00:00The tip, the tip, the tip, the tip.
00:02What? Oh, no.
00:04You put me off, you sussies.
00:06The games have begun.
00:08Let's get over there, boys.
00:12Two friends. Boom.
00:14Look at that.
00:16On a fishing bucket list tour.
00:18Want a piece of this action, Bob?
00:20Footballing fisherman Bobby Zamora.
00:22And that's more likely.
00:24And me, Ali Hamidi.
00:26I'm an Iranian wrestler.
00:28Madabra.
00:30This series we're touring Spain and France.
00:33Look at that.
00:35On our greatest mission to date.
00:37Did you see that?
00:38Well done, Tesla.
00:40It won't all be plain sailing.
00:42I'm actually scared.
00:44It's a stingray.
00:45But we will be trying to catch the biggest and best fish.
00:49What a beast, eh?
00:50What an achievement, mate.
00:52Yes.
00:54This is the Grand Fishing Adventure.
00:57Yes.
00:58Yes.
00:59Look at the size of the thing.
01:01Mate, that is mental.
01:03Ah, Bobby.
01:04I love France.
01:05I love it.
01:06This is the country for personal bests.
01:07I couldn't live here, though.
01:08Could you?
01:09Well, I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:10But...
01:11I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:12But...
01:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:14What about French?
01:15What's your French like?
01:16That's even worse.
01:17How about that?
01:18France.
01:19Land of the monsters.
01:20So many people.
01:21I can't speak a word of French.
01:22I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:24I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:28I love it.
01:28This is the country for personal bests.
01:32I couldn't live here though, could you?
01:34Well, I can't speak a word of English at all.
01:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:41What about French?
01:42What's your French like?
01:43That's even worse, how about that?
01:46France, land of the monsters.
01:49So many places to go at, so many different types of venues
01:53and so many, huge, huge carp.
01:57I'm looking forward to the French adventure.
01:59I've fished in France before.
02:01I've caught a few big fish as well,
02:02so it's exciting to be back on ground that I've fished before.
02:07Our grand French fishing adventure finds us
02:10in the northern part of the country
02:11with our destination just 100 kilometres
02:14south-east of Paris, Trebien.
02:23We were driving to a complex of lakes called Carpassons,
02:26famed among anglers for its giant King Carp,
02:29but we were heading to a small intimate water
02:31nestled between trees that holds Koi Carp,
02:34aptly named the Koi Park.
02:37This lake holds around 100 of this multi-coloured variety
02:41of carp that originate from Eastern Asia.
02:45And this first mission had a bit of competitive spice to it.
02:49Right, so, should we have a little match?
02:51Yes, we need a little competition.
02:53So there's no trophy, so we should do a forfeit instead.
02:56So, say it happens to the loser.
02:58Whoever catches the most colourful is clear.
03:00They're in the clear.
03:01The loser should get to eat a baguette.
03:07Yeah? Sounds good up to there, doesn't it?
03:09Yeah.
03:09With snails in it.
03:11No butter, nothing.
03:13Just straight snails, maybe a bit of sand.
03:15Garlic, a little bit of garlic in there.
03:17Unseasoned.
03:20They'll probably come with herbs anyway.
03:21Don't worry about it.
03:22It'll probably be me that eats them anyway.
03:26I'm not really a fanatic about eating snails.
03:30So, eating snails as a result of losing,
03:34that makes me want to win.
03:36Love to win a competition, any sport, whatever it may be,
03:40but this one I certainly don't want to lose.
03:42Don't like the taste of snails, so I'll be doing anything to win.
03:47Maybe not fair.
03:51We didn't have a lot of time,
03:52so it was a case of hitting the ground running.
03:55Techers-wise, we were going to be fishing on the deck with rigs similar
03:59to how we would fish for king carp, but very slightly scaled down.
04:03We'd be using higher tracked hook baits, but starting with different colours
04:06to try to determine what the koi were fancying on the day.
04:10And for even more added attraction, we'd be using higher tracked ground bait
04:14made up of crushed pellets and also cell boilies that we put in dissolving PVA mesh bags.
04:24Ready?
04:25Well, I would wish you good luck, but I'll be lying.
04:27I don't want to eat snails either.
04:29Off your pot.
04:30No, mate, go on.
04:30Me first.
04:31I think it's quite a long cast, this, with a PVA bag.
04:35Here we go.
04:36Up a tree?
04:36What do you reckon?
04:38I hope so.
04:39Up a tree?
04:39I hope so.
04:40I'm going up a tree.
04:42I might not even reach the tree.
04:43He's got the tip, the tip, the tip, the tip.
04:45What?
04:46Oh, no, you put me off, you sausage.
04:49The games have begun.
