00:00Hello everybody, good evening if you're watching this live good afternoon or good morning if you're watching it on tape you went to bed on Sunday night ahead of the bank holiday but welcome to the race notebook the final of three notebooks from the 2025 Miami Grand Prix and this paddock right in the sort of overhang of the hard rock stadium with the Miami Dolphins has been all up and down you know people have got their hard luck stories people have got their
00:29would have been stories but there's one team who got it right for the whole weekend oranges oranges oranges oranges you come to Florida you get oranges there are oranges on the license plates you know not lemons although this is Ramsey's lemonade bar so not here your lemons no lemons for McLaren this weekend it's all been about orange one two in the sprint race
00:59and then at one two with a 33 second and a 37 second you know with a ridiculous margin over the next team and you know no limit sorry to overdo I want to go more of the citrus analogies but you know what is it around here well I'll tell you what it is around here that despite a car not being particularly quick in a straight line they are incredible in the medium speed and in the slow speed corners and that McLaren we've had
01:29the sign of the sign of the sign of dominance that we have not really seen at any track so far maybe you could argue China but you know not the real margin but you know it was three in a row and it's three in a row for Oscar Piastri and incredible the way it is just 33 seconds George Russell finished behind Lando Norris and 30 seconds seven seconds behind Oscar Piastri
01:59the slowest McLaren beat the quickest next car by 33 seconds and that is amazing yes there's a difference between the two drivers yes this is a case of what might have been for Lando Norris he could have won this race he wasn't really a racing driver if he didn't want to do racing driver things in the first lap with Max Verstappen but he is a racing driver and he didn't win this race instead
02:20it was three in a row for Oscar Piastri an absolutely brilliant race for the team and yeah Oscar keeps it rolling just what he said he wanted to do he didn't win the sprint race that happened yesterday he said I'll get my luck tomorrow and indeed he did in fact we didn't have any bad luck because we didn't have
02:38the rain it seemed that there was maybe it was all the hot air that's coming from you know the paddock and us talking and everything coming in here seemed to burn off the cloud because there were thunderstorms like you wouldn't believe apparently in downtown Miami and then down towards the Florida Keys and the same up north to sort of Fort Lauderdale so the rain was all around but we didn't get any of it so let me tell you what happened in the race because yeah well rain threatened it didn't come but at the start
03:08it was really the key moment for Lando Norris Max Verstappen was on pole he had a little bit of a wobble Max locked up and Lando saw an opportunity Lando said Max forced me off and clearly isn't very happy about it but once the stewards had a look at it they said well look it is within the guidelines and you know it's clearly within the guidelines Max as we always said knows the guidelines the racing guidelines better than anyone else there's Fred Vasseur just walking back we'll have a quick
03:37word about Ferrari in a bit you know and Max knew that he could just gently walk Lando Norris to the right hand side Lando would have to go off get his tyres dirty and then drop positions and he really did he was down to P6 now clearly with Andrea Estella team boss saying with hindsight had Lando just lifted off blended out of the throttle let Max Verstappen go you know then he would have been right behind him would have done what Oscar Piastri did and just passed him fairly easily a few laps later
04:07and then won the race okay but Lando's saying very firmly what am I going to do not go for it how much of a mind reset would that have to be now bearing in mind that what all Stella also said was that we have made it clear to Oscar and Lando before the race he said this that our margin expected margin over Red Bull and Russell is such that we think we're going to have this one
