00:00At the beginning of the movie, a woman is seen screaming with a knife to her neck, appearing possessed.
00:06She recalls a night when her father took her far away, telling her she was to be reborn, a purer birth to shed earthly desires.
00:15They were the Sears of their tribe, chosen from birth to protect the living from the spirits of the dead, called N.D.O.G. the Dark.
00:23Their forefathers had encountered these spirits and learned the words of the dead, which became symbols preserved in books passed down through generations.
00:32Some symbols represented peace, others death, but one symbol was forbidden.
00:37Their forefathers made a pact with the spirits to never cross into each other's world.
00:42For years, no one dared to use it, except her father.
00:46He sacrificed to protect many lives, knowing that one day the dark would come for him, and on the night she was to be reborn, they came.
00:55In 1998, in Delta State, Nigeria, Ash recalls that every fortnight, her father Obia would force her to understand the symbols, except for one.
01:06As she began to read that page, Obia stopped her and tore it, explaining that although she shouldn't be afraid, they still had to be careful.
01:14At that moment, they heard a female laugh, which frightened them both, and Obia demanded the presence to show itself.
01:22The voice began humming a song, but when he went to investigate, he found no one there.
01:27Scared, he started to recite prayers, and as Ash called him, he turned to find her eyes completely white.
01:34She pointed in a direction, and he saw a dark figure with glowing red eyes, and Ash returned to normal.
01:41He told her to rush into the prayer room before confronting the figure.
01:45Ash narrates that her father invoked everything he knew because he was never prepared to give up what the entity demanded, and that night, he did all he could.
01:54He tried to attack the entity, but it easily overpowered him.
01:58Another demon approached Ash, and at that moment, he realized that the sacrifice he made for his tribe might cost him the one he loved most.
02:06He offered himself instead of Ash, and as the demon moved toward him, he blew something on Ash, causing her to fall asleep.
02:13After a while, when she woke up, she found her father's dead body on the floor, and that's how it all began.

02:2420 years later, we see Ash with her team trying to control a possessed girl.
02:28Ash manages to overpower the girl and blows something at her, causing the girl to scream and writhe in pain as demonic shadows appear on the wall.
02:38Ash draws a symbol on her hand, places it on the girl's forehead, and commands the evil spirits to depart.
02:44After a struggle, Ash manages to expel the spirits from her body.
02:48During the process, one of their teammates gets his ear bitten by the possessed girl and demands double pay, so as a result, Ash will not receive her share.
02:57She reflects that the worst thing about her relationship with Marv is that she needed him, and he knew it.
03:03After this, we see a wealthy man named Magnus, who has donated a large sum of money to a school, and the principal of the school thanking him over the phone.
03:12Meanwhile, he receives a text from a girl named Sandra, stating that she has missed her period again and requesting him to call her back.
03:20However, he deletes the message and blocks her number.
03:24After disconnecting the call, he notices a strange wound on his arm, and only then does he hear whispering from the backseat, but when he looks back, he sees no one there.
03:33He then looks in the rearview mirror and spots a girl vomiting, but when he gets out to check, he finds no one there.
03:40Magnus returns to his car, and to his shock, he finds a possessed girl in the backseat, and the scene abruptly cuts to black.
03:49We then see a couple making out in their car, when suddenly, Magnus bangs on the window, pleading for help.
03:56The couple gets terrified seeing him, and Misha tells her man to get them out of there, but he tries to calm her down and tells her to stay in the car while he will go out to help that man.
04:06The man comes out and asks what happened to him and where he lives, to which Magnus says, Milton Keenis.
04:12The man says, let's just get him into the car and he'll call an ambulance, but suddenly, the face of the possessed girl appears before Magnus, causing him to flail and attack the air in panic.
04:23Frustrated, he cries out to the dark mother, questioning why this is happening to him, and in his desperation, he stabs himself in the neck with a knife, dying in front of them.
04:35We then see Darray Williams watching old videos of him and a girl on his phone.
04:40His sister Sammy arrives and he asks her about their mother, to which she tells him that their mother is well and spending a lot of time with Russell.
