People's Action Party's (PAP) anchor for its slate in Sembawang GRC Ong Ye Kung said at a rally on Monday night (April 28) that the opposition is here to stay.

He said the opposition should not have a "free pass" just as the PAP does not get a blank cheque from voters.

00:00We do. They talk. We implement. They claim credit. We work hard. They say you work hard
00:12because I make you work hard. There's no blank check for the PAP. There will be opposition.
00:18Opposition is here to stay. But if the PAP has no blank check, opposition, you have no free pass.
00:25If you have a proposal, if you have an alternative, be prepared to be scrutinized by the PAP and by the people.
00:34This is because whether you are the incumbent or the opposition, you play very different roles.
00:40The opposition is a challenger of the status quo. Your role is to question, cast doubt, make you angry, tear things down.
00:49But when they fought and they have won, they have to take over and govern.
00:55And that is a totally different matter.
00:59All the small municipal issues that when you are opposition, you keep complaining about and they try to amplify,
01:07they don't go away just because you take over. They are still there.
01:11The bird dropping is still there. Cleanliness is still there. Everything is still there.
01:15But now, it becomes your problem. The nuts and bolts of intense technical decisions come in.
01:23You want to do one policy, benefit one group, don't benefit another group, you have to keng tau now.
01:27How to do this? As a challenger, you don't have to care.
01:31Once you take over, you must take care of everyone.
