00:50You may also be watching latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in and this week we will
00:55start at the Emirates where Albion held 10-man Arsenal in another game filled with controversy.
01:00Kai Havertz locked Bart Verbruggen for the Gunners 38th minute opener but the game completely changed
01:05after Rice was dismissed for a second yellow card in the 49th minute for delaying a free kick being
01:09taken by Joel Veltman. Brighton piled on the pressure after that point and drew level in the
01:1458th minute when Yancuba Minta's shot was parried into the path of Pedro by David Rea and the Brazilian
01:19striker slotted the ball under the keeper. From that alone Darren I think we can ascertain it
01:24was a breathless game. Try and sum that one up for us. Yeah it was a great game to watch,
01:31a good one for the neutrals as well but yeah overall a pretty good performance from Brighton.
01:37At the beginning it looked as though Arsenal were going to run all over them really.
01:42They looked really dangerous going forward. Jack Hinchelwood was playing at left back and he was
01:48having a tough time up against Saka but I was impressed how Hinchelwood stuck to his task
01:54really against Saka. I think he can do any fullback in the world, Saka. He's so dangerous
02:02and I thought Hinchelwood actually played him quite well. Throughout the game I thought he
02:08grew into it and looked pretty good so credit to Hinchelwood for that one but yeah Brighton
02:14stuck at it. I think under previous managers under Di Zerbi they might have wilted under the
02:19pressure a bit but they looked a bit more solid against Arsenal. Like you say they went down
02:261-0 to a good goal from Habats and then the sending off changed it which caused a lot of
02:34controversy. There was a lot of opinions on it either way. Both the pundits I think it's
02:39Keown and Peter Crouch that were there for TNT Sports. They were sort of saying that Veltman
02:45did a little bit of a job on Declan Rice and made sort of more of it than he could have. He wasn't
02:52really intended to take the free kick but he pretended that he was and Declan Rice kicked it
02:57away which obviously Declan Rice was in the wrong but so it was one of those really where I think
03:02both players they know what they were doing and this time it went Veltman's way. He knew that he
03:10was already on a booking and yeah Declan Rice took the bait really. He's an experienced player. He
03:16probably should have known better but it all happened quite quickly. He probably didn't
03:20expect a second yellow for it but yeah and then it turned. Brighton then went on the offensive.
03:27They had more of the ball going forward and got a deserved equaliser really and
03:33yeah then it could have gone either way. Arsenal were very good on the counter-attack but Brighton
03:38probably didn't create as many chances as they wanted to and at the end of the day won one,
03:43a fair result and yeah now it's an international break and then Ipswich town after the international
03:50break. Mighty Ipswich town but yes going back to the Rice red card. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta
03:58criticised the lack of consistency in the decision and said Veltman should have also
04:01seen red in the same incident. What did you make of this incident Sam? Was Veltman lucky not to see
04:07red or was it wily play from the Dutchman? Yeah it was a bizarre moment really because I was there
04:13watching the game actually in the stadium and as it happened it looked like Joel Veltman was about
04:17to be sent off when you kind of saw the incident unfold and kind of all the Arsenal players
04:21surrounded him for what looked like a kick out of Declan Rice but obviously when you saw the replay
04:26you actually saw what happened and what was obviously going on in the referee's mind and
04:33obviously he's obviously pulled Declan Rice up for obviously delaying play, wasting time but I
04:39think it's a bit of both really. Veltman obviously knew what he was doing as has been said and he
04:45was definitely clever in that moment. I wouldn't necessarily say he did kick out of Rice because I
04:50think he had his eyes on the ball it seemed like he was going for the ball to take the free kick
04:54and obviously Rice stepped in front of him to try and knock the ball out of play. So yeah I don't
04:58think Veltman deserved a red but it's certainly harsh on both sides but by the letter of the law
05:04as Mikel Arteta actually admitted and you can see why Rice was sent off but his biggest problem was
05:09the lack of consistency as you just mentioned that in the first half João Pedro booted the ball
05:14after it had already gone out of play towards the Arsenal goal and he wasn't penalised for it
05:20so you can kind of understand the anger and frustration as a result of that lack of
05:25consistency from the referee really. You can let one player get away with it but not the other.
