00:00 Yes, of course, we're gutted about the Isley defeat, but overall, I think he's been, you know,
00:04 from where England were, he's done a great job. Gareth Southgate's got to take a gamble now.
00:09 He's got to play his players that are going to win him a tournament, because for me, he's going to
00:12 be judged on this tournament, and they've got to win it. If they lose in the final, Gareth Southgate's
00:18 tenure has been ultimately a failure. If they win it, it's been a fantastic success, because the
00:23 infrastructure has completely changed, because they've won a trophy, but for me, it's win or
00:27 bust now. And so he's got to be smart, and he's got to pick the players that I think are going to
00:32 take them to glory.
00:33 Hello, I'm Matty Gregory, and welcome to the Premier League panel. This week, we're going to
00:41 be discussing the fringe players that should make the cut for England's final 26-man squad
00:45 for Euro 2024 this summer. To help me provide Gareth Southgate with a bit of unsolicited advice,
00:50 I'm joined by some expert guests, the Express and Stars digital sports editor, Nathan Tudor,
00:54 and National World Football editor and Arsenal expert, Chris Wheatley. We'll start up front,
00:59 I think. Nathan, I'll come to you first. There's been a lot of discussion about Ivan Toni versus
01:03 Oli Watkins as basically his Harry Kane backup. Who would you take if you were in charge?
01:08 Well, good afternoon, gentlemen. Look, it's a difficult one, isn't it? For me,
01:13 being on the West Midlands patch, I've seen a lot of Aston Villa this year, which means,
01:17 of course, I've seen a lot of Oli Watkins. For me, it's not even a debate. I think that
01:24 how you can overlook Oli Watkins in this squad, one of the best Premier League strikers this
01:29 season, if not the best, I think would be absolutely insane. Not only can he play up front,
01:35 the amount of goals he's scored this season, but he can also play wide as well. I don't think it's
01:41 a discussion to be honest, gents. I think that he's got to be on the plane. Of course, it will
01:45 be different. Look, if things go and they move from 23 to 26 men, then maybe both go. But you
01:52 talk about that and you talk about, Matt, you talk about Oli Watkins or Ivan Toni. For me, Ivan
01:57 Toni is not even in the picture. Why are we not talking about Dominic Solanke as being that third
02:01 person? 19 goals this season and a Bournemouth side that are, again, doing absolutely fantastic
02:08 things, predictive of relegation alongside the likes of Wolves and Luton this season.
02:12 For me, it's between Solanke and Oli Watkins. Obviously, Kane's on the plane and starting,
02:18 but for me, if I was going to take three, I'll be taking Solanke, Watkins and Kane. I wouldn't
02:24 have Toni in the discussion. For me, Toni, obviously, he's had the ban, he's come back,
02:28 he's been out the side on four. He's had a little bit of a bite. He's not particularly happy with
02:32 this situation. People believe that he's going to be leaving at the end of the season. He seems to
02:36 be resigned to that. I think he's looking for a move. He doesn't look happy. He's had a couple
02:40 of injuries. I don't even think he's close to the airport for me. - What do you think, Chris?
02:47 You're right to what sort of mentions Nathan. Ivan Toni's had a bit of an interesting season
02:50 because obviously he did have that long ban. He scored a couple of goals pretty much straight
02:54 away when he came back, but it's all been a bit tricky since. He's missed a couple of games.
02:58 Do you think he's a serious? There is a discussion about taking him with the England squad,
03:03 or do you think he should be looking elsewhere? - I completely agree with Nathan there. I think
03:08 you summed it up perfectly. When you look at Ivan Toni, I think what he's done in the Premier
03:15 League since getting Brentford promoted is really impressive. That's why he's even in these
03:19 conversations. I think this season, and I know he's had the ban, which probably didn't help
03:26 matters, I don't think he's been as impressive as previous campaigns. Watkins is clearly above him.
