00:32 - Hello and welcome to Latest TV News.
00:35 My name is Jacob Pannins,
00:36 I'm a reporter for Sussex World,
00:37 and I'm gonna be chatting with sports reporter,
00:39 Frankie Elliott, about all the latest
00:41 from Brighton Hove Albion.
00:42 But first, here are your top stories from across the county.
00:45 Demolition work has started after a devastating fire
00:49 broke out at the Royal Albion Hotel on Brighton Seafront.
00:52 The main fire broke out on July 15th,
00:54 although a smaller blaze had to be contained
00:56 on Friday, July 21st.
00:58 Demolition had started on Thursday, July 20th,
01:01 and Brighton Hove City Council anticipates
01:03 that this could take between two to three weeks to complete.
01:06 The council explained that the demolition
01:07 is to help the fire services access to the site,
01:10 as parts of the building are no longer structurally safe.
01:13 A Coast Guard helicopter was called to assist
01:15 with the search for a boy who jumped into the water
01:18 after being detained by police at Brighton Pier.
01:20 Sussex Police said two boys, aged 16,
01:22 and another boy, aged 17, were arrested
01:25 following a report of a fight on Brighton Palace Pier
01:27 at 7.15 p.m. on Thursday, July 20th.
01:31 Two of the boys were detained by officers,
01:33 but one jumped into the water and was arrested
01:35 when he swam ashore, according to police.
01:37 Police said all three boys were arrested
01:39 on suspicion of assault, affray, and criminal damage,
01:41 and were bailed until dates in mid-October,
01:43 pending further investigation.
01:45 The heartbroken family of a 12-year-old boy
01:48 from Hastings has paid tribute
01:49 following his unexpected death.
01:52 Dylan Davis, who attended Hastings Academy,
01:54 died on July 11th following a tragic accident
01:56 at home four days earlier,
01:58 according to his stepfather, Phil Tong.
02:01 Phil said Dylan, of Parker Road,
02:02 was an incredibly caring, fun boy who loved to help others.
02:06 Dylan's family are raising money
02:08 for St. George's Hospital in London,
02:10 as that is where he received treatment
02:11 after being airlifted to the site.
02:13 The GoFundMe page has raised £8,700 so far.
02:18 Two men have been charged on suspicion
02:19 of causing grievous bodily harm
02:21 following a serious collision in Hastings.
02:24 Sussex Police said the incident happened
02:25 in Frederick Road at 2.45 p.m. on Thursday, July 20th,
02:30 as two teenage boys, aged 13 and 14,
02:32 suffered significant injuries and were taken to hospital.
02:35 Following the incident, police said Dylan Beeching,
02:37 23, unemployed of Grand Prairie Eastbourne,
02:40 and Liam Hyde, 21, a retail sales assistant
02:42 of Ashford Road, Hastings, were arrested and charged
02:45 with two counts of causing grievous bodily harm.
02:48 Beeching was also charged
02:49 with driving without valid insurance
02:51 and driving otherwise than in accordance
02:52 with a licence, police added.
02:54 Officers said they appeared before Hastings Magistrates Court
02:57 on Saturday, July 22nd,
02:59 and were remanded in custody to appear
03:00 before Lewis Crown Court on August the 18th.
03:03 People's spirits were not dampened despite the poor weather
03:07 as residents and visitors enjoyed the opening
03:09 of a pop-up park in Eastbourne.
03:11 The event on Saturday, July the 22nd,
03:13 which involved closing the seafront end
03:15 of terminus road to traffic,
03:16 allowed businesses to spill out onto the street.
03:19 The pop-up park will run for six weeks,
03:21 closing on September 3rd,
03:23 with weekends being dedicated
03:24 to live music and entertainment.
03:27 New research has revealed that five beaches in Sussex
03:30 have some of the warmest waters in England and Wales.
03:33 The team at outdoor clothing company Millet's found
03:35 that Bognor Regis has the third warmest water
03:37 with its peak temperature being 17.8 degrees.
03:40 Worthing is joint fourth with 17.7 degrees,
03:43 Hastings is seventh with 17.6 degrees,
03:46 and Eastbourne and Littlehampton are joint eighth
03:48 with 17.4 degrees.
03:50 The study found that Clacton Beach in Essex
03:52 has the warmest waters with 18.2 degrees.
