00:00This is Joel, who says he falls in love a lot, but he's never been married.
00:08We showed him videotapes of these three single women, and he picked one as his date.
00:12Which one did he choose? Which one would our audience choose?
00:15And this is Ron. He says he's looking for a woman who's the perfect 20.
00:20Which one of these women did he choose? Which one would our audience choose?
00:24Today on Love Connection, you will find out who they picked, who the audience picked,
00:28and everything that happened on their dates.
00:31Now, here to tell us more about Love Connection is our host, Chuck Woolery.
00:43Now, there are more than 60 million single adults in the United States,
00:47so here on Love Connection, we've got a new way for singles to meet.
00:50Here's how it works.
00:51We've compiled a videotape library of hundreds of attractive and available single people.
00:55We select some of those singles, and we show them three videotapes.
00:59Now, after they watch the tapes, they choose the one that they're most attracted to and go out on a date.
01:03And they come here, and they tell us what happened on the date.
01:05So, to begin with, let's meet a man who selected a date from our video library.
01:09He's from New York.
01:10He says he's a lovable, super nice guy.
01:12The teddy bear of a guy, as a matter of fact.
01:14Please welcome Joel Weiss.
01:15Joel Weiss.
01:16Well, most men are animals, and they're after sex.
01:28And I'm a romanticist, and I just want to have some fun and see what happens.
01:34Let it come.
01:34After fun.
01:35Yeah.
01:36Okay.
01:36Now, you're from New York.
01:37How do you like California girls?
01:39They're a little different.
01:39Well, when I first got here the first week, you know, I didn't know where I was going,
01:46so I went to Beverly Hills to meet a friend.
01:48And this guy went in the wrong building and the wrong elevator and everything,
01:53and this girl raped me in an elevator.
01:55So, you know, I didn't know what was happening.
01:57It really, really true.
01:58Just a typical day in Hollywood, folks.
02:01We're going to show you a portion of the tapes that Joel saw.
02:05So watch very closely, because we're going to ask you to vote again, okay?
02:08First, there was Barbara.
02:09Now, Barbara's from Cleveland.
02:10She likes clean-cut men who wear glasses.
02:12And here's what she says about her own looks.
02:14I hate being as big as I am.
02:16I would love to be 110 pounds like Cheryl Teagues.
02:20But it's not going to be, so I just try and stay in shape,
02:23and I try and stay at a certain level, you know, like a five-pound leeway,
02:28so that I'm never too big, never too, you know,
02:30if I could ever get down a little bit, I'll be real happy.
02:32But as long as I don't go over, I'm okay.
02:36Next, there was Elaine.
02:37Now, she's from Chicago.
02:38She enjoys people watching, and she thinks most men are strange.
02:41Here's why.
02:43Well, they don't know how to handle their feelings, you know.
02:47They kind of, I like how guys change it around when they do something wrong,
02:52and they dump it on you like it's your fault.
02:54That's what I don't like about them.
02:56That's what's strange.
02:56I haven't figured them out yet.
02:57But I am constantly trying.
03:00Finally, you watch Lisa.
03:01Now, she likes to sew and cook, and she plays the oboe.
03:04Here's the first thing she looks for in there.
03:07Oh, gosh, a great smile.
03:10That's the first thing I notice is a great smile with a good, healthy look is a real turn-on.
03:16Also a man that asks me a lot of questions.
03:18I like someone who's real interested.
03:20Okay, before we find out who Joel chose as his date, let's take a look at these ladies again, okay?
03:25First, there was Barbara.
03:26She's 29, and she's a hospital administrator.
03:29Then Elaine, she's 26 years old, and she's a bookkeeper.
03:32And finally, Lisa, she's a speech pathologist, and she's 29.
03:36Okay, audience, time to vote again.
03:38Who do you think is right for Joel?
03:40Here in the studio and at home, too.
03:42Please make your choice right now, okay?
03:44We're going to take a break, and when we return, we're going to find out who you selected
03:47and everything that happened on their date.
03:52We're going to find out who the audience picked a little bit later on,
03:54but let's find out who Joel selected.
03:55Joel, who'd you pick?
03:56I picked Lisa.
03:58Did you?
03:58Yeah.
03:59Okay, now, on Love Connections, we always hear both sides of the story.
04:02Lisa's backstage.
04:03So let's welcome Lisa Kalischer.
04:06Hiya, Lisa.
04:07Lisa, I'll be back to talk to you in just a moment.
04:09Hold on just a second.
04:10Why did you choose Lisa?
04:11Well, she was independent.
04:14Um, she was smart.
04:16She was funny.
04:17I liked this smile.
