00:30Out of the
00:57early days of our western frontier have come many legends. Some of these stories are based
01:03on fact. Others, no doubt, were conceived in the minds of grizzled old prospectors,
01:08too long alone in the hot barren wastes, consumed by their one dream, the dream of finding gold.
01:15Each one convinced that he would one day hit the biggest bonanza of all. Many of these
01:20stories, as you know, concerned Indians. They were the large tribes or nations in Arizona,
01:27such as the Apache, the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, Papago, and many more.
01:34California's Indians were divided into smaller tribes. There were a good many of these groups
01:40that were all but extinct when the first Spaniard landed. Most of them were far more primitive
01:45than their brothers in other territories. Their culture was that of the Stone Age.
01:52This story deals with the last days of one such tribe. Already small when Spain first
01:58claimed California as her own, their numbers steadily dwindled as they waged an unending
02:03war against the white man. They refused to be converted to Christianity by the Padres
02:08of the missions. The white man was their mortal enemy, to be killed on sight. While their
02:15number was decreasing, the number of their enemy was increasing. The Anglo or Yankee
02:21had migrated west and was embarked upon the feverish search for gold.
02:28The remnants of this tribe had been driven back into the hills in an area which was thought
02:32to be rich in gold. Individual prospectors and parties of men had gone into these hills
02:37never to return. There came a time when the only remaining members of this tribe were
02:44women. Their men had been all killed in their ceaseless battle with the white men or had
02:49died of pestilence. Ironically, the leader of these women was herself white. She had
02:57been captured as a baby, and the only reason she had been spared was the fact that her
03:02hair was the color of yellow gold. To the superstitious minds of these primitive people,
03:08this was a symbol. She had been sent to them by the sun god, and they treated her as a
03:13goddess as she grew to young womanhood. Since she had known nothing but the ways of these
03:18Indians, their enemy became her enemy, and she fought and killed her own people. This
03:24is a story of one party of white men and one white woman who, in their search for gold,
03:31encountered these Amazons of the west.
03:37You could fill bags with it. Well, there's spots in that creek where the nuggets just reflect the sun at you.
03:45Why, talk on it, man. You must be the richest man in this whole territory, where you've
03:50got all them bags of gold here. I had them bags of gold, mister, but don't you think
03:55for one blame minute them ornery redskins was gonna let me take them out? Lucky to be
04:01standing right here. Plum lucky. Just cut out with my eye. I never even got out with
04:09the price of a drink. When you planned on going back, ain't rational to let all that
04:16gold just go to waste. Just as soon as I get me a grub steak and a party of men what's
04:22men, and ain't afraid to take on the Indians, I'm going back. Just you believe that, mister.
04:28Why, talk on it, man. Ain't we been believing you for the past five years now?
04:39Hey, Pan, come on back and get your drink.
05:04What's going on down there?
05:05Oh, that's the boys. They have quite a time with Pan.
05:08Pan?
05:10Pan Tiger. That's Pan. Pan for Panhandler.
05:14I don't know what his name is.
05:17What about this story he's telling about the gold?
05:21I don't reckon you've been around here very long, have you, mister?
05:26Potter. Mowby Potter. The wife and I just got in yesterday afternoon. We're staying
05:31at the Harley Gordy now.
05:33Oh, that explains everything. Yeah, Pan, he's been telling that story around for years.
05:38I'm surprised he hasn't already told you the story. You know, strangers are his best
05:43customers.
05:45He sure tells it like it was the truth.
05:48He's been telling that story so long, I think he believes it now.
05:52Yeah, I guess it could be that way. Now, what do you have?
05:55Oh, nothing, thank you. I'm not a drinking man.
05:59In fact, his wife doesn't allow it.
06:02I was going to ask you if you knew of some little business a man might get into.
06:08You get to hear about everything that goes on in town.
06:12Well, if you've got the right kind of money, I happen to know that you can pick this place right up.
06:18You put some music out there, and you'll get some nice shapely entertainers.
06:27And then you cut that red-eye in half with, you know, cheap alcohol.