03:55 - Hiya, today I am with Frankie Elliott,
03:57 our sports reporter,
03:58 and we're gonna be talking about Brighton Hove Albion
04:00 in this sports special.
04:02 And in the first half, we're gonna be talking
04:03 about their pre-season friendly against Chelsea
04:05 and how some of the new players have been integrating.
04:08 So, Frankie, what did you make
04:09 of that friendly against Chelsea the other day?
04:11 - Well, it was certainly entertaining.
04:13 Seven goals, a red card,
04:15 a team they have no love lost for,
04:18 a team in Chelsea that they have tried to sign
04:21 one of their players, Levi Colwell,
04:23 who was on loan at Brighton last year,
04:25 was playing for Chelsea in this friendly
04:26 despite links with him moving back to the South Coast.
04:30 And also, of course, Moises Quesada,
04:32 the Brighton midfielder,
04:33 who has been linked with Chelsea throughout this summer,
04:36 he was not involved at all.
04:38 So it's a club with a lot of history,
04:39 obviously Graeme Potter and Marco Curella,
04:42 two of Brighton's head coach and Brighton's best player,
04:45 left to join Chelsea last season as well.
04:47 So there's been a lot of to and fro
04:48 between the two teams,
04:49 and you could tell that had spoiled onto the pitch
04:52 because it was a very aggressive friendly
04:54 with lots going on, lots of big tackles going in
04:56 for what should be a non-competitive game,
04:59 but certainly signs that Brighton can still compete
05:02 with the big boys going into next season
05:04 because they put in a really, really good performance
05:06 against a very strong Chelsea team.
05:08 - And the fact that it did kind of spoil over
05:10 and you could see that passion
05:11 and that emotion with the players,
05:12 do you see that as a quite good thing
05:13 that they're still, despite it being a friendly
05:15 and despite they've got a lot of games
05:16 coming up this season,
05:17 they still had that fire to keep going
05:19 and to sort of prove a point to Chelsea as well,
05:21 considering their history?
05:22 - Absolutely.
05:23 I think De Zerbis has always spoken about the fact
05:26 the mentality of the squad needs to be
05:28 that of an elite club.
05:29 And I think playing like that in a game,
05:32 in a friendly game,
05:33 shows that he has installed that really well.
05:36 They're not taking it as just a fitness exercise.
05:40 They're not taking it as an opportunity
05:41 just to stretch out their legs.
05:43 They're seeing it as an opportunity
05:44 to get one over a team that they feel
05:46 they want to be competing with again next year.
05:48 And I have to say,
05:49 they were down to 10 men for most of the second half
05:52 and went down to four, one down as well
05:54 with about 15 minutes to play.
05:56 And most teams in that situation,
05:57 given the circumstances that it's a pre-season game,
06:00 would just sort of keel over and say,
06:02 "Okay, we'll take the beating here.
06:04 "We'll take the drubbing because it doesn't matter."
06:05 But Brighton refused to do that.
06:07 Scored two late goals
06:08 and could have easily got an equaliser as well,
06:11 despite the one man advantage for Chelsea.
06:14 And yeah, that shows real character
06:16 and a real great sign for what's to come this season.
06:20 - And a couple of players were making
06:21 their debut for Brighton.
06:23 What did you make of some of their performances?
06:24 De Bruggen, De Hoed, Pedro.
06:27 What did you think of them?
06:28 - Yeah, no, there was some really strong showings.
06:30 For De Hoed, he started the game
06:32 and obviously that's a big role he's taking over.
06:35 He's sort of coming into that
06:36 as the replacement for Alexis McAllister,
06:38 who was so brilliant in Brighton's midfield last year.
06:41 But he looked like he slotted in really well,
06:43 really obviously technically proficient.
06:44 So his passing looked really good, his slick passing,
06:47 picking the ball up from the back line
06:49 and moving it into the forwards line
06:51 with ease, passing the ball with both feet.
06:53 And looked to take up some really nice positions as well
06:56 and looked very controlled,
06:57 keeping the tempo ticking for Brighton.
06:59 So he looks like he's been a good addition.
07:02 Gyal Pedra came on in the second half
07:04 and he looked excellent.
07:05 He looked like a real threat to the Chelsea back line
07:07 every time he picked up the ball.