04:52Well, then, you get your rod out.
04:54Well, tip, tip.
04:55Too late, too late, too late.
04:56Tip, tip.
04:56Oh, short, short, short, short.
04:58Oh, perfect.
05:00So I had snow on it.
05:02Well, it's nowhere near the trees.
05:03What, are you fishing for congrills?
05:04Mate, don't you worry about me.
05:05Fishing for congers in 90-foot water.
05:07Don't you worry about me, mate.
05:09Don't you worry about me.
05:11I then managed to get another PVA bag sorted and the rod cast back out.
05:16Now that's how you cast under a tree.
05:19And while Zamora faffed about spraying bait all over the gaff,
05:22I even got my second rod out, too.
05:26He's not as sharp these days, the old washed-up footballer.
05:31Finally, he got himself sorted, but I've known snails that are quicker.
05:39The next hour turned out even slower than Bob getting his rods out,
05:45and the sun was beating down with temperatures steadily rising.
05:56Hot, innit? It's going to be hard today.
05:58It's going to be a struggle.
05:59Not the greatest conditions, pal, but it could be a 1-0-er, Zamora.
06:07Any colour would do, wouldn't it?
06:10Yeah, it could be. Any fish could do, could win.
06:12How boring is that, eh?
06:15Let's hope he was wrong.
06:17The hours began to slowly pass as the temperatures steadily soared.
06:22And while I tried to take solace from the sun,
06:25Zamora wandered off looking super shady.
06:37Old mateys in the shade the other side, I'm just thinking outside the box.
06:43It's not great conditions and it doesn't look good,
06:47but I'm going for, if I catch a fish, it's the most colourful fish, right?
06:53So I'm going to try and nab one of these.
06:58Oh, there's one over the top.
07:00We have got a lot of lovely colour here. Look at that.
07:19Look at the colours of that.
07:21We'll keep that one in the back pocket.
07:23Listen, I've seen these little things in the side.
07:28They look like they've got a little bit of something about them.
07:30Lovely sunfish, bright and sunny.
07:34At this stage in the proceedings, I was unaware of Zamora's sneaky scoop
07:37and had decided to try and tempt a koi carp the big bunch of worms
07:41in a simple float set up just down from where I was fishing on the tree line.
07:45A bunch of worms, a float and just this little bit of putty over a swivel.
07:55So what will happen is this will lay on the deck, this part on the bottom
08:00and then the rest of the line will go up to the float like this.
08:04So it's called fishing over depth on a float.
08:08But yeah, it enables us to creep in this little area and see if we can catch one.
08:16As I went to drop the float in, a few koi were in dead close and spooked off,
08:20but hopefully they'd return.
08:28While Zamora was catching some zeds, I had a little tickle on the float.
08:34Oh, oh, we've got mine. We've got mine.
08:37Ah, what? God, that was close.
08:40That proper line ripped off. There's stuff down there.
08:44I don't know what it is, but there's stuff down there.
08:46I had a feeling it wasn't actually koi carp.
08:50I think it's catfish.
08:54Little catfish.
08:54Some little rascal was playing with my worm.
09:02Here we go.
09:03Whee, we're off the mark. Whee, we're off the mark. Whee, there we go.
09:18That is what has been smacking our worms.
09:22And now that's what we call, in France, a poisson chat.
09:27And Zamora was none the wiser.
09:29Now, I am pretty certain we did not say the most colourful koi. We just said the most colourful.
09:39So that is most certainly the most colourful fish of the day.
09:43The poisson chat. Most certainly not sacred.
09:50Bye-bye, little chat.
09:57It got me.
09:58I called it a day on the float fishing just as a weather front came in from nowhere.
10:15It finally calmed down after an hour and a half,
10:18but we'd resigned ourselves to a defeat on the koi front.
10:24Blame the weather. This rain came too late.
10:27Mate, it's a bit of a disaster.
10:31Very, very slow.
10:33Almost a snail's pace.
10:37Come on then, let's get them in.
10:40We knew it was going to be a tall order from the beginning.
10:42The weather definitely against us and just when it was time to really pack up,
10:47the weather turned like we would have liked it from the beginning.
10:51Wasn't meant to be. The koi dream lives on.
10:55Overall, disappointed.
10:57But every snail has a silver lining.
11:00Ah, yes, the escargoes.
11:02Well, after a steward's inquiry, it was decided that Bob's dodgy neck caught some fish
11:07was more colourful than my poisson chat.
11:09I think it's a fix, to be honest.
11:11We never actually said it has to be caught on rod and lion.
11:14You've scooped a sunk, I think they're a sunkissed bass, innit?
11:18Right. Do I have to eat it with the shells? No.
11:20No, mate.
