00:00Hi, I'm Nicole Hanrahan. I'm in third grade and from New York, New York.
00:09You will meet Nicole and these other children today as we play the game of Kids in Definition, Child's Play.
00:20And here's the star of Child's Play, Bill Collins!
00:30Thank you. What a moment. Thank you.
00:40Hi there. Thank you very much and welcome to Child's Play, a game in which children define words that grown-ups try to guess.
00:47Now, the children we just met are going to be back later on in our show to try to help the winner of today's game go for the big money.
00:53Right now, let's meet, well, speaking of big money, we have our champion back with us.
00:58This is her fifth consecutive day and because of our rules, it will be the final day she is on our show, but she's going to keep trying.
01:05So far, she has $8,500. Ladies and gentlemen, Marcia Carter.
01:16It is a pleasure for me, Marcia, to associate with the upper class.
01:21Now, let's see, you've been with us five days.
01:24Yeah.
01:24Are you still single?
01:25Yes, I am.
01:26And $8,500 of your own?
01:28Yes.
01:29Fellas, the line forms at the exit right after the show.
01:32I'm sure Marcia will be happy to meet and talk with all of you.
01:35Good luck, Marcia.
01:36Equal good luck to your challenger.
01:38Let us make her welcome.
01:39She is here for her first day.
01:40Ladies and gentlemen, Janet Mitchell.
01:44Hi, Janet.
01:47What would you like us to know about you, Janet?
01:52Well, I'm an administrative assistant.
01:53I work in Keston for a small engineering firm.
01:56And I just got married seven months ago to my husband, Matthew, who is today moving us from Long Beach to Seal Beach all by himself.
02:05He's doing the moving, and you're here playing child's play.
02:07Well, that's the way to start him out, Janet.
02:10Keep him in line.
02:11That's right.
02:11If you're all ready, we are all ready.
02:13We are going to begin the guessing, as we usually do, and that's with our champions.
02:16So, Marcia, you get ready to answer, and we'll show the audience the word we're going to be playing for.
02:21Audience knows what the word is at home and in the studio.
02:24Our players never do, until, of course, they get a few clues.
02:27For instance, here describing the first word is Pamela Dilworth, who is six years old.
02:32Pamela, if you would.
02:34Well, it's kind of Christian, and they say it because you could lose your spirit if you don't.
02:44And also, if you don't do these things to God, it's not bad, but it's good.
02:53And if you don't do it to God, then you could become a saint.
02:58I mean, if you don't do it to God, then you couldn't become a saint or anything good.
03:02But if you don't like I try to always remember the ground, I will become a saint.
03:09There you go, Pamela.
03:17I remember that St. Loss of Temper.
03:20We used to have him in our group.
03:22What do you think, Marcia, based on what you just heard, what word do you think we're looking for?
03:25It sounds like something I always try to do, and it's pray.
03:28Pray is the right answer.
03:30Boy, good job.
03:34I guess if we can really take those clues literally, you have $8,500 and you're out to be a saint.
03:42You have a point, and we play child's plan until time is up, and whoever's ahead at that point wins $500 and a chance at $5,000.
03:49We'll be back in just a moment.
03:54Okay.
03:56One-nothing, Marcia's up there.
03:58Janet, your turn.
04:00It's going to begin with you.
04:01Boy, I think you'll enjoy this next season.
04:02First of all, let's show the folks at home the word.
04:04There it is.
04:05Remember, everybody, that's the word we're looking for.
04:08And here to describe this word is a young man who's five years old.
04:12His name is John Bell.
04:14John, any time you're ready.
04:16When you do this from one of your jobs or something, or when you're sort of, like, quitting,
04:23and then you say this word, like, after 20 years, I'll do this word.
04:30Now my grandfather, I'm glad he didn't do this word.
04:33He went to Dallas almost every morning and asked to go up to the first aid squad and, um, clean out the toilet.
04:54Thank you so much for her, Janet.
04:56What do you think we're looking for here?
04:58Well, after 20 years, I hope I can retire.
05:00Retire!
