00:00:00Among all the planets of the solar system, our Earth is unique, since it's the only one that has developed life.
00:00:07But what if we got a competitor? What if a second Earth appeared out of nowhere?
00:00:12Then there would be two different scenarios. The first is the destruction of both planets.
00:00:18The second has an unexpected but pretty logical ending.
00:00:21But let's start with the catastrophic scenario.
00:00:24The second Earth with the same conditions could only exist if it received absolutely the same amount of sunlight as our planet.
00:00:31The orbit that our Earth follows is perfect for getting the necessary amount of solar heat.
00:00:36If we were a little further away, the entire surface of our planet would resemble Antarctica.
00:00:42And if Earth were a little closer to the Sun, we'd all live in a huge desert inhabited by very few living beings.
00:00:49So, for the second Earth to be identical to ours, it would need to follow the orbit of our planet.
00:00:55Two massive objects can exist close to each other. The union of Earth and the Moon is a great example.
00:01:03But if the second object was as heavy and huge as our planet, there wouldn't be enough space for both of them.
00:01:10The gravity of two Earths would be a huge problem.
00:01:13The two worlds would collide because they would be pulled toward each other.
00:01:17This process would last for hundreds of millions of years.
00:01:20And, in the end, the two planets would transform into one giant world.
00:01:25And their remnants would be flying around the newly formed planet, resembling the rings around Saturn.
00:01:31Or, one of the planets would push the other out of its orbit.
00:01:35In this case, one of the Earths would hurtle toward the Sun and burn like a match in its atmosphere.
00:01:41It's also important to remember that Earth is moving at a speed of 67,000 miles per hour at all times.
00:01:48This is more than 80 times faster than the speed of sound.
00:01:51And now, imagine two huge planets that are flying toward each other at such a speed.
00:01:57Even a microscopic organism living in the mouth of a volcano wouldn't stand a chance to survive the collision of two Earths.
00:02:04Even the Moon would be torn to pieces by the blast wave.
00:02:08But let's imagine that Earth's twin is following another orbit, somewhere between Mars and Earth.
00:02:14Even in this situation, people's lives would change forever.
00:02:18By the way, the theory that Earth might have a twin appeared long ago.
00:02:22Scientists of the past believed that the second planet could be hiding on the opposite side of the Sun.
00:02:28Thanks to modern technologies and astronomy, we know this theory isn't true.
00:02:33Otherwise, our telescopes and other equipment would have already caught some signals from this planet.
00:02:38Scientists study space objects thousands of light-years away from us, so they would definitely notice another world in the neighborhood.
00:02:46But anyway, let's imagine that the second Earth does exist, and we've discovered it recently.
00:02:52The entire field of astronomy and astrophysics will immediately receive hundreds of billions of dollars in funding.
00:02:58The study of Earth's twin will become a priority goal for people.
00:03:02Experts will put forward hundreds of hypotheses about what the second Earth looks like and what's happening there.
00:03:08The planet is almost at the same distance from the Sun as we are.
00:03:12This means the weather must be the same there.
00:03:15Soon, scientists find out that Earth's doppelganger has liquid water and continents, but they aren't like ours.
00:03:22Their shapes and location are different.
00:03:24Most likely, life exists there, too.
00:03:27But what is its origin?
00:03:29There's a hypothesis that life on our planet appeared thanks to amino acids brought here by a meteorite.
00:03:35It's highly improbable that the same thing happened to another world.
00:03:39Life most likely emerged there in a completely different way.
00:03:43Perhaps the fish didn't get out of the water on that planet, and the first intelligent creatures appeared in the ocean.
00:03:50These could be amphibians with scales and fins, or octopus-like monsters with huge tentacles.
00:03:56Fish on the second Earth could have come out of the water and grown limbs.
00:04:00But what if they didn't like walking on the ground?
00:04:03Then this world might be inhabited by intelligent bird people.
00:04:07Or life could have originated deep in the soil.
00:04:11Then evolution would create humanoid moles or highly developed worms.
00:04:16To find out for sure, scientists send a rover there.
00:04:20A similar mission to Mars was a success, so there shouldn't be any problems with this one.
00:04:25People on Earth are waiting.
00:04:27What will the rover find on the other side?
00:04:30It will take several years for the ship to get there.
00:04:34Strangely, two days after the launch, it returns.
00:04:38But wait, this is not our space probe!
00:04:41All this time, the inhabitants of the second Earth have been watching our planet, too.
00:04:46At one point, they also sent a probe.
00:04:49It's made of the same materials as ours.
00:04:51It has a camera and a recording device.
00:04:54But people are worried because the rover looks similar to a mechanical spider.
00:04:59Can it be that giant tarantulas live in that world?
00:05:03Scientists understand that we need to communicate.
00:05:06We send our guests a radio signal with some information about our civilization.
00:05:10They catch this message and send their own.
00:05:13It contains strange symbols that resemble scratches.
00:05:17Linguists all over the world are trying to decipher it.
00:05:20Meanwhile, astronomers send the guests a recording of human speech.
00:05:24A few days later, our satellites catch a message from our space neighbors with their voices.
00:05:30Scientists are about to play the recording.
00:05:32The whole world is listening with bated breath.
00:05:34And...
00:05:36It's a growl.
00:05:37A terrible and absolutely incomprehensible growl.
00:05:41It has pauses and an unusual rhythm.
00:05:44But it's nothing resembling human speech.
00:05:47The whole planet is panicking.
00:05:49Countries are preparing for an invasion.
00:05:51The most important thing now is to build shields to protect the planet.
00:05:55No one can decrypt the message.
00:05:57It's possible that our neighbors can't understand us either.
00:06:00People make a last attempt to establish some contact.
00:06:04We send a video to explain to our guests with the help of gestures and signs
00:06:08that we only want peace and collaboration.
00:06:11The answer doesn't take long to wait.
00:06:13Our satellite receives their video file.
00:06:16Scientists play back the recording.
00:06:18And it's shocking.
00:06:19We see dinosaurs in robotic suits.
00:06:23Life on the second Earth has been developing in the same way as on our planet.
00:06:28But the infamous colossal meteorite didn't fall there.
00:06:31Over millions of years of evolution, dinosaurs have become sentient.
00:06:36In the video, they're growling and pointing with their claws at the picture of our Earth.
00:06:41Then they start growling even more loudly and...
00:06:44Is it laughter?
00:06:46The recording ends.
00:06:47People consider this the announcement of the invasion.
00:06:51Several years have passed.
00:06:53During this time, scientists have exchanged messages with dinosaurs several times.
00:06:57And it seems we're beginning to understand them.
00:07:00It turns out that the reptiles also want peace.
00:07:03They say that their planet was once inhabited by humanoids similar to humans.
00:07:08But a massive flood wiped them away.
00:07:11Dinosaurs managed to survive and evolve into intelligent beings.
00:07:15It will take many years before people set foot on their planet.
00:07:18And when this happens, humanity will feel relieved, realizing that we're not alone.
00:07:24But what if there was no intelligent life on the second Earth?
00:07:27People would also be happy.
00:07:29We would know that we'd always have another home.
00:07:32Perhaps we'd start exploring Earth's twin right away.
00:07:35Or begin mining its resources to replenish ours.
00:07:39In any case, our lives wouldn't change immediately.
00:07:42Because that land would be too far away from our planet.
00:07:45Dozens of generations would pass before people begin settling on the second Earth.
00:07:50Our homeland planet would be losing more and more resources.
00:07:53So everyone would want to move to a new world.
00:07:56In the beginning, only the richest would be able to do it.
00:07:59But with time, space travel would become cheaper.
00:08:02People would probably invest a lot of money to build a paradise on the second Earth.
00:08:07If this happened, we'd be visiting this world during our vacation.
00:08:10To breathe fresh air and enjoy nature.
00:08:13In any case, the human population would grow.
00:08:16This means that sooner or later, the second Earth would become as loaded as the first one.
00:08:21And then, people would start searching for a new home among the stars.
00:08:25By the way, if any life exists on a planet similar to ours, it's likely to look like octopuses.
00:08:32There's even a theory that octopuses came to Earth from some other world.
00:08:37Any animal has several evolutionary stages of development.
00:08:40For example, elephants and mammoths descended from one common ancestor 5 to 6 million years ago.
00:08:46Looking even further, almost all mammals evolved from one ancestor they shared with reptiles.
00:08:52Each species has been changing over millions of years.
00:08:55But not octopuses.
00:08:57They suddenly appeared on a family tree.
00:08:59From the point of view of evolution, squids would have to evolve into octopuses millions of years from now.
00:09:05But look, they're already here.
00:09:08Besides, octopuses are incredibly smart.
00:09:11Their genetic code is much more diverse than the human one.
00:09:14They may be visitors from another planet that is similar to ours.
00:09:18But of course, this is only a hypothesis.
00:09:22Many people would like to fly into space.
00:09:24Zero gravity, a stunning view of Earth from one side, and the boundlessly frightening black area from the other.
00:09:31Yeah, it's all cool.
00:09:33But don't forget that this journey can turn into a nightmare.
00:09:37Lack of oxygen, floating in outer space, and staying in a spaceship for a long time without understanding when you can return home.
00:09:44This last thing happened to a Russian cosmonaut.
