00:00Like, just hearing you nod, this is you, isn't it?
00:02Yeah, this is my real voice. That was just a character I was playing.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 celebrities with voices no one expected.
00:12I'm saying, go back to England. That's actually what I'm trying to do.
00:19Number 10. Megan Mullally
00:21What would classic sitcom Will & Grace be without its standout supporting character Karen Walker?
00:27Her shrill, nasally voice became a trademark of her character, making each line delivery hilariously iconic.
00:34So listen, Jackie, Stan and I had this tropical getaway planned for next week,
00:38but seeing as how he's in the prison warding off French kisses from a 500-pound felon named Tiny, I got an extra ticket!
00:44Actress Megan Mullally actually used her real voice in the pilot episode of Will & Grace,
00:49but from the second episode on, her voice became gradually higher as she settled into the quirks of her character.
00:55Grace, you're, you're what, 40?
01:03I'll be 31 next month. So I round it up.
01:07Karen Walker was such a breakout role for Mullally that many fans were surprised to learn that Mullally's real voice wasn't nearly as cartoonish as her character's.
01:15The character needed an energy that my regular laconic speaking voice does not have.
01:24And so I just kept making it a little bit higher and a little bit higher.
01:27And then that became, you know, a good character trait for her to have.
01:32More recently, Mullally's real voice has become a bit more well-known due to her scene-stealing performances as Ron Swanson's ex-wife Tammy in Parks and Rec.
01:41We're going to spend 11 days in my cabin in the woods.
01:45We bought 10 cases of Gatorade and a 40-pound bag of peanuts for energy.
01:50Number 9. Steve-O.
01:51The rough, gravelly voice of this jackass star seems to fit his up-for-anything-extreme-risk-taking personality so well, it's surprising that it's not his real voice.
02:02You think about how the last movie had, like, the credits, which showed us when we first started and it was 10 years later.
02:09Yeah.
02:09And now it's another 10 years.
02:11Yeah.
02:12Gotta say, I look great, though.
02:13Even more shocking, Steve-O himself didn't know the sound of his real voice until just a few years ago.
02:19A meeting with an ear, nose, and throat doctor revealed that Steve-O had learned to speak entirely the wrong way.
02:25Rather than using his vocal cords, he spoke using his throat muscles.
02:29He said that I'm using, to speak, I'm using, like, the muscles above my vocal cords, which is making this, you know, weird thing.
02:43And I was like, wow, doc, like, you're telling me after everything I've been through, I just suck at talking.
02:48The star has been working with a vocal coach to practice speaking in a healthier way, and hearing his normal voice is pretty jarring.
02:55Now the dilemma is keep the voice he's known for, or embrace his new, healthier speaking voice.
03:01I worked with a vocal coach who was making some progress and teaching me to speak, like, you know, like, a little bit more.
03:09Who?
03:10Who?
03:12Number 8.
03:13Melissa Rausch.
03:14When Bernadette Rostenkowski was introduced in the third season of The Big Bang Theory,
03:19actress Melissa Rausch was determined to make a memorable impression.
03:22Don't take him too seriously.
03:24A lot of what he says is intended as humor.
03:28Yeah, well, I don't think it's very funny.
03:30Me neither.
03:31But he just lights up when I laugh.
03:33Fans slowly grew to love the small but mighty microbiologist and her signature squeaky voice.
03:40After 10 years playing the same character on one of the most popular shows on television,
03:44Rausch became closely linked to her character.
03:47Oh, hey, look, it's Bernadette.
03:49I can't tell you how many times Dr. Fowler was gonna give up.
03:54And I would say to her, Amy, as your best friend, I'm not gonna let you quit.
03:59For this reason, many Big Bang Theory fans are surprised when they discover that Rausch's
04:04voice sounds distinctly different from her character's.
04:07Interviews with the actress reveal that her squeaky voice was actually a brilliant character
04:11choice that made Bernadette instantly recognizable even before she appeared on screen.
04:16Bernadette's voice is very similar to my mother's, except without the Jersey accent.
04:21But, um, yeah, it's, uh, it's, my mother, it's not quite, quite that high, but it's, it's
04:29in that, in that tone, in that range.
04:32Number 7, Mia Goth.
04:34This actress has become a certified scream queen thanks to her recent roles in Ty West's
04:39ex-film series.
04:41It's not about what I want anymore, Mitzi.
04:44It's about making the best of what I have.
04:47Her impeccable southern accent in roles of both Maxine Minx and Pearls sounds so believable
04:53that many are shocked to learn that Goth isn't from the South and she's not even American
04:58at all.