07:09 He's very quick.
07:10 He's got very good close control dribbling
07:11 and he won the penalty with about 15 minutes to go
07:15 and obviously scored that penalty as well.
07:16 So he's got his first Brighton goal.
07:19 And then also provided a lovely assist,
07:20 again, taking on a number of Chelsea players
07:22 on that left-hand side
07:24 and provided the assist for Denis Undab's goal,
07:26 which was the third goal for Brighton.
07:28 So those two looked great.
07:30 Verbruggen also played 45 minutes as well.
07:31 It's good to see him and see what he was about.
07:34 He obviously came in and did that goalkeeping role
07:36 excellently as playing with the ball at his feet,
07:39 as well as being the classic shot stopper.
07:41 And there was also some opportunities
07:42 for some younger players as well.
07:43 Jack Hinslewood, the 18-year-old youth team prospect,
07:47 he played it right back and impressed a number of people.
07:49 De Zerby was impressed by his performance.
07:51 Adam Lallana, the experienced midfielder
07:53 in the Albion squad, he said he looked right at home
07:56 against Premier League opposition.
07:58 So there's some really good signs going forward
07:59 for some new players coming to this Brighton squad.
08:02 - And obviously going into the Europa League campaign
08:04 next season, more games at hand,
08:06 how important is it that these younger players do step up?
08:08 And it might only be 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there,
08:11 but how important is it that they take those opportunities
08:13 and they fit in to fill in those gaps?
08:16 Brighton could probably do with a couple of players as well.
08:17 How important is it that they fill those gaps?
08:19 - Oh, it's vital.
08:20 I think, you know, if you look at any squad,
08:22 even the best squads in the world,
08:24 you look at Manchester City, for instance,
08:25 you'll see a number of youth team prospects
08:27 on the bench for Champions League games,
08:30 League Cup games, FA Cup games,
08:31 either starting them or coming on for the last 15, 20 minutes.
08:35 And it's vital that they can rely on those players
08:37 because obviously it's a cost-effective way
08:39 of filling up your squad.
08:40 It's also a good way of giving
08:41 these young players experience.
08:43 It's also important to the team
08:45 because it gives those key players a rest for them.
08:48 You know, 20 minutes doesn't seem like long,
08:49 but in a highly competitive game
08:51 where it's a very physically demanding game,
08:53 as we know, at the highest level,
08:55 to have those moments where you can take off your players
08:57 and put on a youth team player
08:58 who can not disrupt the game too much is vital.
09:02 So the signs are there.
09:03 There's a couple of there in the Brighton squad
09:05 that could do that role.
09:06 Jack Hemswood, as I said, looks like one.
09:08 Ed Turns looks like another.
09:10 Wherever they would prefer to go out on loan
09:12 and play more first-team football is yet to be seen.
09:15 But an opportunity is definitely there
09:17 for some European experience,
09:18 for some domestic experience as well,
09:20 and some Premier League experience,
09:22 which can't be turned down
09:23 because that'd be great for those young boys.
09:25 - And obviously going back to some of the new signings,
09:27 how Pedro played, you know,
09:29 Brighton's most expensive ever transfer.
09:31 What did you, do you think he's worth the money?
09:32 Do you think this is the marquee signing
09:34 that Brighton needed this summer?
09:35 - Yeah, it looks like it could be the real deal.
09:38 I think there are some question marks
09:40 about spending 30 million on a player
09:42 that had never really proven it at Premier League level.
09:44 He had been a good player for Watford in the championship,
09:47 but to spend 30 million on someone
09:48 that's not really scored many goals in the Premier League,
09:50 that raises some questions.
09:52 But from what we saw on Saturday
09:54 and what we have seen as well with him in the championship,
09:56 he looks like he could be a real threat to many teams
09:59 and bolsters that attacking line for Brighton
10:01 because at the end of last season,
10:03 we saw a number of those players start to just drift off
10:06 because of the amount of games they were playing
10:07 in such quick succession.
10:08 Matoma was one of Brighton's best players
10:10 at the start of last season,
10:11 but he lost his form towards the last three months.
10:14 So to have someone like Pedro that can slot in
10:16 as either a striker to support Evan Ferguson
10:19 or Danny Welbeck, or even to play out from the left,
10:21 so to give Matoma a run for his money is a real benefit.