00:09:48His stay in space is one of the longest in the world.
00:09:5133-year-old flight engineer Sergei Krikalev spent 311 days in zero gravity on the Mir space station.
00:09:59But that's not the most interesting part of his story.
00:10:02Sergei's long journey began on May 18, 1991.
00:10:06That day, he boarded a transport ship and went into space to the Mir space station.
00:10:12On May 20, the docking with the station was completed.
00:10:15There, together with another engineer, Sergei performed his space duties.
00:10:20They went on spacewalks several times, did repairs, took care of the station, and conducted scientific experiments.
00:10:27When you have company and a lot of work, living in space is not so hard.
00:10:31But things got worse on the day when Sergei was supposed to return home.
00:10:35According to the plan, the mission should have lasted for five months.
00:10:39A new astronaut was supposed to replace the old ones.
00:10:42The transport ship had finally docked with the station.
00:10:45But on October 10, only one astronaut returned to Earth.
00:10:49Sergei was left alone at the Mir station.
00:10:52He continued to work as the sole flight engineer of the crew.
00:10:55The station couldn't remain empty.
00:10:57They had to send someone to replace Sergei.
00:10:59He wasn't ready for such a long stay in space.
00:11:02He hadn't trained for it.
00:11:03But there was no choice.
00:11:05He couldn't just leave the station.
00:11:07One month passed.
00:11:09They informed Sergei that he would return home soon.
00:11:12But something happened that no one expected.
00:11:15They contacted Sergei and said he couldn't return
00:11:18since the country that promised to bring him home no longer existed.
00:11:22During this time, a big crisis began in Russia.
00:11:25The cosmonaut's return was impossible since no one had the money for it.
00:11:29Just imagine Sergei's condition.
00:11:32You were hundreds of miles from home in black outer space,
00:11:35completely alone,
00:11:37and have no idea how many days you have left to be there.
00:11:40The days passed slowly.
00:11:42Weeks.
00:11:43Then a month passed.
00:11:45It would have been much easier if being in space was not harmful to your health.
00:11:49But in conditions of zero gravity,
00:11:51the human body takes serious damage.
00:11:54First, it's a weakening of the muscles.
00:11:56The body doesn't receive the necessary load it needs,
00:11:59and the muscles are constantly in a relaxed state,
00:12:02leading to dystrophy.
00:12:04Yes, astronauts do a set of exercises every day.
00:12:07But this is not enough to keep the body in shape.
00:12:10In addition to muscles, bones begin to weaken,
00:12:13and a person becomes weak.
00:12:15Even after six months of such a life,
00:12:17any astronaut needs a long time to get back into their previous shape
00:12:21after returning home.
00:12:23Also, there's a lot of radiation in space,
00:12:25which is dangerous for people.
00:12:27It comes from several sources at once.
00:12:30The main radiation comes from the sun.
00:12:32On Earth, we're protected from it,
00:12:34thanks to the planet's magnetic field.
00:12:36Almost all radiation accumulates in the upper atmosphere
00:12:39and doesn't reach us.
00:12:41This accumulation of radiation in the atmosphere
00:12:44is also bad for astronauts.
00:12:46But the worst radiation is the galactic one.
00:12:49It comes from distant stars and galaxies
00:12:51and has a powerful effect on all living things.
00:12:54Radiation provokes many unfavorable conditions
00:12:57and destroys the body at the cellular level.
00:13:00Now, all spaceships and the ISS
00:13:02are equipped with shields and coatings that reflect radiation.
00:13:06But still, it doesn't provide 100% protection.
00:13:10In space, the astronaut's immune system changes.
00:13:13There are no conditions under which immunity could improve.
00:13:17It seems that there's nothing wrong with the absence of many bacteria and microbes.
00:13:21But the body's defense is weakening.
00:13:24A person becomes more vulnerable to microbes
00:13:26that can be brought by another astronaut.
00:13:28You also have serious food restrictions.
00:13:31Food in tubes doesn't contain as many useful vitamins
00:13:34as it does in natural products.
00:13:36Without vitamins, the body weakens even more.
00:13:40And sometimes, astronauts have to go on spacewalks,
00:13:43which aren't easy.
00:13:45A spacesuit is a huge and uncomfortable outfit.
00:13:49It constrains your movements and puts pressure on your body.
00:13:52Work in space can last up to several hours.
00:13:55During this time, you sweat a lot.
00:13:58One of the suit's filters may be broken,
00:14:00and all the fluid released by your body
00:14:02can spread throughout the suit and reach your face.
00:14:05Your eyes may water.
00:14:07The drops could interfere with your vision.
00:14:09Thousands of dangers can await an astronaut
00:14:11during a mission in outer space.
00:14:14Imagine that you do some repairs,
00:14:16and something goes wrong.
00:14:18The wrench jumps off the bolt,
00:14:19and it flies out, for example.
00:14:21You try to catch it,
00:14:22and unconsciously push off from the ship.
00:14:25You catch the bolt,
00:14:26but your body is already flying away.
00:14:28You have nothing to hold on to.
00:14:30But fortunately, you have a safety rope.
00:14:33Anyway, it can break off from your spacesuit
00:14:35because you attached it incorrectly.
00:14:38As soon as the rope breaks,
00:14:39your body changes the angle of flight.
00:14:41Now you're not just flying away.
00:14:43Your body is spinning at this moment.
00:14:45The Earth and black space flash in your eyes.
00:14:48So you get it.
00:14:50There are definitely risks,
00:14:51but nothing like that happened with Sergei.
00:14:54All astronauts spend many hours training
00:14:57to be ready for any troubles.
00:14:58They gain good physical shape
00:15:00and lose it during the mission.
00:15:02Add to this the psychological factor.
00:15:05Your body weakens.
00:15:06You don't breathe fresh air.
00:15:08You can't see your friends,
00:15:09and you don't have the opportunity to return home.
00:15:12A small layer of wall
00:15:13separates you from the cold vacuum of space.
00:15:16All this causes stress,
00:15:18which also weakens your immunity
00:15:20and harms your nervous system.
00:15:22Fortunately, astronauts also get through
00:15:24serious psychological training.
00:15:26They can maintain self-control
00:15:28in the most stressful situations.
00:15:30But when you're alone in space
00:15:32for more than six months
00:15:33and don't know when you'll return,
00:15:35you can get seriously nervous.
00:15:37Fortunately, Sergei didn't panic.
00:15:40He performed his daily duties,
00:15:42trained, and, of course, missed home.
00:15:45A month later,
00:15:46he received the same response.
00:15:48We can't bring you back yet.
00:15:49The country is in a difficult situation.
00:15:52He felt worse every day.
00:15:54His strength was leaving him.
00:15:56He wasn't sure if he'd be able to survive.
00:15:58The most interesting thing
00:15:59is the station had a capsule
00:16:01developed to return to Earth.
00:16:03But Sergei didn't use it
00:16:05because no one would have served the station.
00:16:07Russia sold the station seats
00:16:09to other countries.
00:16:10Also, they hoped to sell Mir.
00:16:13This meant that Sergei had to
00:16:15keep the station working.
00:16:17Sergei's mission lasted
00:16:18twice as long as planned.
00:16:20As a result,
00:16:21he spent 10 months,
00:16:23or 311 days, in space
00:16:26and set a world record.
00:16:28During this time,
00:16:29he flew around the Earth
00:16:30about 5,000 times.
00:16:32Finally,
00:16:33he received the long-awaited message.
00:16:35He's coming home!
00:16:36Germany paid about 24 million dollars
00:16:39for a ticket to the station.
00:16:41They were going to replace the astronaut.
00:16:43Krikalev got into the capsule
00:16:45and flew to Earth.
00:16:46Many people were waiting
00:16:47for his return down there.
00:16:49The cosmonaut landed
00:16:50and everyone rushed to help him.
00:16:52He looked very thin,
00:16:54sweaty, and exhausted.
00:16:56Four men helped him out of the capsule.
00:16:58They helped him stay on the ground,
00:17:00gave him a fur coat,
00:17:01and brought a bowl of broth.
00:17:03It seemed that such a flight
00:17:05would leave an imprint
00:17:06on his life forever.
00:17:07But the cosmonaut's mood
00:17:09was excellent.
00:17:10Two years later,
00:17:11he went into space again
00:17:13and became the first Russian cosmonaut
00:17:15to fly on a NASA shuttle.
00:17:17And two years later,
00:17:19he was one of the first
00:17:20to live on the ISS.
00:17:22In 2005,
00:17:24he made his sixth and last flight.
00:17:26He went to the ISS,
00:17:28where he spent about six months,
00:17:30after which he returned home
00:17:32on the lander.
00:17:33After this flight,
00:17:34he set a world record
00:17:36for the total duration of stay in space
00:17:38at 803 days.
00:17:40Only ten years later,
00:17:42someone managed to break that record.
00:17:44But that's a different story.
00:17:48You may think the Earth is pretty big,
00:17:50but the Sun makes up
00:17:51almost 99.9% of the mass
00:17:53of the whole solar system.
00:17:55The rest of the mass
00:17:57is made up by the planets
00:17:58and their satellites,
00:17:59asteroids, comets, gas, and dust.