03:34 We haven't even mentioned, I know this is a bit of a left field kind of shout, but Colton Morris
03:40 for Luton Town has got more goals than Ivan Toni. So I think if we're talking about strikers and
03:45 goal scorers who are going to be in the conversation, I think we know that it's not a likely
03:49 name to be mentioned in the same bracket as Ivan Toni and Ollie Watkins, but I think he deserves
03:57 at least a mention on here. - Yeah, I mean, I think obviously he hasn't been called up to any
04:02 England squads yet. I mean, Dominic Slankey was left out of the games for Brazil and Belgium,
04:06 which I suppose is why he's kind of been left out of the conversation. I think there's obviously
04:10 a lot of people respect what he's done this season, but it feels like he isn't massively
04:13 on Gareth Southgate's radar for whatever reason. I thought to bring it back briefly to Ollie
04:18 Watkins, one of the thoughts I have about why perhaps he hasn't, he isn't sort of the clear,
04:23 sort of outright front runner to be Harry Kane's backup, is less to do with how well he's played,
04:28 because obviously he's been brilliant, but perhaps because he's a very different type of
04:32 striker to Harry Kane. So he spends a lot of his time as sort of the last man going off the shoulder
04:36 of the defender, trying to beat the offside trap. Whereas the way England play, of course,
04:40 you know, they often have Harry Kane sort of coming a bit deeper, playing that quarterback role,
04:43 as it were. Like Nathan, I don't know if you think, do you think it's a bit of an awkward
04:46 tactical fit? Do you think that's one of the reasons that Watkin hasn't really been able to
04:50 shine in the handful of England caps he's had so far? - Yeah, I think potentially, but I do think
04:56 sometimes, and we do this a lot in this country, sometimes I overthink things like, for me,
05:01 you've got to pick players on form now. I think Gareth Southgate overall, and you guys might
05:05 disagree, I think he's done a pretty great job since he's been England manager. Yes,
05:10 he's made mistakes. Yes, of course, we're gutted about the Isley defeat, but overall, I think he's
05:15 been, you know, from where England were, he's done a great job. However, for me, this tournament,
05:20 he has got to pick players in form. He has got to pick, he can't rely on, you know, his level
05:26 heads. He's got to take a couple of risks. And for me, you've got to pick players in form,
05:29 regardless of whether he can, you know, he's maybe slightly different role to Harry Kane.
05:34 He's going to be coming on for the last 10, 15 minutes of games, bar a Harry Kane injury. So
05:39 it's not as if he's going to be starting. So by that time, a lot of the systems will have changed.
05:42 I think he can adapt. And like I say, because he can drift that wide, because he can play up top,
05:46 which he has done it below this season, for me, it's just, it's just a no brainer. Yes,
05:50 I think that's why he has struggled before, but I think now is the time where Gareth Southgate
05:55 has got to take a gamble now. He's got to play his players that are going to win him a tournament.
05:58 Because for me, he's going to be judged on this tournament and they've got to win it.
06:02 If they, if they lose in a final Gareth Southgate's 10 years has been ultimately a failure. If they
06:07 win it, it's been a fantastic success because the infrastructure has completely changed because
06:12 they won a trophy. But for me, it's win or bus now. And so he's got to be smart and he's got
06:17 to pick the players that I think are going to take them to glory. Well, talking of picking players
06:22 on form, then if you look at the players sort of slightly further back behind the main striker,
06:26 there's quite a few, I think we mostly expect sort of, you know, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham,
06:30 Bukai Osaka, barring fitness issues to be sort of the starting players of the different sort of
06:34 rest of the forward positions. But looking slightly further behind that, there is a bit of an issue
06:38 where some of the more obvious starters have been out of form this season, particularly looking at
06:42 Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish, haven't had great campaigns. I mean, Chris, are those players
06:47 that you take or do you think other people should be coming in instead of the slightly more
06:50 experienced and settled players in Southgate squad like that? Yeah, that's a really good point.
06:56 I think, yeah, in terms of picking players on form, I think Nathan's right, but I'd say someone
07:02 like Marcus Rashford has really not hit the heights this season of previous campaigns,
07:08 similar to Ivan Toni, I guess. And yeah, I personally probably wouldn't even have him in the
07:16 squad. That's just my personal opinion. I don't feel like he's done enough this season to warrant
07:21 a place in the squad. You look at his performances for Man United, they haven't been good enough.
07:27 And I think as well, there are so many other players who have done better than him this season.
07:34 I'm talking about someone like Cole Palmer, maybe he doesn't play in that kind of position that
07:38 Rashford does, but he's still an out and out goal scorer. Again, just going back to Watkins,
07:45 I didn't even mention that he's got 12 assists this season, which is really, really magnificent,
07:50 I think, for what we're kind of talking about as a goal scorer.
