When the Vatican observatory Priest sees a comet, the Church is sure that it confirms the eve of Armageddon. Meanwhile, the U.S. President's godson, Robert Thorn (Liev Schreiber), is informed in the maternity ward in Rome by Father Spiletto (Giovanni Lombardo Radice) that his wife Katherine (Julia Stiles) has just lost their baby and will not be able to get pregnant again. Spiletto suggests to Robert that another newborn child, whose mother has died, could be the substitute for his son, and Robert accepts the child and names him Damien. Robert is promoted to ambassador in London after a tragic accident. When Damien's nanny (Amy Huck) commits suicide during his birthday party, a substitute, Mrs. Baylock (Mia Farrow), comes to work and live with the family. Through the years, Katherine realizes that Damien is evil, while Robert is contacted by Father Brennan (Pete Postlethwaite), who tells him that Damien is the son of the devil. When the Priest dies in a bizarre accident, photographer Keith Jennings (David Thewlis) shows evidence to Robert that the boy is the Antichrist. They travel to the town of Megiddo to learn how the boy can be stopped

00:00At the beginning of the movie, a priest observes comets streaking across the sky, which unsettles
00:05him.
00:06A convention called the Book of Revelation read, allowed the angels' trumpets of Armageddon
00:11paired with real-life disasters, signifying the completion of each stage.
00:16The Challenger explosion, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 tsunami, and
00:22the fall of the Twin Towers are each cited.
00:24The comet's arrival is the latest sign the world is on the eve of Armageddon.
00:29Next, we see American diplomat Robert Thorne being informed that his son was stillborn,
00:35but his wife Catherine doesn't know about it.
00:37Saddened by the news, Thorne listens as Father Spoleto explains that his wife suffered damage
00:43to her womb, and might not be able to become a mother.
00:46Father Spoleto tells Robert that he must accept God's plan, and suggests that he adopt an
00:51orphaned newborn, naming him Damien.
00:55Robert and Catherine raise the boy, and Robert's career ascends over the next five years.
01:00One day, Robert informs his wife that Stephen has been made ambassador to Great Britain,
01:05and he has appointed him as his deputy, so they are moving to London.
01:09Later that evening, Stephen gets stuck in traffic.
01:12When he glances at the time, which reads 6-6-6, a fuel tank suddenly crashes into his car.
01:19Fuel spills from the tank, and a nearby cigarette butt ignites the fuel, causing a massive explosion
01:25that engulfs the car in flames.
01:27Three months later, Robert has become an ambassador, and has settled with his family in a large
01:32estate just outside London.
01:35Next, we see Damien's birthday being celebrated, where his nanny notices a black dog staring
01:41intently at her.
01:43Sometime later, the nanny climbs up to the roof of the house, calls out to Damien, and
01:48tells him to look at her.
01:49She then declares that it's all for him before jumping and hanging herself.
01:53The horrifying scene causes panic, and a stampede among the guests.
01:58The next day, Robert is approached by Father Brennan, who urgently tells him that they
02:03don't have much time, and must accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their savior.
02:08Robert, confused, says he thinks there's been some mistake.
02:11Brennan insists that he has killed before, and will continue to kill until everything
02:16that belongs to Robert is his.
02:18Robert, still bewildered, begins to leave, but Brennan calls out, revealing that he was
02:23at the hospital the night Robert's son was born.
02:26Intrigued, Robert returns and asks what he knows about his son, to which Brennan gravely
02:32replies that he witnessed the birth, and saw its mother, and its mother is a jackal.
02:36Stunned and disbelieving, Robert calls for a sergeant and asks him to escort Brennan
02:42out of the building.
02:43As Brennan is led away, he desperately pleads with Robert to accept the Lord Jesus each
02:48day, insisting it is the only way to salvation.
02:51Later, when Robert returns home, a new nanny named Mrs. Bailock arrives for an interview.
02:57Catherine takes her to meet Damien, but the house phone rings and Catherine leaves them
03:01alone.
03:02As she departs, Bailock introduces herself to Damien and says she is there to protect
03:07him.
03:08Meanwhile, photographer Keith Jennings finds that several of his photographs contain mysterious
03:12omens.
03:13The next day, Catherine asks Mrs. Bailock where Damien is, as she had asked her to have
03:18him dressed and ready.
03:20Bailock replies that Damien is not feeling well, and she doesn't think it's a good
03:24idea for him to attend the ceremony.
03:27However, Catherine instructs her to get him ready, and in the car within five minutes.
03:31Now on the way, as they pass by the church, Robert and Catherine notice Damien becoming
03:37very agitated.
03:38Suddenly, Damien begins to have visions that trigger extreme aggression, and he starts
03:43screaming and scratching his mother's face, attacking her violently.
