Kemi Badenoch has dismissed Nigel Farage’s suggestion that the Conservatives are “wiped out” following local election results, insisting the party remains the official opposition and is beginning the process of renewal. She acknowledged voter anger and growing competition from Reform UK and the Lib Dems but said the Conservatives would rebuild by sticking to their core values. Report by Covellm. 00:00Actually, what I would say, first of all, is congratulations to those Conservative candidates who have won
00:05and my sincere commiserations to those Conservative candidates who lost.
00:10This is not a reflection on them or their hard work.
00:14We always knew that this was going to be a challenging election.
00:17I'd been saying that right from the minutes that I became leader of the party late last year.
00:22And we are renewing our party, we are rebuilding, but it's going to be a long journey.
00:25I'm the leader of the opposition.
00:27We have 120 MPs in Parliament. The country made the Conservative Party the opposition.
00:32And one of the ways that we're going to rebuild trust is to make sure we do that job properly.
00:37We are holding Labour to account on education, on what they're doing with the economy,
00:41people complaining about the jobs tax, about winter fuel.
00:44We're the ones who are forcing votes on the grooming gang scandal, for example.
00:48So we are the opposition and we will continue to hold Labour's feet to the fire
00:52and make sure that Keir Starmer is the one-time term Prime Minister.
00:55It looks like he's on course for that.
00:57This is a very competitive political environment.
01:00All of the parties have always been competitors to us.
01:03They are all threats, whether it's Labour, Lib Dem or reform.
01:06And the way we win is by making sure that people can see that this is an authentic Conservative Party
01:11that stays true to its principles and its values,
01:14and that those values reflect the values of the majority of people in the country.
01:18That's what I'm going to be working to do.
01:20It's not going to take a short time.
01:23This sort of renewal takes a long time.
01:25But I've started that work and I will continue to do that.
01:28I'm not going to be knocked off course.
01:29But with all of them have a long time.
01:30Thank you so much.
01:31See you next time.
01:32Let's do it.
01:33Let's do it.