06:33Of course, with me as a partner, you know, sort of keep an eye on things around here for you.
06:40Mister, you'll be riding high on the horse.
06:44Well, how much will it take to happen?
06:46Five thousand.
06:47Oh, no, no, no, you're talking way over my head. I haven't got that kind of money.
06:53Well, mister, you go out there and see old Pan, and for a few dollars, he'll make you rich.
07:06So, how much will it take to outfit for three months?
07:11Well, dang well, it depends on how many you've got in the party.
07:13Now, to get in and out of Gold Creek, that's the name I gave it, you know,
07:17you've got to have upwards to six or seven guns.
07:20Well, what would we need with all of those guns?
07:22There'd only be two or three of us.
07:24Blast it all, man, I'm talking men. Six or seven of us, what can handle guns?
07:31Well, isn't that cutting the gold a little thin?
07:33Oh, it'd take a small army to cut that kind of gold in.
07:38I've never seen such gold in all your born days.
07:42Oh, all right, all right. Now, plan on six or seven.
07:45How much for three months?
07:47Well, let's say by the time you figure horses,
07:54guns,
07:57grub,
08:00ammunition,
08:03a little liquor,
08:05a little liquor.
08:11You got a tab to say a thousand dollars?
08:15You might be able to see that down a bit.
08:18You can't. If you was to round up a party, what'd it share expenses?
08:23Yeah, yeah, that might be the way.
08:26I'd hate to pay the whole bill to make somebody else rich.
08:31Who is Pam Taggart?
08:33He's that prospector I told you about. The one that knows about the gold.
08:39I sent you out to try and talk a deal with the owner of the saloon,
08:44and you come back without talking to him.
08:47Another gall to tell me you wasted your time talking to a stupid old fool?
08:52But, but Ruby...
08:54I want that saloon. Do you understand?
08:58For once in my life, I want to be somebody.
09:01I want to run that place and be the queen of the beehive,
09:06and have all the people come to me for favors.
09:10I want to make money.
09:13Big money.
09:14Ruby, Ruby, you just said it. That's exactly what's been on my mind. Big money.
09:19Well, then go out and buy the saloon.
09:22Ruby, honey, forget about that saloon for a minute. That's not what I'm talking about.
09:27Besides, if you were to be the queen around a place like that, honey, I just couldn't stand it.
09:32All those men pawing at you.
09:37Ruby, honey, listen to me.
09:39Hear me out just this once.
09:42Now, we both want big money, but I'm telling you again,
09:46I just haven't got the wherewithal to buy a place like that.
09:50Before you married me, you sold out a freighting business in Illinois.
09:55What did you do with the money?
09:58Well, I sold out the place because I couldn't make a go of it.
10:03Now, if you've got a place that isn't doing very well, you're not going to get very much for it, are you?
10:08Now, Ruby, listen.
10:10This tiger swears up and down that the gold is there, and I believe him.
10:15Why?
10:17Well, if it wasn't there, say he made up this whole story just to mooch a bottle in some food.
10:25He wouldn't be willing to risk his life now, would he?
10:28Much less three months of hard work and a long trip.
10:31Oh, no, no, no, he can get a bottle of food a lot easier than that.
10:37Where is this gold supposed to be?
10:40At a place he calls Gold Creek.
10:42It's deep in Indian territory.
10:45Now, honey, it's no picnic to get there, but we can be rich, real stinking rich.
10:50And we won't have to sweat it out in that lousy saloon for the next 15 years.
10:55Listen, Ruby.
10:57All we have to do is bag it up.
11:00Bags of gold.
11:06Look, Mike.
11:08It's just a matter of time before some joker will drift in from Texas and spot us.
11:12When that happens, we're either on the run or rotting in jail.
11:16Now, listen, Wade.
11:18You know I never had no stomach for battling injuries.
11:21Whoever says we're going to have to get to where we have to battle, huh?
11:24You mean we just...
11:25No, I mean we're getting 300 apiece cash.
11:29We're getting grub and plenty of ammunition.
11:32When we decide to cut our own trail, you tell me who's going to stop us.
