00:00The U.S. has agreed to commence formal negotiations with Malaysia on the 24% tariff rate set to be

00:07imposed on Malaysian imports, says Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz.

00:14Tengku Zafrul said talks will focus on three specific areas, namely reducing the 24% rate,

00:20non-tariff trade barriers, and trade imbalance between the two nations.

00:24He added that the Deputy Secretary General will lead talks with the U.S.,

00:28which has named an assistant trade representative as its chief negotiator, Bernama reported.

00:35Currently, a 24% tariff on most Malaysian goods, part of a broader tariff policy affecting about 60 countries,

00:41has been suspended for 90 days to facilitate trade negotiations.

00:46Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul led a delegation to Washington to discuss the tariffs from April 23rd to 27th.

00:53The Wall Street Journal had reported that U.S. President Donald Trump was seeking to use tariff talks

00:58with affected countries to push them to curb trade with China and rein in Beijing's manufacturing dominance.

01:05In return, these nations could secure reductions in U.S. levies and trade barriers.

01:11However, China issued a stark warning to countries against striking a trade deal with the U.S. at its expense,

01:18ratcheting up the trade war between the world's two biggest economies.