00:18:03It's around 93 million miles
00:18:05away from our planet,
00:18:06but it keeps us warm every day.
00:18:09Its temperature is about
00:18:1010,000 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:18:12but the space surrounding it
00:18:13is still cold as ice.
00:18:15To understand this,
00:18:17we need to distinguish
00:18:18between heat and temperature.
00:18:20Heat is the energy
00:18:21inside some object.
00:18:23Temperature is something
00:18:24that tells us
00:18:25if that object is hot or cold.
00:18:28When the heat is transferred
00:18:29to that object,
00:18:30it makes its temperature go up.
00:18:32When the object is losing heat,
00:18:34the temperature goes down.
00:18:36Heat can be transferred
00:18:37in three different ways.
00:18:39The Sun does it through radiation.
00:18:41That means it's releasing heat
00:18:43in the form of light.
00:18:44Your body radiates heat, too,
00:18:46as infrared waves.
00:18:48That's why thermal imaging cameras
00:18:50will detect that you're in the room
00:18:51even at night.
00:18:53The hotter the object,
00:18:54the more heat it will radiate.
00:18:56The temperature only affects matter.
00:18:58Since space is mostly a vacuum,
00:19:01it doesn't have enough particles
00:19:02for heat to transfer
00:19:03in any other way
00:19:04than through radiation.
00:19:06When the heat from the Sun
00:19:07gets to an object,
00:19:08the atoms start absorbing energy,
00:19:10but the heat can't transfer
00:19:12since there is no matter in space.
00:19:15Those rare atoms and molecules in space
00:19:17will absorb the heat,
00:19:19and they'll simply stay that way
00:19:21while the cold vacuum will stay cold.
00:19:24There's a lot of matter
00:19:25inside Earth's atmosphere,
00:19:27so the energy of the Sun
00:19:28can transfer easily.
00:19:30But if you put an object
00:19:31outside of the Earth's atmosphere
00:19:33in direct sunlight,
00:19:34it would end up heated
00:19:35to 250 degrees Fahrenheit
00:19:38because it's matter
00:19:39made of atoms and molecules.
00:19:42The temperature of the vacuum
00:19:43is negative 454 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:19:47That means,
00:19:48depending on where you are,
00:19:49space can either burn or freeze you.
00:19:52The Sun isn't actually yellow.
00:19:54It emits light
00:19:55over a wide range of wavelengths.
00:19:57We can tell both its temperature
00:19:59and color by the peak
00:20:00in its spectrum.
00:20:02For instance,
00:20:03cooler stars will appear red,
00:20:05and hotter stars will be blue
00:20:07with yellow, orange,
00:20:09and white stars in between.
00:20:11When it comes to the Sun,
00:20:12the spectrum peaks
00:20:13at a wavelength
00:20:14we'd usually call green,
00:20:16but our eye perceives it differently.
00:20:18So, the shade of green
00:20:20in combination with other wavelengths
00:20:21from the spectrum
00:20:23is going to look white
00:20:24to the human eye.
00:20:26We generally see the Sun as yellow
00:20:28because our atmosphere
00:20:29scatters blue light
00:20:30more efficiently than the red one.
00:20:32During sunrise and sunset,
00:20:34there's more red light
00:20:35in the spectrum of the Sun,
00:20:37which gives us amazing sceneries.
00:20:40Sunspots are part
00:20:41of the Sun's visible surface
00:20:43that are on average
00:20:44way cooler than the Sun itself.
00:20:46They overlap with parts
00:20:47that have an increased magnetic field.
00:20:50These parts don't allow
00:20:51the release of heat
00:20:52to the Sun's visible surface.
00:20:54That way,
00:20:55the rest of the Sun's surface
00:20:56is three times brighter
00:20:58than those sunspots.
00:21:00That contrast
00:21:01makes them appear almost black.
00:21:04If we could take a sunspot
00:21:05apart from the Sun
00:21:06and place it somewhere
00:21:07in the night sky,
00:21:08it would be different,
00:21:09as bright as the Moon
00:21:10when we see it from the Earth.
00:21:12All the planets
00:21:13in our solar system
00:21:14spin in the same direction
00:21:16because they were formed
00:21:17from one protoplanetary cloud,
00:21:19except for Uranus and Venus.
00:21:22They have probably had
00:21:23some strong impact on them
00:21:25that made them spin
00:21:26in the opposite direction.
00:21:28But it's different with galaxies.
00:21:30They don't usually form
00:21:31the same cloud of dust
00:21:33and particles.
00:21:34Also,
00:21:35they're not randomly distributed
00:21:36across space.
00:21:38They come in filaments,
00:21:39dense slender strands
00:21:41of dark matter and galaxies
00:21:43with voids in between.
00:21:45Proto-galaxies
00:21:46are linked by gravitational forces
00:21:48in small areas of space.
00:21:50This is probably
00:21:51because of the distribution
00:21:52of dark matter
00:21:53throughout the Universe.
00:21:55The matter in the filaments
00:21:56moves in a corkscrew motion
00:21:58and goes towards
00:21:59the densest area.
00:22:01So,
00:22:02there might be a common direction
00:22:03galaxies tend to spin,
00:22:05but it's mostly random.
00:22:07There's a possibility
00:22:08we'll see a lunar elevator one day.
00:22:10Yep,
00:22:11a cable anchored
00:22:12to the surface of the Moon.
00:22:13It would stretch
00:22:14250,000 miles.
00:22:17We wouldn't be able
00:22:18to directly attach it
00:22:19to our planet
00:22:20because both Earth
00:22:21and the Moon
00:22:22are moving.
00:22:23But,
00:22:24we could keep it terminated
00:22:25high in our planet's orbit.
00:22:28Some researchers believe
00:22:29we could build
00:22:30such an elevator
00:22:31for a few billion dollars.
00:22:33The Moon has resources
00:22:34we could definitely use.
00:22:36A rare form of helium
00:22:37found there
00:22:38could be of use
00:22:39in fusion power stations
00:22:40on our planet.
00:22:42Also,
00:22:43we could take some
00:22:44other rare elements
00:22:45and use them
00:22:46in smartphones
00:22:47and the rest of electronics.
00:22:49So,
00:22:50after around 53 trips
00:22:51up and down,
00:22:52the elevator
00:22:53could pay for itself.
00:22:55The cable would be
00:22:56as thick as a pencil,
00:22:57but its weight
00:22:58would be around 40 tons.
00:23:00It could even be made
00:23:01of materials
00:23:02we already have
00:23:03here on Earth
00:23:04with no need
00:23:05to invent something.
00:23:06There could even be
00:23:07a combination
00:23:08of two elevators.
00:23:10A spacecraft
00:23:11would winch up
00:23:12an elevator
00:23:13from the surface
00:23:14of our planet
00:23:15to a space station.
00:23:16Then,
00:23:17it would be flung
00:23:18towards the Moon.
00:23:19Then,
00:23:20the elevator
00:23:21would finally
00:23:22lower it down
00:23:23to the surface
00:23:24of the Moon.
00:23:25Planets in our solar system
00:23:26have predictable
00:23:27and stable orbits.
00:23:28But gas-giant collisions
00:23:29could have happened
00:23:30at an early stage
00:23:31when a planetary system
00:23:32was still forming.
00:23:34In case of a head-on collision,
00:23:36two gas giants
00:23:37would merge.
00:23:38They wouldn't end up
00:23:39losing their mass,
00:23:40the materials
00:23:41in their gaseous envelopes,
00:23:42or the ones
00:23:43in their solid cores.
00:23:45Such a collision
00:23:46at a higher speed
00:23:47would cause the loss
00:23:48of the major part
00:23:49of the envelope gas.
00:23:50And very high speeds?
00:23:52Boom!
00:23:53Both planets are gone.
00:23:55It's different
00:23:56if it's not a head-on collision.
00:23:58If two cores
00:23:59manage to completely
00:24:00avoid each other,
00:24:01gas giants won't merge,
00:24:02but they'll lose
00:24:03some of the mass.
00:24:05Gas giants
00:24:06might even change their shape
00:24:07due to such collisions.
00:24:09Astronomers found out
00:24:10there's a galaxy
00:24:11extremely far away from us
00:24:13that looks similar
00:24:14to our Milky Way.
00:24:16We now see it
00:24:17as it was
00:24:18when the universe
00:24:19was only 1.4 billion years old.
00:24:22And now,
00:24:23it's 13.8 billion years old.
00:24:25It took over 12 billion years
00:24:27for the light
00:24:28to come from this
00:24:29faraway galaxy
00:24:30and reach our planet.
00:24:32This galaxy
00:24:33is peaceful,
00:24:34stable,
00:24:35and surprisingly
00:24:36non-chaotic,
00:24:37unlike all other galaxies
00:24:39that were quite turbulent
00:24:40in their early stages.
00:24:42To leave the Milky Way,
00:24:43we'd have to travel
00:24:44around 25,000 light-years
00:24:46away from the center
00:24:47of the galaxy,
00:24:48or 500 light-years vertically.
00:24:51Our galaxy
00:24:52is a disk of stars
00:24:53that spreads around
00:24:54100,000 light-years across
00:24:56and is 1,000 light-years thick.
