00:01Get ready, fight!
00:03And the hardest fighting sport tournament in the world is off and running, dead or alive.
00:08The video game DOA has been whipping up excitement in fans for 10 years now
00:13and the hot mix of sexy girls and cracking action is now on the big screen.
00:22The filmmakers have definitely found an unbeatable team with this group of lead actresses.
00:27As models, they are used to putting their womanly wiles into action
00:31and in Dead or Alive, they get the chance to show their stuff.
00:38May I help you?
00:39You're under arrest.
00:46Someone broke into the safe at the Hotel Peking last night.
00:50Stole cash and diamonds.
00:52We received an anonymous tip, it was you.
00:54Tell me about the diamonds.
00:56Well, they're a girl's best friend.
00:59Made from carbon, subjected to high pressure.
01:02Traditionally a 60th wedding anniversary gift.
01:05And they're forever.
01:07Christie's very money hungry.
01:09She's a jewel thief.
01:10She loves diamonds and appreciates the finer things in life.
01:14Would you hand me my bra, please?
01:26It's old news that blondes prefer diamonds, but they are rarely so sexily portrayed as by the young Australian Holly Valance.
01:35She joins the competition, not so much for the fighting, but more for the 10 million if you win.
01:45She's probably not the best fighter there. She knows that, but there's other ways she can get around it, I'm sure.
01:50Christie is supported by her accomplice and lover Max.
01:51You'd never have come here if you'd gone away with all that money.
01:53And you wouldn't have been invited to DOA without demolishing the pride of the Hong Kong police.
01:56Don't tell me you want me to help you steal the 10 million dollar prize money.
02:00Try 100 million.
02:02Just waiting for us in a vault on the island.
02:05And then say, you're the best fighter there.
02:07It's just a simple way to join the best fighter there.
02:09She knows that.
02:10But there's other ways she can get around it, I'm sure.
02:13Christie is supported by her accomplice and lover Max.
02:16You've never come here if you'd gone away with all that money.
02:19And you wouldn't have been invited to DOA without demolishing the pride of the Hong Kong police.
02:23in a vault on the island.
02:26What's the catch?
02:28Well, we have to find the vault and we have to crack the code.
02:31The usual.
02:34Shall I tell you more?
02:37Later.
02:38Right now, I'd prefer you do something else with your mouth.
02:44He has a really beautiful relationship with Christy,
02:48kind of an ongoing love-hay kind of relationship,
02:51and he plays on it a lot within this movie.
02:57Do you do squats?
02:59Sorry.
03:00Just it without my hands.
03:02We're playing volleyball. You want in?
03:04Yeah, let's play.
03:09If you must know, I was working.
03:11No, working it seemed a better description.
03:14For female wrestler Tina Armstrong, it's not a question of love or money.
03:24She wants to show the male world what she's made of.
03:27Hi, Dad. What's up?
03:28Sweetheart, I just hope you know what you're giving up.
03:31Dad, we already talked about this.
03:32But if you get the afternoon flight, you can still make it to the Tag Team Championship in Des Moines.
03:37Dad, I already told you, I am done wrestling. I'm done being fake. I'm done.
03:42Her father owns the wrestling federation, so she grew up with all boys being a wrestler with her father,
03:48and trying to be as good as the boys.
03:50And this is finally her opportunity, and she gets invited to DOA to prove herself that she is a real fighter,
03:58and in fact can stand on her own two feet.
04:08Off screen, Jamie Presley is just as independent as her character Tina.
04:12She even has her own fashion line, and yet there's still a major difference.
04:17She's got quite a bit of testosterone in her, I should say.
04:23Japanese Princess Kazumi is on a quest for the truth.
04:39Devon Aoki already flashed her martial arts talent in the movie adaptation of the comic book Sin City.
04:44This time she must prevail against her bodyguard, Hayabusa.
04:48Princess Kazumi, your brother is dead. Your destiny is to lead your people.
04:55I will not believe he is dead until I see his body.
05:03There is no body.
05:07Then he is not dead.
05:09She decides that she needs to find her brother because she's not convinced that he's gone.
05:17And she knows he was the best fighter.
05:21And so, you know, she can't understand why he's not back.
05:24I am going to find him.
05:26The guards won't let you leave.
05:28I am not a cricket in a box.
05:30I alone determine my destiny.
05:33But Princess, as your brother's best friend, you must let me help you.
05:36If my brother is really dead, then you are no longer his best friend.
05:41He is a ninja, a really strong ninja.
05:46He is supposed to protect the princess.
05:50But when the princess leaves her clan, we are really supposed to kill her.
05:56But because I like her and am in love with her, I actually continue to protect her.
06:03Hayabusa follows Kazumi to the tournament.
06:06Together, they hope to shed light on the secret of the missing brother.
06:12I really, really enjoyed when I first started working on this film.
06:23It was funny because people were sort of treating me like a princess, you know, calling me princess.
06:30And I was just like, this is really weird.
06:33And we know whether our princesses, evil stepsisters are not far behind.