03:48Later that evening, Catherine tells Robert that Damien has never been sick a day in his
03:52life, and that this is quite unusual.
03:55Robert dismisses her concerns, saying that there is nothing unusual, and that Damien
04:00is just a little boy who got scared.
04:03Later, Catherine is shocked to see her wrist bleeding, and she then finds Damien standing
04:08in front of her, wearing a strange mask.
04:11However, suddenly, she wakes up realizing it was just a nightmare.
04:15A while later, Robert goes to Damien's room to check on him, but is startled to hear growling,
04:21and is terrified to see a Rottweiler in the room.
04:25Just then, Bailock comes in and calms down the dog, and when Robert asks her who gave
04:30her permission to bring a dog into the house, she replies that it will make a good watchdog,
04:35and that he will be grateful for it during his long trips away.
04:39Robert firmly tells her that if they ever need a dog, he will choose one himself.
04:43However, she insists that Damien has grown quite fond of the dog.
04:49Robert reiterates that tomorrow morning, she will call the RSPCA and have the dog removed.
04:54A few days later, Catherine visits a zoo with Damien, where she notices that all the other
04:59children are avoiding Damien.
05:01She goes to him and asks why the other kids don't want to play with him, to which he
05:06says they are afraid.
05:07Catherine observes that even the animals seem frightened by Damien's presence, and as she
05:12starts to take him away, a gorilla becomes violent upon seeing Damien, and tries to break
05:17the glass of its enclosure, and the sudden commotion causes a stampede, creating chaos
05:22in the zoo.
05:24That evening, Catherine shares the zoo incident with Robert, expressing her concern that something
05:29is unsettling about Damien.
05:31After a few days, Father Brennan approaches Robert, and urgently tells him to meet him
05:35tomorrow for the last time at Bishop's Park.
05:38He warns Robert that his wife is in grave danger, and insists that she will die if he
05:43doesn't come.
05:44As Brennan leaves, Keith clicks his photos.
05:47Meanwhile, Catherine senses Damien standing behind her, but when she turns to look, no
05:52one is there.
05:53Suddenly, she sees a vision of a red-hooded jackal skeleton, but it turns out to be a
05:58The next day, Robert meets Father Brennan, who urges him to go to Megiddo in the walled
06:03city of Jezreel to find a man named Bugenhagen, the only one who knows how the child must
06:09die.
06:10Brennan explains that Robert's son is the devil's child.
06:13He reveals that Robert's wife is pregnant, and Damien will kill the unborn child, then
06:18his wife, and finally Robert, to inherit everything.
06:21Robert, confused and upset, demands that Brennan stay away from his family.
06:27As Robert leaves, Brennan ominously declares that he will see him in hell, and they will
06:32spend eternity together.
06:34Just then, a person in a red hood runs across the street, startling Brennan.
06:38Fear overtakes him, and he starts running away.
06:41He manages to reach the church, but as he tries to enter, the door locks automatically.
06:47Suddenly, lightning strikes a pole, causing it to break and fall.
06:51Tragically, the falling pole impales Father Brennan, resulting in his immediate demise.
06:57The next day, Catherine informs Robert that she is pregnant and intends to have an abortion.
07:03Robert suggests they discuss it further, but Catherine insists that she does not want to
07:07have any more children.
07:09As Robert comes in, he notices an email on his computer, and when he checks it, he is
07:14shocked to see news about Father Brennan.
07:17Robert meets with Dr. Greer, and expresses concerns about Catherine's stress, particularly
07:22regarding their son Damien.
07:24Suggesting that it might be why she's hesitant about having another child, Greer explains
07:28that Catherine may have fantasies that Damien is evil, and that he's not truly hers.
07:34He advises Robert that if he wants to help his wife, he should seriously consider an
07:38abortion.
07:39However, Robert firmly states that they will not be having an abortion, as he believes
07:44they need this child.
07:46Meanwhile, Damien approaches Catherine on his scooter, and hits the chair on which she
07:50is standing.
07:52This causes her to lose her balance, and she hangs to the railing.
07:56She pleads with Damien for help, but he quietly watches as she falls and hits the floor.
08:01Robert arrives at the hospital, where he is informed that Catherine is severely injured,
08:06resulting in her miscarriage.
08:08He then meets his wife, who pleads with him not to let Damien kill her.
08:12Robert arrives home and encounters the dog outside Damien's room, growling at him.
08:17At that moment, he receives a call from Keith, who tells him that he wants to talk about
08:22him and Father Brennan.
08:24Robert meets Keith, who shows him several photos with peculiar rays of light on them.
08:28Then, he reveals the latest photos he took of Father Brennan, in which the ray is clearly
08:34visible and actually making contact with the body.
08:37He explains that he began investigating, and the coroner's report revealed that Brennan
08:42was ravaged by cancer, and was administering morphine injections two or three times daily.