05:01By golly!
05:01I'm going to talk to John about his grandfather.
05:10The score is one apiece now, all tied up.
05:12Marsha's going to begin with you, and here's the word we'll be playing for.
05:16Okay, that's the one we're looking for.
05:18And we have a young man who's six years old here.
05:21Yeah, this is a young man.
05:23Devin Rattray is his name.
05:24Devin, if you would, please, sir.
05:26Like, when you're telling us, like, a jokely fib, then, um, then you, like, then you, like, um, then you, like, do what I'm talking about to them.
05:40And then, and then the other person that knows that it's a fakely lie knows that they're telling the person, like a trick, sort of.
05:50And then the other person that knows about it knows that, um, that they're playing the trick on them now.
05:57Thank you, Devin.
05:58Very good.
06:07Devin almost went out of this.
06:08I think it's catching.
06:09Based, Marsha, on what you heard there, what word do you think we're looking for?
06:13A jokely lie sounds like a fib.
06:16Fib is a good guess for what you heard, but it's not what we're looking for now.
06:19You remember, please, Janet, what you heard.
06:20And listen to, oh, here's a friend of our seven-year-old, Amy Fitzpatrick, as she talks about the same word.
06:26Amy, dear.
06:27My dad taught me, but my mom still doesn't know how to do it very well.
06:33Uh-oh.
06:35And it's fun to do.
06:37Like, if you're going to do, like, a trick on somebody, and you want them to remember, you, um, you take your eye and close it, and then open it again,
06:48and then they'll know that they'll remember what the trick is.
06:51Thank you, Amy.
06:54Well, now.
06:59Did you listen carefully to everything Amy said, Janet?
07:03Well, if you're trying to fib or fakely lie, you might be trying to deceive.
07:08No.
07:09You missed a very important part of that clue, but I'm not able to say what it is.
07:13Marsha, we're back to you.
07:14Last clue is yours, Juliana Stefanoff, seven and a half years old.
07:19Wrap it up, Juliana.
07:20Well, sometimes people do this to other people because they like them, they want to make guise at them.
07:32And they like them like all lady movie stars go, like, this to other guys.
07:41And that's it.
07:43Thank you, Julie.
07:46You didn't want to step on up.
07:48Where now?
07:50I would think Marsha you'd have it locked in by now.
07:53What do you think?
07:53It sounds pretty difficult, but I think this is a wink.
07:56It is a wink.
07:57Right.
07:59Good.
07:59Actually, Amy's big clue is that when you close one of your eyes and then open it again.
08:07So, Janet, you have a chance now to catch up.
08:10We're going to begin this one with you.
08:11And here's the word that we will have our children describe.
08:14For instance, here is Carrie Bauchner, who is seven years old.
08:17Carrie is a lovely young lady from Brooklyn.
08:20Carrie, please.
08:20Sometimes good things happen, and some bad things happen.
08:25You know, but you have to take everything that comes.
08:27You have to have a lot of problems in it.
08:29And there's a lot of pressure.
08:31And sometimes it's really easy to go through this.
08:34Thank you, Carrie, for that bit of philosophy.
08:40What do you think?
08:41Well, if you're under pressure and you have to go through it, is it life?
08:44It is.
08:45That's it.
08:46There you go.
08:49That was a nice philosophy that youngster had there.
08:53We have a tie score, two points apiece.
08:55Marsha, we start with you this time.
08:57And here's the word for the people at home.
08:59Okay.
09:00Okay.
09:01All right.
09:02That's the word we're going to be describing now.
09:05And we decided to have one of our regulars.
09:08It's Cassie Feldman, who is seven years old.
09:10So, Cassie, talk about this word in your own way.
09:13Please.
09:13It's someone that's stupid, like, and, like, if, let's say, there's a boy and a girl on
09:22call.
09:23And they order something to eat.
09:26And the girl, she orders a hot dog.
09:29And then the boy, he was helping her by squirting the mustard on the hot dog.
09:35But by accident, then, um, he, he, he, he was looking at a girl with nice legs and he squirted
09:42it in his face.
