00:00President Trump, in terms of what we've been hearing on this tension between Pakistan and India,
00:05says it's a shame, says he hopes the two nations won't escalate further.
00:10I mean, it sounds from that sort of language like there's not much appetite
00:14for any kind of U.S. involvement at this stage.
00:17Does that sound reasonable?
00:20I think that sounds exactly right.
00:23First, again, thank you for having me.
00:25The president made these comments in sort of an offhanded way.
00:29There's no evidence of any active U.S. involvement, as there have been in prior administrations
00:35when tensions have flared between India and Pakistan.
00:39And the U.S. relationship with Pakistan has been very fraught.
00:42Trump has had a good relationship with Prime Minister Modi in India,
00:47but the U.S. ability to influence Pakistan was never much, and it probably doesn't exist at all.
00:53So the U.S. role, I think, is going to be pretty much as a cheerleader for peace,
00:57whether that peace happens or war happens.
00:59The U.S. will just say, let's go for peace, but won't be able to do anything useful.