00:24:59The Sun,
00:25:00its central star,
00:25:01is located halfway
00:25:02from the center
00:25:03of the galaxy
00:25:04and close to the middle
00:25:05of the disk
00:25:06in the vertical direction.
00:25:09We'd have to go further
00:25:10than its edge
00:25:11to get away from the halo
00:25:12that surrounds the Milky Way.
00:25:14Old stars,
00:25:15diffuse gas,
00:25:16and globular clusters.
00:25:18If you wanted to go
00:25:19even further
00:25:20to see the Milky Way
00:25:21in all its glory,
00:25:22you'd have to travel
00:25:2348,000 light-years vertically.
00:25:26At this moment,
00:25:27we don't even have
00:25:28a telescope we can send there.
00:25:30There are central stars
00:25:31that eat planets.
00:25:33Our solar system
00:25:34is stable,
00:25:35unlike many other
00:25:36planetary systems,
00:25:37so we don't have
00:25:38to be afraid
00:25:39the Earth
00:25:40or some other planet
00:25:41will change its orbit
00:25:42and go towards the Sun.
00:25:43But,
00:25:44at least a quarter
00:25:45of other planetary systems
00:25:46with orbiting stars
00:25:47similar to the Sun
00:25:48have a pretty chaotic past.
00:25:51In some of them,
00:25:52there are planets
00:25:53that used to move around,
00:25:54and their unpredictable migrations
00:25:56have disrupted the paths
00:25:57of some other planets,
00:25:58or even pushed them
00:25:59outside of their orbit.
00:26:01That means
00:26:02some planets probably
00:26:03have fallen
00:26:04into the central star.
00:26:06When that happens,
00:26:07the planet gets dissolved
00:26:08in the outer layer
00:26:09of the star,
00:26:10which means
00:26:11it gets eaten.
00:26:15So, once they explode,
00:26:17stars aren't supposed
00:26:18to come back to life.
00:26:20But some of the stars
00:26:21somehow have survived
00:26:22the great supernova explosion.
00:26:25Such zombie stars
00:26:26are pretty rare.
00:26:27Scientists found
00:26:28a really big one
00:26:29called LP40365.
00:26:32It's a partially burnt
00:26:33white dwarf.
00:26:37Now, a white dwarf
00:26:38is a star that has burned up
00:26:39all of the hydrogen,
00:26:41and that hydrogen
00:26:42was previously
00:26:43used as nuclear fuel.
00:26:45In this case,
00:26:46the final explosion
00:26:47was maybe weaker
00:26:48than it usually is,
00:26:49not powerful enough
00:26:50to destroy the entire star.
00:26:52It's like a star
00:26:53wanted to explode,
00:26:54but didn't make it,
00:26:55which is why
00:26:56part of the matter
00:26:57still survived.
00:26:58One of those zombie stars
00:26:59used to be a white dwarf,
00:27:01or just left over
00:27:02from an explosion.
00:27:04It gobbled up too much
00:27:05from another star,
00:27:06and, surprisingly,
00:27:07managed to explode
00:27:08once again.
00:27:11If you manage to go
00:27:12to the Moon one day
00:27:13and see fresh footprints,
00:27:15that doesn't mean
00:27:16there's someone else
00:27:17there with you.
00:27:18Footprints,
00:27:19or similar marks,
00:27:20can last for a million years
00:27:21over there,
00:27:22because the Moon
00:27:23doesn't have an atmosphere.
00:27:24There are no winds,
00:27:25not even a breeze,
00:27:26that can slowly erase
00:27:27those footprints.
00:27:29In outer space,
00:27:30you'd be strong enough
00:27:31to weld two pieces
00:27:32of metal together
00:27:33with your own hands.
00:27:34Okay,
00:27:35it has nothing to do
00:27:36with your strength.
00:27:37You could just
00:27:38press them together
00:27:39with no effort,
00:27:40and that's it.
00:27:41Oxygen in our atmosphere
00:27:42makes a thin layer
00:27:43on the surface
00:27:44of the metal.
00:27:45It's like a barrier,
00:27:46which is why
00:27:47such a trick
00:27:48is impossible on Earth,
00:27:49but perfectly logical
00:27:50in outer space.
00:27:55If you ever go to space,
00:27:57don't take off
00:27:58your spacesuit
00:27:59unless you're on a spaceship.
00:28:00Air in your lungs
00:28:01would expand,
00:28:02as well as the oxygen
00:28:03in the rest of your body.
00:28:04You'd be like a balloon,
00:28:06twice your regular size.
00:28:08Good news?
00:28:09The skin is elastic enough
00:28:10to hold you together,
00:28:11which means
00:28:12you wouldn't explode.
00:28:13Small comfort, huh?
00:28:16If you watch
00:28:17a very touching movie in space
00:28:18and start crying,
00:28:20your tears won't run down.
00:28:22They will gather
00:28:23around your eyeballs.
00:28:24Your eyes will get too dry,
00:28:26so you'll feel like
00:28:27they're burning.
00:28:28Any exposed liquid
00:28:29on your body
00:28:30will vaporize,
00:28:31including the surfaces
00:28:32of your tongue.
00:28:33Speaking of burning,
00:28:34there's one thing
00:28:35fire can't do in space.
00:28:36Fire can spread
00:28:37when there's a flow of oxygen,
00:28:38and since there's
00:28:39not any in space.
00:28:42If the fire breaks out
00:28:43in a rocket,
00:28:44you can simply turn off
00:28:45the ventilation system
00:28:46and voila!
00:28:48It can get more complicated
00:28:49if there's intense smoke,
00:28:51sparking,
00:28:52and material melting
00:28:53in conditions
00:28:54of reduced gravity.
00:28:55Regular foam
00:28:56fire extinguishers
00:28:57we use on Earth
00:28:58are useless here
00:28:59because they release
00:29:00foam randomly.
00:29:01Researchers are developing
00:29:02a fire extinguisher
00:29:03that will put out fires
00:29:04by using sound waves.
00:29:06The bigger the sound intensity,
00:29:08the bigger the flame
00:29:09they can put out.
00:29:10But the astronauts
00:29:11might end up deaf
00:29:12if their frequency
00:29:13is too high.
00:29:18A black hole
00:29:19is not like
00:29:20some starving monster
00:29:21that wanders around
00:29:22and has gravity so strong
00:29:23nothing can really escape it.
00:29:25When something
00:29:26comes close to the point
00:29:27of no return,
00:29:28which we also call
00:29:29the event horizon,
00:29:30it disappears.
00:29:32No way back.
00:29:33But quantum physics claims
00:29:35nothing can really
00:29:36destroy data.
00:29:37So it's a true paradox.
00:29:40Stephen Hawking
00:29:41was the one with the idea
00:29:42of how black holes
00:29:43don't really have
00:29:44event horizons.
00:29:45Maybe they have
00:29:46apparent horizons.
00:29:47Those trap things
00:29:48for some time only.
00:29:50After that,
00:29:51the trapped energy
00:29:52will somehow get away,
00:29:53but in a different form.
00:29:55When something goes
00:29:56into a black hole,
00:29:57it changes shape
00:29:58and gets stretched out
00:29:59just like spaghetti.
00:30:00It happens because
00:30:01gravitational force
00:30:02is trying to stretch
00:30:03an object in one direction,
00:30:04but at the same time
00:30:05squeeze it in another.
00:30:07Like a pasta paradox.
00:30:09Speaking of,
00:30:10a black hole
00:30:11that's as big as
00:30:12a single atom
00:30:13has the mass
00:30:14of a really big mountain.
00:30:17There's one at the center
00:30:18of the Milky Way
00:30:19called Sagittarius A.
00:30:21It has a mass
00:30:22like 4 billion suns,
00:30:24but luckily,
00:30:25it's far away from us.
00:30:27There are more than
00:30:2823,000 pieces
00:30:29of so-called space junk
00:30:30bigger than a softball
00:30:32floating above our planet
00:30:33at speeds up to
00:30:3417,500 mph.
00:30:37Woo!
00:30:38And there are
00:30:39500,000 pieces in general,
00:30:40some of them
00:30:41the size of a marble.
00:30:43Space waste
00:30:44is generally debris
00:30:45made up of natural particles
00:30:46called meteoroids
00:30:47and artificial particles,
00:30:49like things we make
00:30:50on the Earth.
00:30:52Meteoroids orbit the Sun,
00:30:54while the majority
00:30:55of human-made debris
00:30:56orbits our planet.
00:30:59For example,
00:31:00we launched almost
00:31:019,000 spacecraft
00:31:02around the world,
00:31:03from satellites
00:31:04to rocket ships.
00:31:05Even the tiniest pieces
00:31:06can damage a spacecraft
00:31:07at such high speeds.
00:31:09Galaxies,
00:31:10planets,
00:31:11comets,
00:31:12asteroids,
00:31:13stars,
00:31:14space bodies
00:31:15are things we can
00:31:16actually see in space,
00:31:17but they make up
00:31:18less than 5%
00:31:19of the total universe.
00:31:20Dark matter,
00:31:21one of the biggest
00:31:22mysteries in space,
00:31:23is the name we use
00:31:24for all the mass
00:31:25in the universe
00:31:26that's still invisible
00:31:27to us.
00:31:32There's a lot of it.
00:31:34It may even make
00:31:3525% of the universe.