05:29So yeah I think there's definitely two sides to that but I think yeah I think you can see why
05:35Rice was sent off and it was a huge moment in the game obviously as it proved to
05:39change the game completely. So Veltman kicked a player after the ball was just touched away
05:46from him before he did it. Isn't that what Brighton fans were claiming all about Jay Williams the other
05:51day? I know it's slightly different. Jay Williams was a much heavier challenge, different
05:56circumstances but it was just a heavy challenge mistimed badly by Jay Williams because a player
06:02touched the ball away before he got there. So all you Brighton fans I welcome your comments but
06:08yeah I think there's not too much difference but Declan Rice should have been sent off,
06:12Veltman should have been sent off and that's my argument.
06:17Yeah well that's an interesting one isn't it because yeah you're right Williams was
06:22hammered for the tackle that he put in. I think a lot of it is because of what actually
06:26happened to O'Reilly as well. If O'Reilly had popped straight back up he would have been okay
06:32but because he's got to have ankle surgery I think that caused a lot of the anger.
06:36But yeah you're right it's you know Veltman could have potentially injured Declan Rice
06:42by doing that. I think Veltman knew what he was doing. Oh absolutely he was very clever.
06:47He wasn't trying to take a quick free kick at all he was trying to you know sort of get one
06:53over on Declan Rice. So yeah it's a good debate and yes I'm sure there'll be some Brighton fans
06:59commenting. Healthy debate hopefully not abuse we don't want any of that. Oh if you're getting
07:05abused don't worry about that. My point of view is that you can go and kick him around
07:10as many Arsenal players as you want. I actively encourage it. Anyway going back to the game
07:16itself. Gilles Pedro's equaliser at the Emirates was his second goal in three Premier League games
07:20this season. How impressed have you been with his early season form Deron? Do you think he can break
07:25last season's tally of 20 in all competitions on current form? Yeah I think he can. He's looked
07:32really, really sharp and he was called up into the Brazil squad today as well. Originally
07:40deserved. Hurlitzer mentioned it after the Arsenal game he was disappointed that Pedro hadn't been
07:46called up. And then the other Pedro who plays for Brazil from Flamengo he picked up an injury
07:52whilst training and yeah so the Brighton Pedro has now been called up and we'll travel to face
07:59him. Of course it's a bit of a problem because now Pedro will be playing I think it's on Wednesday
08:03night they play Paraguay at about one in the morning UK time and then they play Ipswich on
08:10the Saturday. So I saw a couple of tweets trying to look at the flight times and connecting to
08:15see whether he can be back in time to play for Ipswich against Ipswich which could be a bit of
08:20a stretch. So yeah I think everyone at Brighton will be pleased for him. He's started the season
08:27so well. It looks a real threat. He plays in this number 10 role. Danny Welbeck is further
08:33forward. Pedro plays in behind Danny Welbeck and then obviously you've got
08:37Mitoma on one side, Minter on the next. So it's quite a potent attack that Brighton have got there
08:43and particularly against Manchester United I thought Pedro was brilliant. In the second
08:50half he just sort of thought well I'm going to do this on my own and he took the game by the
08:55scruff of the neck as they say and he really started running at the defence and playing in
08:59his passes and he's also a goal threat as well. I think he's absolutely the full package. They
09:06bought him for 30 million last season from Watford and I think he played, he did very well last year
09:11like you say 20 goals in all competitions and I think he's going to go on another step this year
09:17and he could potentially be one of the players that Brighton may struggle to keep hold of
09:23next summer. So I think he's going to be, hopefully he stays fit and I think he's going
09:29to have a great season. I think I'd have to agree with you there Darren. But one Albion player who
09:34won't be appearing for his country is Lewis Dunk. The seagull skipper has been left out of interim
09:38England manager Lee Carsley's squad for the Nations League doubleheader against Evan Ferguson's
09:42Ireland and Finland. What do you make of that decision Sam and is that curtains for Dunk's
09:47England career do you think? I would say so yeah. I'm not overly surprised that he's not in the
09:51squad. I mean he didn't make a single appearance for England obviously in the Euros so you can
09:56kind of understand this decision really. He's getting to the point of his career when
10:01he's obviously not going to be a first choice defender for England. I think then as obviously
10:05they look for a new permanent manager and obviously Carsley there at the moment. I think
10:09they're going to try and bed in some younger defenders I think to try and mold into the
10:14England setup and to see them progress through their national career really because I think it
10:19doesn't serve many kind of purposes to have someone there in Dunk who's not really going to
10:24play in these big games as he didn't have a single minute in the Euros. So I think there's probably
10:27not a lot of point in being there really and he can focus on Brighton and obviously he gets
10:32the latter part of his career really kind of make the most of what he's got left really because
10:37obviously as we see he's still got brilliant talent really and can make a real difference
10:42as we saw with that key pass to Minter in the Arsenal game that obviously led to the goal and
10:48it was a bit of redemption for him as obviously he didn't make a big error for that opening goal
10:52from Havertz whereas it was just a long ball forward really that he just failed to deal with
10:56and it was almost like he was out muscled by Saka who's almost half of his size. So it was
11:01definitely a bad moment for Dunk and he's had a few dodgy defensive moments but they are rare
11:06and he usually is so composed and it was a shame he didn't get any minutes for England at the Euros
11:12but I think yeah now is really time for England to move on and get some young players in and
11:16completely understand the decision not to include him this time around.