07:54 Yeah, I mean, I think it was interesting that Cole Palmer didn't really get much time on the
07:59 field. He didn't get any time on the field, I should say, in the recent friendlies. I don't
08:02 know if that was fitness related, but it does seem at this point, if Cole Palmer doesn't go,
08:06 that would be extraordinary, given the season he's having, given his recent form in particular.
08:10 He's got seven games in a row where he was either scored or assisted and often did a hell of a lot
08:14 of scoring and assisting. I mean, look, the other sort of name I want to mention, especially with
08:19 regards to sort of the Rashford-Greelish position, is Anthony Gordon. Do you think, Nathan, he sort
08:24 of jumped ahead of Rashford and Greelish this season, or do you think Southgate will stick
08:28 with sort of the tried and tested players? Yeah, I mean, I think Chris is bang on the money for me.
08:33 I wouldn't take Marcus Rashford, whether he's a 23 man or a 26 man squad. Brilliant last season,
08:38 but something's wrong there on the field, off the field. It's just not happening for him. And it
08:42 goes back to taking these players in form. I don't think Marcus Rashford, I think he obviously had
08:47 an off field issue, you know, missed those games. He was in a nightclub in Ireland, came back and we
08:51 thought, okay, he's going to knuckle down now and really show what he's made of. And it hasn't,
08:54 hasn't happened for him. So for me, you don't pick him and he's currently injured at this moment
08:58 in time anyway. Anthony Gordon, banging form, absolutely a hundred percent on that left-hand
09:03 side. I think you look at him, you look at the likes of Gerard Bowen as well. I'd be taking
09:07 both of them ahead of Marcus Rashford as it is. Both of them, I think can play out wide.
09:11 Bowen, you've got on that right-hand side, which I know is occupied by the likes of Palm,
09:16 the likes of Saka, but on that left-hand side, he's obviously can play there as well. So I like
09:22 Gordon. I like Bowen to take that place. And those two would be, would be way ahead for me,
09:27 for Marcus Rashford. Obviously Marcus Rashford has got, you know, I think he's third highest
09:32 scoring Gareth Southgate's tenure as England manager behind Raheem Sterling and Kerry Kane.
09:36 So that definitely will play a part. And I think in previous tournaments, he's gone with his boys.
09:42 I'm not too sure now. I think that he's right on that cusp, but for me, like I say, whether it's
09:48 23 or 26 man, I think we're expecting it to be 26 man. I wouldn't take him. I honestly wouldn't.
09:53 And let's see, I don't think that's his own career over by any stretch of the imagination. I think
09:57 he'll, he'll come again, but for me, I would take Bowen and I would take Gordon ahead of Rashford.
10:02 Yeah, for sure. I think, I mean, Rashford, whatever the reasons he has struggled this
10:06 season, we know what he's capable of. He's brilliant at his best, but it's been a while
10:10 since he's been at that point. And that's a real shame. It's a shame for England going into this
10:14 tournament. But it is tricky to sort of justify picking him at this point. And I think we often
10:18 associate Gareth Southgate as being quite a conservative manager who sort of has his players
10:22 and he takes them time and time again. But he has shown like particularly Raheem Sterling this last
10:26 year or so that he can be a little bit more ruthless than perhaps we gave him credit for.
10:30 But you know, obviously Sterling's not, you know, not had a good enough season really to break his
10:33 way back into the England squad. You would have thought. A sort of slightly left field-ish
10:38 suggestion I wanted to mention was Noni Maguayke at Chelsea, because he's been fantastic these last
10:42 few weeks. Do you see him as a late bolter or is there anyone else you see sort of, he should
10:46 perhaps come into the thinking at the last minute and possibly take advantage of what we expect to
10:50 be a 26-man squad? Yeah, I mean, he didn't even come into my thinking, to be honest, Matt.
10:57 Until just now, I mentioned him.