04:19And, uh, I just had a feeling about her.
04:21Lisa, what was your first impression of Joel?
04:24Well, my first impression of Joel was that he had a great smile and really sparkly eyes.
04:29I thought he was a nice-looking man.
04:30Good.
04:31All right.
04:31Well, you guys are off to a good start.
04:33What happened on the date, Joel?
04:34Well, we went to the Renaissance Fair.
04:36Did you go in costume when you went?
04:37Um, no, no.
04:38As a matter of fact, I'm wearing the same thing I wore on the date.
04:41Oh, good.
04:41And I haven't cleaned it since.
04:43It looks nice.
04:43Oh.
04:45So you went to the Renaissance Fair.
04:46What happened?
04:46Well, uh, we talked.
04:48I, uh, tried to make a move on him, but, uh, it didn't work.
04:51You did?
04:51Yeah.
04:52Well.
04:52What did you do?
04:53Just put my arm around and try to kiss him and everything.
04:55No, no.
04:56What did you do, Lisa?
04:57Just try to put his arm around and kiss you.
04:58Well, I was very flattered.
05:00I was, I felt I was responsive to a, to a point.
05:04Yeah.
05:04Did you kiss him?
05:04This was our first date.
05:05Did you kiss him?
05:06Yeah.
05:06Oh, of course.
05:07I kissed him.
05:08He's a great kisser.
05:09Oh.
05:09Oh.
05:09Oh, I like that.
05:12You are, too.
05:13And then we went to Malibu, but we never got there because the traffic and everything.
05:17And then we went to Yamashiro's.
05:19It was great.
05:20That was lovely.
05:20It was great.
05:21Good dinner.
05:22Excellent dinner.
05:23The best dinner there.
05:24Then what happened?
05:25Then we opened a $53 bottle of champagne.
05:27Where'd that come from?
05:29Jerry, uh, a party.
05:31A party?
05:32A Jerry Buss's party.
05:33Did Jerry Buss give this to you on occasion?
05:35No, no, no.
05:35I've been arrested now.
05:36Well, I worked as a waiter there and I, uh, stuck in my jacket.
05:40Oh, George!
05:43It was a wonderful moment.
05:45I'm finished as a waiter.
05:46Uh, I've finished with a lot of things.
05:50Um.
05:53I'm afraid to ask what happened next, Joel.
05:56No, we went to Haagen-Dazs, had ice cream, and we talked about life and, uh, went back
06:01to my apartment.
06:02We had a good time.
06:02We just talked and we really had a good time.
06:05I tried to make a move on her again, but I learned a lot about her.
06:08Very positive.
06:08You learned that you don't make a move on her the first time.
06:10No, well, you know, I'm a romanticist.
06:12I just, uh, I don't push it.
06:13It happens.
06:14It just happens.
06:15And I really had a good time.
06:16How did it end?
06:17Uh, sweetly.
06:19I kissed her.
06:20I wanted to see her again.
06:22And, um, it was Memorial Day, so, um, when I left her...
06:27No, no.
06:27I left him.
06:28That's right.
06:29She left me.
06:29She had the car.
06:30She's in the car, right.
06:31Uh, we have a pool.
06:32And I've been wanting to swim all day.
06:34Yeah.
06:34So, the clothes I'm wearing, I just dived into the pool.
06:37You didn't!
06:38I did.
06:38Oh, my God.
06:39You missed that part.
06:40Yeah, I missed that part.
06:40You got more in store for you, Lisa.
06:42It sounds like you guys had a great day.
06:44We had a great day.
06:45Yeah, I hope the audience picked Lisa.
06:46Let's see if they did, okay?
06:47Let's take a look and see what they picked.
06:48Oh, $60.
06:53All right, hey.
06:54All right.
06:56Do you want to take Lisa out again?
06:57Definitely.
06:58We'll pick up the task.
06:59Definitely.
06:59Lisa, you want to go out again?
07:01I'd love to.
07:02You want to come out and join us on stage?
07:03Sure, I'd love to.
07:04Come on, honey.
07:09I haven't seen each other for a while.
07:12Well, it sounds like you two had a great time.
07:14Come right around on this side, honey.
07:15It sounds like you two had a great time.
07:16Yeah, we really did.
07:17Excellent time.
07:18That's great.
07:19Thanks for coming on the show and sharing with us.
07:21We have a nice gift for both of you,
07:23and I hope that you'll come back and see us again.
07:25I'd love to.
07:26Definitely.
07:27We're going to come right back in just a minute.
07:28You hang in there.
07:28All right, we're back, and this time,
07:37let's meet a man who chose a date from our videotape library.
