00:30So how long have you been here at Hogle Zoo?
00:31I have been here at Hogle Zoo for about eight years.
00:34Wow, and how long have you been working with Ebony?
00:35I've been working for Ebony nearly that entire time.
00:38I've been her primary keeper for about the last five years.
00:41Excellent, well let's go meet her.
00:44Hello Ebony.
00:46That is her greeting.
00:47She's just telling us hello.
00:49And she's going to come down and say hi to us.
00:51Hi city girl.
00:53What a good girl.
00:54So Ebony has been here at the zoo for about 35 years.
00:58And we aren't exactly sure how old she is because she came in already as an adult.
01:02But she is at least 35 years.
01:04And so she's gotten the routine of living here at the zoo down pretty well.
01:08She knows that the keepers are the ones with the treats.
01:10Right.
01:10And so as you can see she's hoping for more treats.
01:12So Ebony, as you can see with her coat she has some bare spots.
01:16The skin looks pretty dry in those areas.
01:19And just like you and I, especially here in Utah in a desert climate, we'll get dry skin.
01:23I know I have to put a whole lot more lotion on, especially in the winter.
01:26And the same thing with Ebony.
01:27She gets dry skin.
01:28She has seasonal allergies.
01:30So what are we going to do today with Ebony?
01:31So today we're going to give her one of her medicines that she's getting.
01:34So Ebony every day gets a fish oil capsule to help with her coat.
01:38Fish oil is a supplement that a lot of people will take for themselves.
01:41I was going to say it looks like something you get from the store.
01:43Yeah, exactly.
01:43Yeah.
01:44And she is a great medicine taker.
01:46So we're going to see if she'll come down back again.
01:49Good girl.
01:51So she's going to chew her capsule.
01:53Look at that.
01:54No big deal.
01:55Yep.
01:55What a good girl.
01:57And then we do follow it up with a treat because everybody else that gets medicine gets a special
02:01treat for it.
02:02And then we're also going to do some topical treatment with her today.
02:05And she'll just stick her arm out.
02:07Arm or tail.
02:09Good girl.
02:10And then we can just rub it all over.
02:12Good job, Ebony.
02:14Yeah, I think a lot of people don't know a lot of times when animals do have allergies,
02:17the treatment is very similar to what people get, right?
02:19It is, especially with the primates.
02:21Their bodies are so similar to ours and the way their bodies process medications is so
02:27similar that a lot of times we'll even use human medications in order to combat those
02:31allergies.
02:32Good girl.
02:33Well, thank you so much, Lindsey.
02:35You are welcome.
02:35And Ebony, too, for letting us learn a little bit about how you treat an animal with maybe
02:39some skin conditions and allergies and learning more about Ebony.
02:42Ebony saying goodbye.