04:37in the bag so whatever you do don't throw it all away on lap one turn one but Lando's a racing driver he has to go for it and if he didn't where was he going to go yeah listen you know the story but I thought it was interesting that Stella said with hindsight Lando could have won the race after the race and before the race he said we told them maybe you know they didn't say give Max the lead but bearing in mind how motivated Max would be
05:04after the Jetta after the Jetta what he saw as you know making amends for Jetta then I don't know you can't say you can have it you'll have you'll have your own view but that's pretty much what happened as it was Oscar went into P2 and then Oscar sorry Antonelli went into P2 Oscar was actually in P3 and he held that until lap 4 then he went into P2 by passing Antonelli
05:34got him eventually as Max complained about his brakes on lap 14 and got P1 Lando made I mean you know just as good racing with it but in very different ways with with Max Verstappen and got him eventually after having to give the place back at one point having gone off the track slightly so yeah spirited fighting but by the time of the lap 20 then Oscar was in an already
06:04and all right and uh and Lando had to then catch up with him nine seconds the lead Oscar had built and then they never looked back after that the rain didn't come they had to work for it clearly but uh you know the glitter ball helmet did you like the glitter ball helmet by the way the helmet painters Jens Munzer had to go through several iterations before the FIA signed off on it can you imagine the FIA it's like yes hello oh yes hello I paint Lando's helmets yes yes you again
06:32uh what what is it this week glitter ball what what with loads of sort of mirrors on it yes yes glitter ball oh for heaven's sake so uh they had to go through lots of iterations before the FIA said okay you can have your glitter ball helmet Lando Norris but uh I thought interesting what Lando was saying was that it's a
06:51excuse me it's a positive weekend he knows what he has to do in qualifying but it's a positive weekend in that he's getting closer to Oscar Piastri but all the time
07:01Oscar continues onwards uh three in a row and clearly still the championship favorite as we go
07:08to the European stage of the 2025 FIA Formula One world champion we'll come back to you so Lewis got it in the ears
07:16didn't he the old meme the old Ferrari meme we'll come back to you look and he really uh he really understood
07:23what that meant um Fred Vasseur defended the team well let me tell you what happened first of all Lewis Hamilton 8th Charles Leclerc 7th
07:29and uh a different Lewis was a hard tire starter moved up to p11 but then spent 20 laps behind
07:36Esteban Ocon and lost a lot of time then finally got by him and then um in when there was the the
07:42the virtual safety car and Lewis went onto the medium tire suddenly he was on the quicker tire and Charles
07:47Leclerc was already on the hard tire and that meant that Lewis being on a different strategy wanted past
07:52Charles Leclerc now okay easy if you're Lewis Hamilton to say that I'm quicker but that didn't
07:58happen for a while and um Lewis was saying a couple of bits of absolute radio gold was saying you know
08:04look I I need to get go past here tell me what's happened and you know have a tea break while you're
08:10at it and then when they eventually he didn't get past Kimi Antonelli uh the Ferrari guys said can you
08:15let Charles Leclerc passed and then they warned him about Carlos Sainz and Lewis with a little bit of a
08:20radio gold said do you want me to let Sainz passed as well now in the context of Hamilton flexing his
08:27muscles a little bit with um uh what do you think of the Ferrari strategy sir um in the uh in in the you
08:35know in the context of uh of Lewis flexing his muscles this weekend in terms of what's going on
08:41with Ferrari where the deficiencies of the car are do you know who he is influencer probably
08:47do we know who he is I mean he's cool don't get me wrong but you know he's a DJ from the formula one
08:57cool all right okay cool of course he's a DJ purple cowboy hat course he's a DJ um not the mouse though
09:04is he uh right so yeah listen understandable when Lewis is detailing maybe flexing his muscles
09:11detailing what's wrong with the car that then he feels like he's been at the team long enough
09:15and feels secure enough to then publicly question over the team radio uh you know the strategy and
09:21call into question why they take so long at doing it Fred Vasseur said we only took a lap to do it
