00:00Packed or crammed curricula, bloated class sizes, overworked teachers and students, and a low labor utilization have beset the country's high school students over the years.
00:10Time for a makeover to strengthen high school education, which the Senate began to take on in a committee hearing earlier today, which our Daniel Manalastas covered in this report.
00:21The Senate Committee on Basic Education tackled the status of strengthening the senior high school program of the Department of Education.
00:31Some senators inquired particularly on the current status of the senior high school program.
00:37DepEd admits there are some challenges like the congested curriculum, overworked students and teachers, and low labor utilization or participation.
00:46However, they point out some small wins.
00:49P-BEN reported that we have improved the hiring outlook with four out of five companies open to hiring senior high school graduates, an improvement from the three out of five in 2018.
01:00The Philippines Statistician reported an increased school participation where senior high school program boosted enrollment among 16 to 17-year-olds by 13 percent, with the highest gains in low-income groups.
01:12According to a survey presented by Sen. Sherwin Gacharyan, a lot are not satisfied with the senior high school program of the government.
01:21In the high school program, about 33 percent are satisfied, about 40 percent are dissatisfied.
01:29Something that we should take note because what we want is our parents and our constituents to be happy with the K-12 program.
01:37This is the nation's education program.
01:40DepEd said it is starting a pilot study this year to strengthen the senior high school program, wherein 727 pilot schools are expected to participate, while full rollout is expected to begin next year.
01:55By way of defining our pilot study, we are collaborating with the ITS so that we'll have a more concrete and more evidence-based evaluation on how we see the pilot implementation will be happening at least for this coming school year.
02:14DepEd said this move for the senior high school curriculum is in light of the directive of the president to fix the education sector.
02:23Daniel Manalastas from the National TV for a new and better Philippines.