00:31:37Dark energy
00:31:38makes the rest
00:31:39of the 70%
00:31:40of the universe.
00:31:41Scientists don't know
00:31:42much about it,
00:31:43but they think
00:31:44dark energy
00:31:45could be behind
00:31:46the increasing expansion
00:31:47of the entire universe,
00:31:48while dark matter
00:31:49slows it down.
00:31:51Dark matter
00:31:52doesn't interact with us
00:31:53in any way that we know of,
00:31:54nor does it interact
00:31:55with itself.
00:31:56If it did,
00:31:57we might be able
00:31:58to find dark matter galaxies,
00:32:00dark matter planets,
00:32:01or such objects.
00:32:03Now, astronomers
00:32:04have found the largest hole
00:32:05we've ever seen
00:32:06in the universe.
00:32:07It's the giant void
00:32:08that spreads a billion
00:32:09light years across.
00:32:11They found it accidentally.
00:32:12One of the research team members
00:32:13was a little bit bored
00:32:15and wanted to check out
00:32:16how things were going
00:32:17in the direction
00:32:18of the cold spot.
00:32:19That's an anomaly
00:32:20in the Cosmic Microwave
00:32:21Background Map,
00:32:22or in short, CMB.
00:32:25It's a faint glow of light
00:32:26that falls on our planet
00:32:28from different directions
00:32:29and fills the universe.
00:32:30It's been streaming
00:32:31through space
00:32:32for almost 14 billion years
00:32:34as the afterglow
00:32:35that occurred
00:32:36after the Big Bang.
00:32:37But instead of CMB,
00:32:39they realized
00:32:40there's a giant area
00:32:41way colder
00:32:42than they'd expected.
00:32:43The team started
00:32:44tracking radio signals,
00:32:46but there were no radio sources
00:32:47in that whole volume.
00:32:49That means there are
00:32:50no galaxies or clusters,
00:32:52and since it's so cold,
00:32:53there's no dark matter either,
00:32:55or regular matter.
00:32:57So it really doesn't matter.
00:32:58The giant void is empty,
00:33:00and researchers think
00:33:01it could consist of dark energy.
00:33:03Light can still pass through it.
00:33:05It's not the only void in space,
00:33:07but it's the biggest one
00:33:08we've found.
00:33:10The area around a star
00:33:11is habitable
00:33:12when it's not too cold
00:33:13or too hot
00:33:14for liquid water
00:33:15to exist on the planet
00:33:16surrounding it.
00:33:17Let's say our planet
00:33:18was where Pluto is.
00:33:20It's too far from the Sun,
00:33:22which means our ocean
00:33:23and big parts of its atmosphere
00:33:24would freeze.
00:33:25But if the Earth
00:33:26was in Mercury's place,
00:33:27we'd be too close to the Sun,
00:33:29and the water on our planet
00:33:30would evaporate.
00:33:32Such habitable area
00:33:33is called the Goldilocks zone.
00:33:35So you can see
00:33:36where planets are located
00:33:37and assume if they have a chance
00:33:39for life on their surface.
00:33:41But Europa,
00:33:42one of Jupiter's moons,
00:33:43definitely breaks the rule.
00:33:45It's outside of the Goldilocks zone,
00:33:47but still kept warm.
00:33:49Not from the Sun directly,
00:33:50but Jupiter and its moons
00:33:51that actually pump energy
00:33:53into Europa.
00:33:54Europa changes its shape
00:33:56as it circles around Jupiter.
00:33:58It's similar to tides rising
00:33:59and falling on our planet.
00:34:01Water on the Earth
00:34:02changes its shape
00:34:03as a response
00:34:04to the tidal forces
00:34:05of our moon.
00:34:06When the same happens
00:34:07with a solid object,
00:34:08the object is stressed.
00:34:10That's how you pump energy
00:34:11into that object.
00:34:12It's like you're playing
00:34:13racquetball.
00:34:14You hit the ball
00:34:15around a couple of times
00:34:16before you start playing
00:34:17like you're warming it up.
00:34:19You kind of distort the ball
00:34:20every time you smack it.
00:34:23The surface of Europa
00:34:24is frozen,
00:34:25but it has cracks in the ice.
00:34:27You can see ridges in the ice
00:34:28where there's a crack.
00:34:30Then, those flying chunks
00:34:31shift and refreeze.
00:34:33You'd see a similar thing
00:34:34if you could fly over
00:34:35the Arctic Ocean
00:34:36in the wintertime.
00:34:37There are ice sheets
00:34:38constantly breaking
00:34:39and refreezing.
00:34:40So, Europa can't
00:34:41completely freeze.
00:34:43Scientists think
00:34:44there could be an ocean
00:34:45of liquid water
00:34:46under the icy surface.
00:34:48Europa is not the only moon
00:34:49where this is happening.
00:34:51Another of Jupiter's moons,
00:34:52Io, is also warm
00:34:54because of such tidal forces.
00:34:56Io also has volcanoes
00:34:57erupting from within
00:34:58all the time.
00:34:59So, it's not only
00:35:00that the Sun warms
00:35:01the space bodies
00:35:02and pumps them with energy.
00:35:04Many experts agree
00:35:05the Universe might come
00:35:06to its end
00:35:07about 3 to 22 billion years
00:35:09from now.
00:35:10It's expanding all the time,
00:35:12which means it formed
00:35:13from a compact state.
00:35:15If it has a beginning,
00:35:16it's probably going to have
00:35:17an end as well.
00:35:19Yeah, I won't be around
00:35:20for that.
00:35:21One other popular theory
00:35:22says the growth
00:35:23will slow down
00:35:24and gravity
00:35:25will become
00:35:26the powerful force
00:35:27that will make
00:35:28the Universe shrink.
00:35:29That will lead
00:35:30to complete chaos.
00:35:31Galaxies, stars, planets,
00:35:32space bodies,
00:35:33they will all move,
00:35:34collide,
00:35:35and, you know,
00:35:36destroy one another.
00:35:37It's like the reverse
00:35:38Big Bang.
00:35:39Huge chaos,
00:35:40but this time
00:35:41everything collapses.
00:35:42Well, on that cheery note,
00:35:44always stay on
00:35:45the bright side of life.
00:35:52So, you fall right
00:35:53into the heart
00:35:54of the black hole
00:35:55and prepare
00:35:56for a sad end.
00:35:58Well, you don't have to.
00:36:00Falling into a black hole
00:36:01won't necessarily
00:36:02destroy you
00:36:03or your spaceship.
00:36:05You have to choose
00:36:06a bigger black hole
00:36:07to survive.
00:36:08If you fall
00:36:09into a small black hole,
00:36:10its event horizon
00:36:11is too narrow,
00:36:12and the gravity
00:36:13increases
00:36:14every inch down.
00:36:16So, if you extend
00:36:17your arm forward,
00:36:18the gravity on your fingers
00:36:19is much stronger
00:36:20than on your elbow.
00:36:21This will make
00:36:22your hand lengthen,
00:36:23and you'll feel
00:36:24some discomfort,
00:36:25rather significant
00:36:26to be honest.
00:36:27Things change
00:36:28if you fall
00:36:29into a supermassive
00:36:30black hole,
00:36:31like the ones
00:36:32in the center of galaxies.
00:36:33They can be millions
00:36:34of times heavier
00:36:35than our Sun.
00:36:36Their event horizon
00:36:37is wide,
00:36:38and gravity
00:36:39doesn't change
00:36:40as quickly.
00:36:41So, the force
00:36:42you'll feel
00:36:43at your heels
00:36:44and at the top
00:36:45of your head
00:36:46will be about the same,
00:36:47and you can go
00:36:48all the way
00:36:49to the heart
00:36:50of the Earth.
00:36:51This myth
00:36:52is busted.
00:36:53The next myth
00:36:54claims we can
00:36:55save the Earth
00:36:56from a giant asteroid
00:36:57with a big BAM!
00:36:58The familiar plot
00:36:59is that a spaceship
00:37:00lands on the surface
00:37:01of an asteroid.
00:37:02A team of astronauts
00:37:03quickly drills
00:37:04a hole in it,
00:37:05leaves a present there,
00:37:06and flies away.
00:37:07Then, BAM!
00:37:08As a result,
00:37:09the asteroid
00:37:10may break
00:37:11into several pieces,
00:37:12and continue
00:37:13on its way
00:37:14to Earth.
00:37:15Well, big chunks
00:37:16of the asteroid
00:37:17fall to our surface,
00:37:18causing it to
00:37:20a lot of damage.
00:37:21So, our mission
00:37:22is failed.
00:37:23Well,
00:37:24to save Earth,
00:37:25we need a really
00:37:26big BAM!
00:37:27Not only outside
00:37:28the asteroid,
00:37:29but right above
00:37:30its surface.
00:37:31When the boom
00:37:32happens,
00:37:33the force of the blast
00:37:34pushes the asteroid
00:37:35slightly downward.
00:37:36Even a slight change
00:37:37in trajectory
00:37:38would be enough
00:37:39to make the asteroid
00:37:40fly past the Earth
00:37:41in the future.
00:37:42Done!
00:37:43Oh, and if you made
00:37:44a big boom
00:37:45on an asteroid,
00:37:46you'd never be able
00:37:47to hear its loud sound.