06:37And so her half-sister Ayane is supposed to make Devon's life hard on screen.
06:54Ayane is half-sister to Kasumi.
06:59And basically, I guess there's a little rivalry there because Kasumi was always the spoiled one in the family.
07:13And I was, you know, Ayane.
07:16Got a bit of a second-hand thing going on.
07:20I'm your servant.
07:22But if you leave, I'm honor-bound to kill you.
07:29D.O.A. Combatants, your host, Dr. Victor Donovan.
07:58Welcome to you all.
08:03Dead or Alive was created by the late, great, Fame Douglas, Helena's father and my very good friend.
08:14Fame's will decreed this tournament.
08:17And as of this year, marking her 21st birthday, Helena's participation.
08:22D.O.A. Tournament is the competition with all the greatest martial artists in the world, fighting to win the $10 million prize and the title of number one.
08:35Sounds exciting, but it's quite dangerous. The fight is illegal and strictly underground. Scientist and organizer Dr. Donovan sets the rules.
08:44Fights can happen any time, any place, against anyone. I select match-ups based on computer analysis of the most competitive scenarios.
08:56The computer will broadcast your opponent's image to your ID bracelet. No weapons are allowed in a D.O.A. fight except the human weapon.
09:06Get ready, fight!
09:16It's a fun competition. It's fun and then it just gets kind of complicated and twisted with these side stories.
09:26From day one, the actresses put their complete faith in the production team, whose recent cinematic adaptation of Resident Evil earned more than 600 million euros at the box office and on DVD.
09:37The producers are the absolute top dogs in this genre and are looking to continue their success streak with the movie adaptation of the Xbox game Dead or Alive.
09:45My little brother is a D.O.A. fan himself. And so when I got offered this movie, he was like, if you don't take this role, I'm going to be so curious with you.
10:03I'd never played it before, the project, but now I've played it. We have an Xbox in our rooms, all the girls. We love it.
10:11It's really successful because it's women kicking butt.
10:15The game's great. Cain and I, who plays High Abuse actually, we fight each other a lot on the Xbox.
10:24And we both use the same character because I think the High Abuse characters are the coolest.
10:29I think Cain beat me 27-0 once. Yeah. Yeah, I think I'll stick to the acting.
10:39It's surprisingly pretty close. When I go and play the game now and I look at the way the characters are on screen and I look at how everybody's transformed in the way of hair and makeup and wardrobe and totally become these people.
10:54The film is, of course, supposed to be even better than its model, and director and martial arts icon, Corey Yen, got his work rolling by considering the differences.
11:02It's quite difficult to really have a movie that is very similar to a game because the fun of the game is on control by the human hand.
11:14But this movie is actually very alive. To get this, I wanted to capture the spirit, the liveliness and the energy out of the game, put it into this movie.
11:24I think this movie is more powerful.
11:27This passion for detail shows in the film through the many superimpositions, split screens and graphics drawn partially from the video game, and in the adaptation of the game's characters.
11:37We're definitely learning the fighting styles of our characters. You know, everyone has a different sort of technique. And for my character, for example, she's a ninja. So I use swords. I use a staff. I do a lot of kicks and a lot of sort of, you know, blocks and stuff like that.
11:59To keep the movements looking as authentic as possible, the girls spent three long, hard months training with instructors from the US Marine Corps and martial arts experts.
12:11We cast them three to four months before we started shooting. So I had allocated a long time for them to train. And I assumed that they were young, they would be fit. And we had them with Corey's trainers in a gym in LA.
12:25I learned pain in places I didn't know existed and was crippled for about the first three weeks, but eventually worked through that. And it was very interesting watching strength changes and flexibility changes.
12:38Some of them didn't really have too much of a martial arts background. So I was really surprised how much they pick up in like two, three months.
12:46And if anyone can cast judgment here, then it came Kozugi, son of the greatest Japanese cinematic action star of the 80s.
12:55It's really nice to work with him because he is such an expert in the martial arts field.
13:01Kane Kozugi began his training in the Oriental martial arts when he was only eight and won many tournaments.
13:06KEN KOZUKI
13:10Competition in movies is different because when you're doing movies, you want to make it as beautiful and as big as possible.
13:17Compared to competition, you just want to get points. You just want to punch as fast and kick as fast as possible.
13:26Karate, judo, kendo, taekwondo and wushu are already part of Kane Kozugi's repertoire, but the martial arts expert is always open for new ideas.
13:36Before this, I started breakdancing because they have some nice moves that I can put in action.
13:44So I was always looking for new things.
13:48As with the game it's modeled on, many of the fights in the film take place in unusual locations. Yet another challenge for the actors.
13:55We had to do the fight sequence on bamboo rafts in the water. So the balance was very difficult and the most difficult part of our fight sequence was both of us have bad knees.
14:10Dad, you bit me. Sorry, we'll wrestle reflex. Dad, you have to understand. I'm here to prove that I'm not a fake. Even if that means I have to hurt you.
14:30I felt so bad because the very first punch that I threw, I nailed him in the eye. He had a black eye for a good week and a half.