04:48She then asks if he will come for dinner tomorrow night, to which Darray asks when was the last time he spoke to their mother and Timmy.
04:55Sammy wonders if that means she won't see him again, to which Darray replies that he'll see her at the same time next week.
05:02Before she leaves, she hugs Darray and pleads with him to come to dinner for her.
05:07Next, we see Sammy with her sister Timmy and their mother Isioma having dinner, where Isioma shares that she and Russell are getting married after the elections.
05:17Russell returns from a call and tells Isioma that he has closed a business deal, noting that her prayers seem to work.
05:24He then notices that Sammy and Timmy are unhappy and asks if it's about his engagement to their mother.
05:30Just then, the doorbell rings and Sammy goes to answer it.
05:33She finds Essex police officers at the door, asking for Isioma.
05:37When Isioma comes to the door, the officer tells her that it's about her husband Magnus.
05:42Months later, we see Ash receiving a message from the bank, notifying her that her account is overdrawn.
05:48Someone then knocks on her door and when she answers it, Detective Holly introduces herself, mentioning that she has been talking to her partner Marv.
05:57Holly says she told Marv she would pay them as soon as she has the money and asks for Ash's help.
06:02Ash replies that she can't help, and suddenly, Holly gets possessed by spirits, saying,
06:11Holly then returns to normal and pleads for help again, but Ash insists she can't help and shuts the door.
06:17Meanwhile, Sammy and Timmy are terrified to find strange wounds on their arms,
06:22and as they try to comprehend what's happening, we see the same possessed girl standing outside their house.
06:30The next day, Marv visits Ash and insists she do a show as they are getting paid 10 grand per episode, with 12 episodes planned.
06:38He then gets a call from someone and tells her that she needs to pay a deposit,
06:43and as he tells her he is getting another call, Ash gets a vision.
06:47She asks, who's that? And Marv responds, just another deposit dodger, but this one reckons she knows her.
06:54Ash asks for her name, and Marv says it's an African name, but her last name is Williams.
07:00Ash asks if her name is Isioma Williams, which Marv confirms, and Ash reveals that Isioma is the reason she is in England.
07:08Later, Ash meets Isioma, and Isioma shows her the wound on her arm and explains that she started seeing Magnus' ghost in her house.
07:16Forcing her to move into her fiancé's home, Ash says she wants to help but will need to convince her partner, which will be difficult.
07:24Isioma insists she can pay, but can't afford what her partner is asking.
07:29She explains that it took everything to bring Ash here, and she has never asked for anything in return,
07:35to which Ash responds that she will see what she can do.
07:38That night, while Ash is watching TV, she learns that the alleged killer Holly has been found dead, and her victims were discovered near Falmouth Mountain.
07:48The next day, Isioma says they can't keep throwing money away at clinics in search of treatment,
07:53to which he asks if she thinks a witch doctor is going to make it all go away?
07:58He then suggests that it might be a new virus that hasn't been discovered yet.
08:03Later, Isioma's children visit her, and Isioma explains to DeRay that his father is gone, and all she wants is her son back.
08:12Isioma then says that the last time they were together was at their father's funeral, and that a lot has happened since then.
08:19She asks them to forget everything she said about Ash when she stayed with them, explaining that they were young and she was just being a mother.
08:28She asks them to have an open mind, as Ash might be their only hope.
08:32Marv and Ash visit Russell's house, where Ash draws a symbol on her car.
08:36She explains that the marks on their arms are certain of Nigerian deities, and they are used to mark their prey.
08:43Russell asks if this means an enemy is targeting Isioma and her children, to which Ash clarifies that the spirits need a reason to attack the living.
08:52Russell, skeptical, suggests that Magnus could have killed himself because of depression, to which Ash asks if Magnus tortured himself for hours before committing suicide.
09:02They come outside, and Marv angrily says that every hour she works with them, they're losing money.
09:08He then storms off, and Ash reflects that she was ready to let Marv go that day.
09:13She was prepared to draw a line, but she couldn't stop thinking if he was right, and she hated that feeling.
09:19The next morning, while Isioma is jogging, the wound on her hand starts to pain.