00:37:49Yeah,
00:37:50we often hear
00:37:51the sound of spaceships
00:37:52and battle in space
00:37:53in the movies,
00:37:54but that's just a myth.
00:37:55Sound is a wave
00:37:56that spreads
00:37:57because of the
00:37:58vibrations of molecules.
00:38:00A person
00:38:01claps a few feet
00:38:02away from you.
00:38:03The sound wave
00:38:04begins to push
00:38:05the first air molecule
00:38:06next to the clap,
00:38:07then the third,
00:38:08fourth,
00:38:09and so on
00:38:10until the wave
00:38:11reaches your ear.
00:38:12So, to spread sound,
00:38:13we need molecules
00:38:14like air or water.
00:38:16In our atmosphere,
00:38:17sound waves spread out
00:38:18just fine,
00:38:19but space is a vacuum,
00:38:21so it's nothing here.
00:38:23You can clap your hands
00:38:24loudly there,
00:38:25but there just won't be
00:38:26any molecules
00:38:27that can vibrate
00:38:28and carry that sound.
00:38:30One more myth
00:38:31about asteroids.
00:38:32We need to fly
00:38:33a little farther
00:38:34than Mars' orbit.
00:38:35Whoa,
00:38:36we're in an asteroid belt,
00:38:37and we constantly
00:38:38have to dodge
00:38:39giant rocks
00:38:40and blocks of ice.
00:38:41We got in some
00:38:42dense asteroid cloud.
00:38:45Not true.
00:38:47The fact is that
00:38:48space is huge,
00:38:49and the distances
00:38:50are incredible.
00:38:51All the rocks
00:38:52and debris
00:38:53in the asteroid belt
00:38:54are only 4%
00:38:55of the weight
00:38:56of the Moon,
00:38:57so there really
00:38:58aren't that many
00:38:59of them there.
00:39:01To understand the size
00:39:02of the emptiness
00:39:03in space,
00:39:04look at the collision
00:39:05of two galaxies.
00:39:07There are billions
00:39:08of stars in each of them.
00:39:09If we mix them up,
00:39:10it's unlikely
00:39:11there will be
00:39:12any collisions
00:39:13even here.
00:39:15Another myth
00:39:16is that there's
00:39:17zero gravity
00:39:18in our orbit.
00:39:19Imagine you're
00:39:20in a huge box
00:39:2110 miles up
00:39:22in the air.
00:39:23Now, we let go
00:39:24of the box,
00:39:25and it starts to fall.
00:39:26You're falling
00:39:27simultaneously
00:39:28with the box
00:39:29at the same speed.
00:39:30And now,
00:39:31it's as if
00:39:32you feel
00:39:33zero gravity.
00:39:34Well,
00:39:35the same thing
00:39:36happens in orbit.
00:39:37The International
00:39:38Space Station
00:39:39is 250 miles
00:39:40above the Earth,
00:39:41and it's falling
00:39:42continuously,
00:39:43though not
00:39:44on the surface
00:39:45of the planet,
00:39:46but around it
00:39:47in its orbit.
00:39:48Its speed at this point
00:39:49is about 4.7
00:39:50miles per second.
00:39:52It could cross
00:39:53the United States
00:39:54from the west coast
00:39:55to the east coast
00:39:56in just 8 minutes.
00:39:57So, the astronauts
00:39:58there are
00:39:59experiencing
00:40:00the same thing.
00:40:01They're just
00:40:02falling with the ISS
00:40:03at that speed.
00:40:05Now, let's look
00:40:06at the Moon.
00:40:07It always looks
00:40:08at us with one side.
00:40:09This means
00:40:10the Moon
00:40:11has a dark side,
00:40:12and the sun's rays
00:40:13never get there.
00:40:14Well,
00:40:15that's a myth.
00:40:16The whole point
00:40:17is that the Moon
00:40:18is gravitationally
00:40:19locked to the Earth.
00:40:20There are days
00:40:21and nights there too.
00:40:22It's just that
00:40:23this rotation
00:40:24is perfectly aligned
00:40:25with the rotation
00:40:26of the Earth.
00:40:27So, whenever you
00:40:28look at the Moon,
00:40:29you only see
00:40:30one side.
00:40:31Although,
00:40:32there are days
00:40:33when the sun
00:40:34shines there too.
00:40:35So, it's not
00:40:36the dark side.
00:40:37It's the far side.
00:40:38And we even
00:40:39have pictures
00:40:40of this place.
00:40:41And there's one
00:40:42of the biggest
00:40:43stars in our
00:40:44entire solar system,
00:40:45the South Pole
00:40:46Aitken Basin.
00:40:47It's as wide
00:40:48as two states
00:40:49of Texas.
00:40:50One myth
00:40:51that turned out
00:40:52to be untrue
00:40:53is that people
00:40:54have never actually
00:40:55been on the Moon.
00:40:56This is the
00:40:57original spacesuit
00:40:58of the first astronauts
00:40:59who were there.
00:41:00Look at the sole
00:41:01of the shoe.
00:41:02Some people claim
00:41:03there's no way
00:41:04they could have
00:41:05left footprints
00:41:06like this there.
00:41:07Actually, they could.
00:41:08On the Moon,
00:41:09the astronauts
00:41:10wore extra boots
00:41:11over their suits,
00:41:12and their soles
00:41:13matched the footprints
00:41:14on the Moon
00:41:15perfectly.
00:41:16The astronauts
00:41:17didn't grab them
00:41:18when they left the Moon.
00:41:19They left a lot
00:41:20of stuff there too.
00:41:21They even ripped out
00:41:22the armrests
00:41:23of the seats
00:41:24of the lunar module
00:41:25to reduce its weight.
00:41:26Now, the total weight
00:41:27of human trash
00:41:28on the Moon
00:41:29is about 187 tons,
00:41:32including several
00:41:33lunar rovers,
00:41:34spacecraft debris,
00:41:35rocket stages,
00:41:36and lunar probes.
00:41:38That's like
00:41:39three Boeing 737s.
00:41:41The next myth
00:41:42is about summer.
00:41:43The hot season
00:41:44comes because
00:41:45the Earth approaches
00:41:46the closest distance
00:41:47to the Sun
00:41:48in a year.
00:41:49The Sun warms
00:41:50our planet more,
00:41:51and we all have to
00:41:52go to the beach.
00:41:53Well, not true.
00:41:55Let's draw an axis
00:41:56through our planet.
00:41:57It's slightly tilted
00:41:59on one side,
00:42:00and winter comes
00:42:01when our planet's axis
00:42:02is tilted away
00:42:03from the Sun.
00:42:05But over time,
00:42:06the axis tilts
00:42:07toward the hot star.
00:42:09Then its rays shine
00:42:10at such an angle
00:42:11that it gets warmer.
00:42:12It's true, though,
00:42:13that the Earth
00:42:14happens to be
00:42:15at different distances
00:42:16from the Sun.
00:42:17This is because
00:42:18our orbit is not
00:42:19a perfect circle,
00:42:20but slightly flattened,
00:42:21an ellipse.
00:42:22Normally,
00:42:23we think of the distance
00:42:24to our star
00:42:25as about 93 million miles,
00:42:27but that distance
00:42:28may be longer
00:42:29or shorter
00:42:30than 3 million miles,
00:42:31depending on which point
00:42:33in our orbit we pass.
00:42:35Another myth
00:42:36about the Sun
00:42:37is that it's yellow.
00:42:38Well, let's send you
00:42:39into space for this one.
00:42:41You look out the window,
00:42:42and it's white.
00:42:44The Sun only appears
00:42:45yellow to us
00:42:46through the filter
00:42:47of our atmosphere.
00:42:49The composition of the air
00:42:50and its thickness
00:42:51just distorts
00:42:52the light of the star.
00:42:54But stars do come
00:42:55in different colors.
00:42:57Cooler stars have bright
00:42:58orange and red colors.
00:43:00These are usually
00:43:01very old stars,
00:43:02older than our Sun.
00:43:04But young and very hot stars
00:43:05are bright blue.
00:43:07The Sun is about
00:43:08in the middle of the spectrum.
00:43:10You've also heard about
00:43:11how, if you take
00:43:12your spacesuit off
00:43:13in outer space,
00:43:14you'll blow up
00:43:15like a balloon.
00:43:17Well, our bodies
00:43:18are designed to function
00:43:19at atmospheric pressure,
00:43:20like outside.
00:43:22But space is a vacuum.
00:43:24Imagine a huge metal barrel,
00:43:26and we sucked
00:43:27all the air out from there.
00:43:29Add to that
00:43:30a temperature of
00:43:31minus 455 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:43:33and you have space.
00:43:35If you could get
00:43:36into those conditions,
00:43:37all the air pockets
00:43:38in our body,
00:43:39like our lungs,
00:43:40would start to expand.
00:43:42So you really could
00:43:43blow up like a balloon
00:43:44if it weren't for
00:43:45our elastic tissues.
00:43:47They stretch and bend,
00:43:48so you keep your body size.
00:43:50You'll have enough oxygen
00:43:52in your body
00:43:53to last about 20 seconds.
00:43:55Then your brain
00:43:56will begin to starve,
00:43:57and soon you'll pass out.