07:40He was raised in Philadelphia, likes tennis and cooking,
07:43and says he's a man's man.
07:45Please welcome Ron Young.
07:46Ron, I hear the expression all the time, man's man.
07:58What is a man?
07:59What's your definition of a man's man, anyway?
08:01Well, I think he's a rogue's rogue.
08:04He's the kind of guy that's been out there, experienced, diversified.
08:09A Robert Mitchum.
08:10Are you a ladies' man as well?
08:12Love him.
08:13You say you're looking for a perfect 20.
08:16Is that right?
08:17Yeah.
08:17What does that mean?
08:19A perfect 20.
08:20That's a one with about 20 million.
08:22No.
08:22A perfect 20 is, I would think, a sophisticated, gentle, self-efficient, bright lady.
08:34Good sensitivities, good qualities.
08:36How do you regard yourself?
08:37Are you shopping up, or are you shopping down?
08:39Do you feel like you're a perfect 20, and you're looking for somebody to match you,
08:42or are you looking for somebody that's much better than you are?
08:44Probably just as equal.
08:48Okay.
08:49That's fair enough.
08:49Listen, he's a man with a high self-esteem.
08:52I say.
08:53Based on Ron's prefaces, now he was shown videotapes and questionnaires of three women.
08:57Now, we're going to show you a portion of the tapes that he saw, and you and our audience,
09:00and you and our home audience as well.
09:01Watch very closely, because we're going to ask you to pick a woman that you think is best for Ron.
09:06Remember, he's looking for a 20.
09:07At first, there was Terry.
09:08He says she likes to snuggle and go places she's never been before,
09:11and sometimes she's afraid to tell people what she does for a living.
09:14I was working full-time as the advertising coordinator for Hustler magazine,
09:19and not thinking that, you know, people would ask me what I do,
09:22and I'd say I work for Hustler and I'm a masseuse.
09:25And initially, their reaction was, oh, really?
09:29So I stopped doing that in the same breath for a while.
09:33Next, there was Bonnie.
09:34Now, she's from Chicago.
09:35She thinks she's too caught up in her career, and here's what she has to say.
09:39In my experience, people that are caught up and obsessed with how much things cost,
09:45are lacking a lot as human beings.
09:48They're stingy in other areas.
09:49They're probably stingy emotionally.
09:50They're probably basically very selfish people,
09:53and I don't think I'd want anything to do with them.
09:56Finally, Ron, you watched Carol.
09:58Now, she's a weightlifter.
09:59She says that most men are afraid of women,
10:01and here's what she said happened on a recent date.
10:03I met this gentleman, and we sort of hit it off in conversation,
10:09and I gave him my telephone number, called me up,
10:11went out on a date to a restaurant, and up shows his wife.
10:15He didn't tell me he was married.
10:17I was crazy seeing, and I, oh, I hate to be embarrassed.
10:20I detest embarrassment.
10:22And so I kind of, like, slid under the table and groped my way out.
10:26Now, Ron selected one of these women for his date.
10:30Before he tells us who he chose, we're going to see all three women again.
10:33First, there was Terry.
10:35Now, she's a 29-year-old masseuse.
10:37Then Bonnie, she's a journalist, and she's 36.
10:40Finally, Carol.
10:41Now, she's an auditor, and she's also 36.
10:44Okay, audience, it's time to vote.
10:45Now, who do you think is the best lady for Ron?
10:47Here in the studio, and you at home, too.
10:49Please make your choices now.
10:50In a little while, we'll find out who the audience chose,
10:52but right now, let's find out who Ron selected.
10:54Okay, Ron, who did you select?
10:56I selected Bonnie.
10:57Bonnie.
10:58Okay, now, on Love Connections, we get both sides of the story.
11:00We ask our couples not to speak to each other after their date,
11:03and we keep them apart so that they'll be less inhibited about telling their story.
11:06Now, Bonnie's backstage, and we're going to say hello to Bonnie Robertson.
11:09Robinson, hello.
11:10Hi, Bonnie.
11:11Hi.
11:12What was your first impression of Ron?
11:14Fat and 40.
11:15Oh, this is...
11:23Yeah, I can see where I'm going to be now.
11:24I'm in deep trouble.
11:26This may start off slow and taper.
11:28Okay, Ron.
11:30I must have asked...
11:31Tell me what happened on the date.
11:34The date.
11:36It's like the...
11:37The date was like the past.
11:38Boring.
11:40What did you do?
11:41What did you do?
11:41We went over to a little place called Raphael's in Santa Monica.
11:46Italian restaurant.
11:48Had a nice dinner.
11:50She's a nice lady.
11:52Blind dates are real tough.