10:26 And like I said, it creates competition,
10:28 which is always good in elite squads,
10:31 but it also gives an opportunity for,
10:33 if there are people that are out of form or need a rest,
10:35 he can come in and make the difference as well.
10:37 So I really hope he can be a star player
10:40 for Brighton going into next season.
10:42 - Thanks, Frankie.
10:42 That's everything from us in part one.
10:45 Make sure you tune into part two,
10:46 as we'll be talking about some of the players
10:48 who might be coming in and going out
10:49 of Brighton this summer.
10:50 (dramatic music)

11:30 - Hello and welcome back to part two of Latest TV News.
11:34 I've got Frankie Elliott with me here,
11:36 and we're gonna be talking about some of the players
11:38 who might be coming in and going out
11:39 of Brighton and Hove Albion this summer.
11:41 So Frankie, the name that everyone's talking about
11:43 across the footballing world right now
11:45 is Moises Quesada.
11:46 What's happening there?
11:48 - So from what we can understand,
11:50 Chelsea are the only real contenders
11:52 to sign Moises Quesada, who does want to leave Brighton.
11:56 They've had two bids so far,
11:57 Brighton from Chelsea for Quesado.
12:00 The latest one being around 70 million pounds.
12:03 The first one I believe was about 60 odd million pounds.
12:06 This is nowhere near Brighton's valuation of Quesado,
12:09 so they were both rejected.
12:10 Brighton see Quesado to be worth around 100 million.
12:14 This is because of the recent sale of Declan Rice,
12:16 the West Ham captain, for around 106 million pounds
12:19 to Arsenal.
12:21 Brighton believe Quesado is as good,
12:24 if not better than Declan Rice,
12:26 pointing to the fact that he's also a number of years
12:28 younger than the England international.
12:30 So they believe around 100 million pounds for Quesado
12:33 is what they deserve.
12:34 So talks are still ongoing between Chelsea and Brighton.
12:37 I don't think many people expect it to be 100 million pounds
12:40 for the eventual transfer because Quesado,
12:42 his camp is wanting this deal to be completed quickly.
12:45 Obviously pre-season has already started
12:47 and they want him to be working with the new Chelsea boss,
12:49 Mauricio Pochettino, as quickly as possible.
12:51 So a deal we believe is going to be completed this week,
12:57 I'd imagine it'd be around 85 to 95 million pounds,
13:01 so not far away from the 100 million pound valuation
13:04 they have of Quesado and certainly a big profit
13:06 from the 4 million pounds they spent on to bring him in
13:09 in 2021.
13:11 But yeah, it has taken longer than Quesado would have wanted
13:15 and probably Brighton and Chelsea would have wanted as well.
13:18 But this is due to the difference in opinions
13:20 on how much Quesado is worth,
13:21 but we are close to reaching a deal, we believe.
13:24 And obviously Brighton have already made a few signings,
13:26 but they get in this 80 to 100 million pounds,
13:29 it opens a lot of doors for them financially.
13:31 What positions do you think they should enhance with that money
13:33 and what players specifically do you think they could come in
13:36 to not only replace Quesado,
13:37 but improve the team with that extra money?
13:39 Yeah, so Brighton have never been one to be gun-ho
13:41 with any money they've accumulated from transfers.
13:44 Obviously, we've seen a number of players leave
13:46 for big money moves in recent years.
13:48 And that's just been spread around the squad well
13:52 by getting players that are still of that sort of bracket
13:54 of emerging talents, but snapping them up for cheap prices,
13:59 but in a number of different positions.
14:01 I imagine Brighton will continue to do that.
14:03 However, Roberto Di Zerbi, the Brighton manager,
14:06 said on Saturday following their pre-season game with Chelsea,
14:09 he was obviously asked a lot about Quesado.
14:11 And he was very adamant they need to find someone
14:13 of Quesado's quality to replace him if he is sold
14:17 because of their quest in the Europa League this year.
14:20 Whether they are willing to spend that amount of money,
14:23 so we would imagine someone of Quesado's quality,
14:25 we are saying someone that is in the 40 to 50 million pound region,
14:29 that would break Brighton's transfer record fee.
14:31 So whether they jump the gun so quickly
14:34 and spend the money straight away is yet to be seen.
