00:00Hi, my name is Shannon and I am a keeper here at the Children's Zoo at the St. Louis Zoo and we are standing in front of Layla. She is our American crow here in the Children's Zoo. There are actually over 40 different species of crows that are found throughout the world. They come in different sizes, small to large. This species is particularly found throughout the United States and the southwestern parts of Canada.
00:25So here at the St. Louis Zoo we like to provide our animals with a variety of enrichment. So today we are going to be offering Layla a Kerplunk feeder. You may have played a similar game.
00:34Well what we do here is that we put some of her food in here from her regular diet or food she would be offered through the day. There are also some special treats in there and she has to figure out how to get that food.
00:45So basically she has learned that if she pulls these sticks out the food is going to drop to the ground and that actually is something that crows do in the wild.
00:53They feed on the ground so it is a very natural behavior and crows are actually highly intelligent birds. They are very smart.
00:59Let's see if Layla can solve this puzzle.
01:23Today we solved the puzzle of why American crows are so smart. Thank you for joining me here at the St. Louis Zoo.
01:41Thank you.