11:21Mate, you are no stranger to eating strange things,
11:23or certainly having strange things in your mouth,
11:25so this is just like another day in the life of Ali Hamidi.
11:30Bon appétit, as they say.
11:31Why don't you give me at least a fist bump? Cheers.
11:33I can't believe you blagged this.
11:38Fair play, mate. I look forward to the next challenge.
11:46Look, okay.
11:47No, no, no, no, mate. It's got to go and all.
11:49Make sure you swallow that bit.
11:51And we bite.
11:53More than we have today.
11:54We have no bites today.
11:59Coming up, the action comes thick and fast at the main event.
12:04Yes.
12:05Bobby, are you here?
12:07We were in central France and had failed dismally on our colourful Koi mission,
12:22where I'd just caught a baby catfish.
12:24A poisson chat.
12:26And Zamora net scooped to some fish, meaning by default I had to enjoy a snail baguette.
12:32I can't believe you blagged this.
12:34We were now moving to another Carpersons complex just up the road to start our main mission,
12:41King Carp, and it was Scorchio.
12:45Come on then, Bob.
12:46The weather is very hot.
12:48Not ideal fishing conditions, but the rewards are there, mate.
12:53This is an amazing place we're going to.
12:54It only takes one fish out.
12:56We don't have to be hauling.
12:58We don't have to catch loads of fish,
12:59because there are fish in here that can be your PB and can be my PB.
13:05So, listen, we're in with a chance.
13:07We only need one.
13:09Big mama.
13:11Or as they say in France, the grand...
13:16Fromage?
13:17That's it.
13:18Your French is getting good.
13:22And we'd arrived.
13:25Come, mate.
13:27Look at the amount of lakes.
13:33This is mental.
13:34Le Prunay, a 45-acre water.
13:40The lake of two halves with a thin island strip running right through the middle.
13:44It has average depths of 16 to 22 feet and is fed by 10 natural springs with a high water quality
13:51and natural food sources such as blood worms, mussels and crayfish.
13:57This venue holds catfish, sturgeon and our target species, carp.
14:02Ranging from pristine new stockies to many old originals,
14:06some real stunners that go up to an eye-watering 80 pounds.
14:15History says this side is a little bit more favourable.
14:18I do feel a little bit sorry for you after yesterday, mate,
14:23and eating those snails, so I'm going to offer you first pick in the swims.
14:29I will, as I'm left-footed.
14:30You're two-footed.
14:31I'm going to go on the left-hand side.
14:34Potentially, though, I would like to invite you to have one rod,
14:38if you decide at any point in the session, on this side,
14:41and I'd like you to extend that offer to me.
14:43Then we're spread betting.
14:44Let's just get our rods out, enjoy it, see how we feel.
14:47Let me catch a few first, and then I'll let you slip in.
14:50All right?
14:51Oh, there's a bit of romance about it.
14:53You must be the French hair, Bob.
14:54We love it when you're happy.
14:56Let's get them out.
14:59I've given me partner the best side, obviously,
15:01because that's the sort of guy I am.
15:03But listen, I've got a lot of water in front of me,
15:05and the fish have got cells.
15:07They could be in front of me at any time.
15:09It's that to me.
15:10Present my bait well.
15:11Make sure my rigs are right.
15:13I'm in with a chance.
15:15This lake was weedy in places,
15:17so we first got to work trying to find clear spots in open water
15:20for us to present our rigs,
15:22using a combination of marker floats,
15:24bare leads, but also the sonar on the bait boat.
15:32After finding some spots, it was on to the business end,
15:35the rigs.
15:36Bob opted to fish his trusty D rigs on two rods with cell boilies,
15:40topped with fake corn.
15:41His third was a spinner rig with a diamond white pop-up.
15:44I went for three wafter rigs with lock hooks,
15:47each with tiger nuts, sweet pineapple and bumbleberry hook baits,
15:51alongside a dissolvable PVA bag packed with crushed boilies and pellets.
15:56Lead system-wise, it was a lead clip coupled with a self-triggering
15:59hooking device for optimum tactics.
16:02For free bait, we both went for a mix of whole and crushed
16:05cell and isosweet boilies, pellets, sweet corn and hemp.
16:10This was loaded with the rigs into the bait boats,
16:12which we both used to get it all out with pinpoint accuracy,
16:16onto clear spots we'd already found.
16:31It wasn't too long before all of our six rods were on the dance floor and ready to boogie.
16:36The question was, would the carp be up for the party?
16:39We went into the first evening on the lake with feelings of slight trepidation,
16:43as the lake hadn't been fishing that well before we arrived.
16:47After a while, I started to get a few single bleeps, which we call liners,
16:51normally caused by fish brushing against a line under water.