09:43In her face.
09:44And he got really mad and she said, and she said, you.
09:49And then he just got out of the car and he, and he went and talked to the other girl with
09:54the nice legs.
09:55Cassie's, Cassie's descriptions are becoming more stories and they always have happy endings.
10:08Based on what you heard, Marsha, what do you think we're looking for?
10:11That guy sounds like a real jerk.
10:12Jerk is right.
10:15Wow.
10:15Where are they coming from?
10:19You two are playing one sensational game.
10:21It's three to two and we'll be back here with the fast play rhyme.
10:24But right now, we have this message.
10:25Right now, I gotta go squirt some mustard.
10:28Almost anybody.
10:30Okay, time for fast play.
10:32From now on, each child will define a different word.
10:35And as soon as you recognize the word, interrupt with your signal, waste no time.
10:39Each right answer will now be worth two points so it could go either way.
10:42When you hear the school bell, that means time is up.
10:45And whoever's ahead wins the game.
10:46$500 and a chance at $5,000.
10:49Both of you now ready to interrupt.
10:51Here's the first word and Cassie Feldman's back again with it.
10:54Cassie.
10:55Wow.
10:56Thanksgiving.
10:58Yes, Marsha.
11:00Holiday is the right answer.
11:01Two points for it.
11:03Wow.
11:03Good players.
11:05Next word, Alexander Glass.
11:07Alexander.
11:09Well, it's this little sort of capsule thing that you put.
11:13Yes, Janet.
11:14Pill?
11:14No, no.
11:16There's a little tiny bit left.
11:17Now listen closely, Marsha.
11:18Alexander.
11:20Gun.
11:21And it shoots it out.
11:24Pull it.
11:24Pull it is the right answer again.
11:27Marsha, you are really picking them out of the air.
11:29Seven, two.
11:31Alyssa Fox has it, Alyssa.
11:33It's a little bit like the encyclopedia.
11:36What do you think, Marsha?
11:38Dictionary.
11:38Wow.
11:39Two more.
11:39Mine, two.
11:40Here is David Michael Goldstein.
11:45David.
11:46There's one of these things that has a crack in it.
11:49What do you think, Janet?
11:50Bell.
11:50Bell is the right answer.
11:51You're coming on.

11:53Sasha.
11:54Sagan has the next one.
11:56Okay, Sasha.
11:57These three initials stand for a chemical, monosodium glutamate, but they use...
12:05Marsha.
12:06M.G.?
12:07Nope.
12:08There's a little bit left.
12:09Remember what you heard is wrong, and here's the rest of the description.
12:13Sasha.
12:13Drink Chinese food.
12:15Too much of it can give you a terrible headache.
12:17Now then, what do you think?
12:19Sugar?
12:20No.
12:21No.
12:21The three initials are M.S.G.
12:24M.S.G.
12:24Okay, nothing lost.
12:25Still nine to four.

13:02Listen carefully.
13:03Victoria, please.
13:05And it's supposed to...
13:06When you throw it, if you're very good at this, it'll probably return.
13:12Boomerang.
13:13Boomerang is the right answer.
13:14What a lovely accent Victoria had.
13:1711, eight.
13:18Mark, Colonel.

15:15We have a brand new champion.
15:17Congratulations, Janet Mitchell.
15:21Did you come rolling up the hill?
15:25Well done.
15:27Very well done.
15:28I must take a moment, if I may.
15:30Marsha Carter.
15:31Marsha Carter, you were with us for five days, this being your fifth.
15:35You leave us with our thanks.
15:36You're a marvelous player.
15:38You take $8,500.
15:40Thank you, Marsha.
15:42You got yourself $500 and a chance at $5,000 in our turnabout game, where the kids will
15:48be here to help you win the big money.
15:49See you in a moment.
15:50Right back.
15:50Thank you, Gene.
15:55We're back to Janet Mitchell, who just beat a very fine champion in Marsha.
15:59She now has $500, and now you're going to get a chance to play our new $5,000 game of
16:04turnabout.