11:37Well, 300 ain't much of a stake.
11:40Not unless you're planning on going in for that gold by yourself, Cotton.
11:44No, I'm not.
11:46But I figure friend Potter for the rest of it, real good stake.
11:50Potter's the only fool I know who'll believe that, Jack.
11:55Oh, how do, Mr. Potter.
11:57It's a friend of mine, Mike Horton.
11:59He's in on the deal.
12:01Howdy.
12:02Well, good.
12:04Oh, those other two men you told me about, they don't want to come in.
12:08Looks like we'll have to spend some more time getting the party up to full force.
12:12Potter, I gave you two days.
12:15You're up.
12:16Either we go now or it's going to cost you $2,000 for me and Horton.
12:21I just haven't got that kind of money, Condon.
12:25Party's up to five.
12:27Either we go now or we don't go.
12:30Well, maybe we should just forget the whole thing.
12:34But, well, Taggart, you're not going to like going in short-handed.
12:37Well, you just tell Taggart that Condon and me make up four men.
12:42Yeah, could be.
12:45Could be.
13:15As we gained the top of the pass, I couldn't help but take a last look at the town.
13:36There was a feeling of security down there.
13:39Well, ahead of us...
13:41Ah, but Ruby, with Ruby it was different.
13:44All she wanted to know was whether I was coming or not.
13:48When I told her that it might be a long time before we saw the town again,
13:52she looked off a moment.
13:54Then said, we'll see it again.
13:57I hope.
14:06Hey, pass!
14:07Oh, Tony, pass!
14:14When do you plan on stopping for the night?
14:17Ruby and I aren't up to this type of travel.
14:19We're beginning to hurt.
14:21You city people ain't quite up to Penn, Taggart, are you?
14:24Well, reckon I should take it fairly easy on you,
14:27because when we hit engine country, you're going to need all the fish you can muster.
14:32There's water a couple of miles ahead.
14:34We'll make camp when we hit it.
14:38Are we going to take over this outfit tonight?
14:41It's probably been a day out.
14:43Too risky.
14:45Besides, I...
14:47I have to look into something.
14:49I've been seeing you getting cozy with the potter's wife.
14:52You ain't planning on anything with her, are you?
14:55Look, Mike, you let me decide what I'm going to do with her.
14:59I'm not going to let you decide what I'm going to do with her.
15:02I'm not going to let you decide what I'm going to do with her.
15:05Look, Mike, you let me decide what's best.
15:08Then you better do some faster sighting,
15:10because I ain't getting my scalp lifted for nobody.
15:13All right. All right.
15:16We'll do it tomorrow night.
15:18Be a lot safer all around.
15:20But it's got to be tomorrow night.
15:30We'd only been a few days on the trail,
15:32but it was long enough to overhang the party with the smell of trouble.
15:36From the way Taggart was watching the trail,
15:38I figured he was expecting trouble any time.
15:41And from watching Condon and Horton,
15:43I had a feeling something was brewing there also.
15:46I didn't like their little secret powwows.
15:50I got to worrying that if it all exploded at once,
15:54nobody would ever get to see Gold Creek.
16:32What is it, Taggart?
16:36We aren't getting Indians this quick, are we?
16:38No, I don't reckon so.
16:41I just caught a twinkle of something back in the hills.
16:44What do you think it was?
16:46Sun hitting a bit of mica, most likely.
16:49Could also be the sun hitting on a rifle barrel, huh?
16:52Could be.
16:55I can't understand why it's so cold.
16:59It's getting cold.
17:01It's getting cold.
