00:00This one now is the most rich in Europe.
00:06And then...
00:08So we didn't participate in the Second World War.
00:14We were basically selling hand powder raw materials.
00:17We take into that, into our territory, we are the biggest country.
00:21Yeah, we did it in Bangkok and we did...
00:25Oh yeah, we did one in Vietnam too because I did a cocktail.
00:28On some level it was confirmation that I made the right decision.
00:32Because this time around it was very clear that the electorate chose to bring him back.
00:40Despite all of the things that failed in the first administration.
00:44Despite the poor handling of the pandemic.
00:47And the return of the rhetoric and the divisiveness.
00:53And so...
00:55Being here and seeing the second iteration sequel, if you will.
01:01And seeing that it's worse than the first time around.
01:03It was...
01:04It is confirmation.
01:05I think Americans still are flocking to Europe being countries.
01:18And Portugal in particular.
01:20While there is a growing right wing movement across many countries that is troublesome.
01:27Nobody has a crystal ball in terms of how this is going to play out.
01:33We've seen right wing factions start to rear their head in other countries.
01:41And then the electorate's been able to fight it back.
01:44And so that kind of gives at least some glimmer of hope that there is a chance that it won't be a complete and total takeover.
01:53There was a...
01:55There was a lay...
01:56She was pretty...
01:57I just had...
01:58I didn't find out...
01:59Have you been...
02:01No?
02:02I actually...
02:03Yes.
02:04It was a really good event.
02:10The same style.
02:12Oh, wow.
02:13It's very, very good.
02:14For me, it's when my...
02:15I didn't hold.
02:16I don't know.
02:17I didn't hold.
02:18I don't know.
02:19I'm not gonna do that.
02:20I don't know.
02:21Yeah.
02:22So...
02:23Yeah.
02:24Exactly.
02:26This second term, different, is that he has the U.S. Supreme Court.
02:32They've been able to successfully stack the court and create it where the Supreme Court has pretty much said anything that he does while he's president isn't illegal.
02:44And so what you're seeing right now is the administration testing the limits, the actual fabric of the Constitution.
02:54I haven't been to yet.
02:55I haven't been to yet.
02:56In Africa?
02:57Yeah.
02:58Namibia.
02:59Namibia.
03:00Namibia.
03:01Namibia.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Namibia.
03:04Yeah.
03:05While Susie stayed at home.
03:06Yeah, while Susie worked.
03:07Yeah.
03:08And it's only...
03:09We love this country, but we don't love what it has become.
03:26And, you know, I think, you know, I don't pride myself in any way on using any of Trump's phrases, but to make America great again is to restore that respect that we have for each other and for the world and to lead with compassion and not lead with revenge.
03:49The magnitude underscored the desire to leave, but if he had won by one electoral vote, we were still leaving because the end result is that he would be president.
04:04But the magnitude of it just really underscored how pervasive his thinking had permeated society here in the state.
04:16And then we couldn't get the flight connections, right?
04:19Right, right, right.
04:20We were like, oh, never mind, never mind.
04:21When your identity is being attacked, there is a personal sense of just, you know, anger, frustration.
04:35And when your identity is used as a political pawn as well.
04:42And so members of the LGBTQ community, you know, who themselves are having a part of their identity attack are feeling in different ways that we need to fight back.
05:03Well, Europe is not monolithic.
05:06So, you know, we did consider Italy for a while because certainly it's a beautiful country, has wonderful people.
05:13We've enjoyed traveling there.
05:15But politically, it's probably leaning a little bit too far to the right now.
05:22And we wouldn't want to move from a place that already has, you know, sort of dictator fastest leanings and head toward another country that may be fostering that as well, which is what made, you know, Spain and Portugal look more attractive to us as the sort of political climate better aligns with our values.
05:43Gascar.
05:44Yeah, you've been to Madagascar.
05:45Twice.
05:46Twice.
05:47Myanmar.
05:49Myanmar.
05:52There we go.
06:10Fair enough.
06:12We are glad that we're here. We feel safer here. We feel like our rights are more upheld here in the UK compared to what they might be in the United States.
06:29We believe in democracy and we do believe that democracy is being compromised under the current administration.
06:39And I joined their group of the Get Out the Vote.
06:44It's definitely within our plan to stay here on a permanent basis. So we are almost three years in.
06:52It will be year five before we can apply for indefinite leave to remain, which would give us a permanent residency.
07:02But then as soon as we can, it is our intent to apply for citizenship so that we would maintain and hold a dual citizenship between the two countries.
07:13Yeah. The amounts of requests have definitely, definitely, definitely increased.
07:25In fact, I mean, a little bit surprised at how much it has increased before offering a service to moving to Italy, especially catered towards Americans.
07:39Italy is a country that Americans dream about.
07:43They love. And it's been that way for years now.
07:46The difference I'm seeing now is that while a lot of people were thinking about it or considering it or maybe seeing they do it, you know, when they retired.
07:58I've seen people say this was something I dreamt about, but it's something that I need to do now.
08:07And so they've gone from thinking to actually putting it in practice.
08:12So what I think is the most consistent overarching pattern is people are uncertain about what's happening and what's going to happen.
08:27And so they're saying, I want to have the option to leave.
08:32To be continued...
