing yards per attempt and all throwing the ball at a
00:44:52higher rate than the NFL. If you don't appreciate the game of football and use what we big plays,
00:44:56my fantasy team, if that's all you're interested in one, you're not actually a football fan,
00:45:00your fantasy football fan, or your nerd who just wants the khaki shorts, offensive coaches to be
00:45:05right. Go watch in Canada, go watch the indoor game. Nothing against those leagues. You guys
00:45:10know how I feel. All football is good football y'all. But if you're going to be a snob about
00:45:14and say, well, the NFL is a superior product and I can't watch the these inferior other things,
00:45:20they don't play right now. No. Well, but then you can't complain. On the other hand,
00:45:23the passing's down. Go watch Canada is what I would say to that, which I will big game tomorrow
00:45:28night between the Montreal Alouettes and the Ottawa Redblacks for first place in the Eastern
00:45:32Conference. Tune in, go for it. Stupid freaking argument. I'm sorry if you can't tell this
00:45:37bothered me this week. I also think most of the passing is down is a it's three weeks and most
00:45:44of these guys aren't playing in the preseason and B no one can pass protect. Like this isn't
00:45:48just a Patriots problem. The Patriots are like the class of the problem. But like this is a league
00:45:54wide problem that offensive line, but it's also just down and you can't throw the football if
00:45:59you can't block. It's also three weeks. It's three weeks. Figure it like, like I've been told
00:46:05and everybody knows how I get when we start labeling coaches as offensive wonderkins and
00:46:11these generational geniuses. And I've been told that there's more offensive coaching talent,
00:46:16the league than ever. And there's all these revolutionaries across the league, right?
00:46:19Figure it out. Revolutionaries. Can't crack it too high. A thing that's been around since what,
00:46:24the sixties. And I saw somebody say, you know, oh, well, you know, safety's used to play in the box
00:46:30and they used to play in the boxes. They could take the receiver's head off when they came over
00:46:33the middle and they take that away. You want to get rid of too high. Fine. Give me Rodney Harrison
00:46:38But for all of these offensive geniuses, I hear about nobody can crack it too high.
00:46:45Nobody can send a tight end up the seam. Nobody can find the soft spot on the sideline against
00:46:50the cover to against cover to zone. What are we doing? And I actually, part of the reason I love
00:46:55this so much is we're going to find out over the course of this season, who is actually like a good
00:47:05offensive mind that can adapt because football is cyclical, man. That's, what's so great about
00:47:09this game. The offense innovates and has an advantage for a little bit. And then the defense
00:47:14catches up and then the defense innovates, right? Patriots started playing with the slot receiver,
00:47:1911 personnel defenses got lighter. Everybody started running the ball. Two tight ends came
00:47:24in. Like it's all adjusting and readjusting. We're going to find out which coaches are actually like
00:47:30good and real innovators and know what they're doing. And who's just benefiting from a league
00:47:35that completely babies the offense with the rules. And I have a list of who I think is going
00:47:39to end up on which side. If you watch me, if you listen to me, I think you can more or less figure
00:47:44out who's on which list. Uh, you want to guess where Mike McDaniel is Brian, but yeah, that whole
00:47:49thing was stupid. Anyways, what were we talking about? Oh yeah. I'm not so worried about the
00:47:52Patriots getting killed by tight ends because they've had success for a number of years.
00:47:57Basically being like, throw the ball to the tight end, let the tight end have 150 yards
00:48:01receiving and get burned by like these random tight ends. But like that's all the success,
00:48:05the offense, right? So I'm fine with that. I'm more worried about as they start to face some of
00:48:11these teams with bigger receivers, specifically receivers, not like, oh, and they have a good
00:48:15tight end. Who's big, bigger, wide receivers. Nico Collins is what? Six, four, two 22. They're
00:48:20going to face him in a couple of weeks. Um, again, the hug, the jets again at the end of October.
00:48:24That's more what worries me coming away from this game.