16:05We call it turnabout, because now the grown-ups have to define the words for the children
16:09to understand.
16:10And if you're ready, we are ready.
16:12Let's say hello to our children right now.
16:14Hi there, Gene.
16:15Hi.
16:16Hi.
16:16Look at this nice fuck here.
16:19Hello, and welcome all.
16:24We're all getting to be old friends here.
16:26They're your helpers, and you will find they do a marvelous job.
16:29You have to describe to them.
16:30First of all, let's have everybody meet us.
16:32Molly, suppose you introduce yourself.
16:33Hi, my name is Molly Treberville.
16:36I'm in the third grade, and from South Carolina.
16:38And how about Michael here?
16:40Hi, I'm Michael Aaron-Pelisky.
16:42I'm in the third grade, and I live in Tarzana, California.
16:47Thank you, Michael.
16:48And Nicole?
16:48Hi, I'm Nicole Hanrahan.

16:59And finally, Jennifer.
17:01Hi, I'm Jennifer Dateliston.
17:03I'm in the third grade, and I'm from Van Nuys, California.
17:06We are happy to have you all with us.
17:09Nice fun.
17:11Well, now, I'm sure you'll agree with me, Janet.
17:15You have a fine bunch of assistants here.
17:17They're going to work to help you.
17:19And we're going to show you seven words one at a time.
17:21You have to define them so that the children will say the word you're defining.
17:25If you get stuck, you can pass, and then we'll come back to that word if there's time.
17:28We pay you $100 a word, get all seven, and you win the $5,000.
17:32The children will divide $100 for each correct answer, and if they get all seven words, they
17:37split $1,000.
17:38Have a total of 45 seconds on the clock.
17:41You're going to begin the guessing with Molly.
17:43Now, stand right here and look right at the person you're describing to.
17:46As soon as you see the word, you can start.
17:47Let's go.
17:47This is when you go to church and you say, the last thing you say when you're praying.
17:52Hey, man.
17:53Yes.
17:53Next word, Michael.
17:54When you play baseball, you swing with a?
17:56Back.

17:56Next word, Nicole.
17:57This is, bunnies do it.
17:59They?
17:59Hop.
18:00Yes.
18:00Next word, Trevor.
18:00Yes.
18:01Oh, you take a little kitty cat and you, with him.
18:04Hug him.
18:05No, you, uh.
18:05Love.
18:06Pat.
18:06Love.
18:07Pat.
18:08Next word, Jennifer.
18:09Farmers use this to do this to the field.
18:11Right.
18:11And they make it all nice, and they take it, and it's a big thing, and horses pull it sometimes.
18:16Yeah.
18:17Next word, Molly.
18:18Oh, little babies wear this to keep food off their stomachs and things.
18:20Oh, Bill.
18:21Yes.
18:21Next word, Michael.
18:22Oh, this is when you have good something and four-leaf clovers give it to you.
18:25Luck.
18:25Yes.
18:26Next word, Nicole.
18:26Oh, this is when you take your little kitty cat and you rub him in you, and you just make
18:30him.
18:30Love.
18:31So, pass.
18:32Come.
18:32Next word, Trevor.
18:33Yes.
18:33Okay.
18:35That's it.
18:36That was a tough word.
18:37That was a bet-trois, as it were.
18:39The word we were looking for, kids, there was cuddle.
18:41But cuddle's tough.
18:42You can think of it, but only after some.
18:44Huh?
18:44I began to say that.
18:45You started to say it, Nicole.
18:47You should have finished it up.
18:48The other one was plow.
18:50The nice thing is, you picked up another 500, so you have a total of 500 bucks, and the
18:55kids so far are working on 2,600.
18:58And we'll be back here to talk to you in just a moment.
19:00Tell you about it next time, but right now, I'll have a word for you.
19:02Mitchell is a nice lady.
19:04She's apologizing to the kids.
19:06You did a marvelous job.
19:07You got 1,000.
19:08They have 2,600.
19:09Go on over and talk to your friends.