00:43:59So you won't blow up,
00:44:00and you won't even freeze,
00:44:02because you'll be in a vacuum.
00:44:04It doesn't conduct heat.
00:44:05For example,
00:44:06water conducts heat very well,
00:44:08and you feel cold
00:44:09from it instantly.
00:44:11But you feel better
00:44:12in the air of the same temperature.
00:44:14If you're in the vacuum of space,
00:44:16the super low temperature
00:44:17won't be a problem for you.
00:44:19Much worse is solar radiation.
00:44:21On Earth,
00:44:22we have a shield
00:44:23against radiation
00:44:24in the form of the atmosphere.
00:44:26It blocks the harmful rays.
00:44:28In outer space,
00:44:29you would be defenseless.
00:44:31Another myth
00:44:32is related to cell phones.
00:44:34People think
00:44:35that when you dial
00:44:36your friend's number,
00:44:37your phone sends
00:44:38a signal into space.
00:44:40There are a bunch
00:44:41of satellites out there
00:44:42that will pick up your signal
00:44:43and reflect it like a mirror
00:44:45right into your friend's home.
00:44:47No, not true.
00:44:48However,
00:44:49there are satellite phones
00:44:50in the world
00:44:51that work that way.
00:44:53But when you make
00:44:54a cell phone call,
00:44:55your signal is transmitted
00:44:56through a system
00:44:57of cell towers
00:44:58from one to another
00:44:59until it gets
00:45:00to your friend's phone.
00:45:04They say,
00:45:05somewhere out there,
00:45:06there's a pen
00:45:07that can work in zero gravity,
00:45:08at extreme temperatures,
00:45:09and even underwater.
00:45:11They say this pen
00:45:12can write on almost any surface,
00:45:14or if you turn it upside down,
00:45:16or when your surroundings
00:45:17are heated up
00:45:18to 570 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:45:20They say NASA spent millions
00:45:22or probably billions of dollars
00:45:24and almost a decade
00:45:25to develop such a pen.
00:45:27The problem with
00:45:28ballpoint pens in space
00:45:29is that they don't work
00:45:30in the conditions
00:45:31of weightlessness.
00:45:32The ink can't flow
00:45:33to the ball normally
00:45:35since gravity doesn't affect it.
00:45:37Instead,
00:45:38pressure is created
00:45:39in the ink reservoir,
00:45:40and pens start leaking.
00:45:42Some time ago,
00:45:43NASA used pencils,
00:45:45but wooden pencils
00:45:46were considered to be
00:45:47a fire hazard
00:45:48in most spaceships.
00:45:49All because,
00:45:50at that time,
00:45:51the atmosphere inside them
00:45:52was 100% oxygen.
00:45:54The need for a super pen
00:45:55was obvious.
00:45:57But whatever the rumors claim,
00:45:59NASA did not create such a pen,
00:46:01spending a fortune
00:46:02on the research.
00:46:03Its development
00:46:04was sponsored by
00:46:05Paul C. Fisher
00:46:06of the Fisher Pen Company
00:46:07based in Chicago.
00:46:08He spent over $1 million
00:46:10and almost 10 years
00:46:12to make a pressurized
00:46:13ink cartridge.
00:46:14It was supposed to allow
00:46:15space pens to function
00:46:16in zero gravity
00:46:17and other extreme conditions.
00:46:19Eventually,
00:46:20they got a pen
00:46:21that could write
00:46:22at a temperature
00:46:23of minus 30
00:46:24to 250 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:46:26which is really impressive,
00:46:27isn't it?
00:46:28The pen was patented
00:46:29in 1966,
00:46:31and one year later,
00:46:32after conducting
00:46:33several thorough tests,
00:46:34NASA started to provide
00:46:36Apollo astronauts
00:46:37with such pens.
00:46:38Interestingly,
00:46:39the rumors about NASA
00:46:40spending an insane amount
00:46:42of money on the development
00:46:43of space pens
00:46:44have been circulating
00:46:45for decades.
00:46:46They have been debunked
00:46:47many times,
00:46:48but they appear
00:46:49again and again.
00:46:51Many sci-fi movies
00:46:52can make you believe
00:46:53that everything
00:46:54happening in space
00:46:55is accompanied by
00:46:56some kind of a sound effect,
00:46:58which is a totally
00:46:59false misconception.
00:47:00In space,
00:47:01no one will hear
00:47:02you scream.
00:47:03You know why?
00:47:04There's no air in space.
00:47:06It's an almost
00:47:07perfect vacuum.
00:47:08And sound waves
00:47:09don't travel
00:47:10through a vacuum.
00:47:11They can't reach
00:47:12your eardrums
00:47:13and make them vibrate,
00:47:14sending signals
00:47:15to your brain.
00:47:16But it's a good thing,
00:47:17especially for astronauts
00:47:18on spacewalks.
00:47:19If not for the
00:47:20quietness of space,
00:47:21they would be
00:47:22constantly overwhelmed
00:47:23by the noise
00:47:24of solar storms.
00:47:25Here's another one.
00:47:26All comets
00:47:27have beautiful
00:47:28long tails.
00:47:29It's nothing but
00:47:30a popular misconception.
00:47:32In reality,
00:47:33comets are very difficult
00:47:34space bodies to spot.
00:47:36They usually spend
00:47:37large amounts of time
00:47:38far away from stars.
00:47:40There, in the darkness
00:47:41of space,
00:47:42they remain rather
00:47:43inactive and
00:47:44completely frozen.
00:47:45Comets only get tails
00:47:47once they come
00:47:48close to a star.
00:47:49That's when they
00:47:50start warming up.
00:47:51This process makes
00:47:52them form some kind
00:47:53of a cloudy atmosphere,
00:47:55which is called a coma,
00:47:56and a distinctive tail.
00:47:58The tail always points
00:47:59away from the star
00:48:00that influences the comet.
00:48:02It happens because
00:48:03the tail gets blown
00:48:04in the opposite direction
00:48:06by solar radiation
00:48:07and solar winds.
00:48:08That's why the tail
00:48:09can often be in front
00:48:10of the comet,
00:48:11not trailing after it.
00:48:13Now, let's look
00:48:14at a light-year.
00:48:15This very notion
00:48:16makes us believe
00:48:17we speak about time here.
00:48:19But in reality,
00:48:20light-years measure distance.
00:48:23NASA's definition
00:48:24of a light-year
00:48:25goes like this.
00:48:26The total distance
00:48:27that a beam of light
00:48:28moving in a straight line
00:48:30travels in a year.
00:48:32And since light moves
00:48:33at a speed of
00:48:34186,000 miles per second,
00:48:36a light-year equals
00:48:37almost 6 trillion miles.
00:48:40Hey, do the math!
00:48:42Now, people often believe
00:48:43that in space,
00:48:44you experience
00:48:45zero gravity.
00:48:47Hence the weightlessness
00:48:48astronauts feel
00:48:49on the International
00:48:50Space Station.
00:48:51But that's not
00:48:52exactly true.
00:48:53Gravity is one of the
00:48:54most important forces
00:48:55that exist in the universe.
00:48:56Thanks to it,
00:48:57the Moon can orbit Earth,
00:48:58and the Sun doesn't float away
00:49:00from our home
00:49:01Milky Way galaxy.
00:49:03But the astronauts
00:49:04on the ISS
00:49:05experience not full-fledged,
00:49:07but microgravity,
00:49:08which means
00:49:09very small gravity.
00:49:11The gravity
00:49:12on the space station
00:49:13is only 10% weaker
00:49:14than the gravity
00:49:15on Earth's surface.
00:49:16But astronauts
00:49:17are constantly in free fall.
00:49:19The spacecraft,
00:49:20the people inside,
00:49:21and all the objects aboard
00:49:22keep falling forward,
00:49:24not down,
00:49:25but around our planet,
00:49:27following a specific orbit.
00:49:29And since they're
00:49:30all falling together,
00:49:31the crew and the stuff
00:49:32inside seem to be floating.
00:49:34That's why astronauts
00:49:35can move things
00:49:36as heavy as
00:49:37hundreds of pounds
00:49:38with their fingertips.
00:49:39And even though
00:49:40microgravity
00:49:41is often called
00:49:42zero gravity,
00:49:43they're very different things.
00:49:45Now, it may seem
00:49:46as if the Sun
00:49:47is always on fire.
00:49:48At least,
00:49:49that's what it looks like
00:49:50in pictures.
00:49:51But in reality,
00:49:52our star
00:49:53is a giant ball of gas.
00:49:55Hey, I can relate.
00:49:57Nuclear reactions
00:49:58happening in its core
00:49:59at all times
00:50:00makes the Sun burn.
00:50:02Every second,
00:50:03hundreds of millions
00:50:04of tons of hydrogen
00:50:05are converted
00:50:06into almost as much helium.
00:50:08During this process,
00:50:09huge amounts of energy
00:50:10are released as gamma rays.
00:50:12Then, these rays
00:50:13turn into light.
00:50:14In other words,
00:50:15the Sun does emit
00:50:16blinding light
00:50:17and incredible heat.
00:50:19But it's not actually
00:50:20on fire
00:50:21because no oxygen
00:50:22is involved in the process.
00:50:24A human can explode
00:50:25if they get into open space
00:50:27without a spacesuit.