09:27it was fine it was executed absolutely fine of course Fred sticking up for his team as he should
09:32he's a team boss I think what Lewis will will bear in mind is that part of the thing he job he has to
09:39do here at Ferrari is to help their strategy team as he's helping all the team as they're helping him
09:43sharpen up a little bit into the kind of outfit that he's used to in Mercedes there's not to say
09:47that he's one of turns Ferrari strategy over to Mercedes after all Ferrari strategy team got the switch
09:54onto the dry tires bang on in the sprint race and got Lewis a p3 didn't they so they're not all bad
09:59but it's that we'll get back to you that Lewis felt the pain of today and uh I'm sure there'll be
10:04more discussions going into the European season but it's some more points for him uh Charles
10:10Leclerc uh struggled a bit with the handling earlier on and vibrations lost pace to the
10:14Williamses and uh but in the end got back past uh uh Lewis Hamilton but couldn't get anywhere close
10:21to Kimi Antonelli or anyone ahead of him for that matter right Red Bull and um yeah as I say Max
10:29Verstappen out for Jeddah revenge and uh wasn't going to be passed by any McLarens uh on the first
10:34lap even though he had a little lockup good start but uh shepherded Lando off the track early on after
10:38a little bit uh around a little bit of a lockup it seemed from me watching hard but fair and the
10:45stewards agreed as well uh so that was fine Yuki was up one place to p9 it was not it was not
10:51investigated the Verstappen shepherding off um Max defended fantastically uh overbraked and lost the
10:59place to Oscar and then got passed by Lando as well these brakes useless he complained on the radio
11:05he raced Lando but then got done on lap 18 pitted lap 27 before the virtual safety car and when you've
11:11put before the virtual safety car and the likes of George Russell get a much cheaper stop under the
11:15virtual safety car then you're going to end up if you're Max Verstappen behind Russell which is
11:18exactly what happened and now George Russell is only six points behind Max Verstappen in the
11:24drivers championship think about that think about them oranges uh so yeah it looks like um the
11:30McLarens keep banging in the one two then it might end up the championship just between them and George
11:35and Max who look like the championship challengers earlier on in the season aren't going to get a look
11:40in being very close for them between them but a new floor for Max Verstappen Yuki Tsunoda gets the
11:46new floor in Imola and he really needs it because he was distant uh 10th today trailed home but what
11:55he did manage to do after carelessly picking up a um you might say carelessly picking up a uh speeding
12:01fine in the pits he did manage to offset that by finishing 5.1 seconds um behind in front of uh Isaac
12:10Hajar and getting himself the last point in this Grand Prix interesting when you get an Olympic legend
12:16just sitting behind a load of boxes isn't it 1500 meter legend just sitting alive behind a load of
12:23boxes that's Miami hello Lord Coe oh he's not looking oh he's on the phone all right that's Miami for you
12:31Pete a DJ in a purple cowboy hat and Seb Coe sitting behind a load of boxes on his phone
12:36right let's do Mercedes then we'll take a break and um George Russell said on the radio afterwards
12:42I've been a bit this weekend but I think I redeemed myself uh today and he did but helped by the virtual
12:50safety car and we're in bear in mind that you it takes 20 seconds to do a pit stop but only 10 seconds
12:56under the virtual safety car Mercedes who had a sticky front uh left wheel nuts go on they lost a few
13:04seconds on that but in the end it didn't matter they still got past Max Verstappen because of that
13:08um virtual safety car so uh that worked really well for George and that cemented his p3 and back on
13:15the podium so uh that's important for George uh it was quite a long stint on the medium tyre at the end
13:21of the race actually a good 26 27 laps uh on the medium at the end because of the timing of that virtual
13:28safety car but George made it work for him as for Kimi Antonelli great start for him took p2 as a
13:33said earlier earlier but really ragged the tires a bit got passed by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris
13:39quite quickly pitted on lap 26 but he was held for Carlos Sainz and lost a few seconds there uh in the