14:39Jamie is, you know, Jamie's the real deal. She really fights hard, you know. I mean, they all do.
14:46Everyone is doing almost all their stunts.
14:53It's, you know, 450 cement stairs that we're fighting on. I'm fighting 24 guards and geishas. I'm holding two 15-pound samurai swords.
15:09It's definitely challenging and, but it's the most exciting thing that I've done yet on this film because the stunts are just fantastic.
15:24My knees and my arms and everything was blue. And I used to spend more time doing make-up on my body before I went out on a Friday night than my actual face, trying to cover everything up so no one thought it would be.
15:42I was like, you know, domestic violence or anything like that.
15:58But beyond the strong physical challenges, the filming of DOA also required a lot of patience.
16:04It takes a long time to shoot a fight scene. The last one I did took seven days, my scene with Holly.
16:15They all learn the moves, and then each scene is storyboarded. On average, it takes about eight days to shoot each individual fighting scene.
16:27Corey likes to take a lot more time with his fight sequences, which is why he's, you know, number one martial arts director, action guy.
16:35Corey Yen already thrilled the public of millions with the action film The Transporter. And as a true pro, he also appears at times in front of the camera.
16:44He was also an actor, so he understands actors and acting. And he also doubled Bruce Lee, for instance.
16:51So the fact that Bruce Lee would have to have a double and the fact that anybody could double Bruce Lee says how great he was.
16:58And he's a middle-aged man now, but he's remarkable.
17:04The scenes in which the actors move about in the air were particularly complicated to shoot.
17:08Like at the beginning of the film, all tournament participants had to jump out of the plane.
17:17To get to DOA Island, you have to bail out now. Parachutes are under your seat. Just aim for the Buddha on your left. Have fun.
17:28Oh, and one more thing. Whoever doesn't make it to the compound by sundown is disqualified.
17:39Princess, allow me to go first.
17:45Fifty feet suspended in the air, this little platform. And I had to jump off, almost like, it's supposed to be for the skydiving scene, but I had a skydiving pack and everything and I'm attached to these wires.
17:57And I have a wire around my waist and a wire around my foot. And it was crazy. It was such an adrenaline rush.
18:06And I, you know, you literally fall so far and you have these, you know, these five guys that are holding your wire.
18:13So you're like, you're looking at them going, okay guys, are you, are you ready?
18:25At the director's specific request, Dead or Alive was shot at film studios in China.
18:29This movie could actually have been shot in a lot of places. For example, the States or Australia.
18:38But the reason why I wanted to come to China is because I wanted to bring back an Asian touch, an oriental touch to the movie.
18:48Especially because in the game, a lot of the characters, the costumes, are kind of oriental or Japanese.
19:02Our costume designer, Frank Helmer, he's doing a really, really good job.
19:07And at the same time, I think all the other characters really look very close to the game.
19:12And I think that's, you know, what we're really trying to achieve here is being as close to the characters as possible.
19:19So the fans aren't disappointed when they see the movie.
19:22And to keep that from happening, one scene in particular is very important.
19:26The beach volleyball tournament with the girls in skimpy bikinis.
19:45We went through about 40 pairs of bikinis for, I think I wear three or so in the entire film.
19:52But yes, they play a very large role in this feature.
19:57I just chose a really colourful bathing suit.
20:00Helene is so cheerful. It's cheerful, bright yellow. That's her colour.
20:09Boys are going to want to watch cute girls in bikinis. They're going to like it.
20:13And girls like to see girls that can kick butt.
20:16Don't you think that guy in the second row is cute?
20:18Is there a guy in this world you don't have a crush on?
20:23You can have him.
20:25But what about the other 300?
20:30But the action is only the basis of the movie.
20:33The friendship between the girls is more important for me.
20:36And how they go from competing with one another to actually becoming friends.
20:39You can become a very good friend.
20:41You can become a very good friend.
20:42In fact, this process is pretty good.
20:46At the beginning of the movie, when the girls first land on DOA Island,
20:50they discover this huge Buddha statue and have to get up to the top,
20:53which is about a hundred feet high.
20:54Looks like we landed off target.
20:57How in hell are we supposed to get up there?
21:12We'd better get going.
21:14Well, you're both on your own. I don't do teams.
21:17That's fine with me. Any team your part of is bound to lose anyway.
21:19Well, I'll remember that when I'm collecting the 10 million.
21:25They start off everybody on their own, but their time is very short
21:28because they have to get to the top before sunset.
21:31So it is about the middle when they find out
21:32that they have to work with each other to get to the top.
21:39Corey Yen has already achieved his goals
21:41and is looking forward to the reaction of the worldwide audience.
21:44Welcome to DOA. Glad you made it.
21:54Dead or Alive is more than just a cinematic adaptation of a video game.
21:59The martial arts adventure captures the imagination
22:01through a fast-paced story, fantastic stunts and very sweet girls indeed.
22:05Dead or Alive.
22:06Dead or Alive.
22:11assadors איךَ
22:17good lows indeed.
22:18world
