00:00We are at the Langer Glass House in Sun Bear Forest down Central Street.
00:13We just saw an infant Francois Langer that was born last week to a first-time mom.
00:18The baby is doing fantastic. We're all really excited, really impressed.
00:32The baby has gotten a lot stronger within just the last week.
00:36It's starting to look around and be very curious about its environment, which is exciting.
00:42So, this species practices alloparenting, which is where every family member participates in raising the infant.
00:54So, the infant is passed around to all the family members, and you're never quite sure which one is going to have them at the moment,
01:00but they all take great care of the baby.
01:12So, the infant is born orange, and the adults are black.
01:28So, the thinking goes that being orange, everybody wants to hold and investigate the infant,
01:33which will increase the odds that the infant will survive and be taken care of by the family.
01:39The Francois Langers are endangered. They are being hunted in the wild, and there's only a few thousand left.
01:52And in North America, there's a little under a hundred within the zoos here, so every birth counts.
01:58The great thing about the Francois Langers is they are fairly active throughout the day,
02:08and they'll either be sleeping in the sun or they'll be foraging, but either way, they're fun to watch.