13:46pit stop so not clean pit stops for either Mercedes and uh held off the Ferraris and finished at 1.5
13:53seconds ahead of the leading Ferrari of Charles Leclerc did Kimi Antonelli so uh yeah that was um
14:00uh that was what happened and um you know they stay they stay do Mercedes uh a very decent and solid
14:08second in the Constructors Championship right you're looking at a car that's in some sort of movie
14:14but in the meantime we'll take a break when I after which I'll tell you what happened to Alpine today
14:20on the end of a very disappointing weekend and how Isaac Hadjar just missed a point by the smallest
14:26of margins
14:27hi welcome back to the notebook from the 2025 race of Miami Miami Grand Prix where pink is definitely the
14:42color I've gone with pink they've got the pink blush rosé is it blush or rosé on the uh the activation down
14:48here it's uh it's on there pick some pink hats which are around what does the pink hat say uh the pink
14:56hats are are they the the rosé hats yeah with with Haas oh with Haas the Haas they're pink Haas pink Haas
15:03hats fantastic and everything's pink apart from McLaren who are orange and not lemons I was doing
15:10some citrus stuff anyway right let's get on with it the green what's going on with the apples what's
15:14going on with the greens because Aston Martin don't have any apples and they're not doing any apples at
15:19the moment where's your apples Aston Martin because they seem to be getting slower um Lance Stroll had a
15:24throttle damper scare on the bridge grid but that was fixed good start for Lance up to p15 but then
15:28stopped uh stopped on lap 21 after get Gabriel Bortoleto and followed Fernando Alonso home 4.1
15:34seconds behind Fernando Alonso 15th spun and recovered he only lost one place actually when he spun and
15:40recovered because the others were so far back uh he was 18th and then finished from 17th dropped to 18th
15:45pitted on lap 29 under the virtual safety car saved a load of time there but trailed home uh 15th so
15:50that's how Alonso got past stroll but still come on Aston Martin come on Adrian Nui Adrian give us a day
15:58all right put a day into this car come on give us a day can't all be about 2026 give this car a day
16:05and you'll be able to make a difference right Alpine no points for them either um but uh Jack Doohan was
16:12very disappointed because um uh Jack only lasted half a lap got a incident with a with a Toro Rosso and
16:19then a puncture and then damaged racing bulls uh and out so really down you know down uh i've just seen him
16:27in the paddock actually being sort of consoled by his dad you know his place is delicate enough
16:33within the team even though Frank Colapinto the threat of him seems to be gone but you never know
16:37so you know he needed to try and score a point this weekend and hasn't but for that matter neither
16:42is Pierre Gasly Gasly from the pit lane because he changed his suspension back to much more like
16:46Doohan's uh setup so the one thing that Doohan's doing doing is doing good setup changes um to make the car
16:55optimize the car and Pierre Gasly felt that um the direction he'd taken was uh much worse than
17:01what Doohan was doing and so he did what Doohan was doing and he got his setup so uh that's something
17:06that uh uh Jack Doohan is doing correctly um but uh yeah not a great weekend for Alpine uh not great for
17:14Haas F1 although even though Esteban Ocon did run in the top 10 for a while uh he had he was down one in the
17:20two in 10th Oscar Ollie Berman had some great moves up to P16 but then lost his drive lost drive the
17:26engine seems rather smoky and that's a suspected power unit issue although he said that everything
17:31else is turned off uh as well uh Oscar uh Ocon defended from Hamilton but then he wasn't able
17:38higher he wasn't able to appear under the virtual safety car so Ocon got unlucky because he pitted before
17:42the virtual safety car of course he wasn't to know that there was going to be a virtual safety car
17:45and dropped down to P12 seven seconds behind Isaac Hadjar and here's the story about Isaac Hadjar now
17:53look they are in a colossal fight with Sauber with Alpine and with and with Haas in the Constructors
18:00Championships our racing balls they need every point going and if you think that they were letting