11:19Last Crawley Town had a bit of a nightmare on Saturday at home to Barnsley. Adam Phillips scored twice
11:25after an opener from Donovan Pines as the Tikes produced a dominant display to coast to a 3-0
11:29victory at the Reds in League One. Sum that up for us Mark. I saw you wrote a piece about the
11:34positives from that game. Were there many to be found? No there wasn't. It was certainly the
11:41first 45 minutes was arguably some of the worst football I've seen under Scott Lindsay at Crawley
11:47Town. Absolutely and I think as Darren has exited stage left we're going to take a quick
11:51break and when we come back and we're going to talk all things Crawley Town.
12:06Welcome back to part two and as we mentioned the top of the podcast Crawley Town had a bit
12:10of a nightmare on Saturday at home to Barnsley. They just didn't look at it at all and we're
12:15going to come on to what Lindsay's assessment was afterwards but yeah but I think Barnsley did
12:20smell blood that they thought hang on these guys aren't on it at all and just yeah Barnsley took
12:25them apart. These warning signs were there in like the first minute when Max Watters went through. He
12:30just outpowered, outran, outpaced Joy McKenna and he just hit the outside of the post when one-on-one
12:37with Wolcott so if that had gone in it could have been even worse but yeah Barnsley looked like a
12:43good side though. They were the best side we've seen Crawley come up against and there was a
12:47question at the end of the press conference. Is this the first time you thought God we're in
12:52League One kind of thing and that was my impression that it was like proper big
12:59big northern side who were just they weren't just big and strong they were skillful and they had a
13:06plan and they were organized and it was uh yeah interesting second half was a bit better but
13:10Barnsley sat back they played two up front in the second half which you rarely see with a Lindsay
13:15side and it didn't kind of work it just didn't there wasn't any chances but the positives were
13:20um we saw 45 minutes of Will Swan in the second half new striker from Mansfield he looked good
13:26hard worker good touch um but he'd never really had a sniff at goal so we haven't had a chance to
13:31see what his finishings like but we understand it's very good Scott Lindsay's very excited about
13:36him um and also seeing Harry Forster come on he came on the second half yeah we haven't seen him
13:41since the playoffs last year the semi-second leg of the semi-final against MK Dons I think it was a
13:46fine injury so he he got 45 minutes he lacked a bit of match sharpness but he didn't look more
13:52out of touch than anyone else in that game so um it was uh yeah it was a very very disappointing
13:58performance certainly that first 45 minutes but um yeah I think the break came at a good time
14:04because they had had Saturday Tuesday since the beginning of the season so good little rest for
14:08them now what was Scott Lindsay's view of things after the Barnsley game then Sam shall we come in
14:12have been too pleased he certainly wasn't no he was um not too happy with the performance at all
14:17he basically said his players um can never switch off um which they were guilty of doing and they
14:22played out of control football um which resulted in lack of chances for for Crowley um he said that
14:28some players were still in bed um which um obviously doesn't play well at all uh if you're
14:33going to try and win a game in league one um but yeah he said there's a saying in football where
14:37you can win a game inside 20 minutes but flip the side um and you can also lose one and he felt that
14:42that's that's what happened really they lost the game really quickly and within 20 minutes and left
14:46themselves with too much to do to to turn it around um and he felt that Barnsley came as the
14:51broadfield stadium full of respect and realized the quality of a good team and they had to play
14:56really well to to win and that's exactly what um what happened and they smelt blood and and step
15:01forward and beat us up is the exact words that Lindsay used so yeah he didn't hold back on his
15:06team at all really kind of um for how they performed um he made changes at half time and
15:10tried to play a bit of a different system um but he didn't yeah didn't didn't quite work in the end
15:14really um and he he did point out though that he wants to um recognize that this is still a very
15:19new group of players and they're very inexperienced and very young and obviously it's a new team that
15:24he's trying to build and these results are going to happen and it's still very early on in the