10:59 Yeah, until you just mentioned him. Yeah. I'd say, you know, what put me off about him was
11:04 that little quarrel with Cole Palmer over the penalty recently. I think obviously he's a very
11:10 young player and you know, those kind of things can happen in games, but I don't think it was a
11:14 great look for him or for Chelsea. And I think Cole Palmer showed a lot of professionalism in that
11:21 situation. And yeah, I'm not saying don't pick him just because of that. Of course,
11:25 he's had a good season. But again, I think Chelsea, maybe looking at the bigger picture,
11:31 there's no one really who stands out in that Chelsea team more than Palmer. And yeah,
11:37 Madawaki's had an OK season, but personally, I wouldn't pick him.
11:42 That's the end of part one. We'll be back to figure out the rest of England's squad
11:49 after these messages.
11:57 Welcome back to the Premier League panel where we're discussing players.
12:09 Well, we've talked a lot about the players up the upfront, looking a bit further back on the pitch.
12:19 I think the defence comes up with a lot of questions as well. Starting with right back.
12:24 I mean, there's obviously a lot of questions about some of the players who are very good,
12:27 but Gareth Southgate doesn't necessarily seem to sort of play as often or rate as much. Trent
12:32 Alexander-Arnold always feels like he's on the cusp of the squad, especially with only 23 men.
12:36 They don't see. So if you look at players like Ben White is a big thing as well,
12:40 whether he should be brought back to the squad. Chris,
12:41 I mean, you you're obviously following Arsenal a lot for you. What's the situation with Ben White?
12:46 Do you think that's something that should be looked at again? Do you think he should be in
12:49 the England squad on merit, regardless of the situation? Yeah, I mean, from from what we've
12:55 heard, it all stems from a kind of disagreement between Steve Holland and Ben White. And I think
13:03 Ben White has his own reasons for not wanting to be called up. And I think he needs a lot of
13:10 respect for that and deserves respect for that. And interestingly, his agent came out last week
13:16 and basically said, you never know what's going on inside someone's head and someone's life and
13:21 not to judge professional athletes because they're humans. And, you know, we've heard that
13:26 kind of stuff before from from people. But I thought it was quite interesting coming from
13:30 Ben White's agent. For me personally, I think, yeah, of course, he should be on the plane. But
13:36 I think what's really important is squad harmony. And we've seen previous England squads where maybe
13:43 they've had players or they've had camps which haven't been successful due to one or two players
13:49 just not being happy or disrupting the kind of squad harmony. I don't think Ben White would be
13:55 happy if he if he was in this current England squad, because clearly he doesn't want to play
14:00 under the current assistant coach. And for that reason, yeah, I don't think it's it's the right
14:07 time for him to be back in in the England squad, maybe in a future tournament, perhaps he could be.
14:14 I'm not expecting him to be involved in this one, though. And I think, yeah, as I said, he's got his
14:18 reasons for that. And he's had a fantastic season with Arsenal, of course. Yeah, he absolutely has.
14:23 I mean, it's a bit of a shame that there is this sort of dispute between the England management
14:28 and White. Do you think looking at the players that got access to a right back, who would be
14:33 England's best right back? Who would you take in that position, Chris? It's a very good question.
14:42 Can you give me a list of the right backs to go through? Sure. I mean, I guess you're looking at
14:46 Karl Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Rhys James, as well as obviously another sort of interesting
14:51 kind of a wildcard, because for my money, a fully fit Rhys James, if such a thing still exists,
14:56 is one of the best right backs in the world. He's back in training, at least he might be fit for the
15:00 end of the season. So you look at those sort of names. I mean, Walker usually gets the nod.
15:04 Trippier as well, sorry I should mention. I mean, who are you taking from that list of players?