14:37 I'm sure that's what Di Zerbi would want.
14:39 I don't think the board would be willing to do that.
14:41 They already have a number of midfield options this season
14:43 due to Steven Alzate returning from loan,
14:46 James Milner being signed and Mahoud Dehoud also being signed as well.
14:50 So they've actually got a number of midfielders already at the club,
14:54 but not probably to the same level as Quesado.
14:56 So there's a bit of discrepancy about what the manager wants
14:58 and what the club wants.
15:00 So it'll be interesting to see how the money is used.
15:03 And obviously Moises Quesado plays a really, really unique role
15:06 in that whole of midfielder where he's quite active,
15:08 he can move around quite easily.
15:09 And, you know, for example,
15:11 you've compared him to the Declan Rice transfer.
15:12 And Declan Rice is a player who plays a similar position,
15:16 but plays a very, very different role.
15:17 How difficult do you think it's going to be to replace a player like Quesado?
15:21 Very, very difficult.
15:22 I mean, when they say they want to find someone of Quesado's quality,
15:25 I don't think they'll be able to do that.
15:26 He's sort of a once in a blue moon player
15:29 just for the fact that he is so good at the defensive side of the game.
15:33 Very much the Angolo-Kante stuff of breaking up play.
15:36 His tackling is immaculate and his reading of the game is brilliant.
15:39 So to have all those qualities, plus the fact he's very good on the ball,
15:43 his energy levels and athleticism is excellent.
15:45 He's basically the all-round midfielder, a ball-winning midfielder,
15:48 but also a box-to-box and a bit of a playmaker as well.
15:51 So he's got all those qualities which are very, very difficult to find
15:54 and hence why they value him so highly at the club
15:57 and also why teams like Chelsea are wanting to sign him.
16:00 So the next player that comes in for the money that they get from Quesado
16:05 has got big shoes to fill and is very, very unlikely to fill them.
16:08 So it's not a case of signing someone like Quesado
16:11 because I don't think that's possible,
16:12 but maybe a player who has got one of those qualities but excels at it
16:17 and maybe with a bit more experience than Quesado, who's only 21,
16:21 may be the best way to go about it
16:22 because it's very difficult to find someone like that again
16:25 in Brighton's price range anyway.
16:27 And we've just spoken about Brighton not wanting to rush.
16:29 You know, they don't want to pull that trigger before
16:31 they're absolutely certain that they want that player on their team.
16:34 But I guess you've got the issue of West Ham also looking for a player
16:36 in the same position.
16:37 You know, West Ham also competing in the Europa League next season.
16:40 Do you think that might spur Brighton on to maybe move quicker
16:43 than they would have done if they did have a bit more time
16:45 and not that competition?
16:47 Well, that's the thing.
16:47 I mean, if you look at all the stories at the moment,
16:50 the two when you see a centre mid who is linked with a move away,
16:53 someone like Scott McTominay at Manchester United
16:56 or Conor Gallagher at Chelsea,
16:57 the two first clubs you see are West Ham and Brighton
17:00 because they're both looking to replace their talismanic midfielders.
17:05 You would imagine that Brighton have a different policy to West Ham.
17:10 So that would maybe, they wouldn't be sort of led into a sort of competition
17:14 just because they see West Ham are more active in looking to sign someone
17:18 in this transfer window.
17:20 But they may have an eye on what West Ham are doing
17:24 because at the end of the day, if there's a player that they need
17:27 and they see that West Ham are also in the same position,
17:29 they may want to act quicker and they want to be smarter.
17:32 And they also want to keep their head coach happy
17:34 because De Serbi is looking to take Brighton into that next level
17:37 of not just being a small club that is competing above its weight,
17:41 he wants to take them into being a club that regularly competes at that level.
17:44 So to sign players like Conor Gallagher, like Scott McTominay,
17:48 who have had big club experience and have had international experience as well,
17:52 that is a sort of landmark signing that he's looking to make,
17:55 hence why they've been linked so heavily with Levi Colwell,
17:58 one of the most exciting centre-back talents in European football
18:02 who's currently playing at Chelsea.
18:04 So it's an interesting development to see whether Brighton
18:07 are willing to take the plunge, so to speak,
18:09 because West Ham I'm sure will.
