Gary Stead feels that New Zealand cricket team performed incredibly well Vs Sri Lanka in their recent tour at Colombo. The Black Caps did a clean sweep of the three-match T20 series against the Lankans. The Kiwis also won one fixture of the two-match Test series. Stead praised Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner, who were incredible with the ball in the series. He also had some good words for Colin de Grandhomme, who hogged the limelight due to his batting skills.

00:00 to depart Colombo, I think we've been here six weeks now. A summary of the tour from
00:04 your perspective as the coach?
00:06 Look, I mean it was great to get a test win over in Sri Lanka and it's exciting I think
00:11 that we can pick up 60 test points as well. And then the T20s are late, it was nice to
00:16 pick up a serious victory against Sri Lanka, they're a good team and they, I mean they're
00:21 hard to beat over here and I thought we performed really, really well. We had a couple of run,
00:25 well we had three run chases all up but two of them were higher scoring. I think we managed
00:31 to get our second highest score in history in chasing at 175 which was fantastic as well
00:36 so really pleased with those efforts.
00:39 Some good individual efforts in the T20s as well, the likes of Tim, Colin, Mitchell?
00:44 Yeah I thought Tim and Mitch in particular were outstanding with the ball. They were,
00:49 I guess they were our rocks that we could build our game plan around. Colin batted beautifully
00:54 and he I guess showed a different side of his game that it wasn't just necessary power
00:59 but he also had some, well the ability to work the ball around and he was involved in
01:05 a couple of key partnerships throughout.
01:07 Mitchell Zentner up to number five in the latest T20I rankings, I feel like that's pretty
01:12 justified?
01:13 Yeah I think he's bowled really well and not just over this tour, over a long period of
01:17 time and I mean Mitch is, not only with his bowling in this series but also his batting
01:23 show the key and he finished two games in two or three balls and managed to hit the
01:28 ball out of the park and it's not only internationally he's done that in the IPL as well and I think
01:33 he's really learning to play that finishing role for us which is great.
01:36 Can you give people back home a bit of an idea of what it was like at the Pallor Kelly
01:40 Stadium there? I mean it was pretty incredible atmosphere wasn't it?
01:43 Well just doing some chats with some of the guys there, the likes of Seth Rance and Tom
01:47 Bruce who perhaps haven't been in this environment a lot and they talk about the noise and the
01:51 level of noise out there that you just couldn't hear anything, couldn't hear anyone and that's
01:55 really exciting to be part of and we don't get that very often at home unless you're
01:59 playing I guess at Eden Park or a big international like that so I mean pretty cool for them and
02:04 it was a great experience here as well, the Sri Lankans certainly love their cricket and
02:08 they got right in behind it.
02:09 They talked before the tour about this sort of being, setting the new cycle, you know
02:14 new T20 cycle, new players getting introduced, are you happy with what you got out of the
02:18 series in that respect?
02:19 Yeah I think we learnt a lot, I mean we rested a few key players as well, Kane and Trent
02:24 both didn't play who you would probably expect to be part of the squad and that was important
02:29 for us to see different guys in different situations as well so I mean all in all we
02:35 had a number of injuries which was a challenge but I guess put that aside we had some results
02:40 that I guess were tight, all three games were tight games and could have gone either way
02:45 and it was good to come out on the right side of two of them.
02:48 It was a pretty quick turnaround after the World Cup, a bit of a break coming up for
02:51 the team and the coaching staff, are you well needed?
02:55 Yeah I think so, I mean it's something that's really important that we manage that, I think
03:00 the World Cup took a lot out of everyone and just mentally I guess more so than physically
03:04 and then you're away for another five or six weeks and the start of the Test Championship
03:09 so whilst that brought a new focus it doesn't necessarily take away the feeling of tiredness
03:15 at times and being on the road being tough so it's important that the guys mentally have
03:19 a break now and I guess get ready for what's coming up as a massive summer at home with
03:24 England first and then obviously Australia and India as well.
03:27 Yeah.
03:28 Yeah.
03:28 Yeah.
03:29 Yeah.
