00:00Thank you so much for watching.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:33And the big question, the question of the day is,
00:35are we losing the ability to mend and fix things ourselves?
00:40In the old days, of course, you know,
00:41who couldn't change a fuse or change the car wheel or the rest of it?
00:46But I'm quite handy, and certainly I can change the car wheel,
00:50although I might tell you I once had a very serious problem.
00:54And we had a puncture, and I changed the wheel, it was the back wheel.
00:57I suddenly thought, the steering's all gone very light.
01:01I wonder why the steering's so light.
01:03And I looked in the rearview mirror.
01:05Anyway, with that, something went shooting past the car on the inside
01:09and up the motorway bank and demolished the fence.
01:13It was the rear wheel. I haven't put it on properly.
01:16Anyway, always tighten up your nuts. Very important.
01:21Very, very important.
01:22Thank you, sir. Nick.
01:23How are you about things about the house?
01:25Well, I would never try and do anything like that,
01:27but I have been known to do a bit of plumbing,
01:29and I've got the scars to prove it.
01:31Yeah, if anyone's got the waste disposal,
01:33knows that they clog up every five minutes.
01:35But we had a Christmas party last year,
01:37and two hours before everybody arrived,
01:40my kitchen helper, who shall remain nameless,
01:42forgot and piled everything down,
01:45and two hours before everyone arrived,
01:47it was completely clogged and there was water coming up.
01:49Oh, that's terrible.
01:51Terrible.
01:51How awful. I hope you gave them a smack.
01:53Of course not.
01:55Of course not.
01:56You're too gentle with him, I'll tell you that much.
01:58Who's here?
01:59Glenn Jones is back, Rachel,
02:01managing director from Loughton,
02:02who had a, well, he survived a late challenge
02:05and picked up your first win.
02:07You did well.
02:08Yes, he did a tight one, but I really enjoyed it.
02:10You're joined by Cathy Smith,
02:12church centre manager from the Wakefield Baptist Church.
02:16How's that?
02:17Is that right?
02:17Yes.
02:18Well done.
02:19And on your wedding day,
02:20apparently you listened attentively to your matron of honour.
02:24I did.
02:25What had she to tell you?
02:26Well, I was very nervous and very emotional,
02:28and my matron of honour said,
02:30deep breaths, Cathy.
02:31Yeah.
02:31So I went down the aisle.
02:33By the time I got to the front,
02:35my husband thought he was marrying a horse.
02:38And he likes horses.
02:39It was a bit breathy.
02:41Probably hyperventilating.
02:42Hyperventilating, yes.
02:43Terrible.
02:44Well, Cathy, good luck to you.
02:46You'll have a lot of fun here today.
02:48If we hear you heavy breathing,
02:50we'll slow things down for you.
02:52Let's have a big round of applause for Glenn and Cathy.
02:59And Susie's over there,
03:00having had a very restful weekend, I trust.

08:0875 over 25 is 3.
08:11Times them together for 450.

14:16You handy?
14:16No.
14:17Ever?
14:17I'm the world's worst.
14:22But what the good news is, my wife realised years ago not to ask me to do anything.
14:28I'll tell you what it was.
14:29My son was being born and my wife said, let's paint the small one and turn it into a nursery.
14:40She said, you can paint that.
14:43I said, oh, I don't know if I can.
14:45I thought, I'm not going to make a mistake or a blunder.
14:48And I got this plastic sheeting to put over everything, over the bed, over the carpet.
14:56There was a wardrobe up one side with louvers, which was all the go back then, with my wife's favourite bits in it.
15:04So, I thought, I'll do the ceiling first.
15:08I thought, now it's going to drop on me.
15:10So, I went in, I had my socks on and my underpants.
15:15And I found a straw hat belonging to my wife, with cherries in the side, and I put that on.
15:24I've got the paint, the big can of paint.
15:28As I went in, I slipped on the covering, fell backwards, shot the paint into the louvered wardrobe,
15:41which contained all my wife's favourite bits and pieces.
15:47And I was just laying there screaming.
15:50And, of course, my wife ran up the stairs.
15:53She started screaming.
15:54But the good news is, since that day, I have never done anything in the house at all.
16:02Thank you for the picture of the bedroom, the spare bedroom.
16:06You've painted a beautiful picture, which I shall carry with me, to the grave.