18:10 They are very much happy to spend that sort of money quite quickly.
18:14 And I guess also with Brighton, with the way things are going at the moment,
18:16 obviously things are looking good.
18:17 You've got European football and like you said,
18:20 De Serbi wants to establish them as a top, top club in England.
18:23 So does the board as well.
18:24 Do you think they'll rush to try and do that?
18:26 Because I guess there's the fear that, you know, you might spend big money,
18:28 it doesn't pay off, or will you try and find another Casado
18:31 from maybe South America or Eastern Europe where you spend four million
18:34 and it's going to take three or four years to actually come to fruition?
18:37 Do you think that's something they might lean towards
18:39 and not rush for that European spot?
18:40 Or will they just want to quickly get in a big player
18:42 so they can establish themselves as soon as possible as a big team?
18:46 It's hard to call in the centre-mid role because their first priority
18:49 at the moment is signing a left-sided centre-back.
18:52 This is the eagle we've heard from Fiorentina.
18:55 That deal is going to be completed sometime this week,
18:57 a £15 million deal for a left-footed centre-back
19:00 who's had European experience.
19:02 That's going to be the first deal through the door.
19:04 Their next one, according to what we've heard, is a winger.
19:07 They want to get a winger, either right or left side,
19:09 to add more depth in the attack.
19:12 The Cole Palmer from Manchester City is the player
19:14 that's most closely linked with a deal for that,
19:16 although we're not sure whether that can be a loan move or a transfer.
19:20 So in regards to how they want to play the centre-midfield situation,
19:25 it's too early to say.
19:26 I think we'll understand a lot more once the Casado deal is done.
19:30 They will probably see how the first couple of games go in the season
19:34 before making their next move because if Billy Gilmore or Stephen Alzate
19:38 step up to the role or Mahoud Dehoud and they see that they are more than
19:41 competent at keeping Brighton at the high levels they have been for the last two seasons,
19:46 then they won't need to dip into the market.
19:48 If Luton Town pull them apart and they seem to be shipping goals
19:51 because they can't control the game,
19:53 then the panic button might be reached a little bit quicker.
19:55 So there's a lot of moving parts at the moment at Brighton
19:59 in regards to how they tackle the next couple of weeks.
20:02 They've got two things they want to sort out, a defender and a winger.
20:05 They've got that defender now, the winger I'm sure they'll go for next
20:08 and then the centre-midfield thing will look after itself once a couple of factors
20:12 have been sorted out such as whether the current squad is good enough
20:15 and how they're competing when they're back in the Premier League.
20:18 And obviously you touched on Igor who might be joining the club in the next couple of weeks.
20:22 What can Brighton fans expect from him if he does sign?
20:25 They've got a very, very athletic defender who is very comfortable on the ball.
20:29 If anyone watched Serie A or even the Conference League last year,
20:32 they would have seen him driving into midfield with ease and confidence.
20:35 He's a very quick centre-back who likes to be on the ball
20:38 and likes to drive and take it into attacking areas.
20:42 So they've got someone that suits that deservey style of play
20:44 of being intricate, short passes and everyone being comfortable on the ball
20:48 and having the ball in tight areas.
20:50 He will definitely suit that.
20:52 He's also a very tall centre-back who would like to be involved in set pieces
20:55 and does grab a number of goals each season from those situations.
20:59 So he seems to be slotting in perfectly.
21:01 He could be the perfect partner to Lewis Dunk.
21:04 Obviously Dunk is getting older and his speed is not what it once was.
21:09 But both very tall centre-backs which suit the Premier League style of play
21:14 but also suit deservey style of play because they'll both be ball-playing centre-backs,
21:18 which is what he has desired since he came to the club.
21:20 And do you think Igor will be a player who will start for Brighton week in or week out?
21:23 Or do you think Webster might give him a bit of a run for his money there?
21:26 Well you can never say.
21:28 Obviously someone like Webster has been great for the club,
21:30 especially for the last two, three years.
21:32 But because Igor is a naturally left-footed player,
21:35 that just gives the team a bit more balance.
21:37 That's what Levi Carwell offered so well last year because he was also left-footed.
21:41 So I think that stands Igor in good stead to be the regular starter for Brighton
21:45 going forward from next season.
21:47 Brilliant. Thanks for that Frankie.