17:04I can't understand why it's so cold you were roasting all day well we've climbed about
17:27a couple of thousand feet since yesterday Ruby a higher altitude makes it colder oh
17:32shut up I don't need an explanation from you
17:44and that's another thing you better keep a closer watch on your investment a
17:50couple of more days and you won't know what direction he's going in
17:56hmm I think I'll go to sleep
18:10night
18:26how do we know tag it ain't putting on this Indian scare just to keep us in line
18:34as far as you know he's got nothing to worry about us and I thought I'm giving
18:38the hill some pretty sharp words where you don't know what was looking at and
18:41that's all the more reason for us to get it over with now before somebody moves
18:44down something that Potter's wife said makes it doubtful who's got the money
18:50what difference does it make who's got the money we get everything don't we
18:52could be in town you know who with a bartender what you've heard of a bank
18:58huh yeah well it's a chance we'll have to take that's all because I ain't going
19:05another step into no Indian country I just a chance of more money what about
19:11a repotter same as the rest what you don't think we're gonna take her along
19:15do you I don't see shooting a woman like well if it'll spoil your breakfast
19:20condom leave it to me because I got an idea that money-grabbing which is
19:24planning on coming out of this alone
19:28let's get it over with quick
19:50we saw your fire and thought you might be able to spare the little girl doesn't
20:08the United States Army feed its cavalryman anymore well we got
20:11separated from my outfit in an Indian ambusher there so and there's garrison
20:17it's about a hundred miles away how'd you get here so quick hello we were on
20:23a scouting mission yeah about two days out when it happened
20:26Oh Jagger we got some company seems like they want to bite a grub you two been
20:40trailing us during the day why no we just spotted your fire about half an
20:44hour ago why you have an engine trouble not that we know of what can you tell
20:50us you got ambushed by a strong party in Anvil Rock reckon curtain and me here's
20:54the only two that got away we've been running from a Memphis senator sure
20:58could use some grub well come on I'll poke up the fire
21:14yeah I don't like the looks of this they're two men that have been on the
21:18run for a few days they and their horses look pretty doggone good but but they're
21:25cavalrymen yes and no what do you mean their gears army regulation but part of
21:33what they're wearing has been picked up elsewhere well we better go tell Carl
21:39I don't go flying off the handle how do we know they ain't in together it seems
21:44to me condon and Horton accepted these two pretty easy how will we find out
21:49well tomorrow morning we'll tell condon and Horton that we're even on asking the
21:59cavalry men to stick with us to Gold Creek that'll smoke them out in the open
22:05how so well if they're in cahoots they'll agree if they ain't they won't want a
22:11sheer grub and go yeah yeah
22:36anything keeping you two from riding
22:41on going your way the wrong direction for Fort Apache we didn't know you know
22:49now we ain't exactly no hurry to get back to Fort Apache you're a court
22:55marshal for desert
23:01harsh words here's some more to go with him you ain't riding our way because we
23:06don't need you now let's get all our cards up on the
23:10table the drunken old fool you've got leading you talks a lot when he's drunk
23:15and asleep now we know what you're out after and we want in you ain't got a
23:19chance in hell after we overheard you two planning last night
23:25I think you'd better count us in I think
23:31boys now let's start riding nice and easy
23:46Horton may seem to think there might be something what them two were saying
23:50about the engines so we decided we'd do a bit of scouting around that's a good
23:55idea we'll catch up later
24:25here they come
24:37like a couple of prairie dogs just waiting to be picked off here's where
24:59General Horton passes sentence on a couple of deserters
25:37like give me a sign if you're still alive
26:07they've run out on us well I ain't putting a thing past them two we'll know
26:31what happened where the devil have you been
26:48who got him the arrow just came out of nowhere a patch
27:08what happened I don't know an arrow came out of nowhere I didn't see a thing
27:23before I didn't see a thing after that's the Apaches idea fair play then you
27:28don't know if there was one or a hundred there was only one else condon wouldn't
27:32be I knew we should have hung on to those two army men what chance if we got
27:37now stop your whining Potter still with us how do you know here they are
27:50seems like they're a tag in here talking in his sleep about the gold you're doing
27:56well making that up cotton cuz I got a notion you're in cahoots with him to