00:48:28It kind of goes back. I mean, how much did we talk about this off season about that third
00:48:33boundary court cornerback. Right. And I don't even think we really talked about it from a size
00:48:38point of view, but just having a body kind of rotate in there. And it would be nice now if
00:48:44you could have Alex Austin who, you know, has a little bit more size than Jonathan Jones, but
00:48:49it just, you know, Marco Wilson got that role to start two DPIs in two weeks, he moved to the
00:48:53bench and now you see Alex Austin take it and, you know, he gets bullied, as you said, right away
00:48:58for a touchdown there against, you know, the bigger out on Lazard. So, um, that role kind of
00:49:04still trying to get ironed out. That'll, that'll be a big thing in that passing, uh, defense.
00:49:08So we'll see about that, but yeah, they have some more size coming at them. So I'd love to
00:49:13figure that out, but, um, Keone white was still good, like four pressures. He probably would have
00:49:20had some sacks, but Aaron Rogers was just getting the ball out of his hands. So freaking quick as,
00:49:24as he does. So he w he was good. That was good to see. Uh, Josh Uche too, finally got home for a
00:49:29sack, a couple of pressures as well. So he blew a couple of contains though. I'm not as impressed
00:49:34with Josh Uche to this point as I think some other people he's been, I think he just looks
00:49:39kind of more like his, like physically, like he did two years ago. Like he, he seems to have more
00:49:46juice as a pass rusher, but yeah. And I, I also do wonder if there, you know, we heard him talk
00:49:52that they want to be a little bit more aggressive. I wonder if they're telling him to just kind of,
00:49:55okay, well you can pin your ears back and go now that's hurt him a few times, but yeah.
00:50:00Well, so that's my thing. I think it's hurting more than it's helping. And if you're going to
00:50:02play that way, you need to be able to produce. And I don't think he's, it's a great way to put
00:50:08it around. Like, I think he's just playing really reckless right now and it is working at times,
00:50:12but it's burning him more than it's working. And if you want to just be,
00:50:17you know, pin the ears back and go, you can do that, but you got it.
00:50:21Even within that, there needs to be a little bit of control. Like I know there was one play where
00:50:27they run a twist on the left side and a, with wise and white and the action just kind of narrowly,
00:50:34just naturally brings the two guys in a little bit. Um, so even if it doesn't get home,
00:50:39it's naturally going to flush Rogers to his left. Cause I'm saying they ran it from the
00:50:45left side of the defense, catch and run to Lazard. I think it was, no, I think he checks it down to
00:50:51a tight end, but yeah. So like it naturally pulls Rogers UJs on the other side and he also cuts
00:50:57inside. So now you essentially have all three of your rushers cutting to the inside and I see why
00:51:01you chase doing it. That's just the movie sets up and that's pin your ears back and go. There's not
00:51:05really a plan, but having some awareness of what's going on else around the field, I think would
00:51:09help there. Yup. Uh, any other last thoughts defensively? Uh, defensively? No, I have a,
00:51:18I have a special team stop, but I I'm actually kind of with the coaching staff where they kind
00:51:23of said today, just the fundamentals sucked. And I don't know that they approached it poorly.
00:51:28I don't like in terms of like the game plan, I don't know that they really did a ton of things
00:51:32that didn't make sense. Schematically. Um, it wasn't like last week where I felt like they
00:51:36were spinning the dial too much, getting too cute, didn't tackle, didn't contain the quarterback
00:51:42in the pocket, um, and committed a couple of penalties. And that's going to burn you a lot
00:51:49more than, than schematic stuff will. So they're just sloppy. I that's the, I, I, I, I almost used
00:51:55that as a technical term here. They were sloppy. That's what it came down to. Yeah. I mean someone,
00:52:00yeah, they kept running past Rogers. Someone says like, and credit to Rogers. Cause like
00:52:05he was really good last night. If you would've told me like, they're going to get him outside
00:52:08of the pocket. It make plays a bunch like not ideal, but like sure. Like let's see how he's
00:52:14moving on that. Uh, Achilles. Cause I think coming into the week, he's only complete.
00:52:19I forget if it was completed or attempted one pass, like outside the tackle boxes. I think it
00:52:23was completed. Uh, but he diced them up, you know, on the run last night. So he was awesome.