11:54Really?
11:55Really tough.
11:56Anything to add to that, Bonnie?
11:57It was a very nice restaurant that his family coincidentally owns.
12:02Oh.
12:03So we had an interesting...
12:05We had a dinner...
12:05We had a dinner a trois.
12:07Instead of a menage a trois, we had dinner.
12:10His nephew, Ron, and myself.
12:12And the two of them discussed their horse.
12:15Somebody owns a horse.
12:16I think his nephew or someone.
12:18And, you know, I sat there and went,
12:19No, this is great.
12:20This is terrific.
12:22How come you didn't spend more time talking to her?
12:24Was there...
12:24Oh.
12:28I didn't spend more time talking to her
12:29because she impressed me as the kind of woman
12:32that was a buy-me-give-me-take-me-bring-me-surprise-me
12:36kind of lady.
12:38Do you see yourself like this?
12:42Well, I'll tell you something.
12:43I love all the fine things in life.
12:45And I've had a really nice life.
12:46And mostly because I've worked hard.
12:48And I'm the kind of lady people like to do things for
12:51because I'm a very giving person.
12:52Tell me what happened.
12:53What happened after dinner?
12:54I mean, obviously, you didn't have a wonderful dinner.
12:57It was not...
12:58Well, listen...
12:58Not a memorable dinner, anyway.
13:00It was not a memorable dinner.
13:01Yeah, we just relaxed and called it a real early night.
13:04Oh, Ron, come on, Ron.
13:06You've got to tell the truth.
13:08What happened after dinner?
13:08No, Ron invited me back to his Marina Del Rey singles pad.
13:13After impressing me with...
13:15He had lived on the main line in Philadelphia.
13:17And he thought, as most guys out here who live down in the marina think,
13:21this is it, is a nice, charming, cozy little apartment
13:26that typically newly divorced men take on after they moved out of the house.
13:31So you went to this apartment?
13:34Yeah.
13:34After this dinner and all this abuse?
13:36Chuck, I've got to tell you something.
13:38It's the first time in my life anybody told me that I needed a manicure,
13:41that my socks were wrong.
13:42Oh.
13:45Well, now you got to his apartment.
13:47It's a little place down in Marina Del Rey.
13:48What did you do?
13:49We had a drink, and we listened to Ron tell me about his ideal woman
13:54and that I was an okay kid
13:56and that I deserved to find someone really terrific.
14:00And what time did you go home?
14:03Well, Ron gentlemanly walked me into my car
14:06and gave me a little pat goodnight,
14:08and it was probably about 11.30.
14:10On the shoulder? Did he kiss you?
14:11I think he kissed me on the cheek.
14:13Okay.
14:15Oh, sweet.
14:16And that was about 11 o'clock?
14:1811.30.
14:20That's how it ended, huh?
14:21It was fine.
14:22That was it.
14:23What time did it really end?
14:25Six o'clock.
14:26The first phone call.
14:27The first phone call.
14:29What ended?
14:29Let's find out who the audience picked.
14:32Let's see.
14:33That's kind of what we're getting.
14:35And that's the same person.
14:41Carol.
14:41Ron, the audience picked Carol.
14:45Would you like to go out with her?
14:46No, thank you.
14:47No?
14:47We're going to pay the bill.
14:49You're going to pick your own, huh?
14:50Yeah, I'll pick my own.
14:51Listen, Bonnie, honey, thank you very much for being on the show.
14:54You're welcome.
14:54We have a nice gift for you.
14:56You just stay right there.
14:57We don't have to go anywhere, okay?
14:58We're going to take a break, and when we return, the audience is going to select a date for
15:02our next guest.
15:03We'll be right back right at the end.
15:08Our next guest was shown videotapes of three men, and rather than choose her own date,
15:13she has agreed to let our audience decide who she would go out with.
15:16So let's meet her right now.
15:17She likes to dance, likes to play tennis.
15:20She says she's never had a bad date.
15:22Please welcome Dawn Summitt.
15:24Hi, Dawn.
15:28Hi, too.
15:29Hi, honey.
15:30Hi, how are you?
15:31Good to see you.
15:31What pretty eyes you have.
15:33So do you.
15:33Oh, well, thank you very much.
15:35You aren't nervous, are you?
15:35Oh, no.
15:36You seem to be shaking a little bit.
15:37Now, just relax.
15:38It's going to be easy.
15:39Believe me.
15:39How is it possible that you've never had a bad date?
15:43I refuse to have one.
15:45Well, why?
15:46I mean, what if...
15:47It's attitude.
15:47Everything's attitude.
15:48I just decide I'm going to have fun, and I have fun.
