00:00Langkawi's tourism will take a hit if the island is promoted as a Muslim-preferred destination.
00:08MCA Vice President Wee Jack Seng also branded the suggestion by Deputy Tourism Minister
00:13Khairul Firdaus Angkwan Khan as narrow-minded and lacking in foresight.
00:19He said the island is renowned as an inclusive destination,
00:22known for its duty-free policies and pristine beaches attracting tourists worldwide.
00:26Langkawi's Tourism
00:28By branding it as Muslim-preferred,
00:31Wee said this will diminish Langkawi's allure and lead to financial losses.
00:36On Monday, Khairul told The Dewan Rakyat that branding Langkawi as such could enable it to
00:40compete with other islands in the region for the upcoming VisitMalaysia year 2026.
00:46Wee urged Khairul to conduct a comprehensive market analysis so as to not come up with overly
00:50religious or conservative policies which could misrepresent Malaysia as close-minded,
00:55damaging the national tourism industry.