16:54But was it carp?
17:04Been getting a whole lot of liners.
17:06Really could do with your partner, yeah?
17:08With Bob totally sound, though, I had to rope in the director for netting duties.
17:14Never mind Bobby Zamora.
17:15Here, steps up, Nick Warner.
17:21That's definitely been eating my face.
17:23A surprise species, too.
17:26Here we go.
17:27A sturgeon.
17:28Go on, Nick.
17:29Have you done this before in you, mate?
17:33Consol it.
17:34Consol it.
17:35Great skills from the director in the absence of a sleeping Zamora.
17:40Cheers, Bob.
17:40I mean, Nick.
17:43There you go.
17:45A sturgeon.
17:46First fish.
17:48They were giving me murders.
17:49They were even keeping you up.
17:51They were.
17:53Not Bob, though.
17:54Nah.
17:55Nothing keeps Bob up.
17:56Past 8.30.
17:59Well, apart from a bite on his own rod, that is.
18:03What have we got?
18:05The wheat.
18:06Oh, it's a...
18:07Right, Nick Holman.
18:09You sleep through my sturgeon on purpose.
18:12No, no.
18:13Well, that's sturgeon.
18:14Yeah.
18:15I had to get someone else to come and help net it.
18:18Oh, well, congratulations, big sturgeon.
18:20What was it?
18:21Well, it was the biggest one we've ever caught on the show so far.
18:26It was the moment I wanted to share with you.
18:28Oh.
18:29Hey, you could have called me.
18:31You could have called me and I would have just said,
18:33we'll lay it yourself inside.
18:35Well, how big are you then?
18:37Come on, little carp.
18:38What are you going to be?
18:39Talk to us.
18:40You're in the net.
18:41Dazzle's in the net.
18:42Yay.
18:45First carp of the trip for Captain Kip.
18:48I've got what we come for.
18:50I've also found out me little wingman has had a sturgeon.
18:54Didn't even wake me.
18:55What a lovely guy.
18:56I'm not the big guy I thought, but I made 30 and I'm off the mark.
19:03Thank you very much.
19:07Go on, off you go.
19:09Well done.
19:09Now off for more Zed's ammo.
19:11You'll need it, mate.
19:18Oh, weary team.
19:21A lot of bleeps, a little bit of action.
19:24So, on a positive note, I think that was a relatively good start.
19:28We've just got to get into the zone, understand the lake, new venue.
19:34And I think if we keep chipping away, even with the conditions, we might have a few.
19:41I like that.
19:48Well, waking up this morning, certainly had my nerves settled last night.
19:53With a mid-30, so close to our target of 40 pounds.
19:58I'm happy.
19:58I'm in a good place.
20:00First one just relieves that pressure.
20:02I'm looking forward to today.
20:03It's not due to be as hot as it was yesterday.
20:06Certainly a bit of cloud cover today.
20:09So, hopefully, a couple of carp in the day.
20:12That'll be beautiful.
20:14And I had a little plan to get a daytime bite.
20:17It involved tiger nuts, worms and my left-hand margin.
20:23Well, I was going to let Bobby have a rod in here,
20:25but, you know, as I'm wasting it all by myself in here,
20:27I might as well put another rod out.
20:29So, fourth rod going out.
20:31There's the bait.
20:32A little switch up.
20:33I've chopped some worms in there.
20:34It's a bit of hemp.
20:35Different sized boilies.
20:37Hopefully, that could just lure a carp in these sort of quite humid conditions.
20:42And then the hook bait, interestingly,
20:45is two tiger nuts.
20:47There's a blackened one and one soaked in a bit of flavour with the skin taken off.
20:51That helps them soak up flavour even more.
20:53And the reason I've put them out is there are crayfish in here.
20:56And because I'm going to put this along the margin, the tree line,
21:00crayfish are more likely to be there nesting away and more likely that hook bait will come
21:06under scrutiny from their claws.
21:09So, all I've got to do now is put a bit of dissolving foam on.
21:12This will ensure that the hook bait, if there are twigs and stuff underwater,
21:16it doesn't necessarily land in them.
21:18It will float up.
21:19And then, once that melts, that will drop my balanced tiger nuts,
21:23which have a little bit of cork inside, onto that bait.
21:28That is us.
21:29Another chance, another opportunity,
21:32another lottery ticket in the world of carp fishing in France.
21:36And I wasted no time in getting the rig dropped up my left-hand margin in about nine feet of water.
21:57In less than an hour, my margin rod was away, our first daytime bite.
22:01In less than an hour, my margin rod was away.
22:04Yes.
22:06Bobby, are you here?
22:11Come on.
22:12Come on.
22:14Isn't that my rod?
22:16That's your rod, basically.