00:52:28He kind of had some vintage Rogers, uh, to him last night and credit to him for that. But, um,
00:52:34yeah, just again, long week here. So you got to get the fundamentals back, back on,
00:52:39back together. And that kind of starts with Mayo and Covington there at the top. So, um,
00:52:44special teams, you had to take, uh, Bryce Behringer was just awesome. Jeremy Springer
00:52:50said he was the best coverage player with his punts. Uh, call them a weapon as well. And he
00:52:55has been all year. He was very good last night, but, uh, what was your kind of special teams take?
00:53:01They allowed another big pun return. And at what was the key point in the game, you know,
00:53:06come out of the half 14 to three, they go three and out early, but can you back the other team
00:53:09up? Behringer punts a ball 51 yards down to the 13 Brennan school is right there and he misses the
00:53:15tackle. Can't be doing that. They don't have a margin for her to do that. And it ended up being
00:53:19a 21 yard return. Should've been like a negative one yard return. Schooler actually puts the hit
00:53:24on him. It's not an easy play, but Brennan schooler is supposed to be this, you know,
00:53:28high-level special teams player. Um, that's two that's twice now they've been burned by
00:53:32big punt returns at, at, at key points in the game. Yep. And just Joey Sly made a field goal
00:53:3944 yards. So he stayed perfect. That was good to see, but, um, that was special team. So not stay
00:53:44perfect. Come on. What? Oh yeah. He blocked the block. Oh yeah. The whole sequence last week
00:53:51blocked one. Yeah. How could I forget that? Which they kept, uh, they kept Austin Hooper
00:53:55at that spot. They did. Yeah. I was wondering if that, they might change that up. They kept him
00:53:59there on that, that left wing spot. We can say this, Joey Sly is perfect on kicks that get past
00:54:04the line of scrimmage. That's that's, that was going through my head. Okay. There you go. Um,
00:54:09it's all an improvement from last year's kicking positions. Yes, that is true. Um,
00:54:14all right. So any last thoughts, uh, on the game from last night or just,
00:54:20I think the, the, the best thing you can say about that game is a Patriots fan is it's over.
00:54:25And I don't think, like I said at the beginning, could there be more games like that this year?
00:54:32Yes. Will that be every game? No, I don't think that's entirely who this team is,
00:54:35but you see who their floor is. And that's where the concern comes from. And you hope that,
00:54:41you know, the coaching can elevate them above that floor regularly. Cause that's what it's
00:54:45going to come down to. I, I, this is what I remember when I said the first day we met with
00:54:49the coaches back in like January that I think everybody in the building gets what this year is
00:54:56and understands what this team is and the place they're in and that they're going to have to
00:55:01punch above their weight to be in just about any game they're going to play. Getting that is one
00:55:06thing, actually putting the actions behind understanding it as another. And I think
00:55:12that's just where they're at. Last night was that team playing to its level. I don't know that the
00:55:17coaching staff gave him a boost last night. Coaching staff is going to need to give him a
00:55:20boost if they're going to be in games. And, uh, for a short week, I get it. They did not handle
00:55:26their first short week. Well, I would say they failed that test. Yep. This is like a good,
00:55:32kind of real big first test for Gerard in this sense, right? Like that kind of just bottomed
00:55:36out for you. Now you have some time to readjust here and you're going to play a super bowl
00:55:41contender. I know they're pretty banged up out there in San Francisco, but you kind of got to
00:55:45get things back on, back on the track here. Well, I'll say this, like, regardless of what happens
00:55:50next year, first Thursday night game or only they only play one, but like going to the first night
00:55:54game, this is going to be a major talking point. Is it not? Look what happened last year when they
00:55:58had a short week. Like, that's just the kind of thing we're talking about. Yep. Um, all right.
00:56:03So that's your Patriots thoughts from the game last night. Uh, one more thing we can, you want
00:56:09to do a little college football before we go. And before we do that, uh, big college football game
00:56:16in, uh, Boston tomorrow night, Billy O B C red bandana night under the lights. And you can go

00:57:32I mean, Billy, oh, they should be Michigan state tomorrow. Yes. Michigan state's not,
00:57:37not a great powerhouse there in the, in the big 10, but, um, that's always a good game.