28:01save you fighting for the Indian you can't gun us down you need us now he's
28:17right Condon he's right we've got to take them on from here on in I call all
28:23the bets Potter so don't tell me what to do could be the party doesn't need you
28:26Condon you've been trying to run this show ever since we left maybe I'll let
28:30you find gold creep stop it we're ever going to reach that gold we're going to
28:35need all the guns and and wits we can muster any of you want to argue against
28:41that
29:00the side of you on mrs. Potter why the side that offers the most would you care
29:19to make a bed I might have to write it out or bring it in person try the
29:27first
29:53you cheap grip
29:57this money belongs to me he didn't earn it you know of a harder way to earn it
30:02Potter well it's not any good to him now anyway and what are you acting so
30:07righteous about you were coming here to get this money yourself
30:12what have you been up to nothing that concerns you what do you do taking this
30:29money back from Horton seems like your husband doesn't like people getting
30:33killed before they earn their pay
31:33I got hurt he don't want engines gonna tackle a party like this when I have
31:53your scalp lifted by a bunch of brave Tigers right if it's run we run you run
31:58anyway if anybody's getting ideas I'm going back they're going back around me
32:03I'm moving ahead as fast as I can
32:07I reckon we reached it checked all my bearings and listen I'm mistaken we've
32:34come to the goal let's get unpacked
32:54I think your friend tiger had a few too many to drink along the way what do you
32:59mean Ruby well I'll explain it to you have you found any gold yet no none
33:05exactly that's right what where is all this gold he was talking about and where
33:13is he out in the bush dead drunk
33:17I knew it
33:34cool gold
33:47hold it hold your fire let's move his body to the brush
34:01Ruby you stay here we'll go search the brush come on
35:02well did you find something nothing there must be somebody out there it
35:08doesn't make any sense don't be waiting around for an engine to make sense
35:12especially when he's out to kill you Oh who tries for 10 years to convince
35:18somebody there's gold up here when he finally makes it back he gets one minute
35:23to feel it between his fingers and he collects himself a tombstone I'm sorry
35:31it had to be him I could use a drink I'll join you
36:01Oh
36:31Oh
37:01Oh
37:32Oh
37:34Oh
37:52hey don't wake up why'd you wake me up for there ain't nothing about what do
38:01you make him well one thing for sure they have a no square dance will they
38:10attack I don't think so how can you be sure I ain't I'm just going on the
38:16superstition that they believe if they're killed at night they'll never
38:19find their way to the happy hunting ground it's a lot of consolation mr.
38:23Jones well take it or leave it I'm going back to sleep
38:53Oh
39:23Oh
39:53did you ever see anything like this we're rich Ruby rich we will be if you'll
40:02shut up and keep working look at this nugget Ruby look at the size of it I
40:12look good on your finger wouldn't it
40:23Oh
40:53she's dead let's get a body out of here no use in making targets of ourselves
41:23Oh
41:33don't you think we ought to put up some kind of marker what for because it's
41:40usually done I guess great seems kind of lonesome without a touch of somebody
41:44cared oh you do it then I'll go look for Jones girl huh are you planning on
41:52getting out tonight I'm planning on getting out as quick as I can how quick
41:57is that as quick as I can round up all the sacks of gold mr. Potter
42:22Oh
42:52Oh
43:05what are you doing there watching me I wasn't watching you I just came over to
43:13have a little talk will you talk well it looks like we're the only two left
43:21we've got all the gold in the gear so well you've got to admit we're a long
43:28way from out of here I think we're going to need each other to get out of here
43:32with our scouts well maybe so and and maybe not just getting here cost us two
43:40men in the face of a party of seven that's what we're coming in now we're
43:44going out I have a strong feeling those Indians aren't going to let anybody out
43:48of here that easy not with this go they're not what use have they got for
43:53this girl huh well it might be sort of a God or a spirit or an omen to them you're
44:00a superstitious fool Potter and a coward besides
44:07Condon you know we'll never make it out of here if we try to go it alone
44:11yeah now look Condon you promised me that I go out of here with you and I'll
44:17pay you a thousand make it 1,500 2,000 Condon you're not leaving me out here to
44:27die I'm getting out with my gold I'm getting out hold on now and relax easy
44:36putter get yourself down that travel light we're gonna travel fast but we're
44:44still gonna need some handy guns and for good either you know what I'm going
44:54to do when we hit town I don't me about this I'm going to buy that saloon yeah
