US accuses Russia of 'cynically obstructing' UN Security Council's sanctions on North Korea
The United States accuses Russia of "cynically obstructing" the UN Security Council's sanctions on North Korea in an effort to avoid accountability for its "own violations." In March 2024, Russia's veto of a Security Council resolution forced the end of the UN sanctions monitoring system against Pyongyang and its nuclear program. The sanctions decided in 2006 and reinforced several times since then are still in place, but the committee responsible for monitoring them no longer exists.

00:00The 9,912th meeting of the Security Council is called to order.
00:07Today's briefing shows the Council will continue to ensure member states are aware of sanctions violations and evasion activity that generate revenue for the DPRK's unlawful WMD and ballistic missile programs, despite Russia's veto.
00:27Since September 2023, the DPRK has transferred over 24,000 containers of munitions and munitions-related materiel and well over 100 ballistic missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine.
00:45It is clear from evidence presented today that Russia is cynically obstructing the Council on DPRK sanctions implementation in order to try to escape reproach for its own violations.
00:59Meanwhile, China insists that it fully implements the Council's resolutions, but we have just seen evidence of Chinese authorities looking the other way, as PRC companies import DPRK coal and iron ore in violation of this Council's resolutions.
01:19As Pyongyang's actions clearly and continuously defy the Council's decisions, the Council should consider strengthening existing sanctions, not weakening them.
01:32Current U.S. administration, which came into office this year, keeps predecessors' hostile polish toward DPRK, escalating a risky political and military provocations against us.
01:49To project the Council is to providecrutch a strong better harруз ška jogging the other, which is not a forget-APPAR card línea.