00:57:42Good energy there. Red bandana night, but, uh, anything else you're looking forward to
00:57:47in week four of the college football slate? Um, I mean, it's a, it's a pretty good slate. It's
00:57:52definitely better than last week. Last week was probably the worst slate of the year. I would say,
00:57:58uh, we're still building still not my favorite slate, Tennessee, Oklahoma should be fun.
00:58:02Uh, that game is tomorrow night. That's kind of the game of the week,
00:58:06Utah, Oklahoma state. They're calling it the uncle. It's two of the oldest quarterbacks in
00:58:11college football, the, the combined age of the start. So it's, it's cam rising for Utah
00:58:15and Alan Bowman. So cam rising Alan Bowman for, uh, Oklahoma state, both seventh year seniors,
00:58:22the combined, they're a combined age of 49. The combined age of the professional
00:58:28quarterbacks in the Colts bears game, Anthony Richardson, Kayla Williams is 44.
00:58:35So veterans going at it. Um, and that should just be really fun. Oklahoma state,
00:58:40one of the best offenses in the country up against a really good Utah defense and Kyle
00:58:44Whittingham, who's a really good defensive minded head coach. Um, so that should be a fun game.
00:58:50I'm looking forward to that. Um, I know there were a couple others, uh, I kind of have my
00:58:55list here in USC, right? I don't care about that game. Michigan sucks. Michigan sucks.
00:59:00It'll be fun watching them get rolled at the big house. But I just, do you think that's
00:59:04going to be a watchable game, Brian, for like 60 minutes? Uh, probably not. Well,
00:59:10we got an orgy. We got an orgy in the big house. That is true. People explain that one.
00:59:16We start getting emails. Sure. That's there. They're made a quarterback switch to it's Alex,
00:59:21Alex orgy, right? That's his first name. So new quarterback.
00:59:26Um, I'll, I'll tell you what I'm looking forward to our G three ourselves there,
00:59:30but I'll give you a little sick goes one. Um, Iowa and Minnesota,
00:59:34Florida, Rosendale, it's the name of the rivalry because the winner gets a
00:59:38like bronze full-size pig trophy. Um, really even rivalry. Uh, I think I was one, one more game
00:59:48and they've been playing since the 1930s, at least for the trophy they've been playing before that.
00:59:52Um, but so last year, this game, Iowa and I would one, I think 13 in a row,
01:00:00close, low scoring game. Of course, big 10 West Cooper to Jean returned a punt for a touchdown
01:00:06with like a minute to go to put Iowa up 17 would have been 1712 with the extra point,
01:00:13but the refs overturned it because they said that. So when he's running over to field the punt,
01:00:18cause it was like a low line drive punt and it bounced, you know, sometimes you're off balance.
01:00:22You like wave your arm to kind of steady yourself. They said that that constituted a fair catch,
01:00:27even though that's clearly not what it was. And they didn't think it was in real time.
01:00:31Nobody did because the entire play was run all the way through. Again, he houses the punt.
01:00:35It was an unbelievable return that comes off the board in, uh, Iowa, just nasty scene.
01:00:42Minnesota hangs on to win 12 to 10, um, heated rivalry. You're coming off of that game last
01:00:49year. It should be a close game. They're two pretty evenly matched teams. Iowa maybe has a
01:00:53little bit of an offense now, maybe. So there's that you get your guy, Ariante, you're seeing
01:00:59that one as well. Um, sneaky fun game at seven 30 on NBC. Yeah. All right. Um,
01:01:07another week of arch arch Manning in Texas. Yeah. They're playing ULM. I don't care.
01:01:11He's going to light up ULM. Oh my God. Arch Manning against the worst team in college
01:01:15football. I don't care. I'm still not an arch believer until proven otherwise.