08:48Keith then shows him that Brennan had a mark on the inside of his left thigh, and the biopsy
08:53confirmed that it was indeed a birthmark.
08:56Keith takes him to Father Brennan's house, which is completely covered with Bible pages
09:00and crucifixes.
09:02He tells Robert that the first thing he found was Brennan's diary, which is more about Robert
09:07than Brennan, and the last entry indicates that he was scheduled to meet Robert in Bishop's
09:12Park on the same day he died.
09:14He then shows him a clipping from an astrology magazine, detailing a comet that took the
09:19shape of a glowing star exactly five years ago, on June 6th.
09:23He then shows him a second clipping, which is a birth announcement from a newspaper in
09:28Rome dated five years ago.
09:30On the sixth day of the sixth month, he asks Robert if his son was born at 6am, to which
09:35Robert reveals that his son is dead, and that he doesn't know whose son he is raising.
09:41Keith offers to help Robert find out the truth, but Robert refuses, saying it's his problem,
09:47and begins to leave.
09:49However, Keith insists that it's his problem too, and explains that when he first entered
09:54the room with the police, he took several photographs and accidentally caught his own
09:59reflection in a mirror.
10:01Robert examines the photo and sees the same ray of light visible in it.
10:05The pair set out to investigate and discover that the hospital where Damien was delivered
10:09was demolished.
10:11After a fire five years ago, they then travel to Subiaco and meet Father Spoleto, who was
10:16badly burned in the fire, leaving his face disfigured.
10:20Robert asks Father Spoleto about the child's origins, mentioning that he told him he knew
10:25Damien's mother, and inquires where is she now.
10:29Spoleto writes Cerveteri on a piece of paper.
10:32Seeing this, Robert asks for its meaning, to which the priest explains that Cerveteri
10:37is an ancient cemetery from Etruscan times, located approximately 50 kilometers north
10:43of Rome.
10:44Both of them reach the cemetery that evening, and after searching for a while, they find
10:48the grave, and next to it is the grave of the child.
10:52Together they open the grave and find the remains of an animal inside, and Robert recalls
10:57that the priest said its mother was a jackal.
11:00Robert then opens the child's grave and finds the remains of his son with a huge hole in
11:05his skull, realizing that they killed him.
11:08Suddenly, they are attacked by a pack of dogs, but they fight back and barely manage to escape.
11:14Meanwhile, Mrs. Bailock visits Catherine in the hospital, and causes her to have an air
11:18embolism, which kills her.
11:21Robert then receives a call from the hospital and is shocked to learn about Catherine's
11:25death.
11:26Later, he tells Keith about Catherine's death, and expresses his desire for Damien to be
11:30dead as well.
11:31They then both go to Megiddo to meet Bugenhagen, who instructs Robert on how to kill Damien
11:37on consecrated ground with seven sacrificial daggers.
11:41Robert asks,
11:42What if Damien is not evil?
11:44To which Bugenhagen responds that he bears a birthmark, a sequence of sixes.
11:49Robert insists that he doesn't have it because he has bathed him and knows every inch of
11:53his body.
11:55Bugenhagen suggests that if it's not visible, then it must be hidden beneath the hair, and
12:00When Keith asks about the nanny, Bugenhagen describes her as an apostate of hell.
12:06Robert refuses to kill his son and runs away from there, but Keith takes those daggers
12:10with him.
12:11He goes after Robert and tries to explain to him, but Robert takes the daggers from
12:16him, saying can't he see how insane it is to kill a child.
12:20He says there is no devil, or god, there is only here and now and life, and that is something
12:26he would never take away from any man.
12:29He throws the daggers away before leaving, and when Keith rushes to pick them up, a worker
12:34above accidentally drops his hammer and strikes the sign, and Keith is suddenly decapitated
12:39by it.
12:40Robert takes the daggers and returns home, where he is attacked by Mrs. Bailock's
12:45Rottweiler.
12:46However, he manages to trap the dog in the basement.
12:49Following this, he goes to Damien's room and cuts his hair with scissors, and to his
12:54shock, he discovers the triple six birthmark.
12:58At this point, Bailock attacks him, and Damien begins screaming sement.
13:03Robert manages to fend her off, takes Damien, and brings him out of the house with him.
13:08However, before he could drive away, Bailock tries to attack his car with an axe, but Robert
13:13kills her by running his car over her.
13:15Pursued by the police, Robert flees to a church with the intention of killing Damien.
13:20However, before he can do so, he is shot dead by a diplomatic protection officer.
13:26As the Pope simultaneously dies, Robert's funeral is attended by the President of the
13:31United States, who holds Damien's hand.
13:34Damien then looks at the audience and smiles, and the movie ends here.