15:09 If you say there's got to be two, maybe a third, especially if there's 26 players,
15:13 you know, who gets into the play for you? I mean, I think it's Karl Walker's position,
15:18 isn't it? Like it's quite difficult to get him out of the team. I think Trippier has done okay
15:25 at Newcastle. Yeah, I mean, Karl Walker is usually the first name on the team sheet. Man City,
15:33 he's a stalwart in defence. He's Mr Reliable, isn't he? And yeah, I don't think, although I did
15:41 see Karl Walker get beaten by Ole Eina for pace in the game against Forest at the weekend. That
15:46 was a bit of a surprise. But yeah, other than that, I think Karl Walker is probably the first
15:51 name right back. What about for you, Nathan? I mean, is there anyone you sort of think should
15:56 or shouldn't be in the squad from that list of players? It's a good question. I mean, look,
16:00 it's hard, isn't it? The fantasy football player for me would play Trent every single time, but
16:06 you know, you've got to be horses for courses. And like you say, Karl Walker, world-class talent and
16:11 has been superb. Chris made a good point there that, you know, father time's undefeated and,
16:16 you know, he will lose his pace at some point. I still think that he's Gareth Southgate's preferred
16:20 option. At right back, I would take Trippier. However, there are a couple of centre-backs
16:26 who can play right back as well. So you look at Joe Gomez at Liverpool, you know, you're not going
16:33 to be first choice right back, not going to be second choice right back. But if you're going to
16:36 save a player in a squad and you can have someone who can move across in an emergency, then he can
16:43 do that. So I think you look at him, you look at someone like Edry Consa, Aston Villa, who's done
16:49 exactly the same. He's played right back for Aston Villa, playing right back at this moment in time,
16:52 plays centre-back as well, got his first captain to Gareth Southgate this season. So I think that's
16:56 maybe where it's going to come down to again, those last three men, two to three men positions,
17:01 and it might be versatility that will help maybe a couple of these players over the likes of
17:08 potentially just a regular right back who may be second to third choice.
17:12 Yeah, and you mentioned the centre-backs, and I think there's an interesting discussion to be
17:16 had there as well, because I think we all pretty much assume that, you know, assuming everyone's
17:20 fit and so on, Harry Maguire and John Stones will almost certainly go and most likely be the starting
17:24 centre-back pairing. But there's a lot of players that Gareth Southgate's given a cap or two to
17:29 call up here and there, sort of in terms of the players who come behind them. You look at Mark
17:33 Agee, Lewis Dunk for Kota Mori, you mentioned Gomez Consa, Jarrod Brownthwaite was in the squad
17:38 for the last couple of games but didn't get on the field. You know, who are you taking as your
17:42 backup centre-backs or even to replace the players that we've got, you know, we're assuming are going
17:46 to be first choice now? Chris or me? Sorry. Sorry, I was addressing that to you, Nathan. Sorry,
17:53 I was just... Oh, sorry. Yeah, no, I mean, look, all really good options. To be honest, I think
17:58 Lewis Dunk struggled a little bit recently. I think Brighton obviously haven't had the season that
18:02 they have had last year and he wouldn't make the plane for me regardless of 23 or 26. I do like
18:09 Brownthwaite. I think he's a really good player. Obviously got a lot of attention this year. We'll
18:13 get a lot of attention over this summer, you know, valued at massive money. And I understand that
18:18 he's still relatively new to this England set up. Again, it goes back to picking players on form.
18:24 I think he'd be great value. And look, you've got to realize that out of all the positions that we've
18:29 talked about, mostly you expect a lot of these guys to stay fit. John Stones, you just don't
18:34 know, do you? You don't know this moment in time when he's in and out the Manchester City squad
18:38 every other week. He's a nightmare to own from a fancy Premier League point of view. But I think
18:44 from an England point of view, you just don't know. You might get five, six, seven games out of him.
18:49 You might get one. So he's got to pick a centre backs very, very, very carefully. I mean, Harry
18:54 Maguire's had his injuries as well. That's why I go back to someone like concert who I think,
18:58 although he was injured at the start of the season has come back strong. And I think that he will
19:02 probably make the plane if I'm being totally honest. But Brownthwaite is someone who I like a
19:07 lot. I really do. What about you, Chris? You've got his sort of favourites there. And I personally,
19:12 for what it's worth, I sort of agree with Nathan about Lewis Dunk. He's had a sort of have more
19:17 caps than some of the other players, partly due to injuries to some of the recent times over the
19:21 last sort of half dozen internationals. But I remember, you know, Dunk made a mistake for the
19:24 Brazil goal and the friendly at Wembley. He made mistakes against Scotland, I remember as well.
19:28 You know, I'm not necessarily sold on Lewis Dunk as an England defender,
19:32 but I don't think there's anyone who stood out for you or you're not convinced about.
19:35 I mean, in terms of players who could be going, maybe Mark Gahee. I know he's been out of injury.
19:43 He's probably only going to make the final few games of the season. But I think, you know,
19:47 on form when he's fit, he's certainly in with a shout. I think Levi Colwell as well.