22:17So?
22:18So really, yeah, it's yours.
22:19I'll just put it out and I'm going to play it.
22:23Coming up, I also hook a prehistoric monster.
22:27Mate, it was big.
22:28I'm actually scared about it.
22:30It's longer than this.
22:31What?
22:40Our second mission in France to catch a 40-pound-plus carp had started well,
22:44with a mid-30 for Zamo.
22:46I'd caught a rogue sturgeon with the assistance of the director.
22:50And now I was away on my margin rod, which I put out in the hope of getting daytime bites,
22:55was this my first carp.
22:57Looks quite fat, this, Bob.
22:59Yeah, good.
22:59I'm going quite dumpy.
23:01Just when I pulled it back there, it felt like it's a fat carp.
23:05Well, we know the number we need to get to.
23:09Naughty 40, come on.
23:11Whatever the size, it was definitely leading me a merry dance.
23:15Keep that tension, pal.
23:18But now it was in pretty close.
23:20Oh, it's juicy, that, Bob.
23:22Yeah, that's...
23:23Two-tone.
23:24That's decent.
23:26That's what we come for, mate.
23:28If you pull over, I'm going straight up.
23:30Okay.
23:30I think we've got...
23:32We're going to get off the mark.
23:33We're going to get off the mark.
23:34Yes.
23:35Yes.
23:36Yes.
23:37That looks like a 40.
23:38That's bigger than 40.
23:39Yeah, it's wide as well.
23:40That's wide, man.
23:41Wide.
23:42Get in there.
23:44Get in there.
23:46Get on, Zamo's fourth rod.
23:48Come on.
23:48That's yours, really.
23:50I've done so well.
23:54Coming in, Ali.
23:54Can we do it?
23:55Would it make a 40 pound mission weight?
23:58Oh, Bobby.
23:59That's 40 for sure.
24:00Definitely 40.
24:02Bob, I'm going to call it 45.8.
24:06Target achieved.
24:07Well done, sir.
24:08Well done to us both.
24:09It's your rod, mate.
24:10It's your rod anyway.
24:14Look at that.
24:15That is a proper chunky, chunky French mirror carp.
24:20Just what we came for.
24:22You want a piece of this action, Bob?
24:25Not right now.
24:29First carp for me and mission accomplished.
24:32What a belter too.
24:34Now for Zamora to catch a 40 pound plus carp as well.
24:37Then hopefully both push onto a 50 pounder.
24:43The margin rod went back out as the afternoon passed.
24:47Clouds and low pressure started to roll in.
24:49Great conditions for more daytime action.
24:52Then a huge fish jumped over my open water spots and it looked like a massive sturgeon.
25:04Then 90 seconds later.
25:07That's a bite.
25:07There were supposedly just 10 sturgeon in this lake and I was certain I'd just hooked my second of the trip.
25:14Old sturgeon.
25:16Zamora was actually on it for a change and already getting into his waders ready to help land it.
25:21If we got the chance.
25:23Here it comes.
25:24Can you talk me through how am I supposed to land this?
25:26I lead it in head first then you slide the sling.
25:30Yeah.
25:31Yeah.
25:32You probably want to come.
25:33Well I'm going to.
25:34Yeah yeah like that.
25:35That's it.
25:35That's nice.
25:36Back of the net.
25:36Yeah.
25:37Yeah.
25:38Silver.
25:39Is it silver?
25:39Silver bruv.
25:41Mate it was big.
25:43I'm actually scared about it.
25:44It's longer than this.
25:46Whoa.
25:46Mate it's a lot longer than this.
25:48Here it comes.
25:49A super-sized sturgeon.
25:53Oh Bob.
25:53Look at that thing.
25:54A bit more, a bit more.
25:59Get over there lads.
26:00It's easier for you.
26:01Come on.
26:02Come on.
26:02Side, side, side, side, side, side.
26:05Oh my god.
26:05That is slick.
26:07Yeah.
26:09Look at the length of it.
26:10That is taller than you.
26:11Mate.
26:12Look at the size of the thing.
26:16That, I told you it's taller.
26:18Bob that's taller than me isn't it?
26:19Mate that is mental.
26:21Seeing a sturgeon of that size was incredible.
26:26Really didn't think it was going to happen.
26:28Not in this place for sure.
26:30Wasn't even in my mind.
26:32But to see one up close, that big, absolutely amazing.
26:36And I've got a little evening workout.
26:41I've got him.
26:42Worry.
26:43Look at...
26:44What do you reckon?
26:44I've got him.
26:45That is over 80 pounds, isn't it?
26:46Mate, for sure.
26:47It is.
26:48Look at that.
26:51Look down that lens and go.
26:56What a beast, eh?