09:24She stops to check it, but as she does, she hears someone calling her name.
09:29Startled, she looks around and suddenly sees Magnus appearing before her.
09:33Terrified, Isioma tries to run, but the voice continues to call her name and laugh, and as she reaches the road, she spots a woman there, who disappears the next moment.
09:43That night, Ash performs a ritual and blows a powder at them, causing it to get into DeRay's eyes, prompting him to quickly leave to wash his eyes.
09:52Isioma goes to check on him, and he asks if she thinks some juju from that dead man's village is after them.
09:58Isioma replies that she believes it because she has seen it, to which DeRay questions how she can be so gullible.
10:05After a while, while DeRay is sitting outside, a girl approaches him.
10:10He takes her to Russell, saying she was kidnapped and needs help.
10:14Confused, Russell looks around and says there is no one with him.
10:18DeRay is shocked to see that the girl has disappeared, and before he can process what just happened, he spots her behind Russell.
10:25DeRay rushes inside to tell them that a woman just walked in, but Timmy says they didn't see anyone.
10:32Ash, however, notices a shadow moving on the wall.
10:35Suddenly, Sammy's arm begins bleeding, and Russell says they need to go to the hospital.
10:40Ash counters that the hospital can't save anyone, and suggests they stay by the shrine and try to stop the bleeding.
10:47Russell tells her to stop, saying this has gone far enough and that they are both hallucinating because of that stuff.
10:54Isioma tells Russell that this is not the time, and Russell insists that Sammy needs a hospital.
11:00But Sammy intervenes and says that she's feeling better now.
11:04Ash steps outside, sensing something strange, and as she does, the woman appears behind her, but disappears when she looks back.
11:12Ash then hears her name being called and notices the woman upstairs.
11:16She goes upstairs in search of her, where a door opens behind her, revealing the woman standing there.
11:22Sensing her presence, Ash draws a symbol on her hand and shows it to the woman, causing her to disappear.
11:29Meanwhile, Russell leaves the room to get a drink, and shortly after, Sammy also gets up and leaves the room.
11:36After a while, when Ash returns, she shows Isioma a book, explaining that she has never shown any of her clients this particular book.
11:44She reveals a picture of a woman named Aniyoji, who is called the Sword of the Afflicted by her worshippers.
11:52Isioma asks if this is the spirit they're dealing with, and Ash confirms.
11:56Ash then asks Isioma if there's something she's not telling her.
12:00Russell joins them, and Ash explains that Aniyoji was a warrior queen who was murdered by the people she loved most, including her husband, who was a former slave.
12:10And she emphasizes that Aniyoji is not just any errant spirit.
12:14Isioma responds that she has already mentioned Magnus had many enemies, to which Ash asks about her.
12:20Russell intervenes, saying that Ash has outstayed her welcome and steps onto the spot where the ritual was performed.
12:27He accuses her of being a fraud, but Isioma questions if he has ever considered that Ash might be right, and asks what if Magnus was actually killed.
12:36Russell insists that Magnus killed himself, and Isioma asks if he has ever wondered why she never told him what happened earlier today, because it would have made no sense to him.
12:46Russell then tries to push Ash out, but she asserts that she will leave when she is done, and that he will get a full refund, as she doesn't need his money to help them.
13:05She pleads with them not to let her do this.
13:08Ash says she needs to speak to her, but Sammy turns to her mother, asking if she's ready to see her bleed.
13:14Ash addresses Anioji directly, stating that she knows who she is, and questioning why she is targeting this family.
13:21But Anioji begins singing a haunting song, shocking everyone.
13:25Ash asks what they did, but Anioji tells DeRay that he needs to leave immediately.
13:30In response, Ash shows Anioji a cymbal, and starts reciting spells.
13:35Anioji becomes violent, but DeRay and Russell manage to grab Sammy and lay her down on the floor,
13:41prompting Ash to place her hand on Sammy's forehead, and continue reciting spells.
13:46Sammy screams in agony, but Ash persists until she finally manages to expel Anioji from Sammy's body.
13:54Ash tells them that that song was a prayer to the spirit that was responsible for all of this.