04:59It's amazing.
04:59It's such an honor.
05:00I'm such a huge fan of his writing and the fact that he even knows that, you know, this
05:04trilogy exists and it's, it's, it's amazing.
05:07Goth was born in London and lived in the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Canada throughout her
05:12childhood.
05:13But her natural speaking voice is distinctively English.
05:16Goth's ability to totally transform her voice is truly a testament to her incredible
05:21talent.
05:22I came out here when I was 19 and the first place I stayed was in this little hotel, which
05:28funnily enough, I just drove past that hotel on my way, on my way to the Maxine premiere.
05:35So that felt very full circle, I guess.
05:38And then it was that Maxine billboard that was on Sunset for a little while.
05:42Number 6, Iggy Azalea.
05:44This Australian musician moved to the United States at age 16 with dreams of becoming a
05:49famous rapper.
05:50It took a few years, but she eventually landed a chart-topping single with 2014's Fancy.
05:56Like we bring an ADF back.
05:58What?
05:58Bring the hooks in with a bass in.
06:01Champagne spilling, you should taste that.
06:03Azalea's voice in her music is clearly influenced by the rap and hip-hop artists who came before
06:08her.
06:08Given that the genre was created by and popularized by black artists, this has led some to accuse
06:14Azalea of putting on a black scent in her music.
06:17I just can't worry about no haters, gotta stay on my grind.
06:20Now tell me who dat, who dat?
06:21They do dat, do dat.
06:22Interviews of Azalea speaking in her Aussie-accented natural voice further highlight the artificial
06:28nature of her performing voice.
06:30Failure was really not an option for me, I just, I had to keep going until I couldn't
06:36go anymore and there was a point when I thought I was gonna run out of money and I would have
06:40to go home and that was right before I put out the first song off my mixtape called Ignorant
06:46Art and I kinda did a bit of a gamble and I made this mixtape and it ended up paying for
06:50me.
06:515.
06:52Hugh Laurie
06:53Of course this entry will be no surprise to British viewers, but Americans who know
06:58Hugh Laurie from his long time role on House might be surprised to hear his real voice.
07:04With everybody being American around you, did it help make it more comfortable?
07:07Uh, no, I still, I still felt everything, it was like just trying to walk with everybody
07:13and you're the one, you're the one with a stone in your shoe and everyone else is just
07:17floating along and you're always going, ah that didn't sound right, ah that didn't
07:21sound right.
07:22Hugh was born in Oxford, England and rose to fame across the pond as part of a comedic
07:26duo with Stephen Frye.
07:28You must have been delighted to hear the news of the big push.
07:30Absolutely sir.
07:31Our chance to show the hum that it takes more than a pointy hat and bad breath to defeat
07:35the honors of King George.
07:36That's the spirit.
07:38Aside from a few film roles, Laurie was mostly unknown in the United States until House premiered
07:44in 2004.
07:45Boys do a home search, girls do lab tests.
07:49I'm pretty sure that's not sexist.
07:51Where have you been?
07:53Picking up dry cleaning, filling up a tank, violating the dead.
07:57Laurie's accent was so convincing, even House executive producer Bryan Singer didn't realize
08:03Laurie was British until after he'd already been cast.
08:06With Laurie in the starring role, the series was a massive success and ran for 8 seasons.
08:11The infamous founder of the defunct blood testing company Theranos was known for her strikingly
08:18deep voice.
08:19I work all the time and I'm basically in the office from the time I wake up and then working
08:25until I go to sleep every day.
08:27Many wondered whether it was genuine, digging through old interviews and talking with people
08:30from the time I wake up and then working until I go to sleep every day.
08:34I work with Holmes' past to ask whether she'd always spoken like that.
08:51This quickly revealed that her natural speaking voice was very different.
08:56And her deep baritone had been like a character for Holmes, putting on her market disrupting
09:01startup founder persona.
09:02I talked about it in an interview I did with Forbes that we made a decision to expand our
09:08test menu to include all the specialty and esoteric tests that are traditionally run only
09:15very infrequently but cost a huge amount of money.
09:18Once it came out that her Theranos technology was completely fake, Holmes was arrested and
09:24charged with fraud.
09:25While on trial, Holmes dropped the voice, some say in an effort to come across as softer and
09:31more genuine.
09:32The baritone voice is now gone.
09:36She just talks in a normal voice.
09:40Number 3.