18:07Yuki Tsunoda get a point because it's the bigger sister team and they were somehow in the service Red Bull
18:13of racing balls of Red Bull racing nonsense they are desperately trying to get every point they can
18:20and for Isaac Hadjar over a 57 lap race to miss out by a tenth of a second to Yuki Tsunoda must be the most
18:31thing in the world because that's what it was Yuki had a five second penalty uh for uh speeding in the pit
18:38lane as i've said and Hadjar was five seconds behind him and as they crossed the line Hadjar was not
18:45able to close on him to within five seconds or not five or 4.9 ideally and instead it was 0.1 oh dear oh
18:53dear i mean it's okay weekend for Isaac but 11th and so frustrating he'll he'll be kicking himself i'm
19:00sure surely somewhere there was a tenth of a second over those last 30 laps when they knew that Yuki was
19:07going to get a penalty so frustrating frustrating also for Liam Lawson still no points in 2025 like
19:13Fernando Alonso still no points for him and because Liam had his points taken away from the sprint race
19:18slightly cruelly so still no points for Liam Lawson uh in uh this year he was hit by doing or rather doing
19:25him or whatever and spun around and rejoined last but uh ran gamely to see if he could carry on but
19:31pitted and had to retire with damage to the car Williams and they've salvaged something from the
19:38weekend after a nothing penalty for nothing under the safety car robbed them of p4 in the sprint race
19:44and five points they've got p5 and 10 points i think it is for uh Alex Alban today so that's really good
19:50Sainz p9 Alex Alban p5 Sainz and Alban ran sixth and seventh ahead of Charles Leclerc and raced each other
19:57early on James Val said that maybe that wasn't a good idea they lost race time by racing each other
20:02but he's gonna have to look at that Alex Alban had to stay in clean air because he had falling water
20:07pressure and the car was starting to overheat but as soon as it got into clean air then he was able
20:12to cool the car down but running behind his teammate wasn't a good idea so uh he got past or i don't know
20:17whether the team put him past but anyway um what that meant was that Sainz was vulnerable to the
20:22Ferraris Lewis Hamilton got past and then Sainz dropped to p9 uh because he missed out uh in the
20:31virtual safety car he was unlucky with a virtual safety car and uh there are various things with
20:35the stewards uh to do with the Williams drivers they seem to be very friends with the stewards that's
20:39what James Val said but um yeah the lost Miami sprint race five points might come back to haunt them
20:45but might not but they scored very well today with points with both cars so congratulations to
20:50Williams Alban fifth Sainz ninth and finally let's do Sauber Gabriel Bortoleto was a DNF a good start
20:57by Bortoleto uh he held p13 Hulkenberg was up to p14 uh Bortoleto was the first of the stoppers on lap 21
21:04failed off fended off an under overcut attempt by by Lance Stroll but uh he had a failing engine and
21:10caused the last virtual safety car Hulkenberg finished a lap down and 3.5 seconds behind Pierre Gasly uh did uh
21:20Nico Hulkenberg 14th and while we're talking about German racing drivers I've got to say valet and
21:26rest in peace uh Jochen Maas a uh a legend of of uh sort of you know well McLaren actually he was one of
21:35the only 22 drivers who won a race run a won a race for McLaren uh and he's died at the age of 79 uh his
21:42family have announced so um yeah uh thanks very much for the memories and a real fighting driver
21:49was Jochen Maas a big man and a brave man in a dangerous era of formula one uh if you don't know
21:54much about him go and have a look but uh yeah he uh he passed away uh this weekend right that is it
22:01for the notebook join us uh for the podcast the f1 show podcast which will be out on Wednesday and then
22:07uh the next Grand Prix is the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from Imola home race for Kimi Antonelli home race
22:16for Ferrari they'll be hoping uh for a better weekend than they had here but on the 16th 17th and 18th of
22:23May a sort of name culture background ancestors home race for Oscar Piastri Piastri Australia's finest but maybe
22:33Italian uh heritage somewhere back then but from Miami and the hard rock stadium we will say thanks
22:40for watching and goodbye see you in Imola in a couple of weeks time bye everyone