20:55Minus 25, minus 9.
20:58Yep, one the other way.
20:59There we are.
21:00They've straddled it again.
21:02How can we get in the middle, I wonder?
21:036, 6, 7.
21:05Leave it with me, Nick.
21:06I'll leave that with you, Rachel.
21:08Now, 55 plays 31 in Glenn's favour
21:11as we turn to our second tea time teaser,
21:13which is often dour.
21:15And the clue, it was less than 12 inches in length,
21:18yet it was still on the ground.
21:20It was less than 12 inches in length,
21:22yet it was still on the ground.
21:24Welcome back. I left you with a clue.
21:41It was less than 12 inches in length, yet it was still on the ground.
21:45And the answer for that one is...
21:47It was underfoot.
21:49Underfoot.
21:50Now, 55 for Glenn.

22:57A risky eight.
22:59And?
23:00Planned.
23:01I've got to have a safe six.
23:03And what would that safe six be?
23:05Glaze.
23:06How risky is this, Cathy?
23:08Palliers.
23:09P-A-L-L-I-E-R-S.
23:12Happy, Susie?
23:13I'm not, I'm afraid.
23:14No, pallier, not there is a noun.
23:16It could be palliers and somebody else is in friendlier.
23:19So palliers isn't in, and you can't spell glazed that way either, I'm afraid.
23:23It's G-L-A-Z-E.
23:24So I have to disallow.
23:25Mmm.
23:26Both of them, sorry.
23:27So what can we have?
23:29Oh.
23:30Well, we can have spillage, which is what you were up there.
23:32Right, I had when I was painting the ceiling.
23:34But I'm going to leave this to you, Susie.
23:36Erm, er, well there is a nine there.
23:39Erm, people you wouldn't want to encounter.

25:05Um, I'll risk a six.
25:07Glenn?
25:07Undies?
25:09Undies, yes, Kathy.
25:11D-E-S-E-N-T.
25:13Descent with an S.
25:15Um, no.
25:17It's not there.
25:18I'm sorry.
25:19No descent that way.
25:21That's a C.
25:21It's worth a try.
25:22Yeah.
25:23And, Len?
25:24Len and Susie?
25:25We've got destiny.
25:26We have destiny.
25:28And you can say that one, because it's naughty.
25:30Uh, let's go with the undies.
25:32We have nudity.
25:33Yeah, nudity.
25:35Without undies.
25:36That's the whole point, I think, isn't it?
25:38It's sans culotte, as we say.
25:4061, place 31.
25:42Susie, it's time for your wonderful Origins of Words.
25:45And today, what will you teach us?
25:48Today, to thank Steve Clark, who emailed us in,
25:51and asked if we could explain why we say ta for thank you,
25:57why we say ta-ta, or ta-ra, for goodbye,
26:00and why, when we get to the bottom of a problem,
26:03we say ta-ra.
26:04So he says, how did ta become used in three separate meanings?
26:08And the basic answer, which will encompass all three of them,
26:11really, is it's all about sound,
26:13and you might have guessed that.
26:15I'll start with ta, meaning thank you.
26:19That simply arose in the 1800s as child speak for thank you,
26:23and then it was accepted into mainstream colloquial English.
26:27Ta-ta, as in goodbye, started off in exactly the same way,
26:32as an infant's version, really, of goodbye.
26:34Similarly, ta-ra, and also ta-ti-bye.
26:37So, yes, it's really all about child speak.
26:40A little bit different is ta-ra.
26:41That is onomatopoeic, again,
26:44but it's imitative of the sound of a flourish
26:46or a musical fanfare, if you like.
26:48One short note, one long note,
26:50that will accompany an entrance or a trick, et cetera,
26:53and it's probably imitating a classic horn or a trumpet.
26:56So, as I say, all about sound.
26:58But I thought I would stick with goodbyes
27:01and remind me a few other words that mean goodbye
27:03and where they came from.
27:05Toodle-pip was simply built on the toot-toot and pip-pip sound
27:09of a car horn as it was leaving.
27:11Perhaps my favourite is so long, like so long,
27:14and that goes back to the German adieu zur Lange,
27:17and that really commended somebody to God.
27:19So, adieu to God when you say goodbye.
27:22And zur Lange, for the length of time
27:24that you were apart from me, so long.
27:26Which I really like, I think it's quite romantic.
27:28That's lovely.
27:3461 to 31.
27:36Glenn on 61.
27:37It's Cathy's letters game.