15:28season and we've seen some great signs already um obviously with those wins early on and the
15:33good performance against Brighton as well so yeah I don't think there's any reason to panic and
15:37hopefully they can bounce back quickly from what was a really poor performance and the first
15:42poor performance of the season yeah I think it's worth pointing out as well so yeah as I say
15:46hopefully they can bounce back I do work remembering that was around this time they
15:50lost six nil to Swindon last year yeah and that didn't that didn't matter in the end at all did
15:55it that didn't seem to affect their playoff absolutely fingers crossed um well meanwhile
16:00off the pitch uh the summer transfer window may have closed on Friday but the Reds have still
16:04been very busy in the market uh Crawley Town announced two signings this week the first being
16:08Bradley Ibrahim on Saturday uh the midfielder has joined the Reds on a season-long loan from German
16:13club Hertha Berlin and on paper mark this seems like a bit of a coup for the Reds tell us a little
16:17bit more about Bradley Ibrahim it does yeah he's um I mean I must admit when I first saw it when I
16:22saw Arsenal Academy the first words that sprung into my head was Kevin Betsy but um and I think
16:27that sends a shiver down everybody's spine at Crawley Town but um uh but yeah no I mean on
16:33paper he looks like a really good signing he was um he started at the QPR Youth Academy before
16:37moving to Arsenal and he was there for seven years and he captained Arsenal's under-18 side
16:42to the FA Cup youth final uh in the FA Cup youth final in um 2022-23 season so he's had a couple of
16:50England youth international caps under 18s as well and um he then got a move to Hertha Berlin
16:55um in the Bundesliga um I think they're a Bundesliga two um side he hasn't actually made an
17:00appearance for them yet but he has been playing for their under-23 side so um who knows it could
17:06be a Jadon Sancho Jude Bellingham going over to Germany making his name uh but I think he just
17:13needs obviously experience um he's he's untested at this level um he's untested at professional
17:19men's professional football level so who knows how he'll come up but he's obviously got really
17:24good pedigree and I think um I think Lindsay's quite excited about him so uh someone Lindsay can
17:29coach and sort of make into a man and play men's football absolutely fingers crossed and the Reds
17:35then announced signing of Nigerian international defender Benjamin Tanimu on Monday and this
17:40signing wasn't short of intrigue was it Mark tell us a little bit about the Ian's announce of this
17:44transfer because it seemed quite quite bizarre in a way it was yes um is yeah so on Friday obviously
17:50was deadline day and we were getting rumors that Crawley was signing this player that player Will
17:55Swan was announced etc and then there was a lot of talk about him getting a defender and on Friday
18:00night football live football live.ng a Nigerian football website reported that Crawley had signed
18:08the uh Tanimu from the Tanzanian premier league side Singida Blackstars um nobody had heard of
18:16this player even though he'd he's made he'd made three international caps at this point I think
18:20he's 22 um but nothing was announced from Crawley town and you can all the fans are on going what's
18:27going on and there was silence from the club and um I asked some questions when I went to the game
18:33on Saturday and they said oh there should be an announcement tomorrow um but it was in fact Monday
18:38before it was announced but I think I get the impression signing a Nigerian player from a
18:43Tanzanian side um the the paperwork and the international clearance you need for that is
18:49quite complicated so that's they obviously got the deal done on the Friday but just getting all that
18:55stuff done paperwork clearance etc it took a couple of days um the other thing about it was uh
19:02the the fee because um there was reported that as football and uh football live ng
19:08reported that it was eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars now I think everybody assumed
19:12it was US dollars it wasn't it was Tanzanian dollars and that equates to about three or four
19:16thousand English pounds sterling so um so I think Crawley fans were thinking blimey we've got some
19:21player here if we're spending this much on him and uh yeah so uh again he's got international
19:27caps for Nigeria Nigeria a good side good international side so um hopefully they've got
19:32another young good young player that was going to fit in because they needed a little bit of