01:01:19I was going to say, pay attention to Calvin banks, but yeah, it's Louisiana Monroe. So I
01:01:23don't know how much stock you want to put. It's one of those games where if Calvin banks has a
01:01:27really like one penalty, one pressure, you're like, Oh, I don't know about that. Um, does UCLA
01:01:33have anyone at Drusher? Cause that's Will Campbell's matchup. Yeah. I actually meant to
01:01:38look this up. I didn't watch Will Campbell last it was last week, but didn't people say he was
01:01:43struggling or did you say he was struggling? He had a couple individual plays where he kind of
01:01:49got South Carolina's passwords are awesome. Yeah. And he had like two plays where they got the
01:01:56better of them. They both now there was only two pressures, but they both happened to be like in
01:02:01the first 10 minutes of the game when everybody was watching. So I think people saw that, Oh,
01:02:05this guy turned it off. Right. Um, and also cause South Carolina was blowing LSU out early,
01:02:11missed a good, missed a good, uh, comeback. He turned that one off. But after that, he was good
01:02:16after that. He was good. And if that's his worst game of the year, he had a hell of a year. Let me
01:02:21put it that way. That's the worst game of the year. He had a hell of a year, but I do think
01:02:24that you are going to see those plays again when we get to the draft and whether it's Kelvin banks,
01:02:28people or people who want the Patriots take a receiver, you're going to see those plays come
01:02:33up in the replies. Like, well, what about this? He's not so great. Is he like, I'll show you,
01:02:37you know, it's nobody. There's no perfect prospect. There's no perfect prospect. And
01:02:44yeah, he missed the player too. Yep. All right. But I, I, I, I will say this,
01:02:49the gap through and we're barely in a conference play. That was Campbell's really only marquee
01:02:55matchup. I believe, uh, Florida state, I guess. And he played well in that game.
01:02:58He played well. He had penalties. We played well. Uh, banks, Texas still really hasn't played
01:03:02anybody. He was good against Michigan's. All right. So I guess they each have one
01:03:04mark. When does Tennessee play Georgia? Cause that would be, if we got Tennessee,
01:03:12you mean Texas McHale Williams. No, it doesn't. It doesn't Texas play Georgia.
01:03:19Yeah. You said Tennessee. Oh yeah. I meant Texas. Um, cause if we got Kelvin banks first,
01:03:24the Georgia front and McHale Williams, that would be awesome. That is that game is October 19th.
01:03:31Okay. So it's fine. There's very little overlap between the LSU and Texas schedules,
01:03:36even though they're both in the sec, which is annoying because we're not going to get a ton
01:03:39of, Oh, what they look like against the same guy. Um, but I will say the gap between banks
01:03:45and Campbell's not nearly as big as I thought it would be. It's really not. Um, I, I, like I'm
01:03:53open, the door's still open to me being a Calvin banks guy. By the time we get to the end of this
01:03:57thing and we start the pre-draft process. So that's not Sam right now. I still think, well,
01:04:01Campbell's a better player, but it's, it's up in the air. There's a lot of football left to
01:04:05be played. I, I, I barely penciling that in. I, it's, uh, still very much a take in development.
01:04:11Yeah. I haven't like watched enough. Like I've only really watched them in like lifetime. I
01:04:17haven't went back and watched them, but like, uh, banks athleticism just really kind of interests
01:04:23me. He looks a little more athletic than Will Campbell, but, um, still a long way to go for
01:04:28both of those guys and a lot of games. And then the whole pre-draft process, which is always a
01:04:32fun time with them. Oh yeah. We'll talk about that plenty. Oh yeah. So, uh, we'll wrap it up
01:04:37there again. Patriots fall to the jets. They get their butt kick 24 at three on Thursday night
01:04:44football. Uh, we will be back sometime early next week. I don't know. We don't have it settled yet.
01:04:50Monday, Tuesday, we're going to kind of take a step back and do a crossover with Mike and Taylor
01:04:56and kind of do a Q and a. Um, so we'll have something out on Twitter, probably asking for
01:05:02questions. So you guys can just follow Patriots, CLNS on Twitter and all of us at, excuse me,
01:05:08at I am Brian Heinz at real Alex Barth, uh, to submit those questions. Uh, and then we'll let
01:05:12you know when we're going to go live, of course, as always. So make sure you're subscribed to the
01:05:16Patriots press pass on YouTube here as well. And you can also head over to 95, the sports hub.com
01:05:22to read Alex's coverage of the game yesterday. And you can have the
01:05:25Pat's pulpit.com to read our Patriots coverage over there as well. So thank you everyone for
01:05:30tuning in with us today. Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you guys next week.