19:52 You know, he was talked about as, you know, being the next big centre back of English football. And
19:59 perhaps hasn't lived up to that in, you know, recent months. I know he's had his injury problems
20:05 as well. But yeah, I think those two are probably the ones who come in with a shout. And then
20:10 you mentioned Lewis Dunk. I agree with you. I think he's made quite a lot of mistakes in
20:15 high profile games. And yeah, I think he does have certainly some good attributes. But I think when
20:21 you're playing against, you know, the elite level of European football, I think probably you need
20:28 someone a bit more technically astute and robust. And I think those two players that I mentioned
20:33 probably just above him. Colwell's a great shout, Chris. Great shout. I mean, sorry to cut you off,
20:39 Matt, but I mean, obviously been off out injured lately. I saw a couple of lengthy layoffs and I
20:45 think he's just coming back now from this toe issue. If he can get back in that starting Chelsea
20:49 line up between now and the end of the season, absolutely. I would take him. Rolls-Royce of a
20:54 centre back for me. Absolutely superb. You know, it has, I think slightly, unfortunately, he had to
20:59 fill in for Ben Shuller, a left back. He's not a left back, but again, emergency situation. You've
21:03 got options there if, and when at least he has played that not particularly successfully, but
21:08 yeah, if you can get Colwell fit between now and the end of the season, starting regularly
21:11 and he's fully fit, absolutely 100%. Couldn't agree more with Chris.
21:14 And just, I mean, you mentioned this very quickly, Chris. So you mentioned that sort of the technical
21:19 attributes of that being quite important. Do you think that's a problem for Jarrod Granthwaite?
21:22 Because he has been Titanic for Everton lately, but he is a bit of an old fashioned centre half.
21:27 He's not a great passer. He's not a dribbler. He's someone who cuts out the balls going behind,
21:31 wins every battle in the air. Do you think England need that? Or do you think that because he isn't
21:35 like, he's a slightly different type of defender, do you think that hurts his chances of getting on
21:38 the play?
21:38 No, I don't think so. I think because of Gareth Southgate's style, we've spoken about it already.
21:45 And I think, you know, Granthwaite is someone who kind of defends quite deep. He can play in also
21:51 that kind of defensive midfield role. He pretty much does play as a defensive midfielder because
21:55 he goes so quite high up the pitch, almost in a midfield role. I think, yeah, he is old fashioned.
22:02 I think Gareth Southgate will certainly look at him regardless of relegation situations. And
22:08 didn't even mention, actually, I wanted to mention, I wrote it down that I think for midfield,
22:14 Morgan Gibbs-White is certainly one player who deserves a lot more people talking about him.
22:20 I think creatively, he's really, really good player. He can dribble. He can take players on.
22:27 I think his stats are really good for, certainly for Forrest. He's one of the top
22:31 players in attack this season. So yeah, he's certainly someone that I wanted to just mention
22:36 as well. Yeah, I mean, very quickly, Nathan, because we are running out of time. Is there
22:40 anyone you wanted to mention? I forgot Gibbs-White is a bit of a late shout. Is there any sort of
22:43 player that hasn't come up that you think should be on the plane or at least be in with a shout
22:46 that we haven't talked about? I mean, I don't know whether he's on the plane or not, but Connor
22:51 Gallagher, I think is someone who I always write, I think he's massively underrated. And, you know,
22:55 if you've got someone for that holding role, I think he's a leader. I think he's someone who will
22:59 have a positive influence. We talked about maybe Ben White and, you know, if he was there,
23:02 he wouldn't be particularly happy to be in that spot if he's not playing. I think Connor Gallagher
23:07 is the opposite. And if there was a doubt for his England place, then he would be quite happy. A bit
23:12 like Connor Cody did in the Euros. Someone fantastic to be around the camp. And that's
23:16 someone who I would definitely take. That's all we've got time for on this week's Premier League
23:24 panel. Many thanks to Nathan Judah and Chris Wheatley for joining me, to Mark Wilson, our
23:28 producer, and of course, to all of you for watching at home. We'll be back at the usual time next
23:31 week. That's Wednesday, 10pm on Shots TV, 3D Channel 276. And of course, you can catch us
23:36 on demand on ShotsTV.com. But until then, goodbye.