19:37um I think Scotland's used the word thickening of their defense because they've got McKainer
19:42Malarkey and Flint who are playing at the moment obviously Dion Conroy's out injured still
19:48um Charlie Barker can play there but still a bit inexperienced at this level so hopefully he'll come
19:53in and be a really good addition to that defense very exciting sign I think if it all pans out um
19:59although the Reds have welcomed two new faces they've also said goodbye to one of their summer
20:04recruits uh who's departed the ball field stadium Sam and why it disappointing to see him leave so
20:10soon obviously turn to his parent club and Bournemouth in there in the Premier League
20:14um and it comes because of a league um and it comes to test it was decided that the best course
20:21of action would be for him to return back to Bournemouth um which is Bournemouth um which is
20:29in obviously a Premier League club's player really um and that just uh yeah just kind of
20:36that just uh yeah just kind of unfortunately we know never got to never got to see what you could
20:41do um in Crawley's shirt um because yeah as I say he's um yeah he's such a shame um and finally
20:48uh as Mark I think mentioned the Reds are without a game this weekend due to the international break
20:52Crawley were due to visit Burton in League One this Saturday but with three members of the Burton
20:56squad being selected for international duty the game was called off however the Reds have had two
21:00members of their squad called up for international duty this week uh which two Crawley stars been
21:05picked for their country's mark and when do they play more importantly well actually it's now free
21:09because of uh Benjamin Tanimu signing yes yes um yeah so um so yeah Jojo Walakot he's been picked
21:15for the Ghana side um they play uh Angola today at 5 p.m that's Thursday if you're watching this
21:22at any point um and then they play Nigeria away on Monday and um Eddie Beach the other goalkeeper
21:28he's um Wales under 21 international and they play Iceland away on Tuesday night so uh both the
21:34goalkeepers we got yeah good pedigree in the goalkeeping uh place and uh Crawley so um and
21:39then um yeah Tanimu as we've mentioned obviously he hasn't played for Crawley yet but he's um on
21:44Saturday he's playing for Nigeria at home against Benin and then they travel to Rwanda on Tuesday so
21:51busy old time not traveling for those um those players over the next few days so uh and they'll
21:56be back when they play Stockport on Saturday September the 14th so um hopefully a good well
22:01rested for the rest of the squad there and a chance for players who have been injured like
22:04Hullahan and Conroy to come back as well absolutely and best of luck to those three
22:08players who are on international duty for Crawley and all the international players
22:11who have been selected for their countries at Brighton um I've written down score predictions
22:15this week is the nation's league are we fast or yeah let's make I'm actually a little bit
22:20intrigued because of the castly element and how he's actually going to play and set up yes so
22:24there is a little bit more interest than the usual um international with England um other than
22:30tournament go on then mark as you are so giddy what is your score positions for Ireland England
22:34then I'm going to go 2-1 against Ireland 2-0 against uh Finland Sam how do you see that
22:40surely six points is a must for England any less than that is a huge disappointment I think so I
22:46think um 3-1 against Ireland and I'll agree 2-0 against Finland and finally Darren um how do you
22:53see that one going well I'd say 2-2 in Ireland Evan Ferguson double for Ireland I think as he's
22:59coming back uh and then yeah they'll beat Finland I should think but no I agree with
23:04Mark I think it will be interesting to see how Lee Carsley sets them all up they've got some nice
23:08young players that they've uh that they've brought in as as well so it'd be be good and just a quick
23:12mention as well the Brighton young Brighton goalkeeper James Beadle he was called up
23:16uh to train with the uh with the with the uh with the first team this uh this he's been
23:21in England international for through all the age groups isn't he I think he has yeah yeah he's
23:26gone up through the youth ranks on loan at Sheffield Wednesday had a really good season
23:30at Sheffield Wednesday he's back there on loan um but yeah just shows the goalkeeping talent
23:35that Brighton have at the moment absolutely excellent well uh thank you very much this