13:59They then notice that their wounds are bleeding, and Ash hears whispers, and that song again.
14:05She warns Russell to step away from Sammy, but before he can understand, Anioji attacks him and bites his neck.
14:12As Isiyoma goes to check on Russell, Sammy gets up, and Anioji makes her slit her throat with a knife, causing her to collapse.
14:20DeRay tries to call an ambulance, but finds that his phone has no network.
14:25Ash gives him her phone, and he rushes out to make the call.
14:28After some time, when DeRay doesn't return, Timmy goes out to check on him, and Isiyoma hears her scream.
14:35Isiyoma rushes out to check on them, and during this chaos, Sammy and Russell die.
14:40Outside, Timmy discovers that DeRay has submerged everyone's phones in the wash basin,
14:45and when Isiyoma arrives, DeRay declares that they took him away from them.
14:50He then attempts to attack his mother with a corkscrew, and Ash intervenes, but gets knocked down by DeRay.
14:57DeRay then goes after Isiyoma, and stabs her in the leg with the corkscrew.
15:01He drags her away, and stabs her again, and when Timmy tries to stop him, DeRay grabs her by the neck,
15:08and despite Isiyoma's pleas, he continues to bang her head on the floor.
15:13He then takes off her belt, and begins to strangle Isiyoma, but just as he is about to kill her,
15:19Timmy hits DeRay with a golf club, knocking him down.
15:22DeRay tells Isiyoma that he saw Anna, and then he dies.
15:29Later, Timmy tells Ash that 5 years ago, her parents brought a girl from Nigeria legally.
15:35Her name was Anna, and she was their new house helper.
15:38As soon as she arrived, her parents seized her passport and phone, effectively ending her freedom.
15:44Anna worked tirelessly, and was treated poorly, and she sang that haunting song incessantly,
15:50a melody they could never forget.
15:52Magus had a disturbing weakness he tried to keep hidden, while their mother knew everything.
15:57Except that DeRay had a soft spot for Anna, and the feeling was mutual.
16:01One day, it was discovered that Anna was pregnant,
16:04and Timmy reflects that she wasn't sure what made their father angrier,
16:08the fact that Anna had slept with his son, or that she chose to keep the baby.
16:13As Anna endured the beatings, she sang, her voice growing weaker with each strike,
16:18and eventually, she died.
16:20They then buried their memories of Anna along with her body that night.
16:24Ash asks how many were there after she left,
16:27to which Isiyoma replies that there were 5, including Anna.
16:31Isiyoma admits she knows she doesn't deserve it, but pleads for Ash's help to save Timmy.
16:37Ash explains that the song Anna was singing is a prayer for help,
16:40known as Ibu Oji, Song from the Dark.
16:44She tells Isiyoma that when she lost her father,
16:47Isiyoma's father took her in, whilst the whole village abandoned her,
16:51and when they threatened him because of her, she brought her here.
16:54Ash says she will help her, but this is her debt repaid.
16:58Ash accidentally cuts the protective arc, and soon after, Isiyoma hears her name being called.
17:04Ash also senses Annoji's presence, and tells Timmy that they need to get Isiyoma out of there immediately.
17:10As they try to move her, Ash warns Timmy that Annoji has taken hold of Isiyoma,
17:15and she pulls Timmy back to protect her.
17:18Annoji makes Isiyoma grab a knife and repeatedly stab herself until she dies.
17:23Timmy rushes to her mom crying, but only then does she also see Annoji there,
17:28and gets terrified seeing her.
17:30Ash asks her to go into her car and don't run, or she will find her.
17:34Ash confronts Annoji and starts reciting spells.
17:37Annoji advances towards her, but Ash quickly cuts her hand to create a symbol,
17:42and as Annoji tries to attack, Ash declares that she has done enough.
17:47However, nothing happens to Annoji, and she asks Ash why harm herself.
17:52Ash tells Annoji to leave Timmy alone, asserting that she is not her father,
17:57to which Annoji cryptically says,
18:00Wherever the head goes, the body follows, and along with all that, give it life.
18:05She then disappears, and the scene shifts to Timmy sitting in Ash's car.