09:41Larry the Cable Guy, Dan Whitney
09:43Nebraska-born Dan Whitney rose to fame under a completely new name and a totally new voice.
09:48Alright, one more joke like that, I'm getting the hell out of here, alright, cause that's
09:54what I'm called for right there.
09:55Better known as Larry the Cable Guy, his distinctive southern accent was so hilariously compelling
10:00that it got him cast in a massive Pixar franchise as the anthropomorphic tow truck tow-mater.
10:06The inspiration for his southern persona came from his college roommates from Georgia and Texas at the University of Nebraska, where Whitney studied drama and speech.
10:11With a clear passion for comedy and a talent for manipulating his voice, it's no surprise Whitney became successful with such a distinctive and memorable character.
10:19I hang out with people that talk like that, so I picked it up, I picked it up in Georgia when I went to college, I'm able to talk like that, I can turn it on and turn it off anytime I want.
10:262. Paris Hilton
10:27Paris Hilton
10:28Paris Hilton
10:29Sorry, I'm doing a cooking tutorial and I have none of the correct things. I don't know what this is, but it looks like it will work. Yeah, it's working.
10:35Paris Hilton was everywhere in the early 2000s, and so was her trademark voice. Her breathy, baby voice tone seemed to fit the way.
10:42It's not just a lot of people that talk like that, but it's not just a lot of people that talk like that. So I picked it up in Georgia when I went to college, I'm able to talk like that, I can turn it on and turn it off anytime I want.
10:462. Paris Hilton
10:48Sorry, I'm doing a cooking tutorial and I have none of the correct things. I don't know what this is, but it looks like it will work. Yeah, it's working.
10:56Paris Hilton was everywhere in the early 2000s, and so was her trademark voice. Her breathy, baby voice tone seemed to fit the way.
11:04Persona of a ditzy socialite that was marketed to the public during her time on The Simple Life.
11:10It's the smallest town ever. There's nothing. There's like one store, one market, one gas station, like one hair salon.
11:19No one suspected her voice wasn't genuine, but Hilton revealed in 2020 that she had been putting on a character the entire time.
11:26Hilton, who survived abusive boarding schools as a teenager, says she created her ditzy blonde persona as a protective mask in response to her trauma.
11:34Sometimes I feel like so many things, but sometimes like this robot and this character that I did and talking with them, like I started remembering who I was before.
11:48Though Hilton still frequently uses her character voice in public appearances, she noticeably switches to her natural voice anytime she's dealing with a serious topic.
11:58My sweatsuit, my socks, being at home and then all this other stuff is just part of the character.
12:08Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
12:12Katherine Langford. No one knew she was really Australian after her breakout performance as Hannah Baker.
12:18Is that something you learned from watching television or from friends or studying or what?
12:23Um, I mean, I think, I mean, partially probably just like from watching films.
12:27I mean, I feel like everyone who doesn't grow up in America vicariously lives through like American films.
12:31But I think that and also like, I'm a little bit musical.
12:35Stephanie Beatriz.
12:36Rose's tough, deep voice on Brooklyn Nine-Nine sounds nothing like her real voice.
12:41Melissa got cast before me.
12:43And I read that she had been cast and I was like, I cried because I thought I'm so happy for her.
12:48But I also know that there's no way that a network is going to cast two Latinas.
12:52There's just, it doesn't happen.
12:54There's only one of us ever, you know?
12:56And then like two days later, my agents were like, guess what?
12:58That was amazing.
13:00Really good.

13:161.
13:18Michael Jackson
13:19There were many elements that made up the king of pop's unforgettable persona.
13:24One significant one being his high-pitched voice.
13:27Remember something, just because it's in print doesn't mean it's the gospel.
13:31People write negative things because they feel that's what sells.
13:37Good news to them doesn't sell.
13:39His distinctive voice was a signature of his music that seemed to carry over into his speaking voice,
13:44at least according to many public interviews.
13:47However, some fans point to certain concert footage and other videos of Jackson where he speaks in a more natural sounding voice,
13:54alleging that this was his real voice.
13:56Liza Minnelli, a close friend of Jackson's, says she heard his natural speaking voice on rare occasions.
14:02Like Paris Hilton, it appears that Jackson's voice was part of his public persona, and he used his real voice only in private and on serious occasions.
14:24Which celebrity voice surprised you the most?
14:39Let us know in the comments.
14:41You wouldn't let him spoil up all girls' lies and then run away without pieing?
14:45We'd go out of business, my girl.
14:47You wouldn't go off without pieing either.