15:51And so no matter if the guy's rude and all that kind of stuff, you just have a good time
15:55in spite of him.
15:56I'd probably hit him or something.
15:59I don't think you have a good time to even be hitting him.
16:01I got you.
16:02Okay.
16:03You think you're ready for marriage again?
16:05No.
16:05See, that's when I get turned off, when I get with someone a long time.
16:08So I just stay with him for a short time, and I like him.
16:12How long do you sit here?
16:14How long do you...
16:15Dawn, we've got to play this straight, Dawn.
16:19Boy, have you got a wrong number.
16:20Oh.
16:23How long do you keep these people?
16:26I don't know how to say this.
16:28How long do you stay with these people?
16:30Three or four years.
16:32Well, that's a pretty long time.
16:35We're going to show you some of the portions of the videotapes that Dawn saw.
16:38Now, remember, she's agreed to let the audience right here decide who she should go out with.
16:42Okay?
16:42So watch very carefully.
16:44First, there was Fernando.
16:46Now, he enjoys all sports.
16:47He loves a challenge, and that's what it would take for him to get married.
16:51Be somebody that just sweeps me off my feet.
16:54Somebody that's going to give me a spark.
16:55I figure, hey, that's when Fernando's going to melt and go after somebody.
17:00In the meantime, I guess Fernando just stays single until the right person comes into his life.
17:03No, she doesn't have to be beautiful and, you know, so educated and all these good things.
17:11It's just got to be somebody who I really hit it off with, who I feel like, you know, sharing my life with.
17:17Somebody I can take care of.
17:19Okay, next there was David.
17:20Now, he's looking for a woman to share sunsets with, and here's what he'd do if the audience chooses him.
17:27Try to combine several things like sightseeing, dancing, going maybe to a concert or something, and eating dinner all at the same time.
17:35So I try to do as much as I can, especially when someone else is picking up the tab, looking to meet somebody.
17:39I'm not going anywhere on a regular basis right now, and to get the date paid for, and this way I get a chance, which is all right with me, to pick up the tab, you know, spend more than I would normally spend on the first date.
17:49Finally, there's John now.
17:50He says he likes to be spontaneous and tells us the time when he switched dates with his best friend.
17:56A friend of mine told me he had this beautiful girl to fix me up with for the wedding reception, and we ended up doubling on the date, and I went and picked her up, and I met her mother, and her mother weighed about 300 pounds,
18:08and I kind of knew I might be in trouble, so I greeted her, and she was about 200 pounds, and I went back to the car, and I just had my fist out.
18:19My friend, I could have just killed him, and he was giving me one of these, like, hey, you know.
18:23Later on, the girl was standing up on a chair dancing, and we were all sitting around there, and she fell through the wooden chair and just got stuck, and I went running away.
18:33I was so embarrassed.
18:34Okay, audience, before you decide who Don should go out with, let's take a look at all three men one more time, okay?
18:38First, there was Fernando.
18:39He's a personnel administrator, and he's 35 years old.
18:42David, a 34-year-old computer analyst.
18:44Finally, John, he's also 34, and he's an athletic director.
18:48Time to vote now.
18:49Who do you think the best man is for Don?
18:51Please make your choice, and make it right now, okay?
18:54What kind of man do you like, if you're really looking for the kind of guy you like to be with?
18:58Someone like me.
18:59Wonderful.
19:00Someone like you?
19:02It would be kind of tough to be a man to be like you, Don.
19:04I don't know how to tell you this.
19:05But what qualities?
19:08Someone that's very together and very sure of themselves, knows themselves well, and good sense of humor.
19:15Very important.
19:16Money?
19:16Intelligent.
19:17Intelligent.
19:18Rich is nice.
19:19Rich?
19:20Funny?
19:21Funny.
19:21Is that important?
19:22Funny?
19:23I mean, not funny looking, but funny.
19:26Probably not important.
19:27Good sense of humor, I guess.
19:28Just to have a good sense of humor, because I like to be a comic.
19:31Oh, so you want a reactor, you don't want an actor.
19:34I got you.
19:35I think the audience's vote is ready.
19:36Are you ready for this?
19:37Yes.
19:37Let's see who you won.
19:40Who won you, I should say.
19:42Fernando, 43%.
19:43Excited?
19:44Yes.
19:47That's fair enough.
19:49Okay.
19:49I hope this doesn't turn out to be your first bad date.
19:52It won't happen.
19:53It'll be fun.
19:53It'll be great.
19:54I promise.
19:54You're going to come back and tell us what a great time you had?
19:56Yes.
19:57Okay.
19:58I think that'll be great.