00:50:28Well,
00:50:29contrary to popular belief,
00:50:31taking off a spacesuit
00:50:32during a spacewalk
00:50:33won't be as dramatic
00:50:34as it's often pictured
00:50:35in movies.
00:50:37A person will lose consciousness
00:50:39due to a lack of oxygen
00:50:40after 15 seconds
00:50:41of being in outer space
00:50:43without protection.
00:50:44Before it happens,
00:50:45the person should breathe out
00:50:47as much air as possible.
00:50:48Otherwise,
00:50:49this oxygen will damage
00:50:50their lungs
00:50:51from the inside.
00:50:52Then,
00:50:53without the protection
00:50:54of the spacesuit,
00:50:55which is like a mini spaceship,
00:50:56the pressure
00:50:57inside their body
00:50:58will drop.
00:50:59This will cause
00:51:00even more serious troubles.
00:51:01And even though
00:51:02this person
00:51:03definitely won't burst,
00:51:04they won't want to stay
00:51:05outside for too long.
00:51:07Black holes are
00:51:08giant, scary,
00:51:09cosmic vacuum cleaners,
00:51:10they say.
00:51:11But in reality,
00:51:12black holes
00:51:13are more like fly traps.
00:51:15They don't look for things
00:51:16to munch on.
00:51:17Instead,
00:51:18they sit out there
00:51:19quite passively.
00:51:20Only when a star
00:51:21comes too close
00:51:22does a black hole
00:51:23spring into action.
00:51:25Even so,
00:51:26only those space objects
00:51:27that cross
00:51:28a certain border
00:51:29get ripped apart.
00:51:30If the Sun
00:51:31were suddenly replaced
00:51:32with a black hole,
00:51:33Earth's orbit
00:51:34wouldn't change.
00:51:35At the same time,
00:51:36Earth's temperature
00:51:37would be different,
00:51:38there would be
00:51:39no solar wind,
00:51:40and no magnetic storms
00:51:41created by the Sun
00:51:42would affect our planet.
00:51:43And let's say
00:51:44the black hole
00:51:45that replaced the Sun
00:51:46had the same mass
00:51:47as our star.
00:51:48Then,
00:51:49according to the law
00:51:50of physics,
00:51:51Earth would have to
00:51:52come very close
00:51:53to get pulled
00:51:54into this black hole.
00:51:55Now,
00:51:56the dark side
00:51:57of the Moon myth
00:51:58was debunked
00:51:59more than 50 years ago.
00:52:00And still,
00:52:01not everyone knows
00:52:02that this dark side
00:52:03is simply part of
00:52:04the Earth's
00:52:05natural satellite
00:52:06that faces away
00:52:07from our planet.
00:52:08By no means
00:52:09is it darker
00:52:10than any other region
00:52:11of the Moon,
00:52:12and sunlight
00:52:13falls equally
00:52:14on all sides
00:52:15of the satellite.
00:52:16It only seems dark
00:52:17because we never see
00:52:18it,
00:52:19all because
00:52:20of the phenomenon
00:52:21known as
00:52:22tidal locking.
00:52:23Over billions of years
00:52:24– ooh, let me say
00:52:25that again,
00:52:26billions of years –
00:52:27the gravitational
00:52:28connection between
00:52:29our planet
00:52:30and its natural
00:52:31satellite has
00:52:32changed their orbits.
00:52:33The speed at which
00:52:34they move
00:52:35has also become
00:52:36different.
00:52:37And since Earth
00:52:38is way bigger
00:52:39than the Moon,
00:52:40the satellite's
00:52:41rotation was
00:52:42gradually slowing
00:52:43down.
00:52:44Until at one point,
00:52:45it reached the
00:52:46point of balance.
00:52:47It had a full
00:52:48rotation around
00:52:49its axis,
00:52:50and a fully
00:52:51orbit around
00:52:52Earth.
00:52:53Now, you might
00:52:54have heard people
00:52:55referring to Venus
00:52:56as Earth's twin.
00:52:57It's true that
00:52:58both these planets
00:52:59are of almost
00:53:00the same size.
00:53:01They have similar
00:53:02mass and composition.
00:53:03The surface gravity
00:53:04on Venus is
00:53:0591% of that
00:53:06on Earth.
00:53:07So, if your weight
00:53:08was 100 pounds
00:53:09on our planet,
00:53:10on Venus,
00:53:11you'd weigh
00:53:1291 pounds.
00:53:13And still,
00:53:14calling these planets
00:53:15twins is a step
00:53:16in the right direction.
00:53:17The atmosphere
00:53:18on Venus is
00:53:19100 times thicker
00:53:20than that on Earth.
00:53:21Plus, its surface
00:53:22temperatures are
00:53:23insanely high –
00:53:24up to 850 degrees
00:53:25Fahrenheit.
00:53:26That's hot enough
00:53:27to melt lead
00:53:28or burn up
00:53:29your pizza!
00:53:30Venus has no
00:53:31water oceans
00:53:32or any life forms.
00:53:33It also rotates
00:53:34backward compared
00:53:35to all other planets
00:53:36of the Solar System,
00:53:37including Earth.
00:53:38By the way,
00:53:39another myth
00:53:40claims that Mercury
00:53:41is the hottest planet
00:53:42in the Solar System.
00:53:43After all,
00:53:44it's the closest
00:53:45planet to the Sun,
00:53:46but Venus is
00:53:47actually hotter.
00:53:48Asteroids strike Earth
00:53:49much more often
00:53:50than people tend
00:53:51to believe.
00:53:52But most of these
00:53:53collisions aren't
00:53:54history-changing
00:53:55extinction events.
00:53:56Most of them
00:53:57go completely
00:53:58unnoticed.
00:53:59Most asteroids
00:54:00that approach our planet
00:54:01are qualified as
00:54:02small near-Earth
00:54:03objects.
00:54:04They usually burn
00:54:05up in Earth's
00:54:06atmosphere before
00:54:07they even have a chance
00:54:08to wipe out life
00:54:09off the surface
00:54:10of the planet.
00:54:11Not that they're
00:54:12big enough to do that.
00:54:13And still,
00:54:1440 to 80 tons
00:54:15of space debris
00:54:16fall on Earth
00:54:17every year.
00:54:18Most of this debris
00:54:19is tiny asteroids,
00:54:20also called
00:54:21bolides.
00:54:22They're usually
00:54:23no larger than
00:54:2465 feet in diameter.
00:54:25Um,
00:54:26that's small?
00:54:27Yeah,
00:54:28says so right here.
00:54:29Okay.
00:54:30So,
00:54:31how's this for Opulent?
00:54:32A single parking
00:54:33space in Hong Kong
00:54:34has sold for an
00:54:35astounding
00:54:36$1.3 million.
00:54:37The sale
00:54:38has broken
00:54:39the world record
00:54:40for the most
00:54:41expensive
00:54:42parking space.
00:54:43This spot is part
00:54:44of a luxury
00:54:45residential development
00:54:46called The Peak,
00:54:47and is where
00:54:48some of the most
00:54:49expensive homes
00:54:50in Asia are located.
00:54:51One of the houses
00:54:52was rented out
00:54:53in May
00:54:54for a cool
00:54:55$210,000
00:54:56per month.
00:54:57Doing the math,
00:54:58that's $2.5 million
00:55:00per year to rent.
00:55:01The person
00:55:02doesn't even own
00:55:03the home.
00:55:04The History Supreme
00:55:05breaks both the
00:55:06records for the
00:55:07most expensive
00:55:08and the world's
00:55:09biggest superyacht.
00:55:10It's solid gold
00:55:11and 100 feet long.
00:55:12The yacht features
00:55:13a statue made
00:55:14of T-Rex bones,
00:55:15a meteorite
00:55:16rock wall
00:55:17in the master suite,
00:55:18a 24-karat gold
00:55:19panoramic wall
00:55:20aquarium,
00:55:21and there's also
00:55:22a rare 18.5-karat
00:55:23diamond on board.
00:55:24It cost a total
00:55:25of $4.8 billion
00:55:26to make.
00:55:27A racehorse
00:55:28named Fusayichi
00:55:29Pegasus
00:55:30once sold
00:55:31for $60 million.
00:55:32That's around
00:55:33$90 million
00:55:34in today's money.
00:55:35The stallion
00:55:36was in high demand
00:55:37after winning
00:55:38the world's
00:55:39biggest
00:55:40racehorse
00:55:41in 2000.
00:55:42In 2012,
00:55:43a Lego brick
00:55:44made of 14-karat
00:55:45gold
00:55:46sold for
00:55:47$12,500.
00:55:48But it was
00:55:49never intended
00:55:50to be sold.
00:55:51The company
00:55:52gave the bricks
00:55:53out as a gift
00:55:54to their
00:55:55long-term
00:55:56employees.
00:55:57The coinure
00:55:58diamond is the
00:55:59most valuable
00:56:00in the world
00:56:01and is quite
00:56:02literally priceless.
00:56:03The 109-karat
00:56:04diamond weighs
00:56:05just under
00:56:06one ounce
00:56:07and is the
00:56:08main diamond
00:56:09of the British
00:56:10world.
00:56:11A single taco
00:56:12in Los Cabos,