26:57Absolute beast.
26:58What a creature.
27:00I've never ever targeted sturgeon.
27:03And look, wow, they come along obviously munching the carp bait if you like.
27:08They clearly like grub.
27:11Oh come on.
27:11You can't do it.
27:13Squat.
27:14Straight back.
27:15There you go.
27:17Bye bye.
27:18Not what we were after, but what an amazing creature.
27:24Sturgeon as a species are over 200 million years old and can live to over 100.
27:29And what a privilege to catch one of this size.
27:34Zamora now wanted in on some more action.
27:37So my pal's had a fourth little rod out and I'm going to do the same.
27:43He's had a bite off one and I'm desperate for another.
27:46I'm going for carp though, so I'm going to pop this in the boat and get it on a nice clear spot
27:52just in the margin over there.
27:54I was only away again, this time on the margin rod.
28:08Well I'm glad I never let Bobby get a rod from this spot now.
28:15Only one of the smaller stockies but the daytime margin tactic was working.
28:19While he's been busy catching off his margin rod, I've got mine out now.
28:26Eight foot of water, a bit of bait around it.
28:28Let's hope it produces a nice carp for me.
28:32As another day drew to a close, would there be margin browsers at night too?
28:37Conditions look good for him.
28:49Well, it's the fourth rod has shot off.
28:54I don't think it's a very big fish, but it is a fish.
28:59Oh, what is it? What is it? What is this one?
29:03Is it a koi? Look at this lag. It is a koi.
29:08We got ourselves a koi after all that, eh?
29:12Lovely. How ironic is that?
29:14It is a koi. It is a koi. Look at that.
29:22We go all those places, koi lakes. Don't catch any koi. We come here, we catch koi.
29:28Bash!
29:28Well, that's come up trumps. Fourth rod and nabs a koi.
29:36Fantastic. And not too late in the night either.
29:39And even gone to sleep.
29:40Get some kit, Bob, because that's a ghost carp, not a koi.
29:48No more fish overnight, but just after first light.
29:52That's a carp.
29:53There you go. A little scaly rascal.
30:00I managed my third car for the trip. Perfection in miniature.
30:08The temperature rose as did the air pressure, but so did our work crate.
30:12New rigs were tied and prepped. Freshly baited rigs were loaded into the bait boat and then
30:18redeployed to all our open water and margin spots.
30:28The open water spots were also topped up with free bait using a bait rocket to create
30:32feeding zones for the car.
30:34All traps were set. The open water areas for more night action and the margins where we hope
30:52to nick a carp or two in daylight hours.
30:55I think what's interesting about this particular lake and these swims that we're in is that
31:01with this heat and the amount of foliage around the bank side,
31:04those fish will radiate to that tree line for oxygen.
31:08And that's a wonderful thing because it gives you options in the daytime.
31:12And of course you might catch them there at night as well,
31:14but mainly in the day those fish will go under that cover,
31:18enjoy the oxygen, enjoy the shade, and then hopefully at night they come out.
31:22And that is relatively like it's played out so far.
31:31While the carp chilled out with the temperatures now at its hottest,
31:34we were both pretty spent too so decided to kick back as we awaited the next bite.
31:41Hello mate. That's two of us in here boy.
31:44That's it.
31:46What are you? Rodent.
31:49I can do that.
31:55Wait Dazzler, why don't you join me and my furry friend?
31:58No? You don't fancy it?
32:00Would our hard day's graph come to fruition when the light faded and the temperature dropped?
32:06Only time would tell.
32:14Bob's asleep again, isn't he?
32:16That is a big fish.
32:20Might have to wake me partner up.
32:24Go.
32:25It's got a bit of girth, got a bit of length.
32:31That looks much bigger than the 40 pounder I caught.
32:38I think we might have just cracked 50.
32:40Get in there!
32:42It's been a grueler of a day.
32:44We've grafted hard through it and it feels like a big reward is now languishing in my landing there.
32:52I think it is over 50 pounds.
32:55Thanks for waking me up sir.
32:57But no doubt it is worth it.
33:00Any time I have some sort of extraordinary capture you are nowhere to be seen.
33:06Until you get a little tickle.
33:07Come on Bob.
33:08Right scales are zeroed, slings all ready.
33:12Come on you do your bit.
33:13It's the most important part of all.
33:15This Bobby, I'm pretty certain, is the biggest fish of the trip by a mile.
33:20Fifty four.
33:23Fifty four and some wriggling.
33:27Well.
33:27That is a belter.
33:31I can't believe we've done that deep.
33:32Look at that.
33:34Oh my god.
33:36Fifty four pounds and four ounces.
33:39I believe Bob that took me by surprise.
33:43Mate, well worth getting me out of bed.