18:10Suddenly, Annoji appears and climbs into the car,
18:13but only then Ash arrives and suggests a plan to confront her.
18:17Annoji grabs Ash and throws her aside, then attempts to enter the car.
18:21However, due to the symbol Ash has drawn, Annoji is unable to enter.
18:26Furious, Annoji turns to Ash and warns her that she has been warned.
18:31She then compels Ash to grab a knife and slit her own throat,
18:35but Ash struggles against the control, reciting spells and recalling her childhood,
18:40particularly the forbidden symbol she was never allowed to learn.
18:44As she repeats the word associated with that symbol,
18:47Annoji's spirit weakens and loses control over Ash.
18:51Ash finds herself in the spirit world, where she sees her father's spirit,
18:55but as she reaches out to him, she is dragged away by bloody hands.
19:00She then wakes up in a forest, where she encounters her father again.
19:04He tells her that he warned her not to come here,
19:07and then stabs her with a knife, expressing sorrow for his actions.
19:11Ash then wakes up back in the real world, shaken by the experience.
19:15Ash rushes to the car and urgently tells Timmy to drive, causing Annoji to become furious.
19:21As they drive away, Timmy suddenly slams on the brakes,
19:24when Annoji appears in the middle of the road.
19:27Annoji, now covered in blood, screams at them, and Ash insists that Timmy drives,
19:32and despite the terror, Timmy accelerates, forcing them to flee from the relentless spirit.
19:40The next morning, Ash and Timmy arrive at the forest,
19:43hoping that finding Anna's grave might provide a way out of their torment.
19:47They dig up the ground and uncover Anna's remains, prompting Ash to prepare for a ritual.
19:52She begs Anna's spirit, explaining that the monster who took her life, along with her child, is gone.
19:59She reminds Anna that Dare, the one she loved, is also dead, and this is not the peace she sought.
20:06Ash appeals to Anna to think of her father, who deserves to know her fate,
20:10and where she is buried, and that keeping Timmy alive will help achieve that.
20:15She pleads for Anna's peace now that vengeance has been fulfilled.
20:19Suddenly, Timmy attacks Ash from behind, knocking her down,
20:23and when Ash regains consciousness, she finds Timmy under the control of the spirit.
20:29Timmy then attempts to kill her, but Ash defends herself by knocking her down with a stone.
20:34Timmy gets up and Ash tries to flee from there, and Annoji commands Timmy to kill Ash, and then she can also die.
20:41Timmy picks up a knife and runs after Ash to kill her, but Ash manages to hide behind a tree.
20:46As Ash continues to wander through the forest, she encounters Annoji once again, with Timmy on the other side.
20:53Timmy lunges at her to attack and kill her, but a fierce struggle ensues as Ash fights to stop her.
20:59Just when it seems like Ash might not be able to hold her own,
21:03Anna's spirit suddenly approaches Timmy, stopping her, and saying that they have done enough.
21:08Annoji protests, claiming that she hasn't finished yet, to which Anna says she has gone too far.
21:14Enraged, Annoji screams, expressing her frustration, and says everything she has done for her.
21:20Then, her body begins to burn, and she disappears in a dramatic explosion of energy.
21:26Anna says Dore wasn't supposed to die, and insists that Ash must inform her father about what happened.
21:33She then thanks Ash, and Timmy, deeply remorseful, apologizes to Anna, who vanishes without another word.
21:40As they return to the city, Ash tells Timmy that the police station is just 10 minutes down the road.
21:45She reassures Timmy that she is making the right choice, emphasizing that Timmy is not responsible for the events, but her father.
21:53Months later, Timmy has realized that her abilities are a gift, not a curse.
21:58She has finally embraced them with pride and gratitude, much like her father did.
22:03With old debts repaid and a new life ahead of her, she believes she is ready to share her voice.
22:09She is prepared to destroy old bridges and build new ones, and she is ready to do it on her own, especially without Marv.
22:17And above all, she is ready to be human.
22:20As she is dealing with a client, she looks out the window and finds a boy possessed by a dark spirit, and the movie ends here.