33:45I must say I have got fish envy.
33:47Yes, yes.
33:52A 50 pounder always feels great.
33:56Another lake you've been to, a 50 pounder ticked.
34:00It's just, there's a bed post that I open and I just knock on them.
34:0550 pounder bed post.
34:08What an absolute belter.
34:10One of the old originals and a big achievement.
34:13I was proper made up.
34:15Oh, that's wise.
34:17Wicked fish.
34:19We're still time to go.
34:23Coming up, I'm out for the count as Zamo goes solo.
34:26Could have done with having me pal there.
34:28See what we land there, but he's having his beauty sleep.
34:40We were in France and it was hot.
34:42Our plan to fish open water and the margins to catch carp in the day and night was working.
34:48I'd just smashed our 40 pounder mission for a second time having just landed a stunning 54 pounder.
34:55That took me by surprise.
34:58And knackered Zamora was still yet to break his 40 pound target, but could this be it?
35:03I don't think we're going to get much sleep tonight, I'll be honest with you.
35:11A little catfish.
35:13I really, really don't like catfish.
35:21Look at that slime.
35:23That's why I don't like them.
35:25And I'm sending you straight back right away.
35:28Go away.
35:29And the action carried on.
35:33Mate, you didn't even let me get back to bed.
35:35Oh, I'm nicely done.
35:39Nicely done.
35:40A scaly mid-double for my open water spot.
35:46Hopefully, this one's over 40 pounds.
35:49Could have done with having my pal there to help me land that, but he's having his beauty sleep.
36:0940 pounds.
36:1212 ounces.
36:1240 pounder.
36:17Thick.
36:19Target achieved.
36:21Although my little man over there, he won't know.
36:24Fast asleep.
36:26But I know I've done it.
36:29I'm there with you in spirit, Dazzler.
36:31Well done, bro.
36:32Our penultimate day and it was absolutely roastio by 7am, but I was feeling strangely fresh and ready to rock.
36:51That was eventful.
36:53Sorry I missed your 40 pounder.
36:54Well done.
36:56I'm glad to see you're alive and awake, so I was a little bit worried, a little bit concerned about you.
37:00One thing is for certain, Bobby, it is extremely hot.
37:04And I've got a question for you, right?
37:06We are grafting all through the day, all through the night.
37:10How does that compare to high level football sport?
37:16Very different to the football.
37:18You know, it's 90 minutes, bang, get it done and chill.
37:21Or it's this absolute grind.
37:22Do you think then that carp anglers all around the world could or should refer to themselves as athletes?
37:31Endurance athletes.
37:33Mo Farah's go all day and night.
37:36I've always felt, I have always felt.
37:39You're an Olympic athlete.
37:40I will toast to that with a little fist bump.
37:44Right, let's go and sort the rods out.
37:47Oh, you're there. Get us an ice cream.
37:48Will do, mate. But after I've done my morning workout routine.
37:53Bobby referred to fishing as a, I suppose, similar to being a marathon runner.
37:58Iranians are famed for their wrestling.
38:02Now, I don't want to run any marathons, but I wouldn't mind a good old wrestle with a massive calf.
38:06I've got that in me any time of the day.
38:09Yes. Well done, Dazzler. Lovely netting, sir.
38:12I'm an Iranian wrestler, not a very good Iranian boxer.
38:25And Zamora makes a good sprinter.
38:28What a savage take from an athletic stocky.
38:33So small, Bob. I don't think I can catch him in there.
38:38Daytime bites. Daytime bites.
38:40We like daytime bites.
38:44God, Bobby's even faster out the blocks than you.
38:50During a break in the all-action carp Olympics, it was important to keep focused.
38:55So I had a high-calorie competition lined up.
39:01Athletes, important to get your calories in throughout the day.
39:06Yeah. Nutrition, big part of your career.
39:08Yeah, of course. It's all fuel. It's all fuel.
39:10I've got the perfect fuel.
39:12We've got to pack as many of these down as we can.
39:15Okay.
39:16Yeah? You up for it?
39:17Yeah. As long as it's not escargot.
39:19It ain't chicken breasts.
39:20Yes. I've got the perfect summertime icebreaker.
39:28What is the challenge? So as many as we can?
39:30Eat literally as many as you can.
39:32Ten minutes to eat as many ice creams as humanly possible. Easy. I've got this one in the bag.
39:39Right. Set the timer, Bob. Set the timer. What have we got in us?
39:43I do know that I've actually got dairy intolerance. So I'm going to have a stomachache later.
39:51Might have to borrow a bucket.
39:53Yeah.
40:02It's getting hard already.
40:06Who did I do with this?
40:08Quite disappointing with my performance, Bob.
40:10I'm not relishing in this like I thought I would.
40:12But if I'd enjoy them more, I'd be out of power and food.
40:15This one was hard work. It was a bad decision.
40:17It's like putting on the wrong bite.
40:27Good decision. Great decision, that one.
40:30That's going to take me to number four easy.
40:33How many more have you got in here?
40:34One more than you.
40:36That's such a good action.
40:40Oh, my God, wow.
40:44You have to chunk that down.
40:46Right.
40:50How long are you?
40:55Five minutes remaining from now, Bob.
40:58It's starting to get delirious.
41:01Three and a half minutes to go, Bob.
41:05Stupid, stupid challenge.
41:08One minute left.
41:16One minute left.
41:18Five, four, three, two, one.
41:29You've won by an inch.
41:34You started seven.
41:37I'll give you that, Bob.
41:38Disgusting.
41:39I'm not the man I thought I was.
41:41I feel like I've been both physically and mentally beaten
41:45in that particular escapade in that particular escapade.
41:48I actually enjoyed eating escargot more, I think.
41:51I won the challenge.
41:53There's no prize.
41:54Hopefully, the carp gods will say,
41:55listen, you've done very, very well.
41:58I'll give you a massive big carp to celebrate.
42:02Do you want ice cream?
42:08Do you want ice cream?
42:10Yes.
42:12I'll give you a big idea.
42:13We both hoped we had time to digest before any more action.
42:24Oh, oh, oh, oh.
42:25But the carp gods were having none of it, was this Zammo's big reward.
42:30Wild spring for netting duties.
42:32Go on, Dazzler.
42:33Oh, it's a nice looking fish.
42:35But...
42:36Oh, it's a good fish, it's all right.
42:38Go on, Bob.
42:40Hey!
42:43The margin rod has done a little bigger.
42:48Almost 40 pounds.
42:50Off the margin.
42:51Weeeey!
42:52It's getting bigger.
42:56Thanks.
42:57Ta-da.
42:58Oh, butterfingers.
43:00As the sun started to set on our final evening,
43:03Zambo got his margin rod back out on the spot
43:05for maybe the last time.
43:07On reflection, this lake had been kinder to us
43:10than we'd originally thought it would be.
43:14We've done all right.
43:15I'm happy with what we've caught,
43:17but have we got one last big moment in us
43:21with a little, tiny smidgen bit of time left?
43:25The endurance carp marathon was entering its final stage.
43:28Buckle up, Bob, for hopefully more night action.
43:31That could be a decent carp, that.
43:38A golden deceiver, but still about 35 pounds.
43:42Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.
43:44A mint fish stove by any standard.
43:51And we are in.
43:52I think it's a carp.
43:53Yep, that's definitely a carp, Bob.
43:55He must be tired.
44:00Looks about 30 pounds.
44:01Nice one.
44:02Now off back to bed.
44:10Only hours now remain before we reach the finishing line.
44:14Did we have one more big carp in us?
44:19Yeah, it's a bite.
44:23That was a positive bite.
44:27Feels heavy.
44:32It's a big one, mate.
44:34I can feel it.
44:37Oh, see colour?
44:38Oh, yeah, I see a fair bit of colour.
44:40It's a common and all.
44:42Oh, it's big, mate.
44:43Oh, it's a big one.
44:44I'm getting in for that, Bob.
44:45Throw the net forward, mate.
44:46That's a cheese-o-rama.
44:49Here's that net.
44:50That looks big.
44:52Come on, get in that net.
44:56Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
44:58Oh!
44:59Oh!
45:01That is a good leaving present.
45:03A big golden common.
45:05That's what we wanted.
45:07Well done, mate.
45:08Brilliant.
45:09It wasn't a giant, but still a big old French carp.
45:14Oh!
45:1740, 44, 10.
45:23Oh, that's a nice one to go home with, mate.
45:25What a bar of gold.
45:27What an end to an amazing trip.
45:29Thank you, partner.
45:30It's been a pleasure, as always.
45:33Robert, that is what I believe they call a Bobby Dazzler.
45:38There you go.
45:39A picture postcard to say goodbye with.
45:42In these conditions, in this heat, we both had a target of £40.
45:47We both succeeded.
45:48Ali's gone on to the 50s and a huge bar of gold at the end.
45:52What a week.
45:53There's a real mixed bag of wonderful carp in here.
45:56Those scaly stockies, which we got to enjoy,
45:59but the ones we really wanted were those wily old originals.
46:02So, to cap it off, to finish the session off with one of those,
46:07C'est bon.
46:09We will find you acting on your best behaviour.
46:16Turn your back on Mother Nature.
46:20Yeah, Zoe.
46:21Everybody wants to rule the world.
